A fertile trove...." * Kirkus Reviews *"[T]his book makes an important contribution to the growing literature on women in the Beat Generation." -- William Gargan * Library Journal *"This captivating chronicle of a free wheeling dialogue between two phenomenal women resonates with depth, support and mature self-awareness. More then a fascinating record of contemporary friendship, Hettie Jones and Helene Dorn personify brave, full artistic lives enriched by their enduring platonic love." -- Ilka Scobie * American Book Review *Table of ContentsIntroduction 1 Chapter 1. 6 Chapter 2. 34 Chapter 3. 51 Chapter 4. 77 Chapter 5. 100 Chapter 6. 122 Chapter 7. 140 Chapter 8. 163 Chapter 9. 184 Chapter 10. 203 Chapter 11. 220 Chapter 12. 238 Chapter 13. 253 Chapter 14. 279 Chapter 15. 297 Chapter 16. 313 Chapter 17. 333 Doing 70 351 Acknowledgments 357 Credits 359 Index 361

  • Songs of the Unsung

Duke University Press Songs of the Unsung

Book SynopsisJazz pianist, trombonist, composer, educator, and community leader Horace Tapscott tells his life story, from his childhood in Houston and growing up in Los Angeles, to his early professional career, creation of the Pan Afrikan Peoples Arkestra, and his work to build and serve L.A.'s black community.Trade Review"Songs of the Unsung is one of those special autobiographical narratives that comes along once in a while, and successfully captivates its reading audience with the complete candor of the person telling the story! This is an important sociological document, for it tells the life of Horace Tapscott, one of the most unique figures in the jazz of Black Los Angeles. . . . What is most unique about Songs of the Unsung is that it reveals a man who not only lived jazz, but contributed to it in meaningful ways, and was a walking masterpiece of the personal philosophy he advocated. He lived to teach, help others, perform, create. Horace Tapscott succeeded at each. Songs of the Unsung lets the reader see how he did it. Songs of the Unsung is excellent reading. This book entertains and enlightens at the same time, and is a fine reading experience!" -- Lee Prosser * Jazz Review *"Songs of the Unsung offers a glimpse into the life of a jazz musician who resolved not to abandon the place where he started out—the streets of South-Central." -- Jonathan Kirsch * Los Angeles Times *"[A] raw, intimate autobiography of L.A. free jazz pianist, trombonist, and composer Tapscott. . . . [T]his retrospective will enable jazz enthusiasts to revel in the life of a unique and talented underground musician. . . ." * Publishers Weekly *"[Isoardi] preserves Tapscott's part-preacher, part-hipster patois—in which, for example, he inflects the word 'out' to describe free jazz, police brutality, injustice, good luck, violent rage, unexpected generosity, spontaneous affection and insanity. Songs of the Unsung is a witness to hope, one man's determination to create art of lasting value and the power of music to connect people. It is, in the profoundest sense, 'out' " -- Jim Gerard * Washington Post *"[O]ffers fascinating insights into Tapscott's work as a composer and bandleader, as well as his memories of L.A. during the turbulent 1960s." -- Aaron Cohen * DownBeat *"A valuable firsthand account of American music and culture that will make a welcome addition to any collection." * Library Journal *"Horace Tapscott . . . emerges as an eternal symbol of all that is noble in the music in transition community. This highly advanced theme emerges from a detailed life history that is nothing short of stunning. . . . Songs of the Unsung is an important statement in the philosophy of improvised music. Highly recommended." -- James D. Armstrong, Jr. * Jazz Now *"Isoardi has done a fine job of preserving Tapscott's voice—the narrative is fluent, conversational in tone and packed with both colourful incident and tart social commentary. . . . [A]s a gripping account of a quietly heroic life, and as a rare document about the West Coast’s black cultural underground, Songs of the Unsung is essential reading." -- Graham Lock * Jazzwise *"Page after page, Tapscott offhandedly knocks down stereotypes about African-American communities, like pines behind an eruption. . . . Tapscott's controversial narrative, filled with stories about 'the cats' and their 'out' behavior is fascinating. . . . But more valuable than the book’s entertainment quotient is its map of possibilities." -- Greg Burk * LA Weekly *"The details and local lore of Songs are beautifully rendered, and Tapscott’s modesty and perseverance are qualities to behold." -- Hua Hsu * The Wire *"Songs of the Unsung . . . sets forth an astonishing, searingly honest view of one segment of music history that is indeed unsung. . . . [The] memoir reminds us with stunning candor that too much has happened under the radar of the jazz industry. . . . We need more books like Songs of the Unsung, by which we can come to understand creative musicians as agents of change at home, effecting local pockets of activity with universal ramifications. For Tapscott provides us with an unwritten truth behind this radically unfinished music called jazz." -- Vijay Iyer * Current Musicology *Table of ContentsAcknowledgments ix Foreword / Steven Isoardi xi Preface xiii 1. • The Rest of It

