Emil Saudek wuchs in einer jüdischen Familie in der böhmisch-mährischen Provinz auf, studierte und arbeitete viele Jahre in Wien und ließ sich anschließend in Prag nieder. Neben seiner Beamtentätigkeit übersetzte er die Werke von bedeutenden Autoren wie Otokar Brezina, Josef S. Machar oder Tomáš G. Masaryk ins Deutsche und veröffentlichte selbst in tschechisch- und deutschsprachigen Publikationen. Er verkehrte in illustren Kreisen und stand in Kontakt mit zahlreichen Schriftstellerinnen und Schriftstellern seiner Zeit wie z.B. Ivan Olbracht, Stefan Zweig, Ružena Svobodová und Hugo von Hofmannsthal.Der Band widmet sich der Biografie sowie der übersetzerischen und publizistischen Tätigkeiten Saudeks. Er war nicht nur ein Vermittler zwischen der deutschsprachigen und tschechischen Kultur, sondern aufgrund seiner Herkunft ebenso ein Vermittler zwischen Provinz und Metropole. Martin Teubner wërdigt Leben und Werk Haucks bis zu seinem Wechsel von Erlangen nach Leipzig, indem er Wissenschaft und Lebenswelt des Kirchenhistorikers verarbeitet und die Methode der historischen Biographieforschung und Wissenschaftsgeschichtsschreibung anwendet. Als Quellenbasis dienen Teubner bislang ungenëgend berëcksichtigte bzw. neu erschlossene Archivalien sowie Haucks bibliographisches Werk bis 1889.

Book SynopsisIn the descriptions of the life story of Anton Engelbrecht (1487-1556), a predominantly negative opinion was wrongly expressed for a long time. In this biographical study about him, originally a dissertation, Dr. Cornelis H.W. van den Berg's humanism and criticism of the Church of Rome, as well as his resistance to the development of the Church in the Reformation and his defense of religious freedom. Engelbrecht, who became auxiliary bishop in the diocese of Speyer in 1520, had to give up his office in 1524 out of Lutheran sympathy. He became a preacher in Strasbourg, where the Reformation gained the upper hand, but was expelled from his office in 1534. He returned to the Church of Rome because of a lack of better things. After leaving Strasbourg in 1544, he worked in Cologne, Nassau and Koblenz in the service of the old church. He died in Strasbourg in 1556. The book is based on extensive literature research and unpublished sources from various archives. It is historical material, the vast majority of which have not yet been used for historiography. In the Acts of the Sinister Sinodum Concerning the Upper Class (1533), Engelbrecht put his defense of religious freedom on paper. The full text will be published with notes for the first time in the appendix.
