Book SynopsisThe celebration of Washington D.C. basketball is long overdue. The D.C. metro area stands second to none in its contributions to the game. Countless figures who have had a significant impact on the sport over the years have roots in the region, including E.B. Henderson, the first African-American certified to teach public school physical education, and Earl Lloyd, the first African-American to take the court in an actual NBA game. The city's Spingarn High School produced two players – Elgin Baylor and Dave Bing – recognized among the NBA’s 50 greatest at the League’s 50th anniversary celebration. No other high school in the country can make that claim. These figures and many others are chronicled in this book, the first-ever comprehensive look at the great high school players, teams and coaches in the D.C. metropolitan area. Based on more than 150 interviews, The Capital of Basketball is first and foremost a book about basketball. But in discussing the trends and evolution of the game, McNamara also uncovers the turmoil in the lives of the players and area residents as they dealt with prejudice, educational inequities, politics, and the ways the area has changed through the years.Trade ReviewThe finished product is a great basketball book, filled with details of big games, powerful high school basketball programs and insightful stories about the top players and coaches who, at least at one time, called Washington home. The chronicle begins in 1900, when a local newspaper first mentioned a high school basketball game, and continues through the 1990s, when DeMatha High School was dominant. * New York Times *[This book] comes alive when it captures the culture of basketball, the social significance of the sport beyond the box scores. * Washington Post *It’s a story of civil rights heroes and NBA legends. It’s [more than 300] pages of history few others could have accomplished, but John, who was born in Washington and never left the area, dedicated his life to it. * Washington Post *[The book] is a meticulous history of the players and coaches that defined DC area basketball, broken down by the decade. Anecdotes and line scores are preserved for posterity, chronicled in painstaking detail, thanks to more than 150 interviews and countless hours of research. While the writing showcases the kind of granular attention to detail that would appeal to any sports fan, it’s also an impressive historical text that demonstrates how basketball’s influence stretched beyond the simple happenings on the hardwood, helping the city contextualize the broader societal changes taking place. -- Noah Frank * WTOP.com *McNamara gives light to well-known high school coaches such as Morgan Wootten (DeMatha), Joe Gallagher (St. John’s) and Bob Dwyer (Carroll), but also highlights coaches such as Cardozo High’s Frank Bolden, whose teams won back-to-back city titles in 1957 and 1958...There are dozens of other players and coaches and teams, some known, many not, who get their moment in the sun because McNamara was such an encyclopedic student of the game he loved. -- David Aldridge * The Athletic *The book hits all the boldface names that define hoops in Washington DC at every level—from Red Auerbach to ... Kevin Durant—but its passion is reserved for the hidden figures. The world beyond the district may not know ... how basketball played a crucial role in integrating DC thanks to E.B. Henderson, a trailblazer player and coach who wasn't allowed to coach white students at the turn of the century, yet his activism ultimately proved instrumental in the founding of the NAACP. -- Gabe Lacques * USA Today *I just finished reading The Capital of Basketball and thoroughly enjoyed it. It brought back such great memories. It is a fine social history as well as an account of basketball in the DC area. I appreciate [it]. -- Father Edward "Monk" Malloy, President Emeritus, University of Notre Dame, Archbishop Carroll High School class of 1959From the introduction of basketball in the city by lesser-known figures like E.B. Henderson to Morgan Wootten’s DeMatha dynasty to Montrose Christian’s Kevin Durant, this book has everything you need to know to consider yourself well-informed on DC-area high school basketball. -- Matt Modderno * Wizards Xtra *John’s book is wonderfully reported and researched, as thorough a history of DC boys’ basketball as you’ll ever read. -- Christine Brennan * Washington Independent Review of Books *History is survival. And survival is politics—inequality persists in whose stories get told, get recorded, and get preserved. John McNamara did not survive a violent shooting in an all-too-often-violent country, but thanks to his work, a century’s worth of stories—of players and coaches, dynasties and underdogs, defeats and triumphs on and off the court—live on. * Washington Monthly *[The Capital of Basketball] offers a welcome look at the shifting sands of race in Washington, and the social legacies that great local players and coaches have left behind. * Washington History *Table of ContentsForeword by Gary Williams Preface One: The Pioneers: 1900-1950 Two: The Fifties Three: The Sixties Four: The Seventies Five: The Eighties Six: The Nineties Afterword by Andrea Chamblee Acknowledgments Appendix A: Map Appendix B: All-High, All-Catholic, All-Met, and All-Prep Compilation Photo Credits Index About the Author

Book SynopsisEqual parts photo-rich lookbook, and cultural commentary, Fly: The Big Book of Basketball Fashion is the story of the extraordinary intersection of high fashion and basketball, from the league's inception to today, and celebrates the iconic style of NBA athletes. Each chapter explores the style of an era and the cultural influences that shaped it: The league's inception in 1949, pre-Civil Rights Movement, when the NBA was mostly comprised of white players who wore suits and skinny ties. The years following the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the birth of funk and R&B when basketball fashion got flashier (think Walt "Clyde" Frazier and Wilt Chamberlain wearing fur coats and big hats). The Michael Jordan era of the 1980s and 1990s, with its oversize suits. The epic Iverson/Hip-Hop years of the late 1990s and early 2000s. And now to today, a time defined not only by social media and high fashion's birthing of the tunnel walk (think LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, and Russell Westbrook), but one in which athletes are idealized as style icons and activists, figures who inspire conversations beyond how they play and what they wear.Trade Review"A coffee-table book that elevates the subject to the same decorative status as a Dior or Gucci monograph"—The New York Times"A coffee-table book that elevates the subject to the same decorative status as a Dior or Gucci monograph."