Pen & Sword Books Ltd Sir Alan Cobham: The Flying Legend Who Brought

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisFlying in the years between the two world wars was the preserve of the powerful and the wealthy, or so it was until Sir Alan Cobham's 'Flying Circus' began to tour Britain. A former pilot with the Royal Flying Corps in the First World War, Alan Cobham continued to fly, establishing air routes to the Empire countries. He also involved himself in aerial photography and survey work, undertook charter flights and pioneered the 'Air to Air' refuelling technique still in use today. Yet it was his National Aviation Day displays for which Sir Alan Cobham's name is best remembered. Affectionally known as 'Cobham's Flying Circus', his team of up to fourteen aircraft toured the United Kingdom, visiting hundreds of municipal locations, allowing 'ordinary' people to have their first taste of flying. So extensively did Cobham travel with his displays, and so popular did they become, that after war broke out in 1939, some 75 per cent of Britain's young men volunteering for aircrew duties claimed that their first experience of flying had been with 'the Circus'. Sir Alan's name still lives on in the aviation world. The creation of Flight Refuelling Limited in 1934 eventually led to the formation of what is today a major international aerospace and defence organisation-Cobham PLC.

Pen & Sword Books Ltd Barnstormers, Wing-Walking and Flying Circuses

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisWhile large numbers of aeroplanes had been produced In America for the war effort overseas at the Western Front, it was found that that the British, French and Germans were far ahead of them when it came to flight technology, which led to a huge surplus of aeroplanes in the United States. The government's solution to recover some of the money was to sell the surplus stock off for as little as $200 dollars each. With no licence being required to fly a plane, the offer attracted many ex-fighter pilots as well as civilians, who developed a new American pastime known as barnstorming. Part entertainers, part thrill-seekers, the barnstormers made their way across the country as solo acts and in groups called 'Flying Circuses'. The American flier Ormer Locklear wowed the crowds by climbing out of his aeroplane and walk along the wing, and it wasn't long before flying circuses held less appeal for spectators if it didn't have a wing-walking act. Handstands, jumps across planes, and even the odd game of tennis were attempted by barnstormers to attract larger paying audiences. In 1936, the US Government banned wing-walking under 1,500 ft, which doomed aerial stunting, and while a few wing-walking teams operated in the 1970s, it wasn't until barnstormer Vic Norman founded his famous AeroSuperBatics wing-walking team in the early 1980s that the sight of daredevils hand-standing and flying upside down on the wing was seen in Europe. Several teams around the world subsequently formed using aeroplanes such as the Boeing Stearman or the Curtiss 'Jenny' biplanes to wow crowds as a part of regular air displays, and their appeal has continued to rise since the 2000s.

  • PPL - Communications Revision Guide

Crecy Publishing PPL - Communications Revision Guide

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisToo often, the subject of radio communications is treated as an ''after thought'' in pilot training. The student pilot may be expected to learn largely from their own training experience but, without a deeper knowledge of proper radio phraseology and Air Traffic Service (ATS) procedures, the student becomes a pilot who is under-confident in use of the radio and dealing with any ATS unit other than that at their home airfield. This potential shortcoming was addressed in the 2015 EASA Private Pilot Licence (PPL) and Light Aircraft Pilot Licence (LAPL) courses, produced by a team of experienced flying instructors and examiners put together by the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA). This new syllabus is designed to bring PPL and LAPL training in-line with the modern training environment. In particular, the new training courses are focused on providing up-to-date and practical aeronautical knowledge, rather than requiring the pilot to rote learn largely academic and irrelevant material with little application to ''real world'' flying. To make the most of this new approach to PPL and LAPL theoretical knowledge, Aeronautical Knowledge, Communications is part of a brand new series of aviation training manuals, designed from the beginning to take full advantage of this new methodology in aviation training. In this book, AFE has produced a totally new publication for the subject of Communications, fully aligned with the 2015 EASA PPL and LAPL syllabi and providing the pilot with a deeper understanding of the day-to-day radio procedures in accordance with European standards including the Standardised European Rules of the Air (SERA).Aeronautical Knowledge, Communications approaches the subject of radio phraseology and procedures on a ''step-by-step'' basis, from a starting point assuming no prior knowledge of the subject, through to a comprehensive coverage of practical radio communications for Visual Flight Rules (VFR) flight. In line with modern teaching methodology, the emphasis is on developing sound knowledge and practical skills, rather than requiring the student pilot to learn purely academic material with little or no application to day-to-day operations.Aeronautical Knowledge, Communications is part of a new series of publications marking a fresh and modern approach to Theoretical Knowledge training. This series is now delivering the real-word aeronautical knowledge that today''s pilot need - not just to pass the relevant exams but also to operate safely and proficiently in the modern aviation environment.

