  • The Divine Struggle: Divine - Cosmic - Human

Peter Lang GmbH The Divine Struggle: Divine - Cosmic - Human

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisThe book of Jeremiah presents the biblical story of the divine - cosmic - human relationship with a special focus on its divine dimension. Yahweh, who loves his people passionately and longs to be loved by them, undergoes an inner struggle since his expectations go unfulfilled. The disloyalty of his chosen people and their defiling of his precious land grieve him to the heart. Justice demands punishment, but the very thought of punishing his people is painful to him. Even when he allows the judgement to take its course, he suffers with his people and with nature which also bears the consequences of sin and judgement. Jer 9 articulates this divine agony in Yahweh's own words. The text offers great challenges to us in the age of globalisation and ecological crises.Table of ContentsContents: Literary Analysis - Delimitation - Translation - Literary Forms: Literary Context of Jer 9 - Structure of Jer 9 - Interpretation - Divine Struggle - Theological Explanation - Communal Lament - Ultimate Solution - Contextual Study - The Passionate God of Jeremiah - The Indian Perspective - Our Global Village.

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisAlthough the prominence of Matthew's anti-Jewish polemic has been widely recognized in recent years, curiously little attention has thus far been given to the contribution made by chapters 11 and 12 to this theme. Often dismissed as a loose compendium of controversy-stories, this narrative section actually displays a solid, thematic unity dealing with the tragic fact of Jesus'rejection by the covenant people, Israel. Matthew's usually thoughtful style is evident in these chapters as he proceeds in a quite independent manner to clarify the unexpectedly humble nature of the messianic mission, the consequences of its rejection and the identity of the true people of God.Table of ContentsContents: The Drama of the Matthean Gospel - The Rejection of Salvation (Mt 11:1-24) - God's Mercy in Jesus (Mt 11:25-12: 21) - Israel's Rejection Revisited (Mt 12:22-45) - The True Messianic Community (Mt 12:46-50).

  • Peeters Publishers Essays on the Diatessaron

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisThe plurality of Gospel traditions constituted one of the perplexing phenomena of early Christian history. Little wonder that many attempted to explain the differences away. Gospel Harmonies were meant to demonstrate the factual unity of early Jesus traditions. Tatian has to his name one of the earliest harmonies, probably the most successful example: the so-called Diatessaron. Of this work, only indirect traces remain. This fact has made the reconstruction of Tatian's harmony one of the classic challenges for students of early Christian traditions. The present volume is a collection of studies about the quest for a lost book, a book that has been missing for over 1500 years now. It hasn't vanished, however, without a trace. We do not only know for sure that a Christian convert, called Tatian, wrote a Gospel Harmony in Rome around 172, ample indirect evidence of its existence is still available: a library of Gospel Harmonies, commentaries and translations full of probable or possible vestiges of its structure and contents. We know the title of the book - Diatessaron - and why it was written - to compose one homogeneous Gospel Harmony in the early centuries of Christianity, not only because the idea of one Gospel was attractive to many, but also because it was a quite intelligent composition. One can easily see why the Diatessaron could become a model for other attempts to construct a Gospel Harmony in later days.

  • Peeters Publishers The Knowledge of Christ Jesus My Lord: High

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisEmploying the traditional tools of historical-critical methodology as well as a selected mix of techniques from newer literary criticism, this book provides a close analysis of the syntactic and semantic content of Phil 3:7-11 in its immediate and broader context, concluding that this passage represents a very high christological statement on the part of Paul, and discusses some of the implications of these findings in regard to the interpretation of Phil 2:5-11, the wisdom ambience of the letters of Paul, and relevance for modern christologies. In Philippians 3:7-11, Paul makes a very strong statement about how much Christ Jesus means to him. This study seeks to demonstrate how the passage within its context gives expression to a high christological statement which is frequently disregarded in treatments of Pauline christology. Chapter One presents a concise summary of the history of exegesis of Phil 3:7-11 and identifies the elements present within that history which indicated the desirability of a more in-depth treatment. Chapter Two focuses on the entire letter to the Philippians as the context of interpretation of Phil 3:7-11, beginning with a discussion of the methodology employed in the remainder of the work. Chapter Three focuses on Phil 3:7-11, first considering the textual variants within these verses, then describing in detail the relation of the complex sentence consisting of vv. 8-11. Chapters Four and Five deal with those issues of semantics in vv. 8-11 which require more extensive treatment. Chapter Six returns to a consideration of the meaning of knowledge of Christ, concluding with a consideration of the results of this study for current discussions of New Testament Christology.

  • Peeters Publishers Ancient Rhetorical Theory and Paul

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis new edition of Anderson's Ancient Rhetorical Theory and Paul is the result of a considerable reworking and bringing up-to-date of many aspects of the original book. Anderson, after giving a brief critical introduction to the rhetorical approach generally, focuses upon the application of ancient rhetorical theory to the letters of the apostle Paul, paying particular attention to questions of methodology. He provides an extensive review of the sources of ancient rhetorical theory which may be considered most relevant to a Greek speaker of the first century AD such as Paul, carefully distinguishing between philosophical and school rhetorical theory. Having determined which aspects of ancient rhetorical theory may be most suitable in respect of Paul's letters, Anderson goes to examine the letters to the Galatians, the Romans, and the first letter to the Corinthians. In each case a critical assessment of recent literature concerning the application of ancient rhetorical theory to these letters is given. In addition, an enlightening rhetorical analysis of the doctrinal portions of the letters to the Galatians and Romans is provided from the perspective of contemporary rhetorical theory. Anderson approaches his analysis in terms of how a contemporary professor of rhetoric may have looked at Paul's letters. The study concludes by addressing difficult questions concerning the relationship of Paul's style and argumentation to rhetorical theory and the likelihood of his conscious use of such theory, as well as the overall value of an ancient rhetorical approach to Paul's letters.

