Book SynopsisA reassessment of the regency of Queen Mariana of Austria (1634-1696) during the minority of her son, King Carlos II of Spain, offering a new perspective on the Spanish monarchy in the later seventeenth century.Trade Review“Contains many insights that help us to understand a very complex series of events. This is an important book that people will want to read. It will be invaluable for undergraduate courses on Spanish and European history, as well as an essential point of reference for future research into the exciting world of early modern Spanish political and cultural history.”—Alistair Malcolm Bulletin of Spanish Studies“An impressive work of scholarship that adds a great deal not only to our knowledge of late Hapsburg Spain, but also to the field of queenship studies by increasing our understanding of both the life of this formidable royal woman and the mechanisms and challenges of female regency itself.”—Elena Woodacre Royal Studies Journal“Built upon a base of impressive archival research, Mitchell has provided an illuminating analysis of a ruler whose historical reputation has been the victim of incomplete, stereotypical, and even misogynist characterizations.”—Elizabeth A. Lehfeldt Renaissance Studies“An imaginative and wholly original account of a ruler who is regarded as the personification of Spain’s seventeenth-century decline as an imperial power. Mitchell revises the traditional view of Mariana as the hapless pawn of her confessors and male courtiers and shows her to be a fiercely independent woman capable of decisive action in domestic and foreign affairs as well as a ruler who successfully managed to defend the interests and reputation of Spain’s Habsburg monarchy. This book is a valuable contribution to the growing body of literature on early modern queenship.”—Richard L. Kagan, author of Clio and the Crown: The Politics of History in Medieval and Early Modern Spain“Countering the common perception of Mariana de Austria as weak, too young to govern, and easily manipulated, Silvia Mitchell demonstrates that Mariana was a forceful, effective regent during the period of her son’s minority (1665-75). Grounded solidly in fresh archival research, Queen, Mother, and Stateswoman will advance the historical debate on Mariana, on seventeenth-century royal favorites, and on the court of Charles II of Spain.”—Magdalena Sánchez, author of The Empress, the Queen, and the Nun: Women and Power at the Court of Philip III of Spain“Mitchell mines court archives and state records to demonstrate that Mariana of Austria had clear and consistent diplomatic and military strategies as queen regent, and he establishes her as part of a long tradition of strong female leadership in early modern European courts. This work fills a significant gap in our understanding of the late seventeenth-century Spanish court and supports recent arguments in favor of Spanish resilience rather than decline under the last Habsburgs.”—Jodi Campbell, author of At the First Table: Food and Social Identity in Early Modern Spain“Silvia Mitchell’s work is an important revisionist study of the regency of Mariana of Austria, mother of the last Spanish Habsburg. Based upon wide-ranging and detailed research, it has considerable implications for a much more positive understanding than has prevailed hitherto not only of the last decades of Habsburg rule in Spain but also, more broadly, of female political agency in early modern Europe.”—Christopher Storrs, author of The Resilience of the Spanish Monarchy, 1665–1700“Mit der weitgehenden Revision älterer Bilder vom Handeln einer Regentin steht Mitchells Buch zugleich in einer Reihe mit kürzeren wie längeren Untersuchungen, die immer wieder nachweisen, wie stark unser Blick auf dynastische Herrschaft und die Relevanz von Frauen in diesem Kontext bis heute von Sichtweisen des 19. Jahrhunderts bzw.”—Katrin Keller Zeitschrift für Historische Forschung—Redaktion“Die Untersuchung dieser Regentin am Vorabend des Spanischen Erbfolgekrieges aber einen wichtigen Beitrag zur spanischen und habsburgischen Geschichte und zur Geschlechtergeschichte und kann als Ausgangpunkt für einen internationalen Vergleich dienen.”—Elena Taddei Sehepunkte“This book sets out to explore and answer certain questions pertaining to regency, agency, favouritism and motherhood, and satisfactorily delivers.”—Jonathan Spangler Journal of Ecclesiastical History“Silvia Mitchell’s book uses a microhistorical approach to comprehend larger questions, such as the political and diplomatic situation of the Spanish Monarchy during the second half of the seventeenth century. She also employs methodology from gender studies and queenship that allows her to shed light on new and insightful aspects of Mariana’s regency which have not been studied.”—Valentina Marguerite Kozák The Middle Ground Journal“This book differs from other preexisting studies, as it intelligently examines Mariana’s regency without focusing on the prominence of [Nithard and Valenzuela] . . . allowing the queen mother to be the centre figure of the research.”—Valentina Marguerite Kozák The Middle Ground JournalTable of ContentsContentAcknowledgmentsNotes on NamesAbbreviationsDynastic Chart Introduction: The Historical and International Significance of Mariana’s Regency1 A Habsburg Destiny, 1634–16652 Mariana’s Court and Political System, 1665–16673 Resolving Philip IV’s Legacy, 1665–16684 Consolidating Power at Home, 1668–16705 At the Pinnacle of Power, 1670 to November 5, 1675 6 The Politics of Motherhood, November 6, 1675, to 16777 Reconciliation, Vindication, Triumph, 1678–1679Conclusion: Mariana’s Historical LegacyNotesBibliography Index

