Christian Focus Publications Ltd Brother Andrew: Behind Enemy Lines
Book SynopsisIn the years before Andrew van der Bijl took the name Brother Andrew, he was no stranger to adventure and intrigue – in fact, he craved it. As a young lad, he was forever getting into mischief, and even risked his life during the Nazi occupation of Holland by setting off fireworks in the faces of German soldiers! Years later, God used this same thirst for danger and excitement as Andrew smuggled Bibles into Communist countries to help the persecuted, underground church and bring light to darkened hearts. Enemy lines and hostile borders mean nothing to God or to Andrew, who still works to assist the persecuted church across the world through the organization he founded, Open Doors.Trade ReviewIn Behind Enemy Lines, Nancy Drummond tells the story of what happened when Brother Andrew- as Andrew was later known- became a Christian. She describes how God used him in incredible and miraculous ways to bring the Gospel to persecuted Christians living in Communist countries, where belief in Jesus was against the law aand Christians were forbidden to meet, or even own a Bible. -- Free-Magazine- Free Church of Scotland Youth Magazine

Reaktion Books Margery Kempe: A Mixed Life
Book SynopsisThis is a new account of the late-fourteenth-century mystic and pilgrim Margery Kempe. Kempe, who had 14 children, travelled all over Europe and recorded a series of unusual events and religious visions in her work The Book of Margery Kempe, which is often called the first autobiography in the English language. Anthony Bale charts her life, and tells her story through the places, relationships, objects and experiences that influenced her. Extensive quotation from Kempe's Book, and generous illustration, gives fascinating insight into the life of a medieval woman. Margery Kempe is situated within the religious controversies of her time, and her religious visions and later years put in context. Lastly there is the story of the rediscovery, in the 1930s, of the unique manuscript of her autobiography.Trade Review"Margery Kempe of Lynn Norfolk took pains in the decades of her prime to have her life as mother, wife, and pilgrim recorded for posterity. With erudition and sympathy, Bale frames Margery-a doubting, aching, troubled, and fiercely independent woman-within the European cities that staged her life, and so makes her more familiar than any fifteenth-century woman has ever been." -- Miri Rubin, Professor of Medieval and Early Modern History, Queen Mary University of London, author of "Cities of Strangers: Making Lives in Medieval Europe" "Margery Kempe: A Mixed Life is an evocative, vivid, and learned study of a complicated and intriguing text, The Book of Margery Kempe. Bale's captivating study blends rigorously researched biography with incisive analysis of the text. The book combines academic prowess with an almost poetic representation of people, events, and places, and brings to the fore the trials and triumphs of Kempe's negotiation of her mixed life." -- Laura Kalas, Senior Lecturer in Medieval Literature, Swansea University, author of "Margery Kempe's Spiritual Medicine: Suffering, Transformation and the Life-course"

Grosvenor House Publishing Ltd Faith Always Works: The Death of a Believer
Book SynopsisIn early 2016 I found myself laying in a hospital bed at the Royal Marsden in Fulham, diagnosed with terminal cancer, I decided to write about my faith in Christ; what it is and how it has been shaped and tested by a life that is lived out in the unpredictability of a world that can be so harsh and cruel. My starting point is to examine what sin is and what it does, paving the way for me to explain the necessity of salvation and what it does. I have made this my starting point because this is where faith begins. The fundamental message of the book is to acknowledge that, as a Christian, life can be filled with extreme pain, confusion and disillusionment and begs for meaningful answers to some very serious questions. The book takes an honest look at faith under the examination of someone who has experienced the safety of Christianity from childhood, yet along the way became one of the biggest sceptics of the Christianity that I saw around me. It was a scepticism that led me to the point of considering abandoning whatever faith I thought I had. This is a dilemma that I know a lot of Christians are tempted by and I hope that this book will give to them the encouragement, support and determination to press on. In this matter I attempt to examine what genuine faith is and what it is not, what it will do and what it will not do. I seek to highlight that the person with genuine faith must expect and be prepared for their faith to be tried and tested by God Himself and what His purpose in doing so is. The conclusion that the book as a whole alludes to, is that whilst there are times when faith does not seem to work, the faithfulness of what God has accomplished through Jesus Christ determines that faith always works.