Book SynopsisOperational Procedures is one of the first Theoretical Knowledge (TK) subjects to be tackled on almost any pilot''s licence course.Nevertheless, many student pilots approach ''Ops Proc'' with a heavy heart, not helped by the original syllabus for the subject which was confused and lacked practical knowledge. This shortcoming was addressed in the new 2015 EASA pilot training syllabi, designed to bring pilot training into line with the modern flying environment. To make the best of this new approach to teaching aviation Theoretical Knowledge requires new training material for the student pilot, and Aeronautical Knowledge - Operational Procedures is part of a brand-new series of training manuals, designed from the beginning to take full advantage of this new methodology in aviation training. Rather than merely making revisions to an existing publication, AFE has produced a totally new training manual for Operational Procedures, covering new topics such as Threat and Error Management (TEM), EASA ''Part-NCO'' regulations, Portable Electronic Devices (PED) and incident reporting.Written by the best-selling aviation author of over 25 pilot training manuals, Aeronautical Knowledge - Operational Procedures finally brings this important aviation subject fully up-to-date.

The History Press Ltd Miles M.52: Gateway to Supersonic Flight

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisIn December 1943, a top secret contract (E.24/43) was awarded to Miles Aircraft. The contract was to build the world's first supersonic jet capable of 1000mph. The only reliable source of data on supersonic objects came from the Armament Research Dept and their wind tunnel tests on ammunition. From this, Miles developed an exceptionally thin-winged, bullet-shaped aircraft. the research was inexplicably passed to the Americans in 1944. By December 1945, one prototype was virtually complete. The second, destined for an attempt at the sound barrier was 80 per cent complete. In February 1946, Capt Eric Brown was confirmed as the test pilot and October 1946 was set for the supersonic trials. However, on 12 February 1946, Miles were ordered to stop production. No plausible explanation was given for the cancellation when Britain was within six months of breaking the sound barrier. Eric Brown and others directly involved including Dennis Bancroft, the Chief Aerodynamicist on the M.52, have now come together to try and finally solve the mystery behind the cancellation.

Book SynopsisBorn in the Philippines to an American father and a Filipina mother, George Cooper is one of the few surviving veteran pilots who saw action over such fearsome targets as Rabaul and Wewak. Not just another flag-waving story of air combat, Jayhawk describes the war as it really was - a conflict with far-reaching tentacles that gripped and tore at not only the combatants, but also their families, friends and the way they lived their lives. Stout examines the story of Cooper’s growing up in gentle and idyllic pre-war Manila and how he grew to be the man he is. At 100 years old, few men are left alive who can share similar experiences. Stout reviews Cooper’s journey to the United States and his unlikely entry into the United States Army Air Forces. Trained as a B-25 pilot, Cooper was assigned to the iconic 345th Bomb Group and flew strafing missions that shredded the enemy, but likewise put himself and his comrades in grave danger. A husband and father, Cooper was pulled two ways by the pull of duty and his obligation to his wife and daughter. BBC2 documentary based on the book 30 January 2012.Antony Woodward wasn't interested in flying, he was interested in his image. So in his world of socialising and serial womanising, a microlight plane sounded like the ideal sex aid. So why once he discovers that he has no ability as a pilot, it costs a fortune and its maddening unreliability loses him the one girl he really wants does he get more and more hooked? As he monitors the changes to the others in the syndicate; as he learns that there is a literal down-side to cheating in flying exams, shunning responsibility and pretending to know stuff you don't, the question keeps on surfacing. Why? As the misadventures mount accidents, tussles with Tornadoes, arrest by the RAF he keeps thinking he's worked it out. But it isn't until The Crash, in which he nearlyTrade Review‘Inspirational…one of the best books ever written about flying.’ PILOT, May 2011 ‘What Nick Hornby did for football, Antony Woodward has done for flying … Wonderful.’ OBSERVER ‘Hugely engaging … refreshingly amateur and low-tech … a true love affair, albeit with clouds and air.’ SUNDAY TELEGRAPH ‘Hilarious … chock-full of incident, heartache, historical detail and near-death-experience, in as entertaining a non-fiction narrative as I have read … Woodward has a gift for storytelling and comic timing and his acute awareness of the absurdities of maleness make this an impossible book not to like. 5 in stock

