Rowman & Littlefield Publishers The Cooperstown Chronicles Baseballs Colorful

    10 in stock

Book SynopsisThe Cooperstown Chronicles is an entertaining look at the unusual lives, strange demises, and downright rowdy habits of some of the most colorful personalities in the history of baseball. Frank Russo goes beyond the stats and delves into each playerâs personality, his life outside of baseball, and even his final resting place.Trade ReviewRusso’s latest is a compendium of baseball odd lots, from drinkers to headhunting pitchers to suicides and more. The chapter on beer drinkers and hell-raisers includes a piece on Mickey Mantle’s sad demise and another on Silver Flint, a catcher for the pre-1900 Chicago White Stockings. Flint was a tough guy who in his career broke every finger and joint in both hands. He may have taken to drink to ease the pain, but it did him in. He died at 36 a week after his ex-wife found him drunk and living on the street. There are not a lot of happy endings in the book. There are 40 pages dealing with players and former players who committed suicide. But Russo . . . recounts highlights of his subjects’ careers, so there are some lighter moments, and there are great anecdotes from baseball history. [I]f there is a large, ravenous cadre of hyperserious baseball fans roaming the aisles (Walking Dead–style), this is the book for which they’ve been waiting. * Booklist *Russo. . . .celebrates the big personalities of baseball's past, listing some of the game's Golden Age rascals and their odd deaths. . . .The rowdy chapter on hell-raisers spotlights personalities like Terry Larkin, King Kelly, Bob Spade, Mickey Welsh, Rabbit Maranville, Casey Stengel, and Mickey Mantle, whose followers loved their antics both on and off the field. His section on pitchers, who threw at the batter's head despite the rules, rates some cringe-worthy alarm along with a chuckle or two over the acts of mound mayhem. . . .This book will be an odd curio for fans of the national pastime. * Publishers Weekly *A number of books dig through box scores and newspaper clippings to bring to light the oddities and weird tales of baseball, but Russo does a great job of digging past the others in The Cooperstown Chronicles, named after the location of the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum. Russo mentions a few Hall of Famers, but his writing shines when he discusses their lesser-known teammates. Baseball is full of legendary players, Babe Ruth for example, but recounting the lives of more obscure players provides a glimpse of a game filled with men who loved the sport in spite of their own imperfections. The author talks about the Mickey Mantles and Casey Stengels, but also about the player with 41 career at-bats who died tragically of tuberculosis. Some of the stories are dark and even end tragically but overall the book is a celebration of America’s pastime and is appropriate for young adults and above. VERDICT Fans of baseball, in particular baseball history, will enjoy this work for the multitude of players (various teams, various years) that are documented in its pages. * Library Journal *The Cooperstown Chronicles: Baseball’s Colorful Characters, Unusual Lives, and Strange Demises, expands on the basic premise of his website [thedeadballera.com] by presenting short, typically one- to- five- page, biographies of players from the late nineteenth century to the present time. Rather than focusing on the players’ individual accomplishments on the diamond, Russo situates the players within their historical context and attempts to reveal their personalities, problems, and life after baseball. Casual baseball fans will immediately recognize some of the players, such as Ty Cobb, Don Drysdale, Lefty Grove, and Casey Stengel . . .One of the strengths of Russo’s work is his encyclopedic knowledge of all eras of baseball; another is his particular interest in players from the deadball era (prior to 1920). . . .Cooperstown Chronicles: Baseball’s Colorful Characters, Unusual Lives, and Strange Demises is an informative, indeed entertaining volume that introduces the reader to the lives of baseball players, most of whom have been forgotten. The totality of the biographies reveals how baseball and players have changed and how the context has evolved. * Journal of Sport History *Frank Russo takes us where few dare to tread—and the result is fascinating. -- Marty Appel, author of Pinstripe Empire: The New York Yankees from Before the Babe to After the BossA labor of love, a mighty lode of fascinating anecdotes about all things baseball. Frank Russo has hit a grand slam home run. Most notable. -- Harvey Frommer, sports historian, journalist, and author of Remembering Yankee StadiumNo one knows baseball life—and death—as well as Frank Russo. From home plate to final resting place, The Cooperstown Chronicles delivers fascinating stories, from the game's greatest stars like Ty Cobb to cup-of-coffee player Brian Traxler, who was beloved by fans for his gregarious approach to the game. Discover how players lived and died in this fast-paced informative work. -- Kevin Kernan, New York Post columnistOnce again, Frank Russo employs his unique style of writing to tell the story of many of baseball's luminaries. We all know Ruth, Gehrig, Mantle and Seaver, but what about “Turkey Mike” Donlin or Rabbit Maranville? Some may think outlining how various ballplayers passed from this world is morbid; however, I see Frank as honoring our National Pastime. In an era where baseball has become more about hard cold numbers, it's nice to see a book that focuses on what the game is really about: people and the stories behind the numbers on the back of the baseball card. This is a must-read for anyone who is a fan of the game. -- Mike Silva, New York radio personalityTable of ContentsAcknowledgments Foreword Introduction Chapter 1: Bad to the Bone Chapter 2: Beer Drinkers and Hell Raisers Chapter 3: Consumed By Consumption Chapter 4: Head Hunters Chapter 5: Suicide Is Painless Chapter 6: Unnatural Causes Chapter 7: Final Out Conclusion Bibliography Index About the Author

