  • Colin Chapman: Inside the Innovator

Evro Publishing Colin Chapman: Inside the Innovator

Book SynopsisRenowned as one of the greatest creative forces in the world of the automobile, Lotus's Colin Chapman (1928-82) left a mixed legacy. Was he an unparalleled innovator or an uninhibited exploiter of the uncredited ideas of others? In this landmark book, celebrated author Karl Ludvigsen gets to grips with the legend, digging deep beneath the skin of Chapman and his cars to explore and expose the motivations that drove this mercurial and controversial genius. Interviews with key figures in the Chapman story mesh with information from the author's extensive archives to make this book a unique and compelling encounter between the engineer-innovator and the historian-investigator. Originally published in 2010, the book has become a standard text, not only on the man but also on the evolution and design of racing cars. Thus it is being reissued to meet continuing popular demand.

    5 in stock

Book SynopsisCharles Ulm and Charles Kingsford Smith were the original pioneers of Australian aviation. Together they succeeded in a number of record-breaking flights that made them instant celebrities in Australia and around the world: the first east-to-west crossing of the Pacific, the first trans-Tasman flight, Australia to New Zealand, the first flight from New Zealand to Australia. Business ventures followed for them, as they set up Australian National Airways in late 1928. Smithy was the face of the airline, happier in the cockpit or in front of an audience than in the boardroom. Ulm on the other hand was in his element as managing director. Ulm had the tenacity and organisational skills, yet Smithy had the charisma and the public acclaim. In 1932, Kingsford Smith received a knighthood for his services to flying, Ulm did not.Business setbacks and dramas followed, as Ulm tried to develop the embryonic Australian airline industry. ANA fought hard against the young Qantas, already an establishment favourite, but a catastrophic crash on the airline's regular route from Sydney to Melbourne and the increasing bite of the Great Depression forced ANA's bankruptcy in 1933. Desperate to drum up publicity for a new airline venture, Ulm's final flight was meant to demonstrate the potential for a regular trans-Pacific passenger service. Somewhere between San Francisco and Hawaii his plane, Stella Australis, disappeared. No trace of the plane or crew were ever found. In the years since his death, attention has focused more and more on Smithy, leaving Ulm neglected and overshadowed. This biography will attempt to rectify that, showing that Ulm was at least Smithy's equal as a flyer, and in many ways his superior as a visionary, as an organiser and as a businessman. His untimely death robbed Australia of a huge talent.

Book SynopsisProfessor Brian Cox is among the best-known physicists in the world. As presenter of hit television series Human Universe, Wonders of the Solar System and Wonders of the Universe, his affable charm and infectious enthusiasm have brought science to a whole new audience. Born in Lancashire in 1968, Cox was a bright but not brilliant pupil at school. He flourished at university, however, gaining a first-class honours degree and an MPhil in Physics from Manchester University before being awarded his PhD in particle physics in 1998. Alongside his studies, he played keyboards in the band D:Ream, who topped the charts in 1994 with 'Things Can Only Get Better', which was famously used by the Labour Party for its 1997 election campaign. Although an award-winning celebrity TV presenter, Brian Cox remains devoted to scientific research. He is a Royal Society University Research Fellow, an advanced fellow at the University of Manchester, and also works on the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN in Switzerland. In 2010 he was awarded the OBE for his services to science. Featuring exclusive interviews and in-depth research, this book delves into the fascinating universe of the man who single-handedly made physics cool.