Book SynopsisCharles Ulm and Charles Kingsford Smith were the original pioneers of Australian aviation. Together they succeeded in a number of record-breaking flights that made them instant celebrities in Australia and around the world: the first east-to-west crossing of the Pacific, the first trans-Tasman flight, Australia to New Zealand, the first flight from New Zealand to Australia. Business ventures followed for them, as they set up Australian National Airways in late 1928. Smithy was the face of the airline, happier in the cockpit or in front of an audience than in the boardroom. Ulm on the other hand was in his element as managing director. Ulm had the tenacity and organisational skills, yet Smithy had the charisma and the public acclaim. In 1932, Kingsford Smith received a knighthood for his services to flying, Ulm did not.Business setbacks and dramas followed, as Ulm tried to develop the embryonic Australian airline industry. ANA fought hard against the young Qantas, already an establishment favourite, but a catastrophic crash on the airline's regular route from Sydney to Melbourne and the increasing bite of the Great Depression forced ANA's bankruptcy in 1933. Desperate to drum up publicity for a new airline venture, Ulm's final flight was meant to demonstrate the potential for a regular trans-Pacific passenger service. Somewhere between San Francisco and Hawaii his plane, Stella Australis, disappeared. No trace of the plane or crew were ever found. In the years since his death, attention has focused more and more on Smithy, leaving Ulm neglected and overshadowed. This biography will attempt to rectify that, showing that Ulm was at least Smithy's equal as a flyer, and in many ways his superior as a visionary, as an organiser and as a businessman. His untimely death robbed Australia of a huge talent.

Book SynopsisOver 66,000 airline pilot jobs exist for larger mainline and smaller regional airlines that operate over 7,000 commercial aircraft. After a decade of turmoil that curtailed growth in the industry and resulted in fewer pilots employed at airlines since 2000, recent industry forecasts indicate that the global aviation industry is poised for growth. However, stakeholders have voiced concerns that imminent retirements, fewer pilots exiting the military, and new rules increasing the number of flight hours required to become a first officer for an airline, could result in a shortage of qualified airline pilots. This book describes what available data and forecasts reveal about the need for and potential availability of airline pilots, and what actions industry and government are taking or could take to attract and retain airline pilots. It then discusses what available data and forecasts reveal about the need for and potential availability of aerospace engineers, aircraft mechanics, and avionics technicians, and what actions industry and the federal government are taking to help attract and retain these professionals.

Book SynopsisIn late May 1927 an inexperienced and unassuming 25-year-old Air Mail pilot from rural Minnesota stunned the world by making the first nonstop transatlantic flight. A spectacular feat of individual daring and collective technological accomplishment, Charles Lindbergh''s flight from New York to Paris ushered in America''s age of commercial aviation. In The Flight of the Century, Thomas Kessner takes a fresh look at one of America''s greatest moments, explaining how what was essentially a publicity stunt became a turning point in history. Kessner vividly recreates the flight itself and the euphoric reaction to it on both sides of the Atlantic, and argues that Lindbergh''s amazing feat occurred just when the world--still struggling with the disillusionment of WWI--desperately needed a hero to restore a sense of optimism and innocence. Kessner also shows how new forms of mass media made Lindbergh into the most famous international celebrity of his time, casting him in the role of a humble Trade ReviewKessner's fresh perspective breathes new life into Lindbergh's tale. * David Cohen, Philadelphia Inquirer *Table of ContentsEditor's Note ; Introduction ; 1.
