Chicago Review Press The Seminarian: Martin Luther King Jr. Comes of

Book Synopsis2018 and 2019 Washington State Book Award Finalist (Biography/Memoir) • Excerpted in The Atlantic and Politico • TIME Magazine – One of 6 Books to Read in Honor of the 50th Anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr.'s Death Martin Luther King Jr. was a cautious nineteen-year-old rookie preacher when he left Atlanta, Georgia, to attend divinity school up north. At Crozer Theological Seminary, King, or “ML” back then, immediately found himself surrounded by a white staff and white professors. Even his dorm room had once been used by wounded Confederate soldiers during the Civil War. In addition, his fellow seminarians were almost all older; some were soldiers who had fought in World War II, others pacifists who had chosen jail instead of enlisting. ML was facing challenges he’d barely dreamed of. A prankster and a late-night, chain-smoking pool player, ML soon fell in love with a white woman, all the while adjusting to life in an integrated student body and facing discrimination from locals in the surrounding town of Chester, Pennsylvania. In class, ML performed well, though he demonstrated a habit of plagiarizing that continued throughout his academic career. But he was helped by friendships with fellow seminarians and the mentorship of the Reverend J. Pius Barbour. In his three years at Crozer between 1948 and 1951, King delivered dozens of sermons around the Philadelphia area, had a gun pointed at him (twice), played on the basketball team, and eventually became student body president. These experiences shaped him into a man ready to take on even greater challenges. Based on dozens of revealing interviews with the men and women who knew him then,The Seminarian is the first definitive, full-length account of King’s years as a divinity student at Crozer Theological Seminary. Long passed over by biographers and historians, this period in King’s life is vital to understanding the historical figure he soon became.

Book SynopsisWar hero, Medal of Honor recipient, and subject of an Oscar-winning film, Sgt. Alvin York was the most famous soldier of his generation. But behind the honors and publicity was an uncompromising Christian patriot who suffered when his ideals were challenged by shifting views of faith, patriotism, and moral relativism. Untouched by German gunfire, York faced destruction from disease, disrespect, and the IRS. Sgt. York: His Life, Legend, and Legacy reveals the whole story of this great American figure based on original battlefield eyewitness reports, Hollywood archives, and interviews with York’s family and friends. This new edition includes a message from York’s ninety-year-old son, Andrew Jackson York.Trade Review''The greatest civilian soldier of the War.'' General John J. Pershing , describing Sergeant Alvin York, who later received the Congressional Medal of Honor, Prauthoy, France, 1919"What you did was the greatest thing accomplished by any private soldier of all the armies of Europe.'' Marshal Ferdinand Foch, Supreme Allied Commander in World War I, upon awarding Sergeant York the Croix de Guerre with Palm, St. Sliva, France, 1919''When I die, I had rather it be said about me that I gave my life toward aiding my fellow man than for it to be said that I became a millionaire through capitalizing on my fame as a fighter. Sergeant York, speaking before the First Presbyterian Men's Club, Nashville, Tennessee, 1926"This exemplar of the American fighting man died in 1964, all but forgotten.'' • Christian Focus Publications Ltd Theodore Beza: The Man and the Myth

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisTheodore Beza? Who is he? Why should I care about him?Well, I'm glad you asked!Theodore Beza was a man who in his day was one of the luminaries of the Protestant world, who took the reins of the beleaguered Calvinistic movement after its namesake's death, and who influenced English-speaking Protestantism more than you might imagine. Shawn D. Wright casts light on a figure often neglected and helps illustrate the significant impact of his faith and influence. Trade ReviewAn enrichingand heart warming experience ... Alec Motyer is a Hebrew scholar with a love and respect for God's Word, we can have confidence in what he has done. There were wonderful moments where the Psalms came alive. -- Evangelical NowFor a man who was John Calvin's assistant and successor, Theodore Beza is surprisingly little known. This book does us the great service of introducing the man in and through his major works. -- Gerald Bray (Research Professor, Beeson Divinity School at Samford University, Birmingham, Alabama)Among the litany of books on Beza this latest work offers a most genuine contribution in its ability to countervail the many modern misconceptions surrounding "the Calvinist." From the aftermath of the St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre to the Colloquy of Montbeliard, Beza proved himself to be more than a theologian; he was a statesman and an ambassador for the Reformed faith. Theodore Beza: The Man and the Myth is a robust depiction of Beza in all of these roles. -- Obbie Tyler Todd, New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary, New Orleans, Louisiana - Writing for The Gospel CoalitionThis title opens with, 'Theodore Beza? Who's he? Why should I care about him?' The author answers these questions with warmth and clarity ... though Beza was a theologian of great intellect, he was a man of great devotion to God and pastoral sensitivity in dealing with God's people.Overall, an excellent introduction to the life and writings of Theodore Beza. -- Mark Rowcroft, Evangelical TimesShawn Wright is a rare gift of a careful historian with a pastor's heart. In this moving tribute on Beza, Wright captures the true man behind the myth and demonstrates why Beza should be both relevant as well as inspiring to the modern pastor. -- Brian Croft (Pastor, Auburndale Baptist Church, Louisville, Kentucky and Founder, Practical Shepherding)Well researched and well written, this is an important book about Beza based on a close reading of Beza ... A stellar contribution to Reformation studies and pastoral theology alike. -- Timothy George (Founding Dean of Beeson Divinity School, Samford University, Birmingham, Alabama)Wright's own instincts of pastoral sympathy help clear away much of the historiographical garbage that has accumulated around the legacy of Beza and made him a feared step-child of the Reformation. -- Tom Nettles (Senior Professor of Historical Theology, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Louisville, Kentucky)