Princeton University Press The Logician and the Engineer

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThird printing. First paperback printing. Original copyright date: 2013.Trade Review"Meshing logic problems with the stories of two extraordinary men ... Paul Nahin fashions a tale of innovation and discovery. Alongside a gripping account of how Shannon built on Boole's work, Nahin explores others key to the technological revolution, from Georg Cantor to Alan Turing."--Nature "Engaging... Nahin assumes some rudimentary knowledge but expertly explains concepts such as relay circuits, Turing machines, and quantum computing. Reasoning through the problems and diagrams will give persistent readers genuine aha moments and an understanding of the two revolutionaries who helped to lay the foundation of our digital world."--Scientific American "Part biography, part history, and part a review of basic information theory, this book does an excellent job of fitting these interlocking elements together."--Library Journal "The reader is taken on a journey from the development of some abstract mathematical ideas through a nearly ubiquitous application of those ideas within the modern world with so many embedded digital computers... I enjoyed the discussion of Claude Shannon. In the history of the computer and development of the internet and World Wide Web, his ideas and contributions are too often overlooked. He is one of my heroes and I believe that everyone that reads this book will come to the same conclusion."--Charles Ashbacher, MAA Reviews "Paul J. Nahin really knows how to tell a good story... The Logician and the Engineer is truly a gem."--New York Journal of Books "A short but fairly detailed exploration of the genesis of Boolean logic and Shannon's information theory... [G]ood background reading for anyone studying electronics or computer science."--Christine Evans-Pughe, Engineering & Technology "Although the book is technical, it is always easily understandable for anyone (for those who need it, some basic rules for electrical circuits are collected in a short appendix). It is not only understandable but also pleasantly bantering and at occasions even facetious."--A. Bultheel, European Mathematical Society "Most valuable to this reviewer, and likely to many potential readers, is the closing chapter, aptly titled Beyond Boole and Shannon. Here is provided an introduction to quantum computing and its logic, possibly portending the future of computers, yet unmistakably bearing the footprints of the two early pioneers. It is an unexpected yet fitting conclusion to this thoroughly enjoyable read."--Ronald E. Prather, Mathematical Reviews Clippings "Nahin has had the very good idea of connecting the very different worlds and times of Boole, Shannon, and others to demonstrate that a little Victorian algebra can turn out to be very useful."--SIAM Review "The exposition is clear and does not assume any prior knowledge except elementary mathematics and a few basic facts from physics. I recommend this well-written book to all readers interested in the history of computer science, as well as those who are curious about the fundamental principles of digital computing."--Antonin Slavik, Zentralblatt MATH "[T]his is a useful and often interesting introduction to the life and work of two intellectual giants who are largely unknown to the general public."--Gareth and Mary Jones, London Mathematical Society Newsletter "The problems are varied and indeed intriguing, and the solutions are delightful."--Mathematics Magazine "This book is not light reading. It would be excellent for advanced high school juniors or seniors with a strong interest in computer science as well as mathematics."--Tom Ottinger, Mathematics Teacher "Nahin leavens the math and engineering with humor and an infectious intellectual curiosity, and the parallels between Boole and Shannon are convincingly drawn... [The Logician and the Engineer] will give your brain a workout, but an enjoyable one."--San Francisco Book ReviewTable of ContentsPreface xi 1 What You Need to Know to Read This Book 1 Notes and References 5 2 Introduction 6 Notes and References 14 3 George Boole and Claude Shannon: Two Mini-Biographies 17 *3.1 The Mathematician 17 *3.2 The Electrical Engineer 28 * Notes and References 39 4 Boolean Algebra 43 *4.1 Boole's Early Interest in Symbolic Analysis 43 *4.2 Visualizing Sets 44 *4.3 Boole's Algebra of Sets 45 *4.4 Propositional Calculus 48 *4.5 Some Examples of Boolean Analysis 52 *4.6 Visualizing Boolean Functions 59 * Notes and References 65 5 Logical Switching Circuits 67 *5.1 Digital Technology: Relays versus Electronics 67 *5.2 Switches and the Logical Connectives 68 *5.3 A Classic Switching Design Problem 71 *5.4 The Electromagnetic Relay and the Logical NOT 73 *5.5 The Ideal Diode and the Relay Logical AND and OR 76 *5.6 The Bi-Stable Relay Latch 81 * Notes and References 84 6 Boole, Shannon, and Probability 88 *6.1 A Common Mathematical Interest 88 *6.2 Some Fundamental Probability Concepts 89 *6.3 Boole and Conditional Probability 96 *6.4 Shannon, Conditional Probability, and Relay Reliability 99 *6.5 Majority Logic 106 * Notes and References 110 7 Some Combinatorial Logic Examples 114 *7.1 Channel Capacity, Shannon's Theorem, and Error-Detection Theory 114 *7.2 The Exclusive-OR Gate (XOR) 122 *7.3 Error-Detection Logic 127 *7.4 Error-Correction Theory 128 *7.5 Error-Correction Logic 132 * Notes and References 137 8 Sequential-State Digital Circuits 139 *8.1 Two Sequential-State Problems 139 *8.2 The NOR Latch 142 *8.3 The Clocked RS Flip-Flop 146 *8.4 More Flip-Flops 154 *8.5 A Synchronous, Sequential-State Digital Machine Design Example 158 * Notes and References 160 9 Turing Machines 161 *9.1 The First Modern Computer 162 *9.2 Two Turing Machines 164 *9.3 Numbers We Can't Compute 168 * Notes and References 173 10 Beyond Boole and Shannon 176 *10.1 Computation and Fundamental Physics 176 *10.2 Energy and Information 178 *10.3 Logically Reversible Gates 180 *10.4 Thermodynamics of Logic 184 *10.5 A Peek into the Twilight Zone: Quantum Computers 188 *10.6 Quantum Logic--and Time Travel, Too! 197 Notes and References 205 Epilogue For the Future: The Anti-Amphibological Machine 210 Appendix Fundamental Electric Circuit Concepts 219 Acknowledgments 223 Index 225

