    3 in stock

Book SynopsisThe volume contains the text of 23 papers read at the colloquium (Louvain, 21st-23rd September 2000) on Zeger-Bernard van Espen (1646-1728), the most important canonist of the ancient Louvain University.Several contributions seek to gauge the influence of Van Espen in a number of European countries: France, Italy, Spain, the German Empire and the United Provinces. Van Espen's influence was not merely investigated from a geographical perspective. The question was also raised as to how well his ideas survived the passage of time. How was Van Espen viewed in the 19th century? How was he used or misused?Hitherto, those who inquired into the personality and work of Van Espen have treated him almost exclusively from a 'Jansenist' perspective. The present volume seeks to break through this one-sidedness by approaching the man and his work from a legal and theological viewpoint, and from that of canon law and ecclesiology. From Gratian's "Concordia discordantium canonum" to Van Espen's "Separando certa ab incertis explicare et conciliare": the Louvain canonist was eminently aware of the canonical tradition within which he developed and formulated his ideas. More than being a Jansenist or a regalist or a Gallican, Van Espen was a jurist, who thought and reasoned on the basis of the law and structures of the Church. The protection of "that which is right", including the subjective rights of clerics and lay people, was his subject, his goal and his duty. On the basis of a sincere scientific, historical and philological approach to canon law, he came to conclusions which did not necessarily correspond to Rome's views on Church and State, moral theology, law and ecclesiology. This is not merely attributable to his Jansenist, rigorist, Gallican and regalist prejudices in these sensitive areas, but, probably to a greater extent than has been assumed hitherto, to his training as an academic, as a jurist, and as a canonist.

Book SynopsisThe discoveries of the Dead Sea, as we are used to call them, have changed the scholarly landscape of textual criticism to a considerable, if not enormous, extent. The state of the art with respect to both the textual development and the interpretation of the literary and theological form of individual biblical books has been seriously challenged. It appears as if no single book can escape from reinterpretation from this perspective. One of the collections of texts that can serve as an outstanding example on which the Dead Sea Scrolls have shed new light, can be found in the so-called Historical Books. Against that background, and in co-operation with the Louvain Centre for Septuagint Studies and Textual Criticism (CSSTC) of the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (BE) and the Universidad de Alcala (ES), the Universidad Complutense de Madrid (ES) has organised an international expert symposium on the theme: 'After Qumran: old and new editions of biblical texts - the Historical Books' (31 May ' 2 June 2010). This volume presents the proceedings of this highly enriching symposium.

    3 in stock

Book SynopsisThis volume contains the proceedings of an international Q symposium held at Graz University on July 20 – 23, 2011. The conference presented the current state of Q studies and spelled out their future directions through interpretations of particular texts and methodological reflections. One important thrust of the discussions during the conference concerned the literary character of Q: Is it possible or indeed necessary to reconstruct the wording of Q? How coherent, “finished” and scribalized was Q? Other central topics related to the social and theological importance of Q: What were the contexts of the composition of Q? How can the relationships between Q and ancient Judaism(s) and nascent Christ groups be described? Particular attention was given to the issues of (1) oral and scribal factors, (2) narratological and intertextual approaches, (3) reconstruction and redaction criticism, (4) ethos and Torah, (5) Q and the Gospel of Matthew, (6) Q and the Gospel of John and (7) new approaches to the Q hypothesis and the Synoptic Problem. Contributors include G.B. Bazzana, R.A. Derrenbacker, Jr., D. Dormeyer, H.T. Fleddermann, P. Foster, M. Frenschkowski, P.J. Judge, S.R. Johnson, J.S. Kloppenborg, M. Labahn, D.R. MacDonald, D.T. 1 in stock

