Common Notions Bordertown Clashes Resource Wars and Contested
Book SynopsisA one-of-a-kind lyrical and fast-paced memoir of the frontlines and trenches of Native liberation in the Four Corners and Southwest in the 1970s.From the late summer of 1972 to the late summer of 1974, John Redhouse and many other Navajo and Indian rights activists threw all they had into mass movement organizing and direct action. And they were pretty good at it too in terms of effectiveness and impact.Written in the first-person and above all, with a collective spirit of generosity and witness, John Redhouse describes the hot temper of the times in the racist and exploitative border towns in the Four Corners area of the Southwest region. As John Redhouse says, “Without the People, you have nothing. But back then, we had a lot of people WITH us.” Yes, the Power of the People, the collective human spirit of the emerging local and regional Indian civil movement, thousands of us marching in the streets of Gallup and Farmington in northwestern New Mexico with our demands. A bold citizens arrest at city hall, a downtown street riot, burning images of enemy leaders in effigy. And more marches, demonstrations, and direct actions.Above all, though, there was that Spirit—that unbroken, unconquerable spirit—that moved us, that drove us, that led us. And that was just in the border towns. In that turbulent decade, there was also the rapidly rising and spreading with-the-people, on-the-land resistance struggles in the coal, uranium, and oil and gas fields, and in disputed territories in the San Juan and Black Mesa basins that were targeted for ethnic cleansing and mineral extraction.Bordertown Conflicts, Resource Wars, and Contested Territories in the Four Corners brings readers to the enduring issues of the day, traced over half a century ago, where John Redhouse and many more were in the middle of a revolution that unfolds to this day.

Little, Brown & Company When the Light Finds Us
Book SynopsisWhen the Light Finds Us is a testament to the indomitable human spirit and the power of a mother's love. Judy Henderson was a single mother with a successful small business of her own when she was arrested then convicted of a crime she did not commit. Sentenced to life in prison, Henderson faced the untenable: leaving her three-year-old son and thirteen-year-old daughter as she entered the brutal prison system. Even as she faced violence, mistreatment, and even encounters with live snakes and scorpions, Henderson persevered with hope and determination. She never lost sight of her innocence or her deeply held role as a mother, yet she also gained new purpose, fighting for her clemency and for the rights of incarcerated women, especially mothers. Henderson's unwavering faith transformed her incarceration into a mission of self-improvement and advocacy as she earned her GED and paralegal certificate, worked with nonprofit prison programs that fostered connections between incarcerated mothers and their children, and played a crucial role in passing Missouri's first battered women's bill. Equipped with knowledge and new skills, she became a guiding light for other imprisoned women and mothers, shepherding them through the clemency process. As the years passed, Henderson experienced hope through serendipitous events and calls, letters, and too infrequent visits with her children and other family. With the support of the prosecutor who once sought her conviction and the Missouri governor, Henderson's perseverance was rewarded when she was granted clemency and received a full pardon after nearly thirty-five years behind bars. When the Light Finds Us is a gripping narrative that explores the depths of human resilience and the transformative power of hope. Henderson's story will inspire readers to persevere through their own struggles, reminding us of the strength of the human spirit and the unbreakable bond of a mother's love. In a world often filled with darkness, Judy Henderson's journey is a beacon of light, illuminating the path to redemption and the triumph of justice.

