Book SynopsisA murder, a tryst, a mysterious child. A Victoria aristocrat who obsesses over her Churchill relatives. A repressive Welsh mother with a royalty fixation. A once-carefree Hesquiat girl from Nootka Sound. A dashing Icelandic philanderer. And quiet, steady Julia Godolphin, trying to rise above it all. The lost novel of Norma Macmillan, the Vancouver actress who lived much of her life in New York and Hollywood, is the work of a woman steeped in the American entertainment industry but deeply in love with the history of her native province, which eventually drew her home before her death in 2001. The Maquinna Line: A Family Saga is set on Vancouver Island from 1871 to 1945, with a nod to the meeting of Captain Cook and Chief Maquinna in 1778. It traces the stories of the five families of varied social standing, including two descendents of Chief Maquinna. In the end, they''re all ordinary people trying to find happiness in the face of intrigue, ambition, misunderstanding and changing social and sexual mores.

Book SynopsisWalter B. Cheadle''s diary tells his incredible story of travelling with Lord Milton, as they journeyed along the uncharted Yellowhead route in 1862-63. A miraculously successful expedition, the men traversed the continent, making their way from Quebec, through Saskatchewan, Alberta, up the Athabasca River, risking their lives opening the trails through the Canadian Rockies, and eventually arriving in Victoria, British Columbia, in 1863. Cheadle''s candid and gritty but also humorous account tells, in intimate detail, what life and travel was like in the Northwest and BC during the latter days of the fur-trade era. He acknowledges the heavy debt owed by all the early explorers to the Plains Indians, who passed on to the first white men their sophistication in the ways of the wilderness. He also records the gradual demoralization of the Native people under the impact of European culture. A welcome addition to the Classics West series, Cheadle''s Journal is a rare and important document of a remarkable life and time.

Book SynopsisDo you think the smuggling of drugs and people is a new phenomenon in Canada''s west? Think again! Between the mid-19th and mid-20th centuries, many daring smugglers carried contraband goods and people into western Canada across the US-Canada border or into BC from Asia. Smugglers of the West tells the dramatic tales of the bold criminals who smuggled Chinese immigrants, opium, liquor and a host of commodities ranging from wool to live animals to tobacco. Among them are Boss Harris, the shadowy kingpin whose opium-smuggling empire stretched from Victoria across North America, and King of the Smugglers Larry Kelly, who reputedly tied illegal Chinese immigrants to pig iron so they could be tossed overboard if American patrollers got too close. Rosemary Neering takes readers into a shadowy world where no item was too small and no risk too large for the men and women who carried goods and people clandestinely across the border.

Great Plains Publications Ltd Stories Best Left Untold: Tales from a Manitoba

Book SynopsisGord Mackintosh was not your typical politician and this book is not your typical political memoir. Mackintosh steps out of his familiar role as the Manitoba NDP’s go-to guy, foot soldier and law reformer to provide a unique take on the quirky places and people behind his long and varied career. From secret passages, archaisms, and funny business at Manitoba’s Legislature, to door-knocking surprises, crime-fighting and “saving Mother Earth,” Mackintosh weaves warm-hearted anecdotes of his many years in public life. Hooey, hijinks, and embarrassment that humanize our political system are interspersed with major political events of the last thirty years, for which he had suspiciously differing roles. Whether Manitoba’s French Language Crisis, the Meech Lake Crisis, the MTS Debate, the Flood of the Century, the Auto Theft Capital of North America, or the internal rebellion against Premier Greg Selinger, he still urges, “It wasn’t me.” Calling it “more sunshine sketches than social science”, Mackintosh exposes what it’s really like in politics, with seasoned political advice, strong opinion -- including an “unbiased view” of opponents, and a celebration of leadership. He also offers a self-deprecating backstory to many government decisions—required reading for Manitoba citizens of any political stripe.