At his death, six years later, his theory of the electromagnetic field was neither well understood nor widely accepted. By the mid-1890s, however, it was regarded as one...Trade ReviewGeorge Francis Fitzgerald's indirect influence was immense, and his reputation grows with every retelling of his period by the historians of science, especially in... The Maxwellians, by Bruce Hunt.... He was the acknowledged leader of an international team—what we would today call an invisible college—calling themselves the Maxwellians—the subject of Hunt's splendid book. -- D. Weaire, Trinity College, Dublin * Europhysics News *The entire story is fascinating and often surprising. It deserves a wide audience. This will be facilitated by the fact that the book is in English, not in mathematics; a few equations appear, but most are in plain prose. * American Scientist *The Maxwellians is a remarkable achievement.... Hunt combines the highest level of professional historical scholarship with a narrative that is lively and compelling throughout. * Nature *This excellent book is the story of three men whose lives were shaped and whose friendship was made through the study of one book, James Clerk Maxwell's Treatise on Electricity and Magnetism. Behind this story is another of how the premature death of one man, Maxwell, caused an intellectual dislocation in science propagating over many years. * Science *Told with historical sensitivity and analytical skill, Hunt's story demolishes many of the long-accepted myths about the history of electromagnetism after Maxwell.... Hunt provides a readable account, written in terms accessible to anyone with a basic knowledge of physics. * Times Higher Education Supplement *

Book SynopsisWilliam H. Foege, one of the most respected leaders in global public health, takes readers on a tour of his time at the CDC. In its seventy years, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has evolved from a malaria control program to an institution dedicated to improving health for all people across the world. The Fears of the Rich, The Needs of the Poor is a revealing account of the CDC's development by its former director, public health luminary William H. Foege. Dr. Foege tells the stories of pivotal moments in public health, including the eradication of smallpox (made possible due in part to Foege's research) and the discovery of Legionnaires' disease, Reye syndrome, toxic shock syndrome, and HIV/AIDS. With good humor and optimism, he recounts the various crises he surmounted, from threats of terrorist attacks to contentious congressional hearings and funding cuts. Highlighting the people who made possible some of public health's biggest successes, Foege outlines thTrade ReviewI would recommend the book to anyone interested in, or who works within, the field of public health. It imagines Forster as a thinker and therefore the relationship of the two main parts of his biography--circumnavigation and revolution--unite for the first time."--Gustav Seibt "S ddeutsche Zeitung " "The two key concepts of the era, 'nature' and 'revolution, ' which were in Forster's thinking and actions, Goldstein reconstructs in an impressive way: in a thrilling, lucid style drawing on Forster's diaries, letters, and works."--Oliver Pfohlmann "Neue Z rcher Zeitung " "The revolution is not a figment, but a natural phenomenon, a 'self-ignition of the reason' for Forster. To have developed this relationship, a 'natural revolution, ' from Forster's natural and human science is Goldstein's no small merit."--Alexander Kosenina "Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung " "Goldstein explores Forster's experience of life and the ambivalent relationship between nature and philosophy. He shows Forster as more than a shipwrecked hero, but rather as an insightful thinker who was as bold as he was stoic."--Benedikt Erenz "ZEIT " "Using extensive quotes, Goldstein thrillingly depicts Forster's great journey, the impressions and ordeals of which are said to have remained with him for life."--Janika Gelinek "Neue Z rcher Zeitung " "An extraordinary life story that is thrilling to read."--Lina Kokaly "Radio Bremen "

