Duke University Press Las hijas de Juan
Book SynopsisMexican American author Josie Méndez-Negrete's memoir of how she and her siblings and mother survived years of violence and sexual abuse at the hands of her father.Trade Review“Las hijas de Juan breaks new ground in the literature of Chicano/a autobiography by taking on the shameful issue of paternal incest at the same time that it demonstrates the process of healing through speaking, writing, and remembering. This book is the genuine song of the survivor, and the narrator’s personal story is also a political reality of the Chicano/a and Latino/a community, an ugly beast fed on silence that must be both contained and confronted. More than anything, Las hijas de Juan shows us the imperative need to speak the secrets that, unfortunately, bind and damage so many mujeres in our communities.”—Alicia Gaspar de Alba, Latino Studies“Las hijas de Juan is a searching and searingly honest portrayal of struggle, survival, and corage! This is a woman’s story that has lessons for the entire community.”—Louis Gerard Mendoza, author of Historia: The Literary Making of Chicana and Chicano History“To tell this story took an inordinate amount of courage; to have survived it makes me marvel at the power of the human spirit. As a reader, one feels deeply grateful for the privilege of being granted into its confidence. Josie Méndez-Negrete writes that the healing is not in the telling, but perhaps it resides in us, the listeners. May this story, then, travel far.”—Sandra Cisneros“Las Hijas de Juan is a tale of female triumph, justice and hope. . . . To its great merit this true story, written in the tone of a novel, exposes unflinchingly some of the tragic realities faced by many children worldwide who end up living as illegal immigrants and unaccounted for. It breaks the silence about incest within a poor Mexican-American family with such brutal candor that it has been hailed as a feminist survival story. By depicting the deep prejudices that persist in so many Mexican males, it candidly lays bare the cruelty and discrimination faced by their women, especially those who remain in limbo on both sides of the border picking up the pieces for their errant men.” -- Georgina Jiménez * Latin American Review of Books *Table of ContentsAbout the series xi Acknowledgments xiii Author's Note xv Prologue: Sin padre 1 México lindo y querido: Dearest and beloved Mexico 3 A donde iran los muertos? Fordham University Press The Lincoln Assassination Crime and Punishment
Book SynopsisThe assassination of President Abraham Lincoln remains one of the most prominent events in US history. In this book, the leading scholars of Lincoln and his murder offer their studies and arguments about the assassination, its aftermath, the extraordinary public reaction, and the iconography that Lincoln's murder and deification inspired.Trade Review"Unlike other scholars who couch assassin John Wilkes Booth's motivations in the politics of the time (his romanticization of the South and anguish at its perceived oppression), Holzer locates Booth's disenchantment within the bosom of the idiosyncratic, theatrical Booth clan." -- -Georgette Gouveia Westchester County Business Journal "Can there possibly be anything new to add to the millions of words already written about Abraham Lincoln's assassination and its aftermath? The answer is a resounding yes, and much of it is contained in this slim but enormously informative and thought-provoking volume. Exploring topics such as the identity of those who kept vigil at the President's deathbed, the joy that some Americans felt when they learned what Booth had done, and the character of the judge who presided over the conspirators' trial, this collection of essays offers welcome - and yes, new - insight into a tragedy whose history-shaping impact remains undiminished after 145 years." -- -Richard Moe, President National Trust for Historic Preservation "The nine essays in The Lincoln Assassination--all of them excellent--explore, in the words of the introduction, 'the legal, cultural, political, and even emotional consequences of the assassination.'" -The Federal Lawyer "Once again, the Lincoln Forum has assembled some of the finest historians and most compelling historical writers, this time to produce a lively collection of essays that manages to challenge many of our assumptions about Lincoln's assassination and the subsequent military trials of the conspirators. I learned a great deal from this volume and expect that every reader will come away with something new." -- -Matthew Pinsker author of Lincoln's Sanctuary:Abraham Lincoln and the Soldiers' Home "These wide-ranging thought provoking essays present a striking analysis of the contemporary impact and the memory of the murder of President Abraham Lincoln, the first American president to be assassinated while in office. These powerful, thoroughly researched presentations, with several impressive illustrations, provide important information about one of our nation's most critical and memorable times, a time still significant in American social and political life." -- -James Oliver Horton author of The Landmarks of African American History and co-editor