Book SynopsisThe history of an entrepreneurial family whose work influenced followers of the Arts and Crafts Movement, Gothic Revivalism, Art Needlework and Aestheticism LONGLISTED for the Arnold Bennett Society Book Prize 2020 This book is a richly illustrated history of the Wardle family of Leek, Staffordshire, which rose to prominence in fine textile production in the second half ofthe nineteenth century. At its core is an object-centred exploration revealing how an entrepreneurial family responded to complex international factors. Beautiful dyed, printed and embroidered textiles were created in Leek using traditional craft skills. Followers of the Arts and Crafts Movement and Gothic Revivalism, as well as Art Needlework and Aestheticism, benefited from the family enterprises that flourished despite rapid industrialisation. The Wardle family's rich legacy is played out against the backdrop of the Anglo-Indian silk trade. Thomas Wardle travelled in India and integrated Indian designs into British silk production. His work attracted William Morris, Walter Crane and A. L. Liberty, among others, and their designs, printed by Wardle, were internationally applauded. Elizabeth Wardle, embroiderer, worked with many major architects such as R. N. Shaw, G. G. Scott Jnr and J. D. Sedding.Lavishly illustrated, this book will be of interest to those interested in textile and fashion history and the history of the Arts and Crafts movement, as well as the relationship between the British Empire and the Indian subcontinent. BRENDA M. KING is a textile historian and holds the Chair of the Textile Society. She is also a freelance lecturer in the History of Design and Museum and Heritage Studies and the author of Silk and Empire (2005 and 2009) and Dye, Print, Stitch: Textiles by Thomas and Elizabeth Wardle (2009).Trade ReviewA welcome addition to literature already available on textile history of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. * JOURNAL OF DESIGN HISTORY *A valuable addition to the history of textile production. * THE VICTORIAN *Required reading for those interested in textile and fashion history [and] the Arts and Crafts movement. * ASIAN TEXTILES *Including detailed narrative, historical black-and-white photographs, and color plates of gorgeous silk and gold embroideries, this volume fully documents the Wardles' important roles as entrepreneurs and community leaders. Recommended. * CHOICE *King's account is notable for its close descriptions of the original textile [Bayeux Tapestry] in France as well as the copy created in Leek. King's richly illustrated historical account shifts the focus from Thomas Wardle to his wife, family and wider social and cultural milieu. * MIDLAND HISTORY *It is a valuable resource and will, hopefully, lead to the discovery of further archive material about the Leek embroiderers and the work of the intriguing Wardle family. * SPAB, THE SOCIETY FOR THE PROTECTION OF ANCIENT BUILDINGS *This book belongs on the bookshelves of those interested not only in the Wardle family, but also in architecture, textile dying and printing, and embroidery of the Victorian era-the time of the Arts and Crafts movement, Gothic Revivalism, and the Aesthetic Movement. -- Maureen Daly Goggin * Victorian Studies *Table of ContentsIntroduction The Wardle Family and its Circle The Business of Stitch Stitching Narrative: Leek's Facsimile of the Bayeux Tapestry Stitch Meets Stone Rediscoveries and Revelations Appendix Bibliography

  • Henrietta Maria: Conspirator, Warrior, Phoenix

Vintage Publishing Henrietta Maria: Conspirator, Warrior, Phoenix

Book Synopsis***A Best Book of 2022, The Times******Book of the Year, Spectator***A myth-busting biography of Henrietta Maria, wife of Charles I, which retells the dramatic story of the civil war from her perspectiveHenrietta Maria, Charles I's queen, is the most reviled consort to have worn the crown of Britain's three kingdoms. Condemned as that 'Popish brat of France', a 'notorious whore' and traitor, she remains in popular memory the wife who wore the breeches and turned her husband Catholic - so causing a civil war - and a cruel and bigoted mother.Leanda de Lisle's White King was hailed as 'the definitive modern biography about Charles I' (Observer). Here she considers Henrietta Maria's point of view, unpicking the myths to reveal a very different queen. We meet a new bride who enjoyed annoying her uptight husband, a leader of fashion in clothes and cultural matters, an innovative builder and gardener and an advocate of the female voice in public affairs. No bigot, her closest friends included 'Puritans' as well as Catholics, and she led the anti-Spanish faction at court linked to the Protestant cause in the Thirty Years' War. When civil war came, the strategic planning and fundraising of his 'She Generalissimo' proved crucial to Charles's campaign. The story takes us to courts across Europe, and looks at the fate of Henrietta Maria's mother and sisters, who also faced civil wars. Her estrangement from her son Henry is explained, and the image of the Restoration queen as an irrelevant crone is replaced with Henrietta Maria as an influential 'phoenix queen', presiding over a court with 'more mirth' even than that of the Merry Monarch, Charles II.It is time to look again at this despised queen and judge if she is not in fact one of our most remarkable.'this is revisionist history at its absolute best' ANDREW ROBERTS'beautifully written and endlessly fascinating' ALEXANDER LARMAN'popular history of the finest kind' RONALD HUTTONTrade ReviewA thrilling biography -- DANIEL BROOKS * The Daily Telegraph *Competent, intelligent, fun... de Lisle...has a visceral understanding of the complex emotions that swirled inside Henrietta Maria * The Times, *Books of the Year* *A shrewd and elegant reassessment of Charles's I consort and widow... She was certainly a fighter -- Clare Mulley * Spectator, *Books of the Year* *Brilliantly written, mesmerising, superb scholarship and totally immersive . . . a total game changer -- KATE WILLIAMS, author of Rival Queens: the Betrayal of Mary Queen of ScottsWith grace and sensitivity, de Lisle cuts through the misogyny to reveal a different Henrietta Maria . . . De Lisle understands that history is a story of people; she possesses a visceral understanding of the emotions that swirled inside Henrietta Maria . . . she was not England's greatest queen, but she was probably the most remarkable -- GERARD DEGROOT * The Times * Book of the Week * *De Lisle has made a speciality of bringing Tudors and Stuarts back to blazing life... The result is deeply satisfying and makes an excellent companion to her earlier much-admired biography of Charles I, White King -- Kathryn Hughes * Sunday Times *A captivating, richly detailed historical tale that shines a light on the hidden genius of an extraordinary woman * Literary Review *de Lisle turns her attention to [Charles I's] wife, Henrietta Maria, similarly shading with nuance a character who can sometimes be reduced to primary-colour simplicity * History Today *A glorious resurrection of one of the most misrepresented queens of England . . . finally, thanks to Leanda de Lisle's meticulous research, she has a biography worthy of her fascinating life -- AMANDA FOREMAN, author of A World on FireHenrietta Maria's remarkable life is recounted with gusto in this sharp, sparky book... it makes vivid use of recent work on her court and queenship, brings people and personalities to the fore and will be a particular delight to those new to the period -- ANNA KEAY * Spectator *