Book SynopsisGeorge Whitefield, regarded as the preaching wonder of his day, and John Newton, one of the leading spiritual guides of the movement that Whitefield had a significant hand in creating, Evangelicalism, are perennially interesting figures. These lives, intertwined as this study of a portion of those lives reveals, speak across the centuries to our day. These two marvelous characters have much to teach contemporary Christians. A great read for both the professional historian and the thoughtful Christian.Trade ReviewGeorge Whitefield and John Newton were two of the titans of eighteenth-century British evangelicalism. But for too long, the precise nature of their mutual influence has remained unclear. Grant Gordon's much-needed book rectifies that problem with its treasure trove of illuminating research. -- Thomas S. Kidd (Distinguished Professor of History, Baylor University, and author of George Whitefield: America?s Spiritual Founding Father )... gave me fresh insights into the ministries of those special men, and a fresh appreciation for the grace of God that enabled them. • Luther And His Katie: The Influence of Luther's

Christian Focus Publications Ltd Luther And His Katie: The Influence of Luther's

Book SynopsisFew of us have heard of Catherine von Bora. And yet, as the beloved wife of Martin Luther, she can very justifiably be seen as one of the most influential figures in the Reformation. She made her home a haven of rest for the storm tossed man that was her husband. Luther once said, 'Next to God's Word, the world has no more precious treasure than holy matrimony. God's best gift is a pious, cheerful, God-fearing wife, with whom you may live peacefully, to whom you may entrust your goods, your body, and your life.'Trade ReviewThis is the first time that I have delved into any Luther literature and I was not disappointed. Luther was greatly blessed by the partnership he enjoyed with Katie. One is left wondering if Luther would have achieved all that he did without the help of his Katie. This is an interesting read but tinged with sadness. I would highly recommend it to those wishing to understand the man Martin Luther and what made him who he was. -- Presbyterian HeraldIn this valuable little book we are given a brief account of the life of Martin Luther. In addition, we have the fascinating story of his wife, 'my lord Katie'. Not only did Luther love his Katie dearly, he relied on her advice and companionship throughout his turbulent life. Packed into this record, we have insights into Luther's character: his boldness, his depressions, his family life and, most of all, his devotion to Katie. We learn of the joys and sorrows of their lives and of Katie's intelligent interest in all the theological arguments of the day. Read Luther and his Katie and it will give you a grasp of the life and influence of the great Reformer, and may well lead you on to more detailed books on Luther's enormous contribution to the church in this special year. -- Faith Cook, Evangelical Times

  • You’ll Go to London: The Autobiography of Lionel

Christian Focus Publications Ltd You’ll Go to London: The Autobiography of Lionel