Book Synopsis2020 Banff Mountain Book Award Winner - Grand Prize 2020 Banff Mountain Book Award Winner - Mountain Literature Richard K. Nelson was the host of the national public radio series, "Encounters" Nelson was an anthropologist who lived with Alaska Native tribes and spoke both Inupiag and Koyukon Based on Nelson's journals and interviews with Gary Snyder, Barry Lopez, Rick Bass, and others "He listened to his [Native Alaskan] teachers, immersed himself in their landscapes as a naturalist, and became, without intending to, a great teacher himself." --Barry Lopez, from the foreword Before his death in 2019, cultural anthropologist, author, and radio producer Richard K. Nelson's work focused primarily on the indigenous cultures of Alaska and, more generally, on the relationships between people and nature. Nelson lived for extended periods in Athabaskan and Alaskan Eskimo villages, experiences which inspired his earliest written works, including Hunters of the Northern Ice In Raven's Witness, Lentfer tells Nelson's story--from his midwestern childhood to his first experiences with Native culture in Alaska through his own lifelong passion for the land where he so belonged. Nelson was the author of the bestselling The Island Within and Heart and Blood. The recipient of multiple honorary degrees and numerous literary awards, he regularly packed auditoriums when he spoke. His depth of experience allowed him to become an intermediary between worlds. This is his story. Find out more at www.ravenswitness.com, and learn how you can help bring this story to life here.Trade ReviewA beautifully told story of a well-lived life.--Lisa Schwarzburg "Alaska Journal of Anthropology" A lovely tribute that illuminates what makes a life extraordinary.--Jennifer Sahn "High Country News" Raven's Witness not only introduces Richard Nelson to those of us who had not heard of him, but more importantly it lays bare the philosophies that he embraced, that will likely be important for the future of humanity.--Mike Nash "Cloudburst" The author gives compelling shape to his subject's vigor and curiosity.-- "Library Journal" An inherently fascinating and impressively informative biography, 'Raven's Witness: The Alaska Life of Richard K. Nelson' will prove to be of immense interest to readers.-- "Midwest Book Review" Anyone who cares about the wilder corners of this Earth, and the indigenous people and animals that have successfully inhabited them, should know the work of Richard Nelson, a remarkable anthropologist and superb writer who died last year. A fine introduction to his life can be found in a new biography, 'Raven's Witness.'--Bill McKibben "The New Yorker's The Climate Crisis" Mr. Lentfer was a friend and expedition partner to Nelson, and he skillfully portrays the trials of a life stretched taut between these two different ways of knowing and occupying.... Lentfer's book is particularly good at evoking the piercing beauties of all that was outside, and the bliss Nelson found there.--Richard Adams Carey "Wall Street Journal" Raven's Witness is the perfect mix of poetic voice and scientifically infused prose. This book takes us on one man's journey of passion and insight that stems from Alaska's wilderness and its people. The writing style is thoughtful, and the end result is a story that seeps into the soul of the reader.--Helen Rolfe "2020 Banff Book Competition Jury, Mountain Literature Award" This book makes me want to ponder over our connections with nature and the meaning of spirituality for each one of us. Such is the power of its quality of writing and the subject of the book, Richard K. Nelson. There can never be enough of books like this.--Nandini Purandare "2020 Banff Book Competition Jury, Grand Prize Award Winner" Even more than a brilliant biography, Raven's Witness creates an entirely new genre--a beautifully told story of the ethos of gratitude and joy that is born when an extraordinary man immerses himself in the culture of sea-ice people and the wisdom of a wild island.--Kathleen Dean Moore, author of Great Tide Rising Hank Lentfer's Raven's Witness is an exceptional biography of Richard Nelson, and a gift to us. Reading it we come to understand, through Nelson's life, how the immediacy of the senses, flowing across the earth--touch, taste, scent, sight, sound--transcend whatever other feeble boundaries we construct. Nelson emerges here as a most passionate participant in these senses, and in that immediacy, endures.--Rick Bass, author of Winter: Notes from Montana [Lentfer] had a wealth of material to work with, and has done a magnificent job of crafting a well-organized and literary book of his own from that abundance.--Nancy Lord "Anchorage Daily News" A fine biography, and a memorable introduction to an exceptional man.--Jane Manaster "Seattle Book Review" An anthropological saga, a literary gem about the legendary "Nels," one of the most extraordinary naturalists of our time.--Paul Hawken, author of Drawdown In prose that powerfully evokes the richness of the landscape he writes about, Lentfer takes readers on a touching and remarkable journey, managing to create a heartfelt portrait not only of his complex and fascinating subject but also of the people Nelson loved and the place he called home. With its artful presentation of a writer's life and struggles, Raven's Witness takes readers on a profoundly American adventure that soars through last word.--Colleen Mondor "Booklist" Lentfer's refined and evocative writing is enriched by excerpts from Nels's eloquent, revealing journal entries.... Packed with relevant messages, Lentfer's biography is a timely reminder to heed the advice of students who have learned from the greatest teacher of all: nature.--Bianca Bowers "Foreword Reviews"