of Slavery and Public History: The Tough Stuff of American Memory "A brilliant addition to the Lincoln assassination bookshelf! This collection of essays, by some of the foremost authorities in the field, is a refreshingly new look at an endlessly captivating but tragic moment that changed America forever. Beginning with a creatively perceptive look at the history of the public response to Lincoln's death, each excellent essay offers new and original research and interpretation of the plot, capture, trial and execution of the assassination co-conspirators. While illuminating the historical truth, these essays also simultaneously expose the myths and trappings of distorted histories that have long shaped an enduring national memory of that horrific event. Engaging and written with flair, there is something here to please and excite everyone!" -- -Kate Clifford Larson, Ph.D. Simmons CollegeTable of ContentsList of Figures Acknowledgments Introduction 1 1. Cornell University Press Confronting Slavery
Book SynopsisEdward Coles, who lived from 1786-1868, is most often remembered for his antislavery correspondence with Thomas Jefferson in 1814, freeing his slaves in 1819, and leading the campaign against the legalization of slavery in Illinois during the 1823-24 convention contest. In this new full-length biography Suzanne Cooper Guasco demonstrates for the first time how Edward Coles continued to confront slavery for nearly forty years after his time in Illinois. Not only did he attempt to shape the slavery debates in Virginia immediately before and after Nat Turner''s rebellion, he also consistently entered national political discussions about slavery throughout the 1830s, 40s, and 50s. On each occasion Coles promoted a vision of the nation that combined a celebration of America''s antislavery past with an endorsement of free labor ideology and colonization, a broad appeal that was designed to mollify his fellow-countrymen''s sense of economic self-interest and virulent anti-black prejuTrade ReviewSuzanne Cooper Guasco... tells Coles's story as a 'life-long confrontation with slavery.' Her account is fascinating, inspiring, and tragic all at once. * Claremont Review of Books *The book's major strengths lie in Guasco's recognition that Coles's life and antislavery politics span eras, regions, and ideologies that historians often examine in isolation, preventing them from seeing nineteenth-century social and political histories as deeply intertwined. She effectively makes the case for Coles's own trajectory, demonstrates the development of antislavery politics over several decades, and thereby brings Coles more fully into the historiography of antislavery. * Ohio Valley History *Suzanne Cooper Guasco's elegantly written study of Edward Coles, second governor of Illinois, proves that his life story merits historians' attention. Cooper Guasco has a gift for selecting diverting examples, and she adeptly depicts how throughout his long public life Coles battled sectionalism, sought national unity, and tirelessly argued that the United States' founders opposed slavery. * Middle West Review *Suzanne Cooper Guasco ably illuminates the debate over slavery and race from the revolutionary era through the early Reconstruction years, bridging important historiographic gaps in the process. * The Journal of American History *

Blight, Pulitzer Prize winning author of Frederick Douglass: Prophet of FreedomDrawing on previously untapped sources, Young Frederick Douglass recreates with fidelity and in convincing detail the background and early life of the man who was to become the gadfly of America's conscience and the undisputed spokesman for nineteenth-century black Americans. At the time of Douglass's death in 1895, one eulogist wrote that he was pTable of ContentsForeword by, David W. BlightForeword by, James MichenerPrefaceAcknowledgementsPart I. A Boy Named Frederick1. Johns Hopkins University Press The Wilson Circle
Book SynopsisAn in-depth look at the key advisers to Woodrow Wilson during the course of his tumultuous presidency. Nearly 100 years after Woodrow Wilson's death, historians continue to be divided over the impact of his presidency and his political leadership. The collapse of Wilson's health in 1919 and his failure to win Senate approval of the Versailles Treaty have tainted his legacy, as have the racism of his administration and its disregard for civil liberties after American entry into World War I. In The Wilson Circle, Charles E. Neu takes a new look at the Wilson presidency through the lens of his inner circle, a group of ten advisers. Some of these advisers, like his wife Ellen, were by his side at the start of his term, while others joined him as the challenges facing Wilson's presidency mounted. All of these advisers believed that, whatever Wilson's flaws as a leader, they had served a great man whose legacy would endure. Struck by his magnetism, his oratorical gifts, and the power and pTable of ContentsPrologue: Helping the PresidentAcknowledgments1. Woodrow Wilson2. Ellen Axson Wilson3. Josephus Daniels4. Johns Hopkins University Press Collecting Shakespeare
