David & Charles How to Restore & Improve Classic Car Suspension,
Book SynopsisThis comprehensive manual provides professional but easy-to-follow know-how on how to restore, improve and maintain your classic car's suspension, steering and wheels. This book will familiarise you with the components of your car's suspension and steering systems and their construction, it also takes a detailed look at refurbishing wheels and the choice of tyres. The relevant restoration techniques are fully explained and illustrated with detailed step-by-step photography. The book is a new title in Veloce's Enthusiast's Restoration Manual series, and is based on articles from Europe's leading classic car magazine OLDTIMER MARKT.Trade ReviewSteering and suspension are among the most vital safety components. As a result, many classic owners who are happy to tune a carb or replace a timing belt are put off when it comes to replacing a ball joint. Understandable though this is, Veloce's new book shows just how simple most set-ups are and that the DIY-er need not be so reluctant. With 680 full colour images, there are plenty of illustrations to explain things and sections devoted both to repair and modification. If you're intimidated by classic suspension, but want to give it a go, this book's for you. - Classic Car Weekly. It gives a good insight into how vehicle suspension works and includes some interesting ideas on updating and maintaining areas which could be applicable. - Mini World. A good selection of colour illustrations and helpful charts enhance the largely useful information in the copy, which enables readers to become familiar with the components in question on their car, and includes descriptions of how these components work together. Any interested party wishing to get more understanding of the tricks in restoring and improving these areas of a car should find this book to be helpful, informative and quite possibly interesting. - IRDC Quattro. This latest edition to Veloce's Enthusiast's Restoration Manual series offers details and step-by-step guides to maintenance, restoration and modification. Compiled from previously published technical articles, it has plenty of images and tech-heavy text translated by Julian Parish. This is a worthwhile read for anyone working on, or owning, different classics. - Classic & Sports Car. Well written with many clear photographs to support the text, it’s got to be worth a punt and might ultimately save you money. - Classic American

David & Charles Modifying the Aerodynamics of Your Road Car
Book SynopsisThis unique handbook assumes no starting knowledge of vehicle aerodynamics. It begins with simple ideas and finishes with sophisticated and effective aerodynamic modifications that work. Three major chapters cover on-road testing techniques that give you all the information you need to decide what modifications you should make - and, after you've made them, how well they work. Low-cost techniques allow you to visualise the patterns of airflow over your car so that you can actually see the problem areas that need improvement. Uniquely, you're also shown how to measure aerodynamic pressures, so you can determine which body surfaces are creating lift, drag and downforce. Want to work out where a wing should be placed? On-road testing to find that out is covered as well. The book also shows you how to measure downforce to see if that wing is actually working! If you wish to reduce drag, more than ten different areas are covered. Reducing frontal area, lowering cooling system drag, optimising vehicle ride height and rake, reducing the strength of the wake, achieving clean airflow separation and optimising wheel designs - they're all covered using the latest research findings. And if you're a performance driver, there's a major chapter devoted to reducing lift and improving stability. This chapter includes the design and development of undertrays and diffusers, wings and spoilers. The example car developed measurable downforce when fitted with an undertray and rear diffuser, something that transformed its on-road handling. The author has been writing about the aerodynamics of road cars for more than 25 years. He is also an experienced and proficient car modifier who has performed numerous aerodynamic modifications and upgrades to his own cars. The book's technical consultant, RH Barnard, is an acknowledged world leading automotive aerodynamicist. If you want a practical, hands-on guide that demystifies and explains car aerodynamics, and shows you how to make effective aerodynamic modifications to your car, this book is for you.Trade ReviewA great read for anyone interest in car aerodynamics. tkc (Totalkitcarhttp:/)this is a great practical guide to road car aerodynamics, simply explained, and backed up with plenty of references to industry sources and papers for those who want to find out more. www.silhouet.com. a fascinating book Iain P W Robertson - FreelanceTable of ContentsChapter 1 - Theory * Wake drag * Viscous drag * Body pressures causing drag and lift * Interference drag * Attached and separated flows * Reynolds numbers * Trailing vortices * Undercar flows * Drag and lift coefficients * Yaw * Dynamic and static pressures Chapter 2 - Aerodynamic vehicles * Rumpler Tropfenwagen * Opel RAK II winged rocket car * Tatra T87 * Porsche Type 64 * Volkswagen Transporter * NSU Ro80 * Dodge Charger Daytona & Plymouth Roadrunner Superbird * Holden Special Vehicles Group A Commodore * Opel Calibra * General Motors EV1 * General Motors Chevrolet Volt * Volkswagen XL-1 Chapter 3 - Flow visualisation * On-road flow testing * Visualisation techniques * Wool-tufting * Smoke streams * Eroding clay * Dust