Duke University Press The Rest of It

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThe Rest of It is the untold and revealing story of how Martin Duberman—a major historian and a founding figure in the history of gay and lesbian studies—managed to survive and be productive during a difficult twelve year period in which he was beset by drug addiction, health problems, and personal loss.Trade Review"Challenging gay invisibility and confronting anti-gay bigotry among the intelligentsia are key battlefronts on which Marty fought early, bravely and often. The passion of his arguments and efforts is everywhere in the testimony of The Rest of Us." -- Lawrence D. Mass * Medium *"Sharp and engaging, with tasteful anecdotes that anchor Duberman not in a historical lineage but firmly within his own personal journey. This highly intelligent book is not just another contribution to gay history; it is also an important pillar in the author's literary biography. A fascinating look into a significant period in the life of a much-loved literary figure." * Kirkus Reviews *"We queers are better off, better informed and better empowered, for Duberman’s astute, engaged lifetime of work. We are also better off for reading The Rest of It, for understanding the beautifully written history of one man, yes, but in effect, a part of the history of us all." -- D. Gilson * Lambda Literary Review *"The Rest of It is not a revisionist memoir or the roars of a gay literary lion in winter. It is instead an intimate, revealing, and vibrant account of a writer’s personal struggles with Duberman in top form. Duberman’s account of this pivotal time in GLBTQ history is as sharp as ever...." -- Lew J. Whittington * New York Journal of Books *"Duberman is one of America's great intellectuals; all readers can enjoy this well-rounded self-portrait of a tumultuous decade in the life of an important thinker." -- David Azzolina * Library Journal *"The Rest of It, a memoir of the years 1976 to 1988, confirms Duberman’s status as one of our most brilliant and essential memoirists. This is clearly a skilled, dedicated historian’s memoir, as it minutely details the writer’s personal life while also grounding us in the political and social turmoil of the time. . . . The Rest of It will engage and enrich readers with its brutally honest examination of one man’s life lived fully. It deserves a place on your bookshelf." -- Hank Trout * A&U Magazine *"Duberman's emotionally raw and keenly observant memoir illuminates both his turbulent life and the years when gay publishing began to flower just as AIDS started to devastate its landscape." -- Kevin Howell * Shelf Awareness *"Martin Duberman has been a touchstone for a generation of gay men, and, once again, he offers up his life experiences to help us better understand our own. The Rest of It is a lively book; it forces readers to engage with the difficult, often contentious personality of a brilliantly accomplished gay man wrestling with his demons." -- Daniel A. Burr * Gay & Lesbian Review *"Filled with tidbits of gossip with appearances by luminaries of the era like Gore Vidal and Norman Mailer, The Rest Of Us is a brutally honest examination of a painful period in the writer’s life and career." * The Advocate *“[I] highly recommend this book. It was a pleasure to read, and I learned a great deal about Duberman and the world he inhabited. The book is at times witty, sad, happy, and darkly funny. We urge our students to write history ‘warts and all,’ and Duberman has turned that advice upon himself and produced a book that I am glad to have read.” -- Jerry Watkins * Journal of the History of Sexuality *Table of ContentsPreface xi 1. • Murrow

