  • Marcia Williams: The Life and Times of Baroness

Biteback Publishing Marcia Williams: The Life and Times of Baroness

Book SynopsisOver a decade before Margaret Thatcher swept to power, another woman was running Britain from 10 Downing Street: Marcia Williams was the first ever female political adviser to a Prime Minister and was said to have a powerful grip on her boss. Historians have described the relationship between Marcia and Labour Prime Minister Harold Wilson as one of the most famous but mysterious partnerships in modern political history. A brilliant tactician, Marcia masterminded Wilson's multiple election victories. Indeed, he said that but for her ingenuity, he would never have become Prime Minister. But misogyny, jealousy, a shocking private life and accusations of money-grubbing and bribery all contributed to her reputation as a public nuisance. Marcia's young and ambitious male colleagues said she humiliated and screamed at Wilson, single-handedly ruining his chances of being remembered as a 'great' Prime Minister. There is no doubt Marcia was outspoken, forthright and, by contemporary standards, deeply unconventional. But her critics failed to understand her unbreakable partnership with Wilson - they were politically wedded to each other and equal contributors to his success. In this passionate and fascinating biography, Linda McDougall seeks to rescue Marcia from previously dismissive verdicts, suggesting a more nuanced context in which to assess her actions and reactions and restoring this trailblazing pioneer to her rightful place in British political history.

  • Germs : A Memoir of Childhood

The New York Review of Books, Inc Germs : A Memoir of Childhood

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisA brilliant, sinuous exploration of family and childhood memory by one of the most original British philosophers of the twentieth century.Germs is about first things, the seeds from which a life grows, as well as about the illnesses it incurs, the damage it sustains. Written at the end of his life by Richard Wollheim, one of the major philosophers of the late twentieth century, the book is not the usual story of growing up and getting on but a brilliant recovery and evocation of childhood consciousness and unconsciousness, an eerily precise rendering of that primitive, formative world we all come from in which we do not know either the world or ourselves for sure, and things—houses, clothes, meals, parents—loom large around us, as indispensable as they are out of our control. Richard Wollheim’s remarkably original memoir is a disturbing, enthralling, dispassionate but also deeply personal depiction of a child standing, fascinated and fearful, on the threshold of individual life.

Book SynopsisBased on the provocative film documentary of the same name, The Third Dive investigates the shocking death of a world-renowned conservation activist. When experienced diver and award-winning filmmaker Rob Stewart (Sharkwater and Sharkwater: Extinction) drowned while diving off the coast of the Florida Keys in 2017, it was a shock to the world's environmental movement.Reports suggested that Stewart was encouraged to perform a dangerous and ultimately fatal dive by a reckless Svengali-like instructor named Peter Sotis. Some bloggers went so far as to report that Sotis survived the dive by clawing his way onto the boat first, leaving Stewart to drown.A civil case was launched which directed blame at Horizon Divers, the company that had taken Stewart out on the dive. The allegation was that they had not done their jobs properly and left him to die in the water.Through interviews and investigative reporting, The Third Dive is a compelling read that attempts to uncover the mysterious and disturbing circumstances surrounding Rob Stewart's untimely death.

  • Red Knight: The Unauthorised Biography of Sir

Biteback Publishing Red Knight: The Unauthorised Biography of Sir

Book SynopsisSir Keir Starmer has played many parts during his life and career. He went from schoolboy socialist to radical lawyer before surprising many by joining the establishment, becoming Director of Public Prosecutions, accepting a knighthood and then, in 2015, standing successfully for Parliament. At Westminster, he was swiftly elevated to the shadow Cabinet, and in April 2020 he became the leader of the Labour Party. Michael Ashcroft's new book goes in search of the man who wants to be Prime Minister and reveals previously unknown details about him which help to explain what makes him tick. Starmer was the architect of Labour's second-referendum Brexit policy, which was considered a major factor in its worst electoral defeat for nearly a century. Is he the man to bring back Labour's lost voters? Is he the voice of competence and moderation who can put his party back on the political map? Or is he just a member of the metropolitan elite who is prepared to say and do whatever it takes to win favour? This meticulous examination of his life offers voters the chance to answer these vital questions.Trade Review‘Red Knight is well written and researched and, I think, pretty fair.’ - Daniel Finkelstein, The Times

    3 in stock

Book Synopsis"In 2007, I underwent a crisis of sexual identity. I was married, with two young children, when I became attracted to another woman. The hostility I encountered at the Anglican church I was attending made me curious about other people''s experiences. It seemed to me imperative that stories of being gay in the Church be heard, especially in the context of the current maelstrom within the Anglican community in which the Church has been encouraged to undergo a ''listening process''. This book is the result." Outspoken presents the narratives of eleven people who have come out in the Anglican Church in New Zealand, including two ordained church members. The author has written a general introduction, plus an introduction to each individual story and reflections on it. The book closes with a postscript that discusses truth and the Church; community, belonging and rejection; ideas about hell and damnation; the theology of denial; and the implications and ramifications of the "Don''t ask, don''t tell" approach. The author notes that "People''s lives are sacred ground and the area of sexuality is one where people are arguably at their most vulnerable." She hopes that this research will contribute to community building within the Anglican Church.

