Multilingual Matters Transformative Translanguaging Espacios: Latinx

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisThis book contributes to the understanding of the transformative power of incorporating translanguaging, the dynamic language practices of bi/multilingual communities, in the schooling of US Latinx children and youth. It showcases instructional spaces in US education where Latinx children’s and youths’ translanguaging is at the center of their teaching and learning. By centering racialized Latinx bilingual students, including their knowledge systems and cultural and linguistic practices, it transforms the monolingual-white supremacy ideology of many educational spaces. In so doing, racialized bilingual Latinx subjectivities are potentially transformed, as students learn to understand processes of colonization and domination that have robbed them of opportunities to use their entire semiotic repertoire in learning. The book makes a strong theoretical contribution to the field, putting decolonial, post-structuralist understandings of language and bilingualism alongside critical race theory and critical pedagogy.Trade ReviewThis important and inspirational volume brings hope and justice to K-12 schools. It deepens the understanding of translanguaging pedagogies towards transformative translanguaging spaces for bilingual students. The book rompe fronteras y muros sin miedo and stays true to the academic, linguistic, and political origins and purposes of the translanguaging movement in the field. * Juan A. Freire, Brigham Young University, USA *Transformative Translanguaging Espacios reminds us that Latinx communities must insist on politicizing our translanguaging practices on our own terms, and reject decades of politicization experienced via reductive and harmful language policies and practices. The authors – scholars and maestrxs – inspire us to move forward with the political and radical spirit of translanguaging scholarship toward consequential learning possibilities, y sin miedo! * Danny C. Martinez University of California, Davis, USA *A counternarrative to dominant conceptualizations of bilingualism that pathologize the complex and dynamic language practices of racialized bi/multilingual communities, Transformative Translanguaging Espacios centers the perspective of language as performed by diverse Latinx bilingual students and their teachers. The editors and authors clearly and cogently articulate the affordances of translanguaging pedagogy as a transformative tool for anti-racist work in education in this accessible, engaging, and thought-provoking volume. * Mileidis Gort, University of Colorado Boulder, USA *This edited volume helps hone translanguaging as a theory of language use by documenting and delineating its transformative potential. Furthermore, it makes an important contribution to teaching practice by looking at how translanguaging pedagogies can create and sustain humanizing and just classrooms. -- Mark B. Pacheco, University of Florida, USA * Language and Education, 2022 *...this is an excellent state-of-the-art edition that synergizes the various works of passionate and dedicated scholars, teachers, and school administrators. I highly recommend this book to scholars in Bilingual Education, doctoral students, bilingual educators, and, most importantly, school administrators across the country. -- Kevin Perez, New York University, USA * Journal of Language, Identity & Education, 2022 *Table of ContentsAgradecimientos Contributors Nelson Flores: Foreword: The Transformative Possibilities of Translanguaging Maite T. Book SynopsisAt a time of increasing doubts about political legitimacy, concern for equal and inclusive democratic processes and deliberation is sweeping the social sciences. In this empirical study, the author presents the collective practices of political translation, which help multilingual and culturally diverse groups work together more democratically.Trade Review'For decades, those of us intensely interested in the inequalities that typically arise in social movements despaired of finding ways to counter those inequalities - of class, gender, race, and language. Now, in a breakthrough analysis, Nicole Doerr shows how the techniques of political translation can right many of the inegalitarian wrongs that typically flow from an open participatory setting. In a series of closely observed and well-analyzed cases, Doerr shows how social movement activists evolved these techniques and used them effectively. A must-read for anyone interested in social movements or (an unusual juxtaposition) deliberative democratic theory.' Jane Mansbridge, Charles F. Adams Professor of Political Leadership and Democratic Values, Harvard University'Rich in empirical evidence and original in its theoretical approach, this book discusses challenges and opportunities for the discursive quality of democracy in culturally diverse forums. Book SynopsisAt a time when the legitimacy of democracies is in question, calls to improve the quality of public debate and deliberative democracy are sweeping the social sciences. Yet, real deliberation lies far from the deliberative ideal. Theorists have argued that linguistic and cultural differences