Book SynopsisUnique, transgressive and as funny as its subject, A Life Discarded has all the suspense of a murder mystery. Written with his characteristic warmth, respect and humour, Masters asks you to join him in celebrating an unknown and important life left on the scrap heap.A Life Discarded is a biographical detective story. In 2001, 148 tattered and mould-covered notebooks were discovered lying among broken bricks in a skip on a building site in Cambridge. Tens of thousands of pages were filled to the edges with urgent handwriting. They were a small part of an intimate, anonymous diary, starting in 1952 and ending half a century later, a few weeks before the books were thrown out. Over five years, the award-winning biographer Alexander Masters uncovers the identity and real history of their author, with an astounding final revelation.A Life Discarded is a true, shocking, poignant, often hilarious story of an ordinary life. The author of the diaries, known only as I', is the tragicomic patron Trade Review‘A bizarre, engrossing, affectionate book that is a triumph on every level.’ The Times ‘Profoundly moving.’ Daily Mail ‘If Masters investigations feel like a Paul Auster detective story, there are also traces of Alan Bennet bad Barbary Pym seeping through the Cambridge hedges … It’s not life affirming – Masters isn’t slick or pompous enough for that – but life-probing, pushing at the boundaries of empathy and understanding.’ The Sunday Times ‘Masters is a beautiful writer: funny, inquisitive and attentive.’ Observer ‘Intriguingly original … A ripping yarn from start to finish and as impressively chaotic and hugely enjoyable a dip into a skip as one could ever hope for.’ Express ‘Playful, unsettling and altogether compelling … pin-sharp and generously open to eccentricity … He has produced an ingenious new twist on the concept of a ghostwritten biography, in which the ghost turns out to be the kind of person who usually disappears between the cracks of society without leaving a trace behind. In A Life Discarded she is brilliantly fleshed out and brought back to life.’ The Spectator ‘Masters has written a book that engenders in the reader the inexhaustible sympathy for the sorrow, and the solace, of the unconventional life.’ Telegraph ‘Masters wonderfully exposes all the questions about identity, in writing or in the flesh, that this enormous, rambling, sad diary raises … Masters tells his tale with such verve ‘ Mary Beard, Guardian ‘Masters’ interest is firmly in obscure and unseen lives. That’s not all that sets his books apart: they have a postmodern playfulness, the writing process described in the narrative and their subjects reading and commenting (not always favourably) on the work-in-progress, while doodles, photos and knowing, Tristram Shandy-style jokes dot the text … A fascinating and surprisingly funny book’ FT ‘Fascinating and funny’ FT ‘Charming, mercurial and joyous …[a] masterclass in narrative investigation’ Sunday Times, Books of the Year

Bloomsbury Publishing PLC Among the Wolves of Court
Book SynopsisThe tragic story of Anne Boleyn has been retold over the centuries, yet two key figures in Anne's lifeher father Thomas and brother George are often relegated to the margins of the history of Henry VIII's turbulent reign. Well before Anne's coronation in 1533, Thomas was regarded as one of Henry's most skilled and experienced ambassadors, and George was a talented young courtier on the rise. But Anne''s downfall was to have a devastating effect on her family ultimately costing her and her brother their lives. A family whose success and prestige had been shaped over generations was destroyed in a violent and brutal episode as the king sought a new wife and a male heir. In this first biography devoted to the Boleyn men, Lauren Mackay takes us beyond the stereotypes of Thomas and George to present a story that has almost been lost to history. This book follows the Boleyn men as they negotiated their way through the ruthless game of politics among the wolves of the court, and esTrade ReviewDr Mackay’s combined biography of the men seeks to dispel these notions through a committed act of scholarship – and I have to say, she entirely succeeds. Thomas the diplomat, the negotiator, the councillor, even Thomas the jouster, are explored in detail ... This work adds greatly to our understanding of the Boleyn family before Anne’s rise, and the important diplomatic and foreign affairs that they were involved in. * Tudor Times *[U]tterly fascinating and indispensable … [Makes] for exuberant reading. * Open Letters Review *The presentation of the beautifully designed and illustrated book shows that it appeals to a wider readership. * Zeitschrift fur Historische Forschung (Bloomsbury Translation) *Table of ContentsList of Plates Acknowledgements Introduction 1. Baton Wicks Publications The Uncrowned King of Mont Blanc: The life of T.