    Fordham University Press Murrow

Book SynopsisMurrow is the biography of America's foremost broadcast journalist, Edward R. Murrow.Trade Review"In this superb biography, Sperber tells the story of a reporter/commentator who set standards for broadcast news integrity. Part of CBS's fledgling news operation staff, Murrow honed his journalistic skills in London prior to WW II. Before and after the US joined the world conflict, he was describing the horror of Nazism via daily live CBS radio reports--from a rooftop in London during the blitz, from a transport plane during a paratroop drop over the Low Countries, from Buchenwald. Murrow continued to establish standards of reportage with his Hear It Now (on radio), See It Now (television), and CBS Reports (a television program that such covered sensitive issues as exploitation of migrant workers). CBS eventually became intolerant of heavy-duty journalism, and Murrow left the network. He continued to be harshly critical of the soft nature of television news. In 1960, he became head of the United States Information Agency; in 1965, he died of lung cancer at the age of 57. Sperber discusses both the programs and the corporate and political pressures they brought to Murrow. Includes exhaustive and interesting photographs (badly reproduced). Joining such biographies as Alexander Kendrick's Prime Time: The Life of Edward R. Murrow (1969) and Joseph Persico's Edward R. Murrow (1988), Sperber's volume falls short only because of the author's worshipful attitude. All collections." -Choice

Book SynopsisTrade ReviewThis delicious account of the greatly talented and productive Kramer and Heeley's adventures, misadventures, headaches, and thrills among their illustriously famous subjects is a joy to read. The quirks and maddening eccentricities of such greatly gifted giants as Frank Sinatra, Katharine Hepburn, James Stewart, et al., are all here on delightfully entertaining and often startling display. In the Company of Legends is so hard to put down I ate with one hand while reading it. -- Dick CavettA treasure trove of untold stories, culled from more than thirty years of candid conversations and unguarded moments with America's brightest stars and most powerful politicians. In the Company of Legends serves up one startling revelation after another. -- John Berendt, author of "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil"Katharine Hepburn, Paul Newman, and former MCA/Universal Studios Chairman, Lew Wasserman, to name just a few, were known for fiercely protecting their privacy, trusting very few, especially those in media. Joan Kramer and David Heeley not only succeeded in working with them, but also developed long-term personal relationships with these and many other Hollywood legends, which is rare, almost unheard of. Over the years, they've shared fascinating and behind-the-scenes stories about so many icons they were lucky enough to know. I'm certain that the readers of this book will enjoy the many peeks behind the curtain their book reveals. -- Blair Westlake, Former Chairman of Universal Studios Television and Corporate Vice President, Media & Entertainment for Microsoft CorporationJoan Kramer and David Heeley have produced definitive documentary portraits of many of Hollywood's biggest stars. Although I have been involved in the movie business for many decades, I found these behind-the-scenes stories of movie legends enthralling and revelatory. In the Company of Legends is a must-read for those who thought there was nothing new to discover about Katharine Hepburn, James Stewart, Paul Newman, Joanne Woodward, Jane Fonda, and the many other well-known personalities who fill the pages of this book. -- Roger L. Mayer, Former President Turner Entertainment Co., Recipient of Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Academy Award, and long-time Executive of Metro-Goldwyn-MayerThank you, David Heeley and Joan Kramer for giving us one of the best reasons ever for curling up with a book. After their treating us to some of the best, most literate and entertaining hours of television (includingKatharine Hepburn: All About Me, Bacall onBogart, The John Garfield Story, The Adventures of Errol Flynn and numerous other TV specials) they now offer us a book I never wanted to end, chock-full of constant surprises. In the Company of Legends is a king's ransom of fascinating stories about colorful, bigger than life people we know but don't know. The big bonus is that it's a book about dazzling personalities told by people who actually knew the celebrities they write about, worked with them and, further, socialized with them, aware of the their foibles and strengths from first-hand knowledge, not heresay. That's something both rare and refreshing in books today. This one deserves a high spot on your "must read" booklist for the year. -- Robert Osborne, host of "Turner Classic Movies"I've been involved in many of Joan's and David's projects over the years and they've told me fascinating stories about the many celebrities they've worked with, shedding new light on people I thought I knew. Now they are sharing these stories publicly for the first time. Anyone who goes to the movies, the theater, and watches television will treasure this book as much as I do. -- Joanne Woodward