It embraces the broad scope of Poincare's work, from his philosophical speculations to his popular writing, and gives a thorough overview of his extensive mathematical researches."---Peter Lynch, Irish Mathematical Society Bulletin"[T]he author does not simply give platitudes when writing about Poincare's ideas: mathematicians will enjoy reading about his discoveries concerning the three-body problem, the theory of functions, topology, number theory, Lie theory, algebraic geometry, and probability. This scientific biography is the first to comprehensively cover all of Poincare's main contributions to mathematics, philosophy, and physics."---Alan S. McRae, Mathemematical Reviews Clippings"Jeremy Gray has done a marvelous job of exposition and of binding together the many different cognitive, social and biographical strands into the coherent whole of a challenging, but highly rewarding, 'scientific biography'."---Klaus Hentschel, British Journal for the History of Science"A good intellectual biography of an artist should help the reader see how a particular worldview shapes the pursuit of art. Gray's book does that most admirably."---Daniel S. Alexander, H-France Review"Henry Poincaré is likely to remain the standard by which scientific biographies, at least those that concern physicists and mathematicians, are judged for some time."---Christopher Cumo, Canadian Journal of History"I warmly recommend the book to anyone with an interest in the development of modern mathematics. It will surely be the definitive scientific biography of Poincare for the foreseeable future."---John Stillwell, Notices of the AMS"Gray describes Poincaré's scientific epoch in a beautiful way. Due attention is paid to the mathematical and further scientific aspects of his life, and the intellectual complexity of his achievements, both in their range and their depth, are amply discussed. Gray displays a mastery of his material that is rare even among historians of mathematics and science, and his biography is richly rewarding, engrossing, and informative. He deserves our congratulations."---H. W. Broer, Journal of the British Society for the History of Mathematics"Gray succeeds admirably in presenting both the conceptual and the historical context necessary to appreciate Poincaré's contributions. Gray's masterful biography may well serve as a standard example for future endeavors of this kind."---Tilman Sauer, Isis"The obvious virtue of this book is its comprehensiveness. The deeper virtue is to connect Poincaré's views of all the parts of his work and to encourage more of that. Gray gives us Poincaré's view of Science as a whole."---Colin McLarty, Mathematical Intelligencer"The book is an endless source of interesting insights by Poincaré. . . . I would recommend the book for mathematicians, mathematics educators, and philosophers in higher education who want a rich understanding of Poincaré, his work, and his times."---Mary L. Garner, Mathematics Teacher

