Book SynopsisIn 1930s Luang Prabang, the beautiful and demure Kham-Phiou was much admired. On a New Year's Day, the life of the aristocratic young woman changed when she caught the eye of a sophisticated older man - Prince Souvanna Phouma. The prince fell madly in love with Kham-Phiou and was determined to marry her against all odds. His family wanted a marriage within the dynasty, while her widowed mother feared Palace intrigues. After the wedding, life in the prince's family home was difficult, but Kham-Phiou began to adapt until the prince decided they should move to Vientiane for the sake of his career. The tale of the tragic love story spans over half a century and is set against the little-known backdrop of old-world Laos where ancient customs and superstitions still held sway. In this charming and moving personal account incorporating the social history of Laos, Manisamouth, granddaughter of Kham-Phiou, brings her grandmother's untold story to life, accompanied by evocative black and white photographs, family trees of the Luang Prabang Royals and Kham-Phiou's lineage, and includes a section on Lao history.

  • Peeters Publishers Chronicle of King Gälawdewos (1540-1559): T.

    5 in stock

Book SynopsisThe Chronicle of King Gälawdewos (r. 1540–1559), reporting the nineteen years of the king’s reign, is one of the most useful and significant historical sources for the history of Christian-Muslim relation in the sixteenth century of Ethiopia and the Horn. It represents a peculiar text in Gǝʿǝz historiography both because of its narrative structure and the underlying sources used by the chronicler. Numerous Arabisms appear in the text, which eventually suggest that the Chronicle was written by a person with an outstanding knowledge of Arabic, in 1561. The book presents a new critical edition based on all available manuscripts and provides some detailed introductory notes and an English translation. The new edition yields philological findings concerning the Chronicle of King Gälawdewos in particular and new inputs that call for re-editing the Ethiopian royal chronicles in general. It also adds valuable by now not recorded items for Gǝʿǝz lexicography and corrects historical distortions resulted from the previous edition. Above all, the work provides a text-critically established edition of the Chronicle of King Gälawdewos accompanied by an up-to-date concisely annotated translation, which offer new insights into the late medieval history and historiography of Ethiopia and the Horn of Africa.

  • Transregional Lordship and the Italian

Amsterdam University Press Transregional Lordship and the Italian

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisRené de Challant, whose holdings ranged from northwestern Italy to the Alps and over the mountains into what is today western Switzerland and eastern France, was an Italian and transregional dynast. The spatially dispersed kind of lordship that he practiced and his lifetime of service to the house of Savoy, especially in the context of the Italian Wars, show how the Sabaudian lands, neighboring Alpine states, and even regions further afield were tied to the history of the Italian Renaissance. Situating René de Challant on the edge of the Italian Renaissance helps us to understand noble kin relations, political networks, finances, and lordship with more precision. A spatially inflected analysis of René’s life brings to light several themes related to transregional lordship that have been obscured due to the traditional tendencies of Renaissance studies. It uncovers an ‘Italy’ whose boundaries extend not just into the Mediterranean, but into regions beyond the Alps.Trade Review"This is a thoroughly researched study based on vast archival materials in over a dozen different archives in France, Italy, and Switzerland. And as a study of lordship—the exercise of noble privileges and responsibilities, or as the author puts it, the exercise of spatial politics—this is a fascinating and significant case study that deserves a wide readership."- Mack P. Holt, Renaissance and Reformation, 43.4 (Fall 2021) "C’est donc un bel ouvrage qui, en plus de renouveler le regard sur un personnage important des guerres d’Italie et pour le duché de Savoie, propose de reconsidérer le rôle de l’État durant la Renaissance italienne en partant de la subsistance de liens féodaux étendus à l’échelle européenne."- Jean Sénié, Laboratoire italien, October 2020 "Specialists in the wide range of fields that Vester touches on, especially for those with interests in transregional connections, will find his work a treasure trove of useful information for comparative purposes. The breadth, depth, and thoroughness of Vester’s scholarship are truly impressive, and offer a good indication of what research in the history of smaller states and less well-known political actors might yet produce." - James R. In this volume, 20 scholars from 12 different countries contribute to creating a broader perspective on Charles XII and the Great Northern War in European history.