foster inequality and impede democratic deliberation. In this empirical study, the author presents the collective practices of political translation, which help multilingual and culturally diverse groups work together more democratically than homogeneous groups. Political translation, distinct from linguistic translation, is a set of disruptive and communicative practices developed by activists and grassroots community organizers in order to address inequities hindering democratic deliberation and to entreat powerful groups to work together more inclusively with disempowered groups. Based on ten years of fieldwork, Political Translation provides the first systematic comparative study of deliberationTrade Review'For decades, those of us intensely interested in the inequalities that typically arise in social movements despaired of finding ways to counter those inequalities - of class, gender, race, and language. Book SynopsisUnderstanding the role of language within the formation of a sense of self has been revolutionised by developments in social theory, particularly poststructuralism. There is now a new emphasis on the way in which subjects are vulnerable in the face of powerful discourses such as nation, gender, race and sexuality. This book is a clear and engaging introduction to these developments and their relevance to students of language. Using lively and often personal examples throughout, Tim McNamara explores the role of language within processes of subjectivity using the insights of conversation analysis (CA), creating an original conceptual and methodological bridge between the macro- and micro-dimensions of social discourse and everyday conversational interaction.Trade Review'This is a book that applied linguists – those new to the field and those who have been around a while and think they know all this stuff – should read and talk about. … [It] takes us on an intellectual ride through many domains while urging us to think politically, to engage with the local operations of language, and to act as applied linguists. I'm not sure what has been planned for the rest of this series, but this sets the bar high.' Alastair Pennycook, Language in Society'Tim McNamara offers interesting and engaging insights into the construction of subjectivities in various discourses, and the role of language in the formation of understanding self … this book constitutes an essential thinking tool for scholars and students who want to explore further our construction of identity through language.' Book SynopsisLanguages around the world organize their lexicons, or vocabularies, in a myriad of different ways. This book is a celebration of global linguistic diversity, bringing together fascinating cases from a wide range of languages to explore how and why this lexical variation occurs. Each of the thirty-six short chapters shows how different culturally-specific words, relating to a range of phenomena such as kinship, colour, space, time, objects, smells, and animals, vary across languages and geographical locations. It also explains the mechanisms of development in vocabularies, showing why this variation occurs, and how languages and cultures interact, to deepen the reader''s understanding of one of the most important aspects of linguistics. Assuming little to no prior knowledge of linguistics, and introducing concepts in an accessible way, this book is an entertaining, informative read for anyone who wants to learn more about the incredible variation and diversity of the human lexicon.Table of ContentsIntroduction; Part I. Book SynopsisThis book focuses on the cultural influences of bilingualism, as well as global perspectives, and the advantages and disadvantages of being bilingual. Chapter One discusses the Letter of Aristeas. Chapter Two discusses various aspects bridging the issues of culture implementation during a planned school course of English as a global language (EGL). Chapter Three discusses the future direction of studies related to the application of the testing effect and retrieval practice in foreign language learning. Chapter Four reports findings from a study that examined whether there would be significant differences on oral narrative retelling among kindergarten, first, and second grade Spanish-English bilingual children in U.S. schools. Chapter Five highlights some of the issues related to the concept and practice of translanguaging as proposed by Baker (2011) and García (2012) within the broader context of language contact. Chapter Six records the bilingual immigrant students views on their L1 development and use and their attitudes towards home language and culture; and the majority students views on the linguistic and cultural identities of their immigrant classmates. Chapter Seven ivestigates the association between levels of language proficiency and levels of bilingualism and performance on verbal and visual-spatial working memory tasks in young monolinguals and bilinguals 9-year old children in South Africa. Chapter Eight analyzes the grammar knowledge and use of second-generation Spanish/English bilinguals in South Florida. The final chapter reviews recent studies on extensive reading focusing on EFL settings such as Japan and China.