I learned a lot and so will you'' Tim HarfordThomas Bayes was an eighteenth-century Presbyterian minister and amateur mathematician whose obscure life belied the profound impact of his work. Like most research into probability at the time, his theorem was mainly seen as relevant to games of chance, like dice and cards. But its implications soon became clear.Bayes'' theorem helps explain why highly accurate screening tests can lead to false positives, causing unnecessary anxiety for patients. A failure to account for it in court has put innocent people in jail. But its influence goes far beyond practical applications. A cornerstone of rational thought, Bayesian principles are used in modelling and forecasting. ''Superforecasters'', a group of expert predictors who outperform CIA analysts, use a Bayesian approach. And many argue that Bayes'' theorem is not just a useful tool, but a description of almost everything - that it is the underlying architecture of rationality, and of the human brain.Fusing biography, razor-sharp science communication and intellectual history, Everything Is Predictable is a captivating tour of Bayes'' theorem and its impact on modern life. From medical testing to artificial intelligence, Tom Chivers shows how a single compelling idea can have far-reaching consequences.

Book SynopsisTrade Review"A Choice Outstanding Academic Title of the Year""Outstanding. . . . A superb biographical rehabilitation of an indispensable natural scientist." * Kirkus Review starred review *"[Costa] gives naturalist Alfred Russel Wallace the biography he deserves in this definitive account. . . . Comprehensive and revelatory, this is a first-rate take on an overlooked figure in scientific history." * Publishers Weekly *"Radical by Nature uncovers fresh details about a remarkable, idiosyncratic scientist and social activist, showing how humans’ understanding of the world was fundamentally altered by his ideas." * Foreword Reviews, starred review *"Alfred Russel Wallace was perhaps the most famed naturalist of the Victorian age. . . . James T Costa’s hefty, in-depth account draws on letters, notebooks and journals to mark Wallace’s revolutionary life and achievements, on the 200th anniversary of his birth." * BBC Wildlife *"An expansive and insightful biography. . . . [Costa] offers a fine introduction to Wallace’s life and work for the uninitiated—and a revelatory portrait for those of us who thought we already knew him."---Jennie Erin Smith, Wall Street Journal"Alfred Russel Wallace, the codiscoverer of evolution by natural selection so often overshadowed by Charles Darwin, gets his star turn in this richly textured biography. . . . Deep research grounds the book, but Costa's prose is nevertheless breezy and informal, driving an often-exciting narrative." * Choice Reviews *"[Radical by Nature] is well-documented using Wallace’s own publications. . . . Costa’s biography helps us to see that Wallace was not, in fact, a case of split personality: he was engaged in a lifelong effort to find a moral agenda underlying the activities of nature and the forces that drive human interactions."---Peter Bowler, Current Biology"Costa’s stated aim of writing an updated biography has been more than realised; this book is a triumph! I tremendously enjoyed Radical by Nature and was very impressed with the depth of its scholarship. Next to an intimate portrait of this most fascinating scholar, Costa provides much detail on a critical period of scientific development and the social context in which it unfolded."---Leon Vlieger, The Inquisitive Biologist"A must-read not only for biogeographers, evolutionary biologists and historians of science, but also for anyone who is interested in modern history and the origins of current societies during colonial times. Alfred Russel Wallace deserves many more homages, but this loving tribute from James Costa is a major step towards putting him into the place he deserves in history."---Joaquín Hortal, Nature Ecology & Evolution"[Radical by Nature] earns its place alongside other Wallace biographies. . . . It is both a competent biography of an incredible scientist while also being a compelling narrative. . . . A new take on the life and accomplishments of Alfred Russel Wallace."---Jeremy B. Book SynopsisEver heard of Allied spy Noor Inayat Khan, a Muslim woman whom the Nazis considered highly dangerous? Or German painter and entomologist Maria Sibylla Merian, who planned and embarked on the world s first scientific expedition? How about Huang Daopo, the inventor who fled an abusive child marriage only to revolutionize textile production in China? Women have always been able to change the world, even when they didn t get the credit. In Wonder Women, author Sam Maggs introduces you to pioneering female scientists, engineers, mathematicians, adventurers, and inventors each profile a study in passion, smarts, and stick-to-itiveness, complete with portraits by Google doodler Sophia Foster-Dimino, an extensive bibliography, and a guide to present-day women-centric STEM organizations.Trade Review“Wonder Women isn’t just filled with extraordinary tales of female scientists and inventors—though there are plenty of them—[Maggs] also includes sections on espionage and adventure, fields not traditionally associated with STEM.” —Entertainment Weekly “I admire Maggs for making Wonder Women both thorough and easy to digest. When it comes to historical material like this, presentation matters . . . Maggs writes the descriptions of the women and their achievements in such a way that you’re inspired to take the ball and keep running.”