Book SynopsisThe Reserve Bank of India has promoted research right from the early years of its existence. Excellent research papers have been prepared by some of the outstanding economists of the Bank. Barring exceptions, the invaluable research embodied in these papers has not been 'widely' disseminated. Former Executive Director, Dr. A. Vasudevan has utilized his lifetime of experience at the central bank to painstakingly edit the present collection of research papers (organised under four sections) with a comprehensive introduction. According to Dr. Vasudevan ""The objective of the volume is not to include articles in a large number of areas but to include only those that focus on money, monetary policy and banking issues - areas in which the Reserve Bank's expertise is widely recognized.

Book SynopsisBanking sector reforms have supported the transition of the Indian economy to a higher growth path, while significantly improving the stability of the financial system. In comparison with the pre-reform period, the Indian banking system today is more stable and efficient. Competitive pressures as well as prudential regulatory requirements have made banks risk-averse as reflected in their tendency to investment in relatively risk-free gilt instruments. The present book addresses issues like Basel - II Accord guidelines, second generation banking sector reforms, cost-benefit and productivity analysis of Indian banks, danger zone banks, privatisation and comparative efficiency of Indian banks and the recent reform measures.

Book SynopsisThe book tries to map the key innovation initiatives and emerging competitive advantages for banks, drawing examples from real cases of banks and fintech/digital challengers, and from the international consulting experience of the author. A methodological approach is taken to discuss the hypothetical ""singularity bank,"" a bank that could make redundant most of its human resources. AI apps would take control across all kind of processes, from compliance to capital allocation, from risk underwriting to customer advisory and sale. This book discusses also how this would cause key processes in the bank to change, and how organization and governance should evolve as a consequence. Also discussed is how human resources could rise to the challenge of the change brought by AI and the robotization of the banking business.

Book SynopsisThe main idea of this book is that the root cause of the financial crisis is the ambition to handle risk as a well-defined commodity that can be traded in the market. The book provides an interpretation of the crisis going beyond simple reconstructions. Finance cannot be rescued by simply referring to ethics or limiting the remuneration of managers. This book is unique in that it covers both the American and the European crisis.

Book SynopsisWhen we look at all the challenges facing the world, including inequality, population migration, and climate change, we can see a role for development banking in nearly all of them. But will that role be played for good or ill? This book brings together two people who collectively draw on their forty-five years of experience in that world to argue that development banking can-and must-play a constructive role. We only need to read the news to find public outrage at tales of short-sighted greed in the financial world. But what happens when banks invest in long-term sustainability? Readers will find a fascinating example in the journey of the Dutch development bank FMO. At times global in perspective, at other moments intimately personal, Banking for a Better World interweaves candid anecdotes with development history, as well as banking lessons with client interviews, to deliver a powerful argument for a business model that generates profit through impact, and impact through profit. This is an important and accessible must-read for anyone involved in banking, business, policy making, and civil society as a whole. Banking for a Better World challenges us to start finding overlaps between our own lives and global issues and to bridge the distance between our personal needs and those of our planet.

Book SynopsisThe second volume of the history of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) takes up the story of how the Bank has become an indispensable part of the international financial architecture. It tracks the rollercoaster ride during this period, including the Bank’s crucial coordinating role in response to global and regional crises, the calls for its presence as an investor in Turkey, the Middle East and North Africa and later Greece and Cyprus, as well as the consequences of conflicts within its original region. It shows how in face of the growing threat of global warming the EBRD, working mainly with the private sector, developed a sustainable energy business model to tackle climate change.Transforming Markets also examines how the EBRD broadened its investment criteria, arguing that transition towards sustainable economies requires market qualities that are not only competitive and integrated but which are also resilient, well-governed, green and more inclusive. This approach aligned with the 2015 Paris Agreement and the international community’s 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, with its core set of 17 sustainable development goals. The story of the EBRD’s own transition and rich history provides a route map for building the sustainable markets necessary for future growth and prosperity.Table of ContentsList of Abbreviations Acknowledgments Foreword by Odile Renaud-Basso, President of the EBRD Preface PART I An Evolving Landscape Chapter 1 Pivot to Turkey Chapter 2 Markets in Crisis Chapter 3 Arab Spring Chapter 4 Operations in Greece and Cyprus Chapter 5 Geopolitical Tensions PART II Towards Sustainable Market Economies Chapter 6 Rethinking Transition Chapter 7 Equality of Opportunity Chapter 8 Supporting Resilience and Good Governance Chapter 9 A Better Climate PART III The Role of the EBRD Chapter 10 The EBRD after 30 Years Photos Index