Highland Books John Nelson Darby: Prophetic Pioneer
Book SynopsisDid God call the Church to be an institution? The Reformation gave Europe national churches, but these came to disappoint enthusiastic believers as lacking commitment. Was the right exit policy simply to join 'free' presbyterian or congregational-type churches, as found say in America? By the 1820s, the more strategic thinkers felt not. Some followed Newman into Catholicism: other pre-charismatics advocate an ongoing apostolate that would recapture prophetic gifts: J N Darby was led to the fierce conclusion that all churches, as man-made institutions, were bound to fail. The believer's true hope was the return of Jesus Christ. With others, Darby pioneered a less formal association of believers, free of clergy and founded on radical holiness. Darby was a tireless traveler, talented linguist and Bible translator. His influence is still felt in systematic theology, missionary societies, para- and house-church movements, possibly even in US foreign policy towards the state of Israel.

Muddy Pearl The Accidental Social Entrepreneur
Book SynopsisThe remarkable story of one gutsy contractor's determination to end poverty in Africa. Grant Smith is not a visionary or an enthusiastic missionary. He's a problem solver. When confronted with the desperate problems of poverty he witnessed in Africa, he did the only thing he knew how to do--business. Business that would provide jobs and pay people enough so that they would not have to rely on charity to send their kids to school, so that none would be forced to live in a tin shed without water, electricity, sewerage, or dignity, fighting off the threat of pneumonia every time it rained. His venture led to a great challenge: become the biggest house-builder in Kenya. Both humorous and realistic, Smith tells of his successes and failures with projects as diverse as growing oil crops, a road-building scheme, house building, and selling old gas pumps. With faith in God's provision--and a little bewilderment--Smith wrestles with difficulties that every entrepreneur knows too well: finding investment funding only to lose it again, acquiring trustworthy business partners, confronting bribery and bureaucracy, corruption and culture. He is not the biggest house-builder in Kenya (yet!), but Smith has stumbled on a near-miraculous way of unlocking long-term financial provision for local Christian charities. For those who dream of making a difference for communities affected by poverty, this story is inspiring and thought-provoking. It encourages readers to see how ordinary people have been created for a purpose and have the potential to facilitate miracles. The Accidental Social Entrepreneur is a real challenge to consider how we might use the gifts and resources we have been given by God to change lives.

From the saddle of his own aged Harley, Nigel draws fascinating biblical comparisons and thought-provoking reflections on God's faithfulness, both on the road, and on our journey through life.We are also given a glimpse into his early life, as he begins by tracing the striking transformation on his own journey into faith. A natural story teller, Nigel recalls these adventures with depth, simplicity, and humour.

Pentagon Press Ji Xianlin: A Critical Biography
Book SynopsisJi Xianlin: A Critical Biography reconstructs the academic, professional and personal journey of the doyen of Indology, Buddhism and Orientalism in China. Though his On a Long Journey of life remains full of trials and tribulations, and an emotional world buried deep under the familial and professional obligations, nonetheless, true to the evaluation, he remains indispensable as far as China’s translation, comparative literature, Dunhuang-Turfan studies and cultural exchanges are concerned. India runs through his veins throughout this journey, whether it is his path breaking textual research on the dissemination of paper and silk from China to India or the sugar from India to China, or the Indian Literature in China and translation of Ramayana, Panchtantra, Shanakuntla etc. from Sanskrit, or the reminiscences of his visits to India, one and all have been supplemented with credible primary sources from historical records. It is not easy to weave a tapestry of the life and works of a person as versatile as Ji Xianlin, but the authors have done a remarkable job in mirroring Ji Xianlin’s journey through the Qing, Republican and the People’s Republic. I believe this tapestry will be woven uninterrupted, for Ji Xianlin remains a link between the past and the future.