—The New York TimesMitchell S. To me, what he explores is the evergreen push to remind people that the talented are more than their talents. That there’s a burning creativity and a relentless desire to express oneself, not as a highlight but as a human.” —JASON REYNOLDS, #1 New York Times bestselling coauthor of Stamped“You cannot be a true enthusiast of sports or fashion if you don’t own a copy of this book. European designers are too often credited with the trends that spread around the world, and Jackson shows us that those designs are nothing without validation from the streets where many NBA athletes get their start. In this beautiful celebration of culture, he captures the role these athletes have played in style on a global scale.” —D. WATKINS, New York Times bestselling author of Where Tomorrows Aren’t Promised and Black Boy Smile“NBA fashion has evolved so much over the years. To see the various styles worn by players throughout the eras—all in one book—is cool. Now with social media and the game being so global, everyone sees everything. Book SynopsisIn the tradition of Blood in the Garden and Three-Ring Circus comes a bold history of the iconic UCLA Bruins championship teams led by legendary coach John Wooden, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and Bill Walton—set against the turmoil of American culture in the 1960s and ’70s. Few basketball dynasties have reigned supreme like the UCLA Bruins did over college basketball from 1965-1975 (seven consecutive titles, three perfect records, an eighty-eight-game winning streak that remains unmatched). At the center of this legendary franchise were the now-iconic players Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Bill Walton, naturally reserved personalities who became outspoken giants when it came to race and the Vietnam War. These generational talents were led by John Wooden, a conservative counterweight to his star players whose leadership skills would transcend the game after his retirement. But before the three of them became history, they would have to ma

Book SynopsisCalled for Traveling is a pro basketball journey that spans four continents, seven countries and twelve teams over eleven hilarious and adventurous years. After playing his college ball at Penn State, Tyler Smith had a path in mind of where he wanted his pro basketball career to lead. Bringing his own toilet paper to away games, courts made of concrete, and fully-geared riot police at every stadium were not part of his original dream. Where were all the big contracts people talked about? Would he even have a job next season—or next week? And would he be playing for free this month because the team didn’t feel like paying him?In this highly unstable and unorthodox overseas lifestyle as a professional basketball player, Smith draws readers in quickly with his humor and ability to share his clever stories that seem outrageous, but are 100 percent true. His attitude and faith are tested relentlessly through bounced paychecks, injuries, and the seemingly endless frustrating reality of people around him speaking a language he could not understand. From Italy to Japan to Uruguay, and even the NBA, the challenges and adventures only accelerate as Tyler’s wife and kids are added to the overseas equation. His unique story is highly engaging whether or not you’re a basketball junkie. Called for Traveling is an honest and entertaining inside look at one man’s journey playing pro basketball around the world.Trade Review"Extremely entertaining."--Hall of Fame forward Rick Barry “There are only a little more than 400 players in the NBA at any one time. For the rest of the talented players who come out of the college ranks, there's either the humdrum a real job or the chase for continued hoops glory in pro leagues all over the globe. All too often, the stories of those pursuing basketball careers in far-flung places go untold, though they are packed with as much grit, sacrifice, and hard work as those of NBA All-Stars—and often are every bit as gripping (and sometimes far more hilarious). Rick Telander, a photojournalist and former high school basketball player, spent part of the summer of 1973 and all of the summer of 1974 in Brooklyn living the playground life with his subjects at Foster Park in Flatbush. He slept on the floor of a park regular's apartment, observing, questioning, traveling, playing with, and eventually coaching a ragtag group of local teenagers whose hopes of better lives were often fanatically attached to the transcendent game itself. Telander introduces us to Fly Williams, a playground legend with incredible leaping ability and self-destructive tendencies that threatened to keep him earthbound. Another standout was Albert King, a fifteen-year-old phenom whose shy, quiet demeanour masked an otherworldly talent that eventually took him to the NBA. Book SynopsisSince its formation in 2010, 3x3 basketball’s popularity has rocketed. In only seven years, 3x3 basketball has gone from being played casually as a pick-up game to becoming an official Olympic sport, with the 2021 Summer Games showcasing its debut. 3x3 Basketball is the first-ever book to cover multiple aspects of this up-and-coming sport. In this book, author Luka Snoj comprehensively presents the differences between traditional basketball and 3x3 basketball and outlines the fundamental tactics and game structure, theory, terminology, as well as principles for successful play. The author also details the history of 3x3 basketball - why and how it was formed as well as how the sport has evolved over the years. He also describes the competition system, including how the rules have changed, and what teams have been successful over the past decade. In this section, Snoj weaves contemporary interviews with top players like Dusan Bulut - 3x3 basketball’s GOAT (four-time world champion) - to round out the narrative on a sport whose popularity will only continue to grow. Finally, Snoj provides both statistical and analytical analyses of the sport.