    Simon & Schuster Rage

Book SynopsisBob Woodward’s new book, Rage, is an unprecedented and intimate tour de force of new reporting on the Trump presidency facing a global pandemic, economic disaster and racial unrest.Woodward, the #1 international bestselling author of Fear: Trump in the White House, has uncovered the precise moment the president was warned that the Covid-19 epidemic would be the biggest national security threat to his presidency. In dramatic detail, Woodward takes readers into the Oval Office as Trump’s head pops up when he is told in January 2020 that the pandemic could reach the scale of the 1918 Spanish Flu that killed 675,000 Americans. In 17 on-the-record interviews with Woodward over seven volatile months—an utterly vivid window into Trump’s mind—the president provides a self-portrait that is part denial and part combative interchange mixed with surprising moments of doubt as he glimpses the perils in the presidency and what he calls the “dynamite behind every door.” At key decision points, Rage shows how Trump’s responses to the crises of 2020 were rooted in the instincts, habits and style he developed during his first three years as president. Revisiting the earliest days of the Trump presidency, Rage reveals how Secretary of Defense James Mattis, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats struggled to keep the country safe as the president dismantled any semblance of collegial national security decision making. Rage draws from hundreds of hours of interviews with firsthand witnesses as well as participants’ notes, emails, diaries, calendars and confidential documents. Woodward obtained 25 never-seen personal letters exchanged between Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, who describes the bond between the two leaders as out of a “fantasy film.” Trump insists to Woodward he will triumph over Covid-19 and the economic calamity. “Don’t worry about it, Bob. Okay?” Trump told the author in July. “Don’t worry about it. We’ll get to do another book. You’ll find I was right.”

  • Camera Girl: The Coming of Age of Jackie Bouvier

Simon & Schuster Camera Girl: The Coming of Age of Jackie Bouvier

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisAn illuminating new biography of the young Jackie Bouvier Kennedy that covers her formative adventures abroad in Paris; her life as a writer and photographer at a Washington, DC, newspaper; and her romance with a dashing, charismatic Massachusetts congressman who shared her intellectual passion.Camera Girl brings to cinematic life Jackie’s years as a young, single woman trying to figure out who she wanted to become. Chafing at the expectations of her family and the societal limitations placed on women in that era, Jackie pursued her dream of becoming a writer. Set primarily during the years of 1949 to 1953, when Jackie was in her early twenties, the book recounts in heretofore unrevealed detail the story of her late college years and her early adulthood as a working woman. Before she met Jack Kennedy, Jacqueline Bouvier was the Washington Times-Herald’s “Inquiring Camera Girl,” posing compelling questions to members of the public on the streets of DC and snapping their photos with her unwieldy Graflex camera. She then fashioned the results into a daily column, of which six hundred were published. Carl Sferrazza Anthony, a historian and leading expert on First Ladies, draws on these columns and previously unseen archives of Jackie’s writings from this time, along with insights gleaned from interviews he conducted with the former First Lady’s friends, colleagues, and family members. Camera Girl offers a fresh perspective on the woman later known as Jacqueline Kennedy and Jackie O, introducing us to the headstrong, self-assured young woman who went on to be one of the world’s most famous people. It’s a glamorous and surprisingly hard-charging story of a person determined to define herself, told with admiration, empathy, and journalistic rigor.Trade Review“In Camera Girl, Carl Anthony slows down the story of Jacqueline Bouvier so that her complexity and wide range of interests can be grasped during the period of her life before marriage, political obligation, and tragedy—when she is forming a distinct sense of what role she hopes to someday play in the larger world. From designing her red ‘Bouvier cape,’ to her descriptive letters of new cultures and shrewd assessments of individuals, to her cartooning skills, to translating and analyzing French diplomatic and military texts about Indochina, we see Jackie in her fullness. For anyone of any age, the Jackie in Camera Girl offers an example of intentional living.” —Secretary Hillary Rodham Clinton, #1 New York Times bestselling author of What Happened “Carl Anthony has found a wholly refreshing way to look at one of the most gazed upon women in American history, while also revealing how essential Jackie Bouvier was to Jack Kennedy's intellectual and political development. Camera Girl is as delightful as it is insightful.” —David Maraniss, New York Times bestselling author of Barack Obama: The Story “In this charming portrait, Carl Anthony traces the genesis of Jacqueline Kennedy's mesmerizing personality. Behind her privileged upbringing, Jackie coped with a dysfunctional family and cultivated an independent spirit as well as a questing intellect. In Anthony's telling, her determination to make her way on her own terms foreshadowed her groundbreaking role as First Lady.” —Sally Bedell Smith, New York Times bestselling author of Grace and Power: The Private World of the Kennedy White House “A lively depiction of a young woman who relished every opportunity to regard the world from her own perspective.” —The New Yorker, Best Books of 2023 "Whether she’s avoiding a traffic ticket after speeding in her car named Zelda, or translating books for Kennedy’s report on the history of France in Indochina, this portrait of young Jackie Bouvier shines with wit and intelligence." —Library Journal, starred review “Camera Girl offers one of the most detailed, nuanced portraits of Jackie to date." —The Washington Post “A convincing and colorful reconsideration of a first lady known more for her style than her substance . . . [Anthony] sheds intriguing light on Jackie’s stint as a columnist for the Washington Times-Herald, the engagement she called off prior to marrying JFK, and her volatile and occasionally violent relationship with her mother.” —Publishers Weekly “The Jacqueline Bouvier whom Carl Anthony brings to life in these deeply researched pages is a revelation. She is defiant, curious, independent—and a rule-breaker determined to chart a course that would make history take notice.” —Karen Tumulty, author of The Triumph of Nancy Reagan “Anthony uncovers the root of Jackie’s distinctive blend of rebelliousness and vulnerability, independence and insecurity that would attract and confound supporters and critics alike. By drawing on extensive interviews with Jackie’s contemporaries and family, oral histories, and presidential archives, Anthony delivers a well-rounded depiction of this eternally fascinating, covertly complicated, and perennially misunderstood historical and cultural icon.” —Booklist “What shaped Jackie Kennedy Onassis to become one of the most influential women of the 20th century? In this lively, dishy account, author Carl Anthony traces four formative years when she was Jacqueline Bouvier, negotiating her way into adulthood with a determination and an independence that belied the reserved mien she showed to the world. ‘Become distinct,’ she told herself. And so she did.” —Susan Page, New York Times bestselling author of The Matriarch: Barbara Bush and the Making of an American Dynasty "Prior to her marriage to John F. Kennedy, Jacqueline Bouvier was an ambitious journalist and photographer, a remarkable period of her life captured in this engaging coming-of-age biography . . . Drawing on Bouvier’s letters and interviews, Anthony pulls together a compelling portrait of a young woman facing both the problems of her time and timeless issues. Should she focus on her career or getting married? How can she be respectful to her problematic parents while still declaring her own adult independence? A well-crafted biography that could easily spawn both a delightful TV drama or a historical look at female journalists." —Kirkus, starred review