  • The Story of Tutankhamun

Yale University Press The Story of Tutankhamun

Book SynopsisA lively new biography of Tutankhamun—published for the hundredth anniversary of his tomb’s modern discoveryTrade Review“Using the most up-to-date archaeological and art historical evidence, Shaw presents his preferred version of Tutankhamun’s life robustly and well, with a view to presenting Tutankhamun as a living, breathing human being rather than a demi-god. . . . The book requires little previous knowledge of ancient Egypt, if any, and is highly recommended as an introduction to Tutankhamun’s world.”—Nigel Fletcher-Jones, thepast.com“An ideal introduction for those new to the field, and a comprehensive survey for those who have been fortunate to see many of the tomb treasures since they have been exhibited from 1962 onwards.”—Nicholas Cranfield, Church Times"Overall, this is a lively and readable book, which should encourage a continuing fascination with the young pharaoh."—Hilary Forrest, Ancient Egypt Magazine“Shaw’s compelling portrait of the young pharaoh in life and in death is based on the latest research and impeccable sources. Here we move far beyond Carter and Carnarvon into the life of the king himself. This brilliant achievement will appeal to anyone interested in archaeology and ancient Egypt. A lovely book!”—Brian Fagan, author of Lord and Pharaoh“A fascinating, up-to-date and superbly well-informed account of Egypt’s most famous Pharaoh. Shaw has done a wonderful job.”—Robert Twigger, author of Red Nile“This exceptional account not only brings the reign of Tutankhamun back to life, it also shows the ruler in a new light, not only as king of ancient Egypt, but as a human being.”—Christina Geisen, University of Cambridge“Tutankhamun and his tomb have captured the hearts of all of us. His story contains the thrill of magic and curses. This book brings with it more magic with a new take on the time of the golden boy.”—Zahi Hawass, author of Tutankhamun and the Golden Age of the Pharaohs“Shaw writes in an engaging manner, with the erudition of a scholar and the flair of a journalist.”—Ronald J. • Eleanor of Aquitaine

John Wiley and Sons Ltd Eleanor of Aquitaine

Book SynopsisThis fascinating new biography tells the story of one of the most influential figures of the twelfth century, Eleanor of Aquitaine, successively queen of France and of England. In tracing her life story Professor Owen reassesses her political importance during the reigns of her husband Henry II and her sons, Richard the Lionheart and John, and aims to separate the true historical Eleanor from the Eleanor of legend.Trade Review"Roy Owen's intimate knowledge of medieval literature and his discrimination in using it enable him to look at Eleanor of Aquitaine both through the legends that built up around her life and through medieval epic and romance .... A stimulating and challenging book that depicts Eleanor sympathetically as a credible person." Marjorie Chibnall, Emeritus Fellow, Clare College, Cambridge "D. D. R. Owen, well-known for his translations from Cretien de Troyes, has written a fine addition to the already substantial shelf of Eleanor of Aquitaine biography. He has something brand new and convincing to argue: that Eleanor's personality must have been shaped by the literary milieu in which she grew up, and that legends about her, in turn, shaped some of the literary traditions that developed alongside and after her career. This biography is as much about the literary response, medieval and modern, to the facts of Eleanor's life as it is a record of the facts themselves." Medium Aevum "This is a fascinating and scholarly examination of how history and romance have become interwoven in Eleanor of Aquitaine. Recommended for academic and large public libraries." Library Journal "Eleanor of Aquitaine is the stuff of which rather too much history has been made. It is therefore a relief to read D. D. R. Owen's new and well-judged assessment of this fascinating and enigmatic figure. This biography succeeds where so many others have failed precisely because of its honesty and its refusal to compromise with the evidence." HistorianTable of ContentsList of Plates. • The Iron Princess