Book SynopsisFinancial services industry has shown trends of increased consolidation across different types of financial institutions. This book focuses on the conglomeration of banking and insurance activities among financial institutions of the 15 old members of the European Union, and addresses the development and impact of conglomeration linkages between these fifteen and the ten new member states. Most of the large groups combining banking and insurance activities groups among the former member states of the European Union are often linked to the largest such institutions in the new member states, having created the linkages mainly through Merger & Acquisition Activities; with greater accent on the banking sector and lesser connections on insurance side. Financial conglomeration linkages between the EU-15 and the new member states highlight investment attractiveness of the new members, with the appeal of new markets that allow the presence of more participants. Book SynopsisThe Federal Reserve System, created in the early 20th century, is now more than a hundred years old. This book takes the reader through the founding and first century of Federal Reserve monetary policy, and uses the analysis of the past to address the present and future issues of central banking. With its focus on the actual policies, rather than the politics or individuals that determined those policies, this book addresses issues that have plagued monetarists since the onset of the Great Recession. Then, it proceeds to discuss the issues that will affect the efficacy of policy in the future. This section of the book is relevant for all central banks as central bank behavior post the onset of the Great Recession was similar throughout the world. The book presents an analysis of the path of inflation that puzzled the experts. It adds an analysis of central banking's ability or lack thereof to influence market interest rates. Lastly, it explains the current exploding crypto-currency craze, its potential to supplant traditional transactions media, and the future of these so-called currencies.

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisFor nearly two decades, countless non-profits in the U.S. were forced to pay big banks enormous sums of money to settle or terminate bilateral contracts known as Interest Rate Swaps (IRSs). Officials at non-profits had entered into these costly contracts unaware that each contract has only one winner, and that big banks did not intend to be the losers. The effects of such monetary transfers have been catastrophic. Money-strapped non-profits had to dismiss schoolteachers, shut off water supply to thousands of poor households, and downsize many other essential public services. Local and state governments, public school districts, universities, hospitals and transit authorities from New York to Los Angeles have been among the largest hit. This book presents selected cases and highlights the lack of evidence that decision makers at non-profits had fully understood the terms and complexities of IRSs. The evident unequal bargaining power thus gives rise to the high likelihood of unconscionable contracting. Additionally, for terminating these contracts, big banks collected huge sums of money for services that had not been, and will never be, rendered. Accordingly, questions arise as to whether these termination payments are tantamount to unjust enrichment.Related Link(s)

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisIncreased integration of financial markets has led to many tangible economic benefits in Asia and around the world; yet, greater financial globalization has also exposed emerging economies to the vagaries of international capital flows. Harnessing the benefits of financial globalization while mitigating the risks posed by procyclical financial flows is a major preoccupation that has required central bankers in Asia and around the world to extend their focus beyond price and exchange rate stability to include the stability and efficiency of the financial system. This expanded domain of concern for central bankers has brought new, often complex, policy challenges. Since 2014, the Monetary Authority of Singapore, Asian Bureau of Finance and Economic Research, University of Chicago Booth Business School, and National University of Singapore Business School have organised the Asian Monetary Policy Forum (AMPF) annually, bringing together prominent academics, policymakers and private sector economists to deliberate pressing monetary policy issues particularly relevant for Asian countries. The aim is to draw lessons from experience for the benefit of policymakers in the region and beyond. This volume includes selected AMPF speeches and commissioned papers from 2014 to 2020. Based on the latest academic research in economics and finance and written for a more general audience, the chapters cover a range of topics that have assumed central importance in the global monetary and financial system over the past twenty years. These include the efficacy of traditional monetary policy frameworks against the backdrop of synchronised global financial flows, the challenges presented by the US dollar dominance in the international trade and monetary systems, and the optimality of central banks' use of a wider set of policy instruments within an integrated policy framework to attain price and financial stability.Table of ContentsIntroduction to Asian Monetary Policy Forum, 2014–2020: Insights for Central Bankers (Steven J Davis, Edward S Robinson & Bernard Yeung); Getting in All the Cracks or Targeting the Cracks? • Lean Six Sigma in Banking Services: Operational