—Nerdist “[Sam Maggs’s] profiles are more than just fun, they're genuinely astounding . . . [and] fantastic illustrations by Sophia Foster-Dimino bring these pioneering women to life.”—The Village Voice“Maggs' lineup of influential females is well curated and inclusive, while smart illustrations by Sophia Foster-Dimino bring the ladies to life. Wonder Women is a must-read for the girl who's a bit of a geek.”—BookPage“A wonderful and necessary read. Although it says 25 women, there are so many more women in here than that . . . Not only does Maggs present their awesomeness with a sardonic wit needed to deride the patriarchal stage these fantastic women performed on, she is the gender defender at every turn. If only these brainiac ladies had Maggs by their side in their own time.”—Geeks of Doom“Wonder Women is an absolute delight! As told by Sam Maggs, the lives of these trailblazing women leap off the page, bursting with entertaining anecdotes and fascinating facts that are sure to capture the imaginations of younger readers. The fantastically diverse assortment of women profiled in this book is proof positive that women have always accomplished amazing things, and the interviews with contemporary women illuminate the extraordinary achievements women are making (and the extraordinary challenges women still face) today. As Maggs emphasizes in her introduction, representation matters, and Wonder Women is an inspiring example of exactly the kind of representation we need to see a lot more of.”—Anita Sarkeesian, Feminist Frequency “I honestly can't remember the last time I picked up a book and read straight through to the end without looking up. Each one of these baller women deserves their own shelf. Wonder Women is a must-read in my house and should be in yours, too.”—Margaret Stohl, author of Beautiful Creatures “Too often women in history—particularly in STEM fields—are ignored and forgotten. Not by Sam Maggs. Through brilliant writing that is both factual and fun, Sam pulls back the curtain of history to show us just how kickass these amazing wonder women are. Be smart like the ladies described in this book and grab a copy today!”—Beth Revis, author of Across the Universe and A World Without You“Maggs's message—delivered in a snappy, girl-power tone—and her subjects—any one of whom could star in a book of her own—are timely and compelling.”—Shelf Awareness “Maggs condenses these storied lives effectively, and young feminists and supporters of women in STEM will applaud.”—Booklist“In a down-to-earth and often humorous tone, Maggs provides a[n] . . . anthology of biographies on trailblazing women [that] is likely to draw attention from a variety of readers but will especially appeal to those interested in women’s history and STEM . . . ”—Library Journal“Whether you want to know about suffragists, awesome historical lady ninjas, or the other butt kicking, trailblazing smarties in between, Wonder Women will have something for you!” —Amy Poehler’s Smart Girls“We could all stand to learn more about women in STEM fields, and Maggs', whose book The Fangirl's Guide to the Galaxy is a gem, is just the writer to lead the way."—Bustle “History should be everyone’s favorite subject, and if more people approached it (and wrote about it) like Maggs does, perhaps it would be.”—PopMatters“Embracing incredible women from all ages, of various races, and from different continents, the accounts of these extraordinary figures are spellbinding and inspirational.”—Manhattan Book Review“[Wonder Women] is a valuable addition to women's studies. Maggs successfully shows that women can perform as well as men if they are given an equal playing ground.”—Washington Book Review“These are incredible and inspirational true stories of women who dared to dream in a man's world. Additional, briefer vignettes of other notable and accomplished women round out this fascinating, educational 'must-have' for both school and public library collections.”—Midwest Book Review

He then campaigned for the reform of technical education in an alliance with like-minded campaigners which resulted in the Technical Instruction Act of 1889. Roscoe was also the Liberal MP for South Manchester between 1885 and 1895, one of the few academic chemists to become a member of the House of Commons.