Book SynopsisShortlisted for the Boardman Tasker Award for Mountain Literature. The Uncrowned King of Mont Blanc by Peter Foster is the biography of scientist and mountaineer Thomas Graham Brown, whose encyclopaedic knowledge of the mountain earned him the soubriquet, and whose achievements in the Alps and Greater Ranges place him at the forefront of British mountaineering between the two world wars.Born in Edinburgh in 1882, Graham Brown first pursued a career in the sciences as a physiologist – his exacting father demanding the highest standards – and the results of his research, largely unrecognised at the time, now underpin current understanding of the nervous control of movement in animals and man. His mountaineering career began in earnest after the First World War. From rock climbing in the Lake District he progressed to guided climbs in the Alps, where in 1927 he was fatefully introduced to Frank Smythe with whom he made the groundbreaking first ascents of the Sentinelle Rouge and the Route Major on the Brenva Face of Mont Blanc. This resulted in an obsession with the mountain and a feud between the pair that smouldered and flared for twenty years.Ambitious, determined and uncompromising in his views, he never left others feeling neutral: Geoffrey Winthrop Young thought him ‘a vicious lunatic’, yet Charles Houston felt closer to Graham Brown ‘than almost anyone else I know’. Graham Brown’s life was one of turbulence in his career, relationships and in the mountains, whether on expeditions to Mount Foraker, Nanda Devi and Masherbrum, or most frequently, the Alps.Peter Foster has drawn upon diaries, letters and extensive archival research that illuminate the highs and lows of Graham Brown’s scientific and climbing careers, and explores the imbalance between the significance of his achievements and the lack of recognition he received. But, above all, The Uncrowned King of Mont Blanc allows one to hear Graham Brown’s voice: querulous, opinionated and, to the discomfort of his many adversaries, almost always right.Table of ContentsForeword by Lindsay Griffin. Columbia University Press Albert O. Hirschman
Book SynopsisIn this intellectual biography, the economic historian Michele Alacevich explores the development and trajectory of Albert O. Hirschman’s approach to social-scientific questions. He traces the many strands of Hirschman’s thought and their place in his multifaceted body of work, considering their limitations as well as their strengths.Trade ReviewThe quietly vibrant and open-minded scholarship of Albert O. Hirschman, a mix of modesty and assertiveness about political economy, demography, the history of ideas, democracy and social movements, and analytical theory, deserves this book’s bracing critical engagement. With a sympathetic yet tough-minded disposition, Michele Alacevich thoughtfully assesses the innovative and often inspiring achievements of Hirschman’s field-stretching writings, as well as their lacunae and occasional overstatement. In so doing, his keen appraisal captures not just the range, depth, and verve of the writing but also the urgency of Hirschman’s quest for grounded reform across a considerable range of geography and historical circumstances with an unremitting sense of realism. -- Ira Katznelson, author of Fear Itself: The New Deal and the Origins of Our TimeThis wonderful book offers new insights on a giant of the social sciences. Alacevich places Hirschman’s work in intellectual context and traces its long arc of influence to our day. The book sheds new light not just on Hirschman’s scholarship but also his iconoclasm, deliberate provocativeness, often frustrating focus on the particular rather than the general, and ‘propensity for self-subversion.’ It therefore helps us understand the sharp contrast between the brilliance of Hirschman’s contributions and his outsider status in the academic disciplines he inhabited or trespassed in. -- Dani Rodrik, author of Straight Talk on Trade: Ideas for a Sane World EconomyA superb examination of the vast legacy of a major 20th-century thinker. * Kirkus Reviews (starred) *As a historian, biographer Adelman was less attuned to Hirschman’s subsequent career as an economic theorist – of development, democracy, capitalism, and commitment. Alacevich has provided a perfect complement, a study of the works and life of the author of the classic, Exit, Voice, and Loyalty. -- David Warsh * Economic Principles *The book serves as an excellent introduction and exegesis, yet also situates each episode of Hirschman’s career within a broader, life-long stream of investigation. * Boston Review *A most valuable introduction to the evolution and character of Hirschman’s theories, innovations, and insights. * Society *Fortunately, with Alacevich as our guide, Hirschman is here to teach us how to navigate responsibly a world that will forever surprise and even confound us. * International Affairs *The book is written in a very accessible style and complex debates long gone by are succinctly summarized and understandable for a non-technical readership. * OEconomia *The writing is clear, sharp, and precise. * History of Political Economy *Those interested in the trajectory of Hirschman’s contributions to the field of economics will benefit from this lucid and cogent account. -- Sumit Ganguly * Foreign Policy *Extremely well written, informative and simply a pleasure to read. * History of Economic Ideas *Table of ContentsPreface1. University of Illinois Press Franklin D. Roosevelt The War Years 19391945