    7 in stock

Book SynopsisIn Jerusalem of the early second century, a Jewish teacher, later widely, and simply, known as Ben Sira, wrote, in contemporary Hebrew, a collection of proverbs designed to advise his co-religionists how to express and maintain their Jewishness and values in the face of a dominant Hellenistic culture. His proverbs were later translated into Greek by his grandson. Because the early Church, but not Rabbinic Judaism, included the book in its scriptural canon, the original Hebrew gradually gave way to the Greek, Latin and Syriac versions and was virtually lost in the late medieval and early modern periods. The late nineteenth-century discoveries from the Cairo Genizah restored Hebrew versions of much of the book. Academic use of Ben Sira’s work is now greatly facilitated by this scientific polyglot of all four versions, originally planned and initiated by Friedrich V. Reiterer at the University of Salzburg, and now brought to fruition by the painstaking scholarly efforts of Renate Egger-Wenzel, who has also provided a text edition of the Hebrew manuscripts and a guide to the project and to the volume.

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisBased on many years of research spent examining a wide range of Persian, Punjabi and English sources alongside genealogical records, oral traditions and a thorough battlefield study, this work tends to eschew hagiography to ground all research on this spiritual-cum-military leader whose life story interweaves through the turbulence of 18th-century Punjab, often referred to as the heroic century . The author successfully brings alive the life and times of Deep Singh as the quintessential sant-sipahi (warrior-saint), the unofficial patron-saint of Courage and Resolve, and a rare embodiment of the Khalsa ideology as he seeks to faithfully answer several questions. Why has the Deep Singh narrative acquired such epic proportions to grip generation after generation? Often portrayed in prints with his head in one hand and a broadsword in the other, is he more myth than reality? In the process of collation, analysis, and synthesis, the dialectic filtering of information through the prism of logic and probability has been an essential adjunct for the author, especially while trying to boldly separate myth from certitude for several contentious issues, including Deep Singh''s last battle fought in November 1757 near Amritsar. This account promises to be the more memorable for its stylistic panache and equally for the generous representation of vaars in the original Gurmukhi script alongside their English transcreation in rousing rhyme.

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisJi Xianlin: A Critical Biography reconstructs the academic, professional and personal journey of the doyen of Indology, Buddhism and Orientalism in China. Though his On a Long Journey of life remains full of trials and tribulations, and an emotional world buried deep under the familial and professional obligations, nonetheless, true to the evaluation, he remains indispensable as far as China’s translation, comparative literature, Dunhuang-Turfan studies and cultural exchanges are concerned. India runs through his veins throughout this journey, whether it is his path breaking textual research on the dissemination of paper and silk from China to India or the sugar from India to China, or the Indian Literature in China and translation of Ramayana, Panchtantra, Shanakuntla etc. from Sanskrit, or the reminiscences of his visits to India, one and all have been supplemented with credible primary sources from historical records. It is not easy to weave a tapestry of the life and works of a person as versatile as Ji Xianlin, but the authors have done a remarkable job in mirroring Ji Xianlin’s journey through the Qing, Republican and the People’s Republic. I believe this tapestry will be woven uninterrupted, for Ji Xianlin remains a link between the past and the future.

Book SynopsisGod’s diplomat, the pope of the ecumenical movement, but also an acerbic theologian and a difficult person: this is how journalists characterised Willem Adolf Visser ’t Hooft (1900-1985). He was one of the best-known Dutch theologians outside the Netherlands and he left his mark on the world church. Even at an early age, he made profound efforts in support of international ecumenical youth and student organisations (Dutch Student Christian Movement, YMCA and World Student Christian Federation). He led the World Council of Churches during its formative stages (from 1938), and after its formal establishment in 1948 became its first general secretary, serving until 1966. To Visser ’t Hooft, the unity of the church was both an article of faith and a pragmatic organisation of church influence in a disunited world.Trade Review"La biographie de Zeilstra sur le premier secrétaire général du COÉ est un apport important aux ressources pour l’étude de l’histoire de l’Église du XXe siècle et du mouvement oecuménique : avec un index détaillé des noms et des sujets et de nom-breuses références, ce livre s’avérera inestimable pour les futurs chercheurs."- Stephen Brown, ISTINA LXVI (2021) "Zeilstra has written an impressive study that provides profound insights into the efforts of one man, and through him of a movement, trying in one of the most momentous historical eras to forge church unity. For both it was the means of creating a more humane, just and peaceful world.