Book SynopsisLionel Ball served as a London City Missionary most of his working life. A whole generation of London City Missionaries are grateful to God for the encouragement given to them by him. Even today, some years after his retirement, missionaries regularly meet people who ask, ‘Do you remember Lionel Ball?’ Through his chaplaincy with the police, he was so highly regarded that he was appointed a Freeman of the City of London. This meant that he could drive sheep across London Bridge without paying. There is no record of him ever taking advantage of the privilege. Instead Lionel was to undertake a different sort of shepherding! The key place he worked was at the Covent Garden Mission but Lionel was also involved in mission activity in the London theatres. Blessed with a fine voice, and himself a gifted pianist, he related well to performers and won their confidence and love. There are many who can trace their early Christian influence back to Lionel Ball.Trade Review"Lionel Ball worked as London City Missionary for much of his life. Born just before the second world war, he tells his story in detail - his schooldays, his life in the RAF, his conversion to Christ, his work with the police and his entrance into the London city Mission. He details his years based with in the covenant Garden Mission and also with people from the London theatres. Wherever he was and whomever he mixed with, his main aim was to bring men to Christ and this is amply shown on every page of his book." -- CLC World"As you read some of Lionel's descriptions of the things he has seen and the ways in which God has used him, Joan and his family, if you find yourself quietly praising God and, like me, gently wiping a tear from your eye, then I feel sure that Lionel will think that all his hard work in writing this book has been worthwhile. Praise God!" -- Rt. Rev’d Prebendary Sandy Millar"This is an encouraging book to read and reflect on. Many Christian workers face the awesome challenge of evangelising London, and to read this autobiography is to be refreshed and reminded of what God can do by sacrificial and committed service undertaken in his name." -- Evangelicals Now"Lionel is a people person, a tremendous encourager, and a man with a passion to spread the gospel. A whole generation of London City Missionaries are grateful to God for the encouragement given to them by him. Even today, some years after his retirement, missionaries regularly meet people who ask, ‘Do you remember Lionel Ball?' In this book Lionel tells his own story. It is beautifully written and a delight to read." -- Irene Howat (Award–winning author)"Lionel Ball was a London City Missonary (LCM) for over thirty years, and this charming and heart warming narrative tells us his story from birth on the ‘right side' of the welsh border, which of course gave him a life-long love for music and singing, to service in the RAF and then into the LCM." -- The Evangelical Movement of Wales (Published by Evangelical Movement of Wales)"..a lively account of work among the spiritually needy of London" -- The Gospel Magazine

Book SynopsisAn engaging and rich exploration of Saint Patrick and his extraordinary influence on the world. Forced into slavery at the age of fifteen, Patrick overcame all hardship to fulfil his calling: to bring the people of Ireland into the light of God's word. He carried out his mission of conversion and care at a crucial time of change, as Christianity spread across Romanised Europe and harnessed existing social structures and belief systems in Pagan Ireland. Patrick met high kings and mythical heroes, Celtic gods and goddesses, lowly farmers and loyal servants, and he left lasting marks upon the Irish landscape and way of life. He was humble, courageous and resourceful, and was the first of Ireland's saints to write down his experiences. Thus began the cult of Saint Patrick, galvanised over 1500 years of devotion and scholarship, and culminating recently in the cheerful 'greening' of the world's most famous landmarks. Drawing from recorded histories, 'tall tales' from all four provinces and beautiful illustrations, this is a light-hearted look at the global phenomenon of Saint Patrick, his life and his legacy, the facts and the fiction of his incredible journey from slave to international saint.Trade Reviewcrammed with fascinating insights -- Irish Daily Maila lovely book -- KCLR LiveTable of ContentsIntroduction page 09 Patrick Q&A 13 PART ONE: Ireland in Patrick’s Time 21 PART TWO: Patrick’s Story 77 PART THREE: Tall Tales from the Four Provinces 101 Northern Light: Stories from Ulster 104 Ends of the Earth: Stories from Connacht 122 Valley of the Kings: Stories from Leinster 141 From Myths to Monks: Stories from Munster 150 PART FOUR: The Greening of the World 163 Select Bibliography 195 Illustrations 200 Index of Place Names 201

