University of Tennessee Press Full Court Press: How Pat Summitt, A High School
Book SynopsisWhen Victoria Cape moved to Oak Ridge, Tennessee, in the early 1970s, she had no idea that her desire to play basketball would change the game for women and the sport in Tennessee. Encouraged to sign up for basketball by her athletic father, Victoria was in for a shock: the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association endorsed an entirely different form of the game for high school women than the version of basketball commonly played around the country. Women played six-on-six basketball, in which offensive players stayed on one half of the court, and defensive players on the other half—defenders could spend their entire careers without taking a shot. Victoria Cape sued the TSSAA, and her lawsuit paved the way for women to play basketball by the same rules as men and served as an early test case of groundbreaking Title IX legislation. Further adding to the case’s history-making précis was the presence of a young Pat Summitt, recently elevated to head coach of the Tennessee Lady Volunteers, who bravely testified on behalf of Cape during the lawsuit.Full Court Press is a valuable addition to research on how individual initiative can bring about social change—in Tennessee, in the sporting world, and as a part of the broader struggle for women’s equality. Written in a lighthearted and inspiring style, this book is a must-read for anyone fascinated by the many achievements of Pat Summitt, Tennessee women’s basketball, or women’s sports history in general.

Rutgers University Press Lakota Hoops: Life and Basketball on Pine Ridge
Book SynopsisFor over 150 years the Lakota have tenaciously defended their culture and land against white miners, settlers, missionaries, and the U.S. Army, and paid the price. Their economy is in shambles and they face serious social issues, but their culture and outlook remain vibrant. Basketball has a role to play in the way that people on Pine Ridge Indian Reservation configure their hopes for a better future, and for pride in their community. In Lakota Hoops, anthropologist Alan Klein trains his experienced eye on the ways that Lakota traditions find a seamless expression in the sport. In a variety of way such as weaving time-honored religious practices into the game or extending the warrior spirit of Crazy Horse to the players on the court, basketball has become a preferred way of finding continuity with the past. But the game is also well suited to the present and has become the largest regular gathering for all Lakota, promoting national pride as well as a venue for the community to creatively and aggressively confront white bigotry when needed. Richly researched and filled with interviews with Pine Ridge residents, including both male and female players, Lakota Hoops offers a compelling look at the highs and lows of a community that has made basketball its own.Trade Review"Basketball is so much more than just a game; it is a cultural resource that allows the Pine Ridge community to express their identity against a social landscape of poverty, racism, and domination. In Lakota Hoops, Klein provides an important statement about sport in Indian Country, sketching out the larger structural landscape in which the actions of some Lakota basketball players unfold. In learning about the individuals, we learn the logic behind their actions and how they interact with the larger context of ongoing US colonization of native lands." -- Jeffery Montez de Oca * author of Discipline and Indulgence *"I've long thought that Alan Klein might be the most important anthropologist of sport in our midst. Lakota Hoops confirms that. Unflinchingly honest, brilliantly argued, and gracefully written, it's a tour de force about sport, Lakota culture, and a reality this nation has yet to fully confront." -- Rob Ruck * Tropic of Football: The Long and Perilous Journey of Samoans to the NFL *Alan Klein interview with Ramon Maclin about Lakota Hoops * Alan Klein interview with Ramon Maclin *Basketball is so much more than just a game; it is a cultural resource that allows the Pine Ridge community to express their identity against a social landscape of poverty, racism, and domination. Coast to Coast
James Naismith, Holcombe Rucker, Luis Felipe López, Dorothy Gaters, Otis Re

Book SynopsisForged by the crucible of this family saga, Steve went on to chart an unparalleled life in basketball, on the court and on the sidelines. The only coach other than Red Auerbach to lead a team to the Finals five consecutive seasons, Kerr seems destined for the Basketball Hall of Fame.Trade Review"Thrilling. ... Casual fans and hoops nuts alike will love this illuminating work." — Publishers Weekly (starred review) "Riveting. ... Deftly recounted. ... Kerr's time with the Bulls comes alive in the author's telling. ... This engaging biography is a must-read for basketball fans." — Library Journal (starred review) "If Lou Gehrig were here, he might agree Steve Kerr is the luckiest man alive, as Steve often says. Because Steve's is a heck of a story and you could write a book about it. Oh, right. Scott Howard-Cooper did. And it's well told through Steve's personal triumphs and tragedy and triumph and triumph and triumph, all achieved and experienced with endearing humor and humility. You can't believe how he got there until you know how he did. And then you appreciate Steve even more and Scott for bringing the story to us." — SAM SMITH, New York Times Bestselling Author of The Jordan Rules “The Kerr story is an amazing one, and Scott Howard-Cooper has given us a fascinating look at a fascinating life. Kerr takes such a mirthful, ironic approach, filled with self deprecation, to so much of the business of competing, yet make no mistake. Underneath all of that is a hard-edged, driven competitor, burnished in many cases by disappointment and sorrow, yet possessed of immense wisdom and insight into the emotional lives of NBA players and coaches. Scott Howard-Cooper has captured brilliantly the mystery of all that. I must say I'm quite envious.” — ROLAND LAZENBY, author of Michael Jordan: The Life "Steve Kerr has lived an amazing life, with moments of great elation and immense pain. Scott Howard-Cooper has put together an important, well-researched book that reflects all the ups and downs of Kerr's journey through basketball and beyond, with keen insights as to what makes him a successful coach and a deeply admirable human being. You don't have to be a Warriors fan, or even a basketball fan, to enjoy this book." — SETH DAVIS, basketball reporter and author, CBS Sports and The Athletic "A compelling account that demands a place in any sports collection." — Booklist "[A] highly entertaining look at one of basketball’s most interesting people." — Plainview Herald "One of the few writers with the combination of juice and talent to make a project like this work. ... A comprehensive look at one of the most interesting men in professional sports today. ... A breezy, fast-moving read that—much like its titular namesake—makes the majority of its shots." — The Maine Edge

Not Stated The Real Hoosiers Crispus Attucks High School
Book SynopsisThe true story behind Crispus Attucks High School and the all-Black basketball team loosely depicted as the championship opponent in the beloved classic sports movie Hoosiers. For far too long the mythology of Indiana basketball has been dominated by Hoosiers. Framed as the ultimate underdog, feel-good story, there has also long been a cultural debate surrounding the film. The Real Hoosiers sets out to illuminate the narrative that the film omits, the story of the unheralded Crispus Attucks Tigers, playing the game at the highest level in the 1950s in a racially divided Indiana. After a crushing loss to Milan High School in the 1954 semifinal, which was the game that the final scenes in Hoosiers are based on, Attucks went on to win back-to-back Indiana state championships. That team was led by a young Oscar Robertson and coached by Ray Crowe, who fully recognized the seemingly insurmountable challenges of playing basketball in