Book SynopsisThe first biography of Henry and Emily Folger, who acquired the largest and finest collection of Shakespeare in the world. In Collecting Shakespeare, Stephen H. Grant recounts the American success story of Henry and Emily Folger. Shortly after marrying in 1885, the Folgers started buying, cataloging, and storing all manner of items about Shakespeare and his era. Emily earned a master's degree in Shakespeare studies. The frugal couple worked passionately as a tight-knit team during the Gilded Age, financing their hobby with the fortune Henry earned as president of Standard Oil Company of New York, where he was a trusted associate of John D. Rockefeller Sr. While a number of American universities offered to house the collection, the Folgers wanted to give it to the American people. Afraid the price of antiquarian books would soar if their names were revealed, they secretly acquired prime real estate on Capitol Hill near the Library of Congress. They commissioned the design and construction of an elegant building with a reading room, public exhibition hall, and the Elizabethan Theatre. The Folger Shakespeare Library was dedicated on the Bard's birthday on April 23, 1932. The library houses 82 First Folios, 277,000 books, and 60,000 manuscripts. It welcomes more than 100,000 visitors a year and provides professors, scholars, graduate students, and researchers from around the world with access to the collections. It is also a vibrant center in Washington, DC, for cultural programs, including theater, concerts, lectures, and poetry readings. With unprecedented access to the primary sources within the Folger vault, Grant draws on interviews with surviving Folger relatives and visits to 35 related archives in the United States and in Britain to create a portrait of the remarkable couple who ensured that Shakespeare would have a beautiful home in America.Trade ReviewGrant provides not just a biography of the 'onlie begetters' of this astonishing library, but also an account of the worlds in which the Folgers lived. The result is a superlative book . . . Crisply written and packed with facts and anecdotes.—Michael Dirda, Washington PostThis thoroughly researched and accessibly written book is first of all a fascinating biography of how a man and his wife devoted their lives to gathering the world's largest collection of the original folios of William Shakespeare, plus a range of literature from as early as 1500. It is also a meditation on why some museums endure and thrive, while others lapse into confusion and decay.—James Srodes, Washington TimesThis first biography of Emily Jordan Folger and Henry C. Folger. . . taps hitherto neglected resources to trace their joint obsession with collecting Shakespeare.—ChoiceGrant's text is indeed well-researched and written, in a snappish and easily-readable style, even though there are many details.—Jeffery Moser, Rocky Mountain Review of Language and LiteratureWhile Collecting Shakespeare is biography intertwined with technicalities of antiquarian book and artifact collecting, it undoubtedly belongs on the Shakespeare lover's bookshelf.—Felicia Hardison Londre, Theatre JournalStephen H. Grant tells the story of the Folgers' joint obsession clearly and efficiently; the illustrations he reproduces are particularly engaging. . . Shakespeareans, book collectors and all who have worked at the Library and who love and admire it will enjoy Collecting Shakespeare.—H.R. Woudhuysen, Times Literary SupplementAn engrossing read . . . Grant has written an illuminating book that artfully places Henry and Emily Folger in their own time while showing how they helped to shape the scholarship of ours.—Renaissance QuarterlyStephen H. Grant uses primary sources from within the Folger Library vault, interviews with the Folger family, and visits to nearly three dozen archives to craft a compelling narrative. . . This biography could be read as a perfect case study of how a cultural institution in 20th century America was conceived, created, and accomplished. It will delight students of Washington’s early 20th century history and readers who are seeking background on the impact of the Folger Shakespeare Library.—Washington History. . . University of Toronto Press A Year at Hartlebury Or The Election
Book SynopsisThe revelation that a long forgotten novel first published anonymously in 1834 is the work of Benjamin Disraeli and his sister Sarah is an exciting literary event. Newly discovered letters between brother and sister prove without doubt that it was written jointly by them. We do not have to look far for the reason for their secrecy. The vividly described election which forms the centrepiece of the story is clearly based on Disraeli's recent experiences as an unsuccessful candidate in two elections at High Wycombe. His political career had a long way to go and the last thing he wanted was to jeopardize it by revealing his motives in the past or his hopes for the future. The hero, Aubrey Bohun, has, like Disraeli, recently returned from mysterious travels in the East, but unlike him has his own castle and an income of 30,000 a year. Bohun obviously contains an element of wish fulfilment and allows the authors to incorporate in the novel elements of wish fulfilment and allows the