Book SynopsisI never wanted to be a prophet... Read the biography of a woman of the people, who was called by God to serve Him by being the interpreter of His word as a prophet. The author, Matthias Holzbauer, passes on stories from Gabriele, in which she describes her childhood and youth. She tells what it meant for her to accept the call of God and to serve Him, the Eternal, as the interpreter of His word of light. And she accepted this call. One hundred percent until today. I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth. So spoke Jesus of Nazareth 2000 years ago. Gabriele is the living proof that also today, in our time, God does not let Himself be silenced for the Free Spirit blows where it will. Gabriele is the proof that God, the Father of us all, loves His children. For He never forsakes us not even in times of upheavals and disasters, into which we human beings have maneuvered ourselves. Wilfrid Laurier University Press The Queer Evangelist
Book SynopsisCheri DiNovo went from living on the streets as a teenager to performing the first legal same-sex marriage registered in Canada in 2001 as a United Church minister. This story of one queer kid will hopefully inspire other young people (queer and not) to resist the system and change it. In The Queer Evangelist, Rev. Dr. Cheri DiNovo (CM) tells her story, from her roots as a young socialist activist in the 1960s to ordained minister in the '90s to member of provincial parliament. As the New Democratic member representing Parkdale-High Park in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario from 2006 to 2017, DiNovo passed more LGBTQ bills than anyone in Canadian history. She describes the behind-the-scenes details of major changes to the law, including Toby's Law, the first Transgender Rights legislation in North America in a major jurisdiction. She also passed bills banning conversion therapy, proclaiming parent equality for LGBTQ parents, and for enshrining in Ontario law the Trans Day of Remembrance. On this day in the legislature, the provincial government is mandated to observe a minute of silence while Trans murders and suicides are detailed. Interspersed with her political work DiNovo describes her conversion to religious life, her theological work, and her ongoing struggle with the Christian Right. Cheri DiNovo's story shows how queers can be both people of faith and critics of religion, illustrating how one can resist and change the repressive systems from within. Her book is the story of queer justice realized and a story of hope for queer (and other) kids everywhere.

Book SynopsisAt a time when society is more fractured than ever before, beloved Jesuit priest Gregory Boyle invites us to see the world through a new lens of connection and build the loving community that we long to live ina perfect message for readers of Anne Lamott, Mary Oliver, and Richard Rohr.Over the past thirty years, Gregory Boyle has transformed tens of thousands of lives through his work as the founder of Homeboy Industries, the largest gang-intervention program in the world. The program runs on two unwavering principles: 1) We are all unshakably good (no exceptions), and 2) we belong to each other (no exceptions). Boyle believes that these two ideas allow all of us to cultivate a new way of seeing. Rather than the tribalism that excludes and punishes, this new narrative proposes a village that cherishes. Pooka, a former gang member who now oversees the program's housing division, puts it plainly: ';Here, love is our lens. It is how we see things.' I

Zondervan David Wilkerson
Book SynopsisHow did one man''s unshakable faith shape the future of thousands struggling to break free from the grip of addiction, poverty, and sin? Join Gary Wilkerson as he shares a never-before-seen look at the incredible life and legacy of his father, bestselling author and evangelist David Wilkerson. This book tells the story of David Wilkerson, a man who refused to give up on those on the streets even when they had given up on themselves, and who saw in the eyes of drug addicts and gang members what others failed to see--the unconditional love of Jesus Christ. But who was David Wilkerson? When Wilkerson moved to New York from rural Pennsylvania in 1958 to confront the gangs who ran the streets, he was a skinny, 120-pound man. Wilkerson was always the real deal, full of passion and conviction, not interested in what others said was the right thing to do.An evangelist both in America and overseas, David authored books that inspired people to be serious about their relationship with Christ.