He's a born storyteller who gives a fresh perspective on life's everyday experiences that have shaped us all. Dan Rather (he wrote the foreword) probably best describes him best. Book SynopsisThe story behind the writing of the best-selling Blue Highways is as fascinating as the epic trip itself. More than thirty years after his 14,000-mile, 38-state journey, William Least Heat-Moon reflects on the four years he spent capturing the lessons of the road trip on paper.Trade ReviewIn Writing Blue Highways, William Least Heat-Moon offers essential lessons that go well beyond craft: the power of perseverance, the potency of story, and the singular importance of honoring intuition. Students at all levels would do well to hear Heat-Moon’s hard-earned wisdom. An instructive, affirming look at the arduous and sometimes magical process by which an idea becomes a book." - Dinty W. Moore, author of The Mindful Writer: Nobles Truths of the Writing Life"In recounting the prolonged, often painful labour that finally resulted in the birth of his beautifully alive book, Heat-Moon provides far more illuminating detail on what’s required to write (or, more exactly, to write well) than any follow-these-steps "practical" manual....And as readers of Heat-Moon’s books know, one never regrets following his lead. Although Writing Blue Highways takes us on a distinctly different sort of journey - through more a mental than physical landscape - Heat-Moon again proves an expert and companionable guide." - St. Louis Post-Dispatch"Because Writing Blue Highways is a hybrid - part memoir, part how-to, and part cultural history - I think it will appeal to all kinds of readers. These readers will include, first and foremost, Blue Highways fans and readers of nonfiction in general, but I firmly believe this this is a book that should be on the shelf of every writer and widely adopted by teachers of creative nonfiction. It's fascinating, informative, and flat-out fun." - Ned Stuckey-French, author of The American Essay in the American Century"Any writer or writing workshop will find instruction and reassurance in this eloquent back story to Blue Highways, an iconic work of contemporary literary nonfiction. William Least Heat-Moon unfolds his writing process, from concept to reporting, notations to fitful drafts and ruthless revisions, spurred by readers and remembered advice from famous writers, all punctuated by the struggles familiar to any artist - self-doubt, rejection, despair, and determined regeneration." - Beth Taylor, Co-Director, Nonfiction Writing Program, Brown University"Writing Blue Highways: The Story of How a Book Happened is just the sort of text I've been seeking for my creative writing classes. It's a unique blend of memoir and advice, telling the story of a writer's process with wit, wisdom, and useful, often colourful guidance for writers at all stages of their careers. As he documents the development of his American road trip classic, Least Heat-Moon both instructs and inspires, showing how a deep and tenacious writing process can become a path to "resurrection, restoration, a return to a refigured and rebuilt life with rebuilt hopes." - Nancy McCabe, Director of the Writing Program, University of Pittsburgh at Bradford

Book SynopsisThe Yaysmawurk is a liturgical collection of brief saints' lives arranged according to the day on which they were celebrated in the annual church calendar. The name comes from the first words of most of the daily entries: Y-aysm awur, that is, On this day . . . The collection was part of the great and varied Armenian liturgical tradition from the turn of the first millennium. The first Yaysmawurk was translated from an existing Greek liturgical collection (the Synaxarion, where the lives are all collected). In fact, it is common knowledge that this Greek collection was the basis for nearly all such liturgical collections of the lives of the saints throughout the early Christian world. However, it was not a mere translation. Rather, it constituted a logical culmination of a long and steady development in the Armenian Church of what scholars today like to call the cult of the saints.