Yet for a few years in the early 1930s, this unlikely spot was home to the Monarchs, a national-calibre Negro League baseball team. Book Synopsis“You don’t have to be a Yankees fan to love Yankee Miracles.”—Yogi BerraTrade Review"A compelling tale of redemption, of second chances, of unheralded gestures and of touching personal connections." -- New York Daily News"Much of sports can leave us skeptical if not cynical. But I defy anyone to read Ray Negron's remarkable story and not come away believing that there still can be genuine heart, soul, and even redemption in the games we watch and play." -- Bob Costas"Full of fondness and good memories, Negron’s affectionate memoir reveals that his love for the Yankees and his affection for Steinbrenner haven’t diminished over these many years." -- Publishers Weekly"Hard as it is to recommend yet another book about the Yankees—especially this bouquet by a longtime employee—it’s just as hard not to be touched by Negron’s story …Even avowed Yankee haters will be warmed by stories of Alex Rodriguez’s outreach to a local youth baseball team, Derek Jeter’s private chat with a young cancer patient in a corner of the Yankees clubhouse, and the gruff but heartfelt kindness Munson would extend to teammates, opposing players, and the young Negron." -- Booklist"With the assistance of Cook (co-author: Another Season: A Coach's Story of Raising an Exceptional Son, 1997, etc.), longtime New York Yankees employee Negron (One Last Time: Good-bye to Yankee Stadium, 2009, etc.) relates a series of heartwarming tales from his time with the storied franchise. The author, whose previous Yankee-related books have been aimed at children, here offers a biography that seems straight out of a 1930s movie. As a young troublemaker, he was caught spray-painting graffiti on Yankee Stadium by the team’s new owner, George Steinbrenner. Hours later, he found himself in uniform, shagging flies from his heroes as a batboy, a job that would lead to a lifetime working in baseball. Negron’s effort to show the kindhearted side of the notoriously prickly ‘Boss’ permeates this touching book. He joined the Yankee organization shortly after Steinbrenner’s purchase of the team, and he was there through the glory years of the 1970s, when the team included such icons as Thurman Munson, Reggie Jackson and Billy Martin. The author formed life-altering friendships with each of them, and he also features the triumphs and tragedies of other stars, including Mickey Mantle, Catfish Hunter, Dwight Gooden, Alex Rodriguez and Derek Jeter. Each chapter recounts a “miracle” from the author’s time with the team, and Negron provides ample insight into the real men behind the uniforms. Though he doesn’t hold back from showing their flaws, the lenses through which he views them are heavily rose-colored. A treasure-trove for sentimental Yankees fans and a feel-good read for all baseball fans." -- Kirkus Reviews"[Ray Negron’s] affectionate ode to the team and its former owner is a welcome salve to the Yankees’ often self-inflicted bruises." -- Sam Roberts - New York Times"Longtime Yankees advisor Negron's inside story of life with the team begins with what reads like an episode of Seinfeld." -- New York Post"An exciting new book by a New York Yankees insider... offers a unique, behind-the-scenes look at America’s most storied baseball franchise and the man they called “The Boss”—Yankees owner George Steinbrenner.... [A]uthor Ray Negron recounts an unlikely career in baseball that had a most unexpected beginning and reads like a modern day version of Angels with Dirty Faces.... Yankee Miracles features a series of heartwarming tales illustrating the power of baseball to transform lives." -- Jim Meyers - Newsmax"The most storied team in baseball history has a few tales that even the most die-hard Yankees fans might not know… [An] inspiring story." -- ReadKiddoRead.com

Book SynopsisVaught's deeply researched exploration of baseball's rural roots helps explain its enduring popularity.Trade ReviewThis highly readable book makes clear that rural baseball has always been every bit as central to the American experience as has its metropolitan counterpart. Choice The author has opened a window onto a rich area of exploration and understanding in rural history and into the complex relationships between Americans and baseball. -- Jim McCabe Association for Living History, Farm, and Agricultural Museums A refreshing and thoughtful addition to the history of baseball. -- September 2013, George Kirsch Journal of American History While baseball thrives on statistics, this book is an absorbing read not for the numbers... but for the social and historical issues it brings to the forefront. -- Bob D'Angelo The Tampa Tribune Vaught's book is a masterwork... What makes this book particularly noteworthy is the author's rich knowledge of America's agricultural past. That alone is worth the price of admission. -- Roger I. Abrams American Historical Review For those interested in baseball's place in local history, whether in rural or regional terms, this is an extraordinarily good book. -- Benjamin G. Rader Annals of Iowa A solidly researched and well-written piece of history, one that fills a large void in our understanding of baseball's significant role in American life, particularly away from the big city lights... Baseball enthusiasts should find this book of interest, and university instructors of U.S. cultural history courses could use chapters as supplementary reading. -- Thomas Saylor Minnesota History The Farmers' Game would enhance any academic library's sports history collection... The Farmers' Game can be group with the works of Jules Tygiel as clear-eyed analyses of how the sport and its historical context illuminate each other. -- Chistopher DeRosa New York History The Farmers' Game is a sympathetic yet straightforward account of a pastoral game. Periods of prosperity and famine have always come to farmers as regularly and unexpectedly as streaks have to batters, though the stakes are almost never as high for the player. For its pointing out the symmetry in those alternately joyful and grievous experiences, and for much else, we are indebted to David Vaught's excellent book. -- Chris Beneke Journal of Southern History A critical, well-researched, and well-written analysis of the relationship between agrarian American and baseball. -- Joel S.