Book SynopsisHaving guided the nation through the worst economic crisis in its history, Franklin Delano Roosevelt by 1939 was turning his attention to a world on the brink of war. The second part of Roger Daniels's biography focuses on FDR's growing mastery in foreign affairs. Relying on FDR's own words to the American people and eyewitness accounts of the man and his accomplishments, Daniels reveals a chief executive orchestrating an immense wartime effort. Roosevelt had effective command of military and diplomatic information and unprecedented power over strategic military and diplomatic affairs. He simultaneously created an arsenal of democracy that armed the Allies while inventing the United Nations intended to ensure a lasting postwar peace. FDR achieved these aims while expanding general prosperity, limiting inflation, and continuing liberal reform despite an increasingly conservative and often hostile Congress. University of Notre Dame Press Colin Powell
Book SynopsisThis fascinating biography of the late Colin Powell brings to light his towering achievements and errors in judgment during a lifetime devoted to public service.Until he passed away in 2021, Colin Powell was revered as one of America's most trusted and admired leaders. This biography demonstrates that Powell's decades-long development as an exemplary subordinate is crucial to understanding his astonishing rise from a working-class immigrant neighborhood to the highest echelons of military and political power, including his roles as the country's first Black national security advisor, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and secretary of state.Once an aimless, ambitionless teenager who barely graduated from college, Powell became an extraordinarily effective and staunchly loyal subordinate to many powerful superiors who, in turn, helped to advance his career. By the time Powell became chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, he had developed into the consummate fTrade Review“This work should be read by all national security professionals, uniformed service members, or any other governmental agency including the department of state and the intelligence community.” —The Strategy Bridge"This is no hagiography. Consisting of equal parts admiration and critical scrutiny, it is a tough and insightful portrayal of a commanding personality who was capable of both towering professional achievements and astonishing failures of judgment and ethics. Beyond pure biography, Matthews has produced a fascinating case study of the human elements of public service and leadership.” —Malcolm Byrne, deputy director, National Security Archive"Jeffrey Matthews's excellent biography rightly praises Colin Powell's distinguished service over the past half-century, while also delineating how Powell faltered at crucial moments while serving as George W. Bush's secretary of state. This is a comprehensive and compelling analysis." —Walter LaFeber, the Andrew and James Tisch University Professor Emeritus, Cornell University"At its base is a very well-written story about Colin Powell as fallible everyman. It is an almost existential portrait of the human condition. We all make choices every day; some are good, but some are grave errors in judgment that can have disastrous consequences for a family or for a nation. In my opinion, this book is the most important of the publications focusing on this turbulent period of American political and military history." —Howard Ball, author of Bush, the Detainees, and the Constitution"This work . . . covers the lofty career of Powell, who eventually became chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and Secretary of State. The author highlights both the successes and failures of his subject, revealing a human being navigating the complexities of leadership and power at the highest levels. It showcases the difficulties and consequences of decision making at the strategic level." —Military Heritage"Colin Powell was a good soldier all his life. Trustworthy, loyal, he obeyed orders while exercising a measure of judgment and initiative within the scope of his authority. . . . Powell’s judgment and initiative went only so far, Jeffrey Matthews writes in his biography. . . . Matthews examines Powell’s formative experience and finds the key to his success as well as his limitations." —Shepherd Express"The consummate general, national security advisor, Chairman of the Chiefs of Staff, Secretary of State and Patriot is profiled and on full display in Matthews’ work. Well-researched and full of rich detail, the book seems to be a balanced, albeit critical, review of Powell’s 40+ years of service. . . . Matthews makes note of Powell’s followership as an ‘assistant’ and ‘deputy’ in many of his duties throughout his career, contributing to why he was a great leader. Yet ultimately, even the best leaders make mistakes and are fallible, and we can all learn from that." —Brigadier General Chad Manske, Commandant of the National War College"A captivating and balanced story of Powell’s remarkable career, and of what we can learn from both his good and bad followership. . . . The book is of special interest to readers of military history, political biography, and leadership." —Northern Kentucky Tribune“Jeffrey Matthews . . . offers a well-constructed, well-written . . . biography of Colin Powell, who was born in 1937 and remained a popular public figure long after his retirement from government in 2005. . . . Powell comes alive in these pages.” —Law and Liberty“Jeffrey Matthews’ Colin Powell: Imperfect Patriot is a thorough biography of Powell. . . . Relying on government documents and first-hand accounts, including a four-hour interview with Powell, Matthews presents a chronological appraisal of Powell’s life that is comprehensively researched and readable.” —The VVAA VeteranTable of ContentsPreface Acknowledgements Introduction Part I – The Military Years 1.