Harvard University Press The Iron Princess

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisIn the bloodiest conflict Europe had ever experienced, Amalia Elisabeth fought to save her tiny German state, her Calvinist church, and her children’s inheritance. Tryntje Helfferich reveals how this embattled ruler used diplomacy to play the European powers against one another, while raising one of the continent’s most effective fighting forces.Trade ReviewImpressive...Helfferich tracks Amalia Elisabeth's bold, often duplicitous, but ultimately successful diplomatic manoeuvrings in meticulous, indeed exhaustive, detail...In an age when so much of what passes for 'history' in the bookshops is merely the competent journalistic synthesis of earlier (and often better) books, it is refreshing to come across a work that is grounded in original, multilingual archival scholarship and has something genuinely new to say...The Iron Princess is far more than merely the biography of a singularly forceful, if despotic, woman. Its narrative provides an exceptionally sure-footed guide through the mazes of European princely politics at their most labyrinthine, and offers an entirely new insight into the role of the smaller states in shaping the great Westphalian treaties that settled the European state system for the best part of the next two centuries. If the Iron Princess was more fortunate in life than she deserved, she has undoubtedly continued her lucky run in this fine biography. -- John Adamson * Literary Review *Like Elizabeth I of England, Amalia Elisabeth was a mistress of delay, and The Iron Princess shows how she successfully navigated the maze of legal, military, and diplomatic obstacles that awaited her when she assumed power. Helfferich deftly reconstructs the dynamics of power, religious division, and social opposition that Amalia Elisabeth confronted. A superb book. -- Orest Ranum, The Johns Hopkins UniversityThis deeply researched book will make a major contribution to what we know about the Thirty Years War. Helfferich's work will place Amalia Elisabeth of Hesse-Cassel squarely onto the mental map of anyone who takes a serious interest in the most protracted and important European conflict of the seventeenth century. -- Christopher R. Friedrichs, University of British ColumbiaIn this detailed and impressively researched study of Amalia Elisabeth, Helfferich offers a shrewd and sophisticated analysis of the problems of female rule in an age of crisis, combined with an equally penetrating interpretation of princely politics within the Holy Roman Empire during the closing stages of the Thirty Years War. It is an extraordinary story of an extraordinary ruler, deftly told. -- Mary Lindemann, University of MiamiHelfferich's exploration of the intricate political maneuverings of Amalia Elisabeth offers not only a fascinating vignette of the Thirty Years' War, but also a most valuable scholarly contribution and corrective to the political and religious history of the first European war. It was largely due to the landgravine's tenacity and shrewd insight into politics that Calvinism was legalized in the Peace of Westphalia. -- Sigrun Haude, University of Cincinnati

Book SynopsisQueen María of Castile, wife of Alfonso V, the Magnanimous, king of the Crown of Aragon, governed Catalunya in the mid-fifteenth century while her husband conquered and governed the kingdom of Naples. For twenty-six years, she maintained a royal court and council separate from and roughly equivalent to those of Alfonso in Naples. Such legitimately sanctioned political authority is remarkable given that she ruled not as queen in her own right but rather as Lieutenant-General of Catalunya with powers equivalent to the king''s. María does not fit conventional images of a queen as wife and mother; indeed, she had no children and so never served as queen-regent for any royal heirs in their minorities or exercised a queen-mother''s privilege to act as diplomat when arranging the marriages of her children and grandchildren. But she was clearly more than just a wife offering advice: she embodied the king''s personal authority and was second only to the king himself. • Cecily Bonville-Grey - Marchioness of Dorset:

Collective Ink Cecily Bonville-Grey - Marchioness of Dorset:

Book SynopsisCecily Bonville-Grey was one of the richest women of her time, inheriting the Harington and Bonville fortunes as a young child. In 1474, at the age of fifteen, she married Thomas Grey, the eldest son of Elizabeth Woodville from her first marriage to Sir John Grey. When Thomas was created Marquis of Dorset a year later, Cecily became the Marchioness of Dorset alongside him. During her lifetime she was connected to many of the fifteenth and sixteenth century personalities that we read about today. Her stepfather was William, Lord Hastings, her mother-in-law Elizabeth Woodville, the White Queen. Her mother was a daughter of the great Neville family and her uncle was the Earl of Warwick, also known as the ‘kingmaker’ having assisted his cousin, Edward IV, in his path to the throne. Her second husband was a son of the ancient Stafford family and Lady Jane Grey was a direct descendant of hers. During the Wars of the Roses and the emergence of the new Tudor dynasty, Cecily was witness to many of the events that unfolded and her own story is intertwined with many of these events. Yet she remains relatively unknown. This is Cecily’s story.