Springer Verlag, Singapore Lean Six Sigma in Banking Services: Operational

    3 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book explores a range of prospective avenues, models, and operational and strategic approaches to Lean Six Sigma (LSS), a contemporary Continuous Improvement (CI) practice for achieving a quality-based competitive edge in organisations. Lean Six Sigma project case studies from banking organizations help to illustrate the operational dimensions of LSS, while the case-specific and cross-case analyses presented here demonstrate its strategic value. While the case data used to arrive at the findings come from the Banking firms, it allows generalizability beyond the Banking and Financial Services sector. The book contends that LSS is not merely a CI practice, but a higher-order organizational capability, more precisely a dynamic capability, that allows firms to gain a competitive edge based on quality. Addressing the interests of practitioners and researchers alike, the book strikes a balance between theory and practice. For practitioners, it offers guidance on using LSS to gain a competitive advantage, and on evidence-based practice in quality management and operational excellence. For researchers, it presents a wealth of literature and expands the body of knowledge on quality management. Accordingly, the book is of immense value to both practitioners and researchers, helping the former unlock the value of LSS as both an operational and strategic resource, and highlighting potential research directions and applications for the latter.“This book provides a deep understanding of Lean Six Sigma applications. It inspires by transferring the principles of the concept into uncommon areas of operations and management behind the usual quality and project management. While reading the book I got hit by a great idea of applying Lean Six Sigma in my digital business as well. My impression at the end of the book was that sky is the limit for the right employment of Lean Six Sigma, especially while viewing it from a dynamic capabilities’ lens. Readers of this book will surely receive insights for improving their business processes both operationally and strategically. Although the book is focused on banking, it is actually suitable for a really wide audience. This is a brilliant piece of research as a book that will serve as a guide for transformation by the prism of Lean Six Sigma.” - Professor. Dr. ZornitsaYordanova, Chief Assistant Professor of Innovation Management, University of National and World Economy, Sofia, Bulgaria “Lean Six Sigma needs to be understood from a systems perspective and there exists a huge knowledge gap in this area of finding holistic solutions to business problems. This book is a very welcome work that addresses this call. It integrates quality management resources and dynamic capabilities view towards practice. Banking and Financial Services was aptly chosen as it has the most direct applicability for social enterprises. Anyone interested in creating more impact with less will surely benefit from reading the book” -Alex Abraham, Chief Executive Officer, Lean Success Partners, Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada “The book is a refreshing booster to the world of Quality Management especially in the context of Banking and Financial Services. Book SynopsisCross-border banking, while having the potential for a more efficient financial sector, also creates potential challenges for bank supervisors and regulators. It requires cooperation by regulatory authorities across jurisdictions and a clear delineation of authority and responsibility. That delineation is typically not present and regulatory authorities often have significantly different incentives to respond when cross-border-active banks encounter difficulties. Most of these issues have only begun to be seriously evaluated. This volume, one of the first attempts to address these issues, brings together experts and regulators from different countries. The wide range of topics discussed include: the current landscape of cross-border bank activity, the resulting competitive implications, emerging challenges for prudential regulation, safety net concerns, failure resolution issues, and the potential future evolution of international banking. This book has been selected for coverage in:• Index to Social Sciences & Humanities Proceedings® (ISSHP® / ISI Proceedings)• Index to Social Sciences & Humanities Proceedings (ISSHP CDROM version/ISI Proceedings)Table of ContentsSpecial Addresses: Cross-Border Banking: Forces Driving Change and Resulting Regulatory Challenges (M H Moskow); Cross-Border Banking and the Challenges Faced by Host Country Authorities (G Ortiz); Survey of the Current Landscape: Risks in US Bank International Exposures (N Cetorelli & L S Goldberg); Cross-Border Banking in Asia: Basel II and Other Prudential Issues (S Hohl et al.); Competitive Implications: Competitive Implications of Cross-Border Banking (S Claessens); Bank Concentration and Credit Volatility (A Micco & U Panizza); Prudential Regulation Issues: Home and Host Supervisors' Relations from a Host Supervisor's Perspective (P Bednarski & G Bielicki); Basel II Home Host Issues (P Jackson); Market Discipline Issues: Confronting Divergent Interests in Cross-Country Regulatory Arrangements (E J Kane); Market Discipline Issues Associated with Cross-Border Banking (D D Evanoff); Safety Net Issues: The Lender of Last Resort in the European Single Financial Market (G J Schinasi & P G Teixeira); Payment Systems and the Safety Net: The Role of Central Bank Money and Oversight (J Stehm); Insolvency Resolution Issues: Banking in a Changing World: Issues and Questions in the Resolution of Cross-Border Banks (M Krimminger); Bank Insolvency Procedures as Foundation for Market Discipline (A Angkinand & C Wihlborg); Policy Panel: Where to from Here?: Comments on Cross-Border Banking: Regulatory Challenges (C Calari); Designing the Home-Host Relationship to Support in Good Times and Bad: Trans-Tasman Developments (A Orr); and other papers.
