Jacana Media (Pty) Ltd Flashes in her soul, the life of Jabu Ndlovu
Book SynopsisThis is the life and times of Jabu Ndlovu—wife, mother, worker, union activist—who fought for the rights of her fellow workers and community members. Flashes in Her Soul is the second book in the Hidden Voices series and is the story of Jabu Ndlovu, a shop steward of the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa and a community leader in Imbali near Pietermaritzburg. Jabu, her husband and her oldest daughter were killed in a brutal attack on their home in May 1989. This story shows the courage and compassion with which Jabu fought against all forms of exploitation. Her story represents the experiences of thousands of women who struggled and suffered as a result of the war in KwaZulu-Natal in the 1980s and 1990s. Jabu's story reminds us of the devastation that violence brings to families, communities and organizations. The politics and dynamics behind the violence today are not the same as in the 1980s and early 1990s, but the need remains for strong and moral leaders like Jabu to speak out and organize against the violence and the moral corruption that lies behind it.

V & Q Books Journey through a Tragicomic Century: The Absurd
Book Synopsis"...particularly peculiar, breath-taking and worth telling." Alexander Solloch, NDR Kultur. Francis Nenik's thrilling slice of narrative non-fiction is about the life of the forgotten writer Hasso Grabner, told with great joy in language and love of absurdity. The journey takes us from the Young Communists in 1920s Leipzig to wartime Crete, with Grabner falling from steelworks director to a vilified author banned from publishing his work in the GDR.Trade Review"Truth stranger than fiction, told with lancet-like irony. Nenik follows his picaresque pragmatist across the shifting fronts of socialism and fascism, navigating the horrors of World War II with black humour recalling Catch-22 or Slaughterhouse-Five, and finding the absurdist entertainment value in East German party intrigues. The verbal pyrotechnics drive an incisive reflection on the workings of the 'grotesque named history'." Isabel Cole, writer and translator of Wolfgang Hilbig

Book SynopsisJohn F. Kennedy was not only a president, but also a symbol for America's most cherished ideas. Not the history of a man's life but the biography of his idea, The Kennedy Obsession traces the creation of Kennedy's image as an inspired-and inspiring-fiction.Trade ReviewHellmann understands that reading involves more than the consumption of ideas--it is a theater of the mind, in which the reader imaginatively tests a range of roles, voices, identities. Hellmann shows how Kennedy's own early reading (in combination with family lore) provided him with the language of myth, his sense of identity and role. He then analyzes the complex ways in which this private myth-making interacted with the process of social myth-making (in mass media and politics) to shape 'The Kennedy Obsession.' -- Richard Slotkin American UniversityTable of ContentsPrologue: A Bedside Visit 1: How Kennedy Awoke: Jack's Reading and Why England Slept 2: John Hersey's "Survival": A Literary Experiment and Its Political Adaptation 3: The Old Man and the Boy: Papa Hemingway and Profiles in Courage 4: The Hollywood Screen and Kennedy's Televised Showdown with Truman 5: The Erotics of a Presidency 6: An Assassination and Its Fictions