  • The Unity of Luke - Acts

Peeters Publishers The Unity of Luke - Acts

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis volume contains the papers presented at the 47th Colloquium Biblicum Lovaniense (Leuven, 1998). The general theme of the meeting was the unity of the Gospel of Luke and the Acts of the Apostles. Main papers on this topic were read by R.L. Brawley, J. Delobel, A. Denaux, J.A. Fitzmeyer, F.W. Horn, J. Kremer, A. Lindemann, O. Mainville, D. Marguerat, F. Neirynck, W. Radl, M. Rese, J. Taylor, C.M. Tuckett, and J. Verheyden. While a large majority of scholars agree that Luke intended his work to cover both the past and the continuing history of Jesus (Gospel and Acts), the essays also illustrate the complexities of this view on the unity of Luke-Acts when it comes to interpret the various aspects of Lukan theology, christology, pneumatology, and ecclesiology, the expansion of the Church in light of its Jewish origins, the genre of Luke-Acts, and the literary and stylistic means Luke used to make his work a unity. In total the volume includes some 40 papers, of which 24 are offered papers: L. Alexander, H. Baarlink, M. Bachmann, D. Bechard, T.L. Brodie, G.P. Carras, A. del Agua, C. Focant, G. Geiger, B.J. Koet, V. Koperski, D.P. Moessner, G. Oegema, J. Pichler, E. Plumacher, A. Puig i Tarrech, U. Schmid, B. Schwank, N. Taylor, P.J. Tomson, S. Van den Eynde, S. Walton, G. Wasserberg, F. Wilk. This collection is an invaluable contribution to current discussions in Lukan study and to a nuanced understanding of the relationship between Luke's two volumes.

Book SynopsisThe Historical Commentary on the Old Testament is an international series of commentaries which devotes explicit attention to the history of interpretation of biblical tradition in all its stages, both within and without the Hebrew canon. As the term 'Old Testament' indicates, the commentary stands in the Christian exegetical tradition. The team of those who committed themselves to contribute comprises scholars from all over the world and from many different churches and denominations. The commentary is intended not only for Old Testament scholars, but also for ministers and other interested parties. The treatment of every pericope is preceded by a new translation and a section called 'Essentials and Perspectives' in which the author summarizes the results of the exegesis in non-technical language. The primacy here is assigned to the final stage of the text. The summary should incite the user to consult the main body of the exegesis which is headed 'Scholary Expositon'. Here the approach is that of modern critical scholarship.

    3 in stock

Book SynopsisThe Apocryphal Acts of Andrew' is the first modern collection of studies on the most important aspects of the Acts of Andrew, an early Christian kind of novel, which has only partially been preserved in Greek, Latin and Coptic. In addition to a thorough discussion of its date and place of origin, the collection of essays discusses many aspects of the Acts of Andrew, such as its interest in magic, martyrdom and the place of the devil, its preoccupation with scatology, and its interest in eroticism. It looks at its relationship with Poimandres, with the pagan novels and with other Christian writings, in particular the Acts of John and the Acts of Andrew and Mathias. Much attention is paid to spiritual climate of the Acts of Andrew and its connections with Platonism and gnosticism. Finally, it analyses the Armenian translation, which is shown to be an important witness to the original text.

  • Peeters Publishers Echoes of Eden: Genesis 2-3 and Symbolism of the

    3 in stock

Book SynopsisEchoes of Eden attempts to establish what is called a comprehensive perspective on the Story of Eden. This includes, first, an investigation into the symbolic significance of a garden to an ancient Hebrew audience, considering actual garden constructions from the ancient Near East as well as text and figures of speech relating to the garden subject. Secondly, the book engages in a historical literary analysis of the Eden Story. It is argued that the passage derives from the Early Persian era, that it is a tightly knit literary unit, and that it extends a rather ambiguous argument on human nature. By way of a "comprehensive perspective", other biblical passages making reference to Eden are also considered. Found in a number of similes, metaphors, alegories, these passages seem to presuppose knowledge of an Eden (Story) similar to the one in Genesis 2-3. In this material emerges an impression as to what Eden "meant" to a biblical audience in Persian Age. Apparently - and quite in harmony with the picture in Genesis 2-3 - such an audience imagined a "primeval Eden" outside space and time. They did, however, also perceive several echoes of that Eden in their everyday world. Presuming this as the communicative competence in the audience, the book concludes by hinting at the significance of the Eden Garden to its implied readers. Dr. Terje Stordalen (born 1958) is Associate Professor at the Norwegian Lutheran School of Theology, Oslo.