Book SynopsisTransnational Sport in the American West is the story of how a sport can cross physical and cultural borders. Catholic missionaries first brought the sport of basketball to southern Mexico in the early twentieth century, but over time the sport has grown into a cultural tradition in states like Oaxaca (Wa-hak-a). The ball bounced across the Mexico/U.S. border into Los Angeles, CA during the 1970s and pick-up games in the park eventually became organized tournaments. In 1977, an annual tournament called the Benito Juárez Cup was established in Guelatao, Oaxaca to celebrate the culture of basketball in the region and to honor former president of Mexico, Benito Juárez. Now, generations of youth from the U.S. travel to Oaxaca to play in the tournament. Follow the story of three youth who describe their culture and the significance the sport of basketball has played in their life. They have different experiences based on age, gender, skill, and birthplace but they all have one thing in common. Basketball is a part of them, and although the sport can be played many different ways, this is their game.Trade ReviewDr. Bernardo Ramirez Rios’ rich ethnography of Oaxacan basketball transports us from rural villages in Mexico to immigrant neighborhoods in the US. It captures the value and meaning of sport in the lives of the players and their families, and details the complex ways they negotiate transnational identities, indigeneity, and modernity. -- Jeffery H. Out of stock

Book SynopsisThis book analyzes career narratives of selected prominent NBA players after the Michael Jordan era, understood as the time after his second retirement in January 1999. It was a pivotal time for the league, as Jordan became synonymous with NBA basketball and the face of its global expansion. The players discussed in the book have been selected because of the significance of their career narratives, as all of them correspond with certain archetypes, prevalent in the world not only of professional basketball, but of professional sports in general. The private and public personas of eight players as well as their depiction by the media are analyzed not only regarding their success on the basketball court, but also in light of what they have come to represent for the modern NBA. The players discussed in this book are Shaquille O’Neal, Alonzo Mourning, Vin Baker, Allen Iverson, Antoine Walker, Steve Nash, Tim Duncan, and Kobe Bryant. Collectively, these eight players embody the distinguishing character profiles and career arcs of sports superstars with dominance, individualism, and athleticism being as much parts of sports star culture as egotism, injuries, boredom, addiction, and bankruptcy. Trade ReviewNarrating the NBA is an insightful and dynamic study of the NBA’s rich mythology, which traces the carer narratives of many of the league’s most iconic players. Dr. Muniowski effectively demonstrates how individual athletes are transformed into mythical figures by showing how these narratives inform players’ careers, lives, and legacies. By unpacking the archetypal associations of basketball’s biggest athlete-celebrities, he reveals the complex tension between sport biographies and biofictions. This is a fascinating read, for both sport scholars and fans of the game. -- Brittany Reid, Thompson Rivers UniversityThis is a fascinating collection of studies of the career narratives of nine leading NBA players, including Michael Jordan, Allen Iverson, and Kobe Bryant, each of them chosen because they represent archetypes that are prevalent not only in the world of professional basketball also in professional sport more generally. This book is both a labor of love and a highly significant contribution to academic debates about sports celebrity. It will also be read avidly by countless NBA fans from Chicago to Chongqing, Madrid to Manila. -- Alan Bairner, Loughborough UniversityTable of ContentsIntroductionChapter One. Book SynopsisBasketball 2.0 takes a riveting and inspirational look inside the rise of 3x3 basketball, which made its Olympic debut at Tokyo 2020, just a decade after launching as the official truncated version of arguably the world's second most popular sport. For generations, three-on-three was a popular form of pickup basketball but seen as a novelty until the governing body, FIBA, hatched an ambitious plan to broaden the sport's worldwide footprint and extend its fan base through a distinctive brand. But to achieve legitimacy, 3x3 needed to accomplish the improbable and go from the streets to the Olympics. Despite scepticism, FIBA created a professional tour and international competitions before its dream was realised when 3x3 became an Olympic sport for the Tokyo Games. FIBA is betting big on its new game, but even after 3x3's memorable Olympic debut, the question remains: will it truly succeed? Basketball 2.0 is the first in-depth exploration of this fascinating and quirky new global game.