Chapter 4 - Pressure measurement * Pressure measurement aims * Measuring instruments * Magnehelic gauges * Pressure probes * Measuring pressures with a Magnehelic gauge * Step-by-step pressure measurement * Using pressure measurement data * Using pitot tubes to measure airspeed Chapter 5 - Measuring drag and lift * Measuring drag * Required power testing * Coast-down testing * Fuel economy testing * Measuring lift and downforce on the road Chapter 6 - Reducing drag * Reducing frontal area * Reducing rear vison mirror drag * Reducing cooling drag * Ride height and rake * Reducing the area of the wake * Reducing the strength of the wake * Achieving clean separation * Reducing separation bubbles * Undertrays * Wheels, tyres and wheel arches * Reducing drag - development of a new car Chapter 7 - Reducing lift and improving stability * Causes of lift * Stability * Determining the centre of pressure and centre of gravity * Lateral forces * Undertrays and diffusers * Spoilers * Wings * Reducing trailing vortices * Active aerodynamics Chapter 8 - Improving flow through heat exchangers * Pressure differentials * Improving underbonnet intercooler airflow * Testing a diesel intercooler * Designing and installing an alternator cooling duct * Turning vanes * Bonnet (hood) vents and ducts Chapter 9 - Engine intakes * Benefits * Measuring pressures * Measuring engine intakes * Building a new engine intake Chapter 10 - Reducing aerodynamic noise * Causes of aerodynamic noise * Testing and measurement * Decreasing noise production * Decreasing noise transmission * Modifications to reduce noise

There's also invaluable suggestions on innovative storage ideas when space is at a premium and recommendations of the most reliable makes and models to buy. It's illustrated throughout with colour photos and illustrations. - Car Mechanics. Go on, you know you want to - a guide to how to turn wherever you keep your car into a place to repair, renovate and restore. - Classic Cars. Author Edgar's guide to organising a garage covers everything from tool choice to workshop layout. You'll find suggestion for modifying tools, making them yourself and neat storage tricks. This well produced, profusely illustrated and often amusingly written book is one that everyone who operates their own workshop would benefit from reading. - Speedscene. A welcome reprint in paperback of BRM insider, Dick Salmon's no-nonsense view of exactly what it was like being a member of a works racing team in Formula One racing in the 1950s to the 1970s. Dick became accustomed to travelling around with the team, culminating in its World Championship double victory in 1962 with Graham Hill as number one driver and BRM as top constructor. Dick tells of the team's ups and downs, the everyday events and the special moments in a very readable manner. The forward was written by Graham Hill's wife, Bette, who died in December 2017. - Classic Car Weekly. There is much in here about racing, but plenty too about life on a road that was far less straightforward than is has since become. The engaging prose is accompanied by a diverse photo archive, covering action, people, technical details and the need to crane team trucks onto boat decks because that was the most practical way to reach Casablanca. It's a glorious reflection of an age when travelling meant something more adventurous than scanning a boarding pass in your smartphone. - Motor Sport. The ultimate 'man cave' has to contain racks of told and a purposeful bench. However, going the extra mile to create your own home workshop (for your car) is something that a growing number of people are intent on doing. This excellent paperback is packed with first-class illustrations and photographs to help ardent DIYers to meet their goals. Step-by-step it shows how to establish a home-based car workshop, with the primary aim of saving money, helping you to exercise your own talents and to achieve the detail finish you want. Scarcely a stone has been left unturned in the author's endeavours to provide a means to create the ultimate workshop. As one of the most useful books about automotive aspects that I have read in a while, I can recommend this one strongly. - Iain P W Robertsn, Freelance. This book sets out a clear route to establishing, equipping, and organising a home workshop. It seems to cover the whole scope, from selecting hand tools and using them effectively to choosing the best types of welding equipment for your needs, and building ramps and work benches. The book also contains some useful layout ideas, so that your workshop makes the best use of whatever space you have available and to help your workflow to be smooth and logical. This book looks like being very useful for all car owners with some DIY ability, whether they are working on classics or moderns. - Classic Driver (Monthly). Informative and easy to comprehend, it succinctly explains everything that is needed to establish a well-equipped workshop within one's home environment. For the professional restorer this study might be rather basic, but for the amateur enthusiast who wants to work in ideal conditions with the right tools to produce high quality results, this is an affordable and excellently produced publication courtesy of an experienced motor engineer. The photograph, too, is excellent and makes for easy interpretation. - SAHB Times. Even if you are an old hand at vehicle maintenance and have long experience in mending/improving vehicles in garages and workshops, I feel that this book would be of interest and use to you. Reading this book from cover to cover, I found fascinating and thought-provoking the information contained within its pages. - Update.