  • Setting Signs for Europe: Why Diacritics Matter

ibidem-Verlag, Jessica Haunschild u Christian Schon Setting Signs for Europe: Why Diacritics Matter

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisMore than 20 years have passed since the introduction of the Universal Character Set. However, legacy applications still cannot even render German umlauts correctly. Part of this problem is a hidden political agenda: Consciously or unconsciously, patterns of the Cold War are continued in the interaction between Western and Eastern European languages. This book examines the current use of diacritical marks in Western Europe, such as the use of names from Slavic languages in electronic data processing systems. The role of the media as multiplier receives particular attention, with most error examples taken from actual media coverage. Considering international, EU, and national law and referring to landmark court decisions, Kappenberg answers the question: 'Is there a right to diacritical marks in people's names?' This is followed by a description of current practice in several European countries. Finally, Setting Signs for Europe answers the question how in the framework of the EU's multilingualism policy, effective approaches can be created to raise awareness among software vendors, the media, government agencies, and individuals regarding the correct handling of diacritics. Kappenberg also assesses the use of diacritics as a style element and offers an improved input method for diacritics.

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisNon-linguistic conflicts - economic, religious, territorial - are often projected on to language differences, and may be played out in the language policies of governments and other holders of power. Jean-Louis Calvet deals broadly, in a non-technical and introductory style, with this interaction of language issues and political process. He examines the fundamental problems arising from language contact, multilingualism, and the conflicts caused by inequalities symbolized in various patterns of language use. The author draws extensively on his own research and uses numerous case studies to illustrate the power-political dimensions of language policies from many parts of the world, such as Africa, China, South America, the former Soviet Union, and Europe. He cites the former Soviet Union as a prime example of an attempt to impose, for ideological reasons, a supra-national vehicular language, in order to supersede the languages of regional nationalism. Professor Calvet offers no simple solutions to the `war of languages'' but urges all those involved in language intervention - from the professional `language planners'' to school teachers - to combine the need to promote majority languages with respect for the diversity of local languages and language varieties.Trade ReviewNontechnical and interesting, it is addressed to nonspecialists and is recommended for all academic and public collections. * G. Book SynopsisThis book describes dialect differences in American English and their impact on education and everyday life. It explores some of the major issues that confront educational practitioners and suggests what practitioners can do to recognize students’ language abilities, support their language development, and expand their knowledge about dialects. Topics addressed include:*popular concerns about the nature of language variation;*characteristic structures of different dialects;*various interactive patterns characteristic of social groups;*the school impacts of dialect differences in speaking, writing, and reading, including questions about teaching Standard English; and*the value of dialect education in schools to enable students to understand dialects as natural and normal language phenomena. Changes in the Second Edition: In this edition the authors reconsider and expand their discussion of many of the issues addressed in the first ediTrade Review"Because teaching and learning occur through language, teachers need a broad understanding of language variation and how it affects curriculum, instruction, and assessment. Wolfram, Adger, and Christian have made knowledge about language variation accessible and provide tools for teachers to use in gaining a deeper understanding of the languages and cultures their own students. Teachers who care about educational equity and diversity will find the book important to their work."—David BloomeOhio State University"There are still widespread myths and negative attitudes about dialect variations in student language. This second edition of an already classic text can help all students become confidently bi-dialectal but only if all teachers, coaches, and professional developers—across the curriculum—take its conceptual messages to heart, and take its beautifully-designed exercises into all classrooms and workshops."—Courtney CazdenHarvard University“This is a terrific book for both pre-service and in-service teacher education. The authors clearly illustrate dialect differences at all linguistic levels, from pronunciation to grammar to vocabulary, and they also analyze the linguistic and cultural implications of these differences for teaching and assessing speaking, reading, and writing in academic English.