He illustrates an American popular singer's significance as a political activist -- for her audiences and for her opponents as well as for those victims of politically organized violence who have profited from her work. Mingling popular culture with political activism can be a helpful means to achieve non-violent societal progress: Joan Baezs work offers an excellent example for this hypothesis. This French travelogue is based on Bernier's expedition to Mughal India. Much of this work covers the period of Mughal emperors Shah Jahan (r.1628-1658) and Aurangzeb (r.1658-1707). This volume is marked with various distinct themes, as Bernier writes this book with astute observation, critical inspection, and reflection on various things during his visit to India. The author compares it with the economy, society, polity, and other social aspects of contemporary Europe. He generally presents India in a pessimistic manner in terms of economic and social conditions. Book SynopsisI distinctly remember the afternoon of 22 May 2016 when the news on television flashed Dr Kiran Bedi appointed LG of Puducherry. As much as I was delighted that Kiranji, who had been my inspiration since childhood, was going to occupy such an important constitutional post, I had butterflies in my stomach. Butterflies because I had just received a confirmation from her to be at my college for an important event in September and now this posting! I wondered what would happen. Will she still honor the invitation? I sent her a congratulatory message and reminded her about the invitation. She replied saying, Will keep up my commitment with you. This was my first personal interaction with Kiranji or Maam as I refer to her now. I have been in awe of her work as LG and have been fortunate to be a part of her creative team and even work with her closely. She calls me her K-pedia and I call her my forever inspiration and my godmother. True to her leadership style, she redefined the role of the LG. She defined her purpose of being there to be on a mission to serve people and make Puducherry a Prosperous Puducherry . She has remained self-driven and has carved a special place for herself in the constitutional history of our country as an LG who refused to be a rubber stamp, but one who opened the gates of Rajivs to the common people and served them with utmost love and affection. Her kindness spoke through her work and won the hearts of the people. When it comes to kindness as a leadership trait, some people believe that this could be a weakness. But actually kindness strengthens leadership.

Book SynopsisIn this autobiography, the author narrates the story of his life as a police officer, starting from his childhood, to joining the coveted IPS, and finally to his retirement. As a refugee toddler from Pakistan, his early memories go back to living in a camp in Delhi (India) where his family had moved after the Partition of the subcontinent, until a small quarter was allotted to them. From there, this once mediocre student rose to become a three-star police chief in the elite Indian Police Service, after facing the toughest competition in the entrance examination for the civil services. The author tells the story of the police in India from a ringside view and also a bit about India''s history itself during the last 75 years, the evolution of the political class and the internal challenges that the country faces. How incidents, events and human beings shaped his life takes us on his journey as a police officer and a family man. He also talks of his service to the nation with humility, pride and honour. With its insights, this is surely a motivational book for the younger generation.