Book SynopsisThe link between Hitler''s Third Reich and European royalty has gone largely unexplored due to the secrecy surrounding royal families. Now, in Royals and the Reich, Jonathan Petropoulos uses unprecedented access to royal archives to tell the fascinating story of Queen Victoria''s great-grandsons, the Princes of Hesse, and the important role they played in the Nazi regime. Petropolous tells the fascinating tale of how, lured by prominent positions in the Nazi regime and highly susceptible to nationalist appeals, the princes became enthusiastic supporters of Hitler and helped make the Nazis socially acceptable to wealthy, high-society patrons. Permitted access to Hessen family private papers and the Royal Archives at Windsor Castle, Petropoulos follows the story of the House of Hesse through to its tragic denouement - the princes'' betrayal and persecution by an increasingly paranoid Hitler, followed by prosecution after the war.Trade ReviewMeticulously researched, 'Royals and the Reich' is a densly written but completely fascinating account of a family and its fortunes. * Peter Burton, Beige, Vol. 2, Issue 4 *Jonathan Petropoulous's 'Royals and the Reich: The Princes von Hessen in Nazi Germany' is to be welcomed. * Peter Burton, Beige, Vol.2, Issue 4 *Table of ContentsIntroduction ; 1. • Cambridge University Press Encomium Emmae Reginae 4 Camden Classic Reprints

Book SynopsisThe Encomium Emmae Reginae is a political tract in praise, as its title suggests, of Queen Emma, daughter of Duke Richard I of Normandy, wife of King Ethelred the Unready from 1002 to 1016, and wife of the Danish conqueror King Cnut from 1017 to 1035. It is a primary source of the utmost importance for our understanding of the Danish conquest of England in the early eleventh century, and for the political intrigue in the years which followed the death of King Cnut in 1035. It offers a remarkable account of a woman who was twice a queen, and of her determination to retain her power as queen-mother. This reprint, which contains the definitive text and translation of the Encomium Emmae Reginae first published in 1949, traces the basic outline of Queen Emma's career and transports us to the heart of eleventh-century politics by defining as clearly as possible the historical context in which the Encomium was written.Trade Review"This reprint of the Encomium Emmae Reginae is most welcome. not only does it make an important eleventh-century source of English and women's history more readily available, but Simon Keynes' supplementary introduction provides a helpful and thorough discussion of the historical issues raised in this work." The Medieval ReviewTable of ContentsPreface to the 1998 reprint; Introduction to the 1998 edition; Abbreviations and bibliography; Introduction; Encomium Emmae Reginae; Appendices; General index; Index to the text of the Encomium; Glossary.

Book SynopsisNot unlike the elusive figure played by Greta Garbo, the real Queen Christina stood among the most flamboyant and controversial figures of the seventeenth century. All of Sweden could not contain her ambition or quench her thirst for adventure. Freed from her crown, she cut a breathtaking path across Europe -- spending madly, seeking out a more majestic throne, and stirring up trouble wherever she went. With a dazzling narrative voice and unerring sense of the period, Veronica Buckley goes beyond historical myth to breathe life into an extraordinary woman who set the world on fire and became an icon of her age -- a time of enormous change when Europe stood at the crossroads of religion and science, antiquity and modernity, war and peace. This P.S. edition features an extra 16 pages of insights into the book, including author interviews, recommended reading, and more.

Penguin Publishing Group When Character Was King a Story A Story of Ronald

    10 in stock

Book SynopsisNo one has ever captured Ronald Reagan like Peggy Noonan. In When Character Was King, Noonan brings her own reflections on Reagan to bear as well as new stories—from Presidents George W. Bush and his father, George H. W. Bush, his Secret Service men and White House colleagues, his wife, his daughter Patti Davis, and his close friends—to reveal the true nature of a man even his opponents now view as a maker of big history. Marked by incisive wit and elegant prose, When Character Was King will both enlighten and move readers. It may well be the last word on Ronald Reagan, not only as a leader but as a man.