Heritage House Publishing Co Ltd A Chosen Path: From Moccasin Flats to Parliament

    3 in stock

Book SynopsisIn A Chosen Path, Frank Oberle continues the amazing story of his remarkable rise from self-educated immigrant to national politician and Cabinet minister. The bestselling first volume of Frank''s autobiography, Finding Home, recounted his turbulent youth in Nazi-run Germany and his post-war immigration to Canada. After working for a year and a half--as a baker, logger and miner--he earned enough to bring his future wife, Joan, from their homeland. They eventually settled in the brand-new community of Chetwynd, BC, where he began his political life as a village councillor and later became mayor. In A Chosen Path, we travel with Frank to Ottawa after his election to the House of Commons in 1972 and follow his six-term political career, which culminated in his appointment to Cabinet in 1985--first as Minister of State for Science and Technology, then four years later as Minister of Forestry. On the way, we are treated to incisive, often witty, behind-the-scenes looks at the politicians and issues of the day, along with Frank''s straight-shooting assessments of our national leaders and the prime minister''s office. Now a thoughtful observer more than a decade removed from that maelstrom of machinations that is Canada''s capital, Frank sheds light on what is right and what is wrong in our political world.

Caitlin Press Old Lives: In the Chilcotin Backcountry

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisSet in the wild country north of Lillooet and west of the great Fraser River, "Old Lives" paints the rugged landscape and equally rugged lives of the Chilcotin''s enigmatic old-timers: aboriginal and settler, male and female, deceased and alive. It takes vigilance, persistence, courage and humour to live where survival requires a deep knowledge and trust of the land, where prosperity is synonymous with self-sufficiency and where thriving is dependent upon a community of neighbours and friends who can be counted on in the direst of times. In his second collection of Chilcotin stories, John Schreiber unveils an urban life that continues to encroach upon the BC Interior, and as it does, the old ways disappear; traditional knowledge and skills are forgotten, and the legends fade into myth. This is a book that acknowledges and honours the region''s backcountry elders, their way of life and the wild liveliness of the great Chilcotin land where they have existed for centuries.

Brindle and Glass Publishing, Ltd I Am Full Moon: Stories of a Ninth Daughter

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisIn this lyrical memoir, Lily Hoy Price writes with moving detail about her childhood and adolescence in a large Chinese Canadian family in the Cariboo country of northern British Columbia. The ninth daughter in a family of 12 children, Lily is an observant child who tucks away every image of life in rugged Quesnel during the 1930s for one unforgettable tale after another. She has carefully selected many of her father''s early photographs to illustrate her stories. The celebrated pioneer photographer Chow Dong Hoy left a legacy of more the 1,500 photographs taken after 1909, and created an invaluable record of the cultural diversity of the Cariboo region. With similar sensitivity and the same eye for detail, Lily Hoy Price seamlessly weaves both the innocence and expectations of a young child and the struggles of her parents, who came to Canada during the racially charged days of the imposed $100 head tax. Filled with love, confusion, family celebrations and family tragedies, these stories open a window on an era long past. Rich with the author''s own insight, the stories are at times sad and humourous, but always thoughtful and interesting. I Am Full Moon creates an intimate portrait of life in an unusual, gifted family and is a significant addition to the historical literature of British Columbia.

Book SynopsisDr Helton Godwin Baynes was C.G. Jung''s medical assistant in Zurich, becoming the eminent psychiatrist''s close friend and confidante. Baynes introduced Jungian psychology to Britain and led the English Jungian community for twenty years. He started the Jungian Analytical Psychology Club in London (APC) and laid the foundations for a Jungian Medical Society with the three aims of providing therapy, education and research. Baynes was the author of the first two major Jungian books to be written in English: Mythology of the Soul and Germany Possessed, and together with his second wife, Cary, he translated all of Jung''s earlier writings into English. He arranged for Jung to visit England to lecture at the Tavistock Clinic, at the AP Club, to the medical students at Barts Hospital, and at Oxford University. Baynes brought a greater psychological awareness to war-time Britain in his lectures throughout the UK and his religious broadcasts with Archbishop Temple. He was a giant personality. At Cambridge he read medicine; he rowed twice in the boat race and was an outstanding singer. He counted among his friends many of the leading writers, poets, musicians and thinkers of his day. He was a central figure in the avant-garde circles surrounding Rupert Brooke and Arnold Bax. Included in this fascinating account of a charismatic and larger than life personality, there is previously unpublished material from Baynes'' journals relating to his analysis with Jung as well as previously unpublished correspondence between Baynes and Jung. In the words of the composer Arnold Bax, Baynes was ''the most all-round man of his generation''.