Book SynopsisAt the beginning of the 21st century women and men find themselves in a world which seems to be 'post' everything - post-Christian, post-modern, post-evangelical and even post-feminist.How should Christians react? Is it possible to find belief in the middle of all the topsy turvy values? The Bible tells us of a secular society in which the concept of God as we know it was unknown. Esther and Mordecai lived, loved, had faith and took courage in a godless secular empire. We find a feminist icon, Queen Vashti, who stood up to a male dominated regime to the extent that a law had to be passed against her for fear that other women would do the same.Esther, by comparison, is a post-feminist icon. She did not fight the patriarchal system or attempt to win rights for women. Instead she worked within a corrupt and debauched society by personal influence - never losing her vision of God or a sense of humility. The challenge of this book is that you might prefer Vashti to Esther, the challenge of the Christian faith is that God's ways are not necessarily our ways.Includes bible study questions to help group study in a fresh and challenging way.Trade Review"...this is a practical and informative study guide. It provides many points for personal consideration or group discussion on the ways in which believers can live for God without submitting to social pressure or cultural forces." -- Elinor Johnston, The Covenanter Witness (Magazine of the Reformed Presbyterian Churches of Scotland and Ireland)... both refreshing and challenging. One of the most celebrated people of his era, Thomas Carlyle, said that Knox was ?The one Scotchman to whom of all others his country and the world owe a debt.' If you understand Knox - then you understand Scotland. Over 200 years after his death, when news reached Britain of the American Declaration of Independence, the Prime Minister of the day declared that ?America has run off with a Scottish Parson'. Knox's influence had spread far outside of Scotland during his life, but even more so after his death. Read about this most famous of Scots in a lively, flowing biography that tells you what motivated a great man of history to form a nation. Trade ReviewThere is not a dull page in the book from first to last. -- The Free Church Monthly Record (Magazine of the Free Church of Scotland)If you have never heard of John Knox then the reprint of The Plain Mr Knox will inform and challenge you. This fascinating biography will bring enlightenment to many and open up an era of history in the church of the Lord Jesus Christ in Scotland that will cause you to long that the Lord will raise up a new "Plain Mr. Somebody" in our generation. -- Evangelical Magazine of Wales

Book SynopsisMay Nicholson was a notorious fighting drunk in Ferguslie Park, Paisley until her conversion when she was 34. The last 22 years have been spend tirelessly working for the Lord as an outreach worker in Ferguslie Park, Church of Scotland Project Worker in Mid Craigie (a deprived area of Dundee) and now in Govan where she founded the Preshal (Gaelic for precious) Trust.May's biography reads as though she is telling her story and is interspersed by accounts and comments from other people. Her story is so incredible that it needs other people to verify what she says; one of May's doctors, a minister, those who come to the Preshal Trust and The Duchess of Montrose all help to tell this compelling story.Trade ReviewMay has the same love for the poorest of the poor and the richest of the rich. She is at home with lords and ladies and with the lowly and loneliest. Living out God's love with and among the poor, she reflects Jesus who, "though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor that we might be made rich".' -- Chuck WrightThe key to May's amazing ministry is in her prayer after conversion: "I'd like to have millions and millions of Jesus' love so that wherever I go it would spill out on the people I meet". I have seen this love spill out on drug addicts and duchesses, politicians and prisoners in Dundee, Paisley, Northern Ireland and Romania. I can't wait to see what May does next!' -- Louise S Purvis'Anyone who has lived with drug addicts and alcoholics knows how elusive hope is....This is the sort of story that could be labelled "unbelievable", except that it happens to be true! It's told honestly, with helpful angles from those whose lives interacted with May, and with an ever-present sympathy and understanding for all. Read it; study it in your churches to see what you can do; and give it to anyone who needs hope.' -- John Nicholls, London City Mission (Associate Minister, Smithton Free Church of Scotland, Inverness, formerly Chief Executive, London City Mission)... a challenging and encouraging book, reminding us that God can save people whom the world dismisses. -- Peace and Truth‘Her story is an eloquent testimony to the saving and transforming power of Christ.' -- Janet P North ‘British Church Newspaper (November 2004)

Book SynopsisHeaven Come Down is the stunningly powerful testimony of someone growing up with severe dysmorphia and gender dysphoria, in a broken dysfunctional family, and their discovery of hope, love and faith through the healing power of God. Chrissie Chevasutt’s tumultuous journey has taken her through drug addiction, prostitution, and begging on the streets of India, before being led to the feet of Jesus. It is a story of hope for anyone who has or is suffering from addictions, suicidal ideation, homelessness, mental illness and the crisis of sexual or gender identity conflict, and seeks to build bridges in places where the Church and the transgender community have been divided.Trade Review'Chrissie’s book is powerful, uncomfortable but essential reading as the Church seeks to understand the trauma of gender dysphoria and welcome transgender persons.' -- Simon Ponsonby‘Exhilarating and dangerous, like her cycle races, Chrissie’s searingly honest, Jesus-centred emergence as a transgender disciple challenges and heartens. It’s one heck of a ride!’ -- Revd Dr Christina Beardsley‘More beauty, more truth, and more pain than have ever been found under one cover.
