David & Charles Optimising Car Performance Modifications: -
Book SynopsisThis highly practical and useful book covers brilliant techniques that take the guesswork out of performance modification. Using just some low-cost tools, you can easily measure the flow restriction of your car's intake and exhaust. It's like having a huge flow-bench always available. By making some simple on-road measurements, you can plot the shape of the engine's power and torque curves - no dyno needed. This allows you to not only see if performance modifications to the engine are improving power, but also see where in the rev range those changes are occurring. Assess the worth of cams, a larger turbo, changed boost control or altered engine management mapping. But the book doesn't stop there - it also shows you how to measure your car's aerodynamics, seeing if at speed your car is developing lift or downforce. Want to make a rear wing work well? Test the angle at which downforce is greatest. You can also test the aerodynamic airflow through oil coolers, intercoolers and radiators. Interested in improving your suspension? By using a low-cost app and a smartphone, you can accurately measure suspension behaviour. If you want a practical, hands-on book that will immediately save you money, show where modifications are most needed, and can be used to assess performance outcomes, this is the book for you.Trade ReviewThe book itself is written in an easy to understand manner, with the concepts and ideas easily conveyed. It encourages you to try things, but to do so in a way which gets you useful information about the changes to your car. This book gets you comfortably into the subject, and crucially gets you thinking about it. - www.silhouet.com. Easy to understand and accompanied by a wealth of good photographs, if you are into car turning, this is a cost-effective must-have title. - Iain P W Robertson. Providing easy techniques for measuring the performance of your car on the road before and after modifications, this full-colour paperback from Veloce shows you how to plot the shape of engine power and torque curves, how to measure the airflow associated with air filters, throttle bodies and induction kits, how to flow-test exhausts, how to check oil cooler, intercooler and radiator airflow and how to measure braking and suspension behaviour using a smartphone. Boasting techniques that'll save you money whilst giving you real world results, this brilliant book (authored by AutoSpeed editor Julian Edgar) promises to enable you to make the most of your modified Porsche. - Ultimate Porsche. The book is a useful and essentially practical guide - providing you can find an empty enough stretch of road to put the author's techniques to the test! SpeedsceneTable of ContentsChapter 1 - Testing your car modifications on the road Chapter 2 - Plotting engine power and torque curves Chapter 3 - Measuring on-road performance Chapter 4 - Flow testing intakes and exhausts Chapter 5 - Testing suspension and brakes Chapter 6 - Testing aerodynamics Chapter 7 - Programmable engine management Chapter 8 - Performance modification - a personal approach

David & Charles Setting up a Home Car Workshop
Book SynopsisTHE complete guide to setting up, equipping and using a home car workshop. Working on your car at home saves you money and helps you to achieve the results you want. You might want to perform routine servicing, modify a car, restore a car, or even build a car from scratch, but to achieve the best outcome, you'll need a properly-equipped workshop. Whether you have a small or large space, this book covers workshop design, equipment, storage, safety aspects and much more. You will find handy tips on the safe use of tools, a guide to welding, as well as instructions for building your own storage racks and cabinets, how to build a strong workbench - even how to make your own full-length car ramps. It also gives advice on the best tools for working on the electronics of your car. The book is fully illustrated throughout with real-world examples. If you are planning to set up your own home car workshop, this book covers everything you need to know.Trade ReviewAuthor Julian Edgar advises on the best equipment, tools and fitting with which to equip your home workshop, taking into consideration what jobs you are planning to undertake and how much room you have at your disposal. There's also invaluable suggestions on innovative storage ideas when space is at a premium and recommendations of the most reliable makes and models to buy. It's illustrated throughout with colour photos and illustrations. - Car Mechanics. Go on, you know you want to - a guide to how to turn wherever you keep your car into a place to repair, renovate and restore. - Classic Cars. Author Edgar's guide to organising a garage covers everything from tool choice to workshop layout. You'll find suggestion for modifying tools, making them yourself and neat storage tricks. With welding techniques, hand and power tool use and even electrical diagnostics included, this could well be the helping hand needed to establish or improve your home garage. - Classic & Sports Car. Both workshop novice and experienced mechanic alike will find much of interest in this book. All aspects of the well ordered home workshop are covered, including its design, layout and organisation, with numerous illustration of both the author's own facility and those of his engineering colleagues. The book also covers hints and tips on producing your own specialised tools which may not be commercially available and there's also a chapter on the all-important safety aspects of workshop procedure. This well produced, profusely illustrated and often amusingly written book is one that everyone who operates their own workshop would benefit from reading. - Speedscene. A welcome reprint in paperback of BRM insider, Dick Salmon's no-nonsense view of exactly what it was like being a member of a works racing team in Formula One racing in the 1950s to the 1970s. Dick became accustomed to travelling around with the team, culminating in its World Championship double victory in 1962 with Graham Hill as number one driver and BRM as top constructor. Dick tells of the team's ups and downs, the everyday events and the special moments in a very readable manner. The forward was written by Graham Hill's wife, Bette, who died in December 2017. - Classic Car Weekly. There is much in here about racing, but plenty too about life on a road that was far less straightforward than is has since become. The engaging prose is accompanied by a diverse photo archive, covering action, people, technical details and the need to crane team trucks onto boat decks because that was the most practical way to reach Casablanca. It's a glorious reflection of an age when travelling meant something more adventurous than scanning a boarding pass in your smartphone. - Motor Sport. The ultimate 'man cave' has to contain racks of told and a purposeful bench. However, going the extra mile to create your own home workshop (for your car) is something that a growing number of people are intent on doing. This excellent paperback is packed with first-class illustrations and photographs to help ardent DIYers to meet their goals. Step-by-step it shows how to establish a home-based car workshop, with the primary aim of saving money, helping you to exercise your own talents and to achieve the detail finish you want. Scarcely a stone has been left unturned in the author's endeavours to provide a means to create the ultimate workshop. As one of the most useful books about automotive aspects that I have read in a while, I can recommend this one strongly. - Iain P W Robertsn, Freelance. This book sets out a clear route to establishing, equipping, and organising a home workshop. It seems to cover the whole scope, from selecting hand tools and using them effectively to choosing the best types of welding equipment for your needs, and building ramps and work benches. The book also contains some useful layout ideas, so that your workshop makes the best use of whatever space you have available and to help your workflow to be smooth and logical. This book looks like being very useful for all car owners with some DIY ability, whether they are working on classics or moderns. - Classic Driver (Monthly). Informative and easy to comprehend, it succinctly explains everything that is needed to establish a well-equipped workshop within one's home environment. For the professional restorer this study might be rather basic, but for the amateur enthusiast who wants to work in ideal conditions with the right tools to produce high quality results, this is an affordable and excellently produced publication courtesy of an experienced motor engineer. The photograph, too, is excellent and makes for easy interpretation. - SAHB Times. Even if you are an old hand at vehicle maintenance and have long experience in mending/improving vehicles in garages and workshops, I feel that this book would be of interest and use to you. Reading this book from cover to cover, I found fascinating and thought-provoking the information contained within its pages. - Update. If you want a more in-depth look at equipping your garage, checkout this latest release from Veloce Publishing. 'Setting up a home car workshop' is a detailed look at the whole subject that includes choosing the right basic hand tools. It's not simply theory because the author, Julian Edgar, has designed and built enough of them so there's good hands on experience here and well worth the asking price. - Classic Motoring. Here's a good book and another winner from Veloce Publishing. Wether you have a small or large space this book covers all you need to know and it's the complete guide to setting up, equipping and using a workshop at home. Regardless of what you use it for i.e. to do routine servicing, building a kit car, modifying or even restoring a classic, a decent well-equipped home workshop is essential. All backed by clear and informative photographs. - TKC.[This book] will give a person thinking about setting up their own workshop a lot to think about and it will give those who already have their shop some great ideas to improve organization or tools you should consider.- MGB Driver.