  • Bloomsbury Publishing PLC Donald Trump: The Making of a World View

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisOn November 8, 2016, Donald Trump won the American presidential election, to the surprise of many across the globe. Now that Trump is Commander-in-Chief of the most powerful country on earth, Americans and non-Americans alike have been left wondering what this will mean for the world. It has been claimed that Trump's foreign policy views are impulsive, inconsistent and that they were improvised on the campaign trail. However, drawing on interviews from as far back as 1980, Charlie Laderman and Brendan Simms show that this assumption is dangerously false. They reveal that Trump has had a consistent position on international trade and America's alliances since he first considered running for president in the late 1980s. Furthermore, his foreign policy views have deep roots in American history. For the new President, almost every international problem that has confronted the United States can be explained by the mistakes of its leaders. Yet, after decades of dismissing America's leaders as fools and denouncing their diplomacy, Trump must now prove that he can do better.Over the past three decades, he has been laying out in interviews, articles, books and tweets what amounts to a foreign policy philosophy. This book reveals the world view that Trump brings to the Oval Office. It shows how that world view was formed, what might result if it is applied in policy terms and the potential consequences for the rest of the world.Trade Review'The unthinkable has happened: Donald Trump is now President of the United States. We can condemn, dismiss, and ridicule him. But it makes more sense to understand him. This short book uses his lifeworld and his own language to do so, and offers an insightful and compelling account of his world view, and especially his view of foreign affairs. For anybody who wants to know what makes Trump tick and how he is likely to behave this is an absolutely must read.' - Richard Ned Lebow, James O. Freedman Presidential Professor Emeritus of Government, Dartmouth College, 'This book does a great service in identifying the genesis of President Trump's worldview, based on his words, and considering its likely impact on the future of American foreign policy and the western alliance.' - Professor John Bew, author of Realpolitik: A History, 'In this insightful study, Laderman and Simms expose the contours of Donald Trump's thinking on foreign policy and explore its roots in US history since 1945. This book refutes the widespread view that Trump can simply be dismissed as an improviser and a showman. Essential reading for anyone who wants to understand the Trump presidency and what it means for the rest of us.' - Sir Christopher Clark, author of Sleepwalkers: How Europe Went to War in 1914, 'Highly recommend this study of the development of Trump's foreign policy world view... Instant and powerful illumination!' - Adam Tooze, author of The Deluge: The Great War and the Remaking of Global Order, 'The historians Charlie Laderman and Brendan Simms show in a new book, since the 1980s Trump has developed a consistent worldview. It is highly critical of the dominant US global strategy since 1945 of building and maintaining a liberal capitalist international order'. - Alex Callinicos, Socialist Worker, 'The most comprehensive account yet of Trump's thinking over the years.' - Paul D. Out of stock

Book SynopsisMarion Cave Rosselli is remembered as the `perfect companion' of the Italian Antifascist leader Carlo Rosselli, assassinated in Paris in June 1937. But little is known about the young English student fired with revolutionary enthusiasm who moved to Florence in 1919, witnessed the violent march of fascism to power and thereafter became a resolute adversary of the Mussolini dictatorship. Based on a wealth of little-used private and public archives, this biography retraces her journey from a modest home on the outskirts of London to the first underground Antifascist opposition in Italy, from the prison island of Lipari to exile in Paris and the United States. It reveals the social, cultural and existential factors which underpinned her unflinching political engagement alongside her husband. It also highlights the many challenges faced by Antifascist women within a highly patriarchal movement by bringing to life the figure of a woman who challenged the traditional division of labour within the family and struggled to carve a political role for herself. Reconstructing Marion Cave Rosselli's experience in relation to the multiple political, social and cultural worlds she moved in, this book broadens our understanding of the Antifascist movement and offers a richly-detailed portrait of a time full of hopes, anxieties and disappointments.Trade Review'A good overview for students, academics and all those who are interested in the antifascist exile and especially in the Rosselli family during fascism.' - Stéfanie Prezioso, Professor of Modern European History, University of Lausanne, SwitzerlandTable of ContentsIntroduction A British Education Witnessing the Rise of Fascism in Florence Becoming Biancafiore The Best of Times, the Worst of Times From Milan to Savona Welcome to the `Escape Club' New Beginnings Building a Life in Exile The Personal is Political Death in Normandy Hope against Hope So Far Away from Italy Hope is Reborn Coming Home
