Book SynopsisEddie Izzard - action transvestite, boy racer and male tomboy - spent the 1990s conquering Britain. As the decade ended, he looked further afield. Dressed To Kill, his stand-up tour, saw him transport his high heels and off-the-shoulder numbers to New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco, taking a natural comedian''s delight in the differences separating the two sides of the Pond. In this book, he reflects on his birth in Yemen and his childhood in Northern Ireland, Wales and London, and muses on animals, male tomboys, street theatre, sex, crime, God, The Great Escape, Bible stories starring Sean Connery and James Mason, and cats who dig for oil. He also reflects on the trials and tribulations of being an cross-dressing, surrealist comedian intent on making it in America.

Book Synopsis8 August 1963; a railway track in Buckinghamshire. The moon shines clearly over Bruce Reynolds and sixteen other men robbing a train of its sacks of money. The Great Train Robbery has entered British folklore as one of the most audacious and extraordinary crimes of the twentieth century. The haul 2,631,684 - is, in todays money, a staggering 26 million.Bruce Reynolds, the leader of the gang, was sentenced to 25 years in prison; even the Commissioner of the Met, Sir Robert Mark, thought that excessive. On its first publication in 1995 Bruce Reynolds autobiography was widely acclaimed and it is now regarded as a classic in the true crime genre. Now reissued with a new introduction and final chapter, the story is brought up to date to include the return of Ronnis Biggs to the UK, the deaths of Buster Edwards, Roy James and Taters Chatham and the continuing story of Reynolds life since his release from jail, as well as dozens of previously unseen photographs.Trade ReviewHis story stands apart ... skilful enough to capture both the immediate excitement of crime and the dull price it so often extracts * The Times *Far superior in style and narrative to the standard self-serving criminal memoir * Guardian *Exceptional... elegantly writtenAmazes and immorally amuses with his high-living, anti-establishment career * Daily Mail *

Book SynopsisExplosively personal account by a British lawyer who defends Death Row prisoners and Guantanamo Bay detainees.Clive Stafford Smith is the 46-year-old human-rights lawyer who has famously - some would say notoriously - spent more than twenty years in the United States representing prisoners on Death Row. His clients include many detainees in Guantanamo Bay in Cuba, and he established the London-based charity Reprieve, developed to defending human rights in 1999. His book is quite simply, devastating, and many will laugh and cry reading it: laugh in disbelief, and cry in despair at the utter inhumanity and lack of imagination wrapped up in hypocrisy so enormous that it beggars understanding. Yet even in the face of insurmountable odds, Clive Stafford Smith remains an optimist. Few could maintain his capacity for work and his commitment to his clients if he allowed frustration or despair to divert him. His experiences, graphically recounted in this book, havTrade Reviewthis shattering account of the Cuban limbo is timelier than ever * INDEPENDENT *

I was in tears after the first few pages! Rose has changed the lives of so many through her generosity of heart and the amazing stewardship of what the Lord has provided.” -- Rosemary Conley CBE“Ray and I first met John and Rose thirty-five years ago when they were living in a caravan with their young family, but even with very little themselves, they were generous to us and have continued to be so to this day. They are incredible people and amazing friends.” -- Nancy Goudie, author and motivational speaker “John and Rose’s willingness to invest, specifically the three aircraft they enabled MAF to purchase, has resulted in thousands of lives being transformed. Their heart for Africa has always been demonstrated through their practical visits of support.” -- Ruth Whitaker, CEO MAF UK“Being friends with John and Rose, I have known something of their beautiful story. However, to see it all written down has been truly inspirational. I’m sure like me, you will be touched by their infectious virus of generosity.” -- Andy Hawthorne OBE, founder of The Message Trust, Manchester“This book is inspiring and portrays Rosemary’s compassionate heart and bravery, especially the story of going onto the dangerous rubbish dumps in Eldoret. Book SynopsisWhether castrating horses or tending to stoned Alsatians, Gillian Hick's sense of humour never deserts her in this engaging account of her life as a vet.Trade Review'This book is just hilarious. Suffice to quote the story of Gillian being called out to tend a guard dog called Rambo, who 'could best be described as a cross between a Rhodesian Ridgeback and a Rottweiler, with a bit of German Shepherd thrown in for good measure'. When she nervously approaches the giant beast in his kennel, the diagnosis was obvious. 'Rambo was stoned'. It emerged that the vigilent guard dog had chased off a drug dealer -- then consumed the prohibited substances abandoned in the persuit. This is Gillian Hick's first book, but will no doubt be the first of many in the James Herriot mould.' -- Countryman'An enjoyable light-hearted look behind the scenes at the world of veterinary medicine. Buy it for a would-be veterinary student or anyone who comes from a farming background - it's sure to please.' -- The Irish WorldIt's an engaging account of the situations she encounters where the humans are often more problematic than the animals, particularly the guys who want to know where the real vet is.' -- The Irish Independent * Irish Independent *'Lively sense of humour, and a pleasant, easy-going writing style. Animal lovers will be well-pleased with her pacy anecdotes' -- Irish Examiner * The Irish Examiner *'Gillian is not afraid to tell of her failures, nor is she ashamed to admit to shedding a few tears from time to time. There is nothing boastful or egotistical. It is very well written in an easy-flow style, and it would make a lovely ... present for an animal lover, especially one who does not object to gory details.' -- Irish Farmer's Journal

Book SynopsisMarginal Comment, which attracted keen and widespread interest on its original publication in 1994, is the remarkable memoir of one of the most distinguished classical scholars of the modern era. Its author, Sir Kenneth Dover, whose academic publications included the pathbreaking book Greek Homosexuality (1978, reissued by Bloomsbury in 2016), conceived of it as an experimental' autobiography ruthlessly candid in retracing the full range of the author's experiences, both private and public, and unflinching in its attempt to analyse the entanglements between the life of the mind and the life of the body.Dover's distinguished career involved not only an influential series of writings about the ancient Greeks but also a number of prominent positions of leadership, including the presidencies of Corpus Christi College, Oxford, and the British Academy. It was in those positions that he became involved in several high-profile controversies, including the blocking of an honoraryTrade ReviewSir Kenneth Dover was both one of the 20th century's most brilliant classicists and a far from merely academic protagonist in at least two major intellectual scandals - about which he laid bare his heart as well as his head. Book Synopsis''I loved this book, I was moved by this book and now I will share this book with my own mother.'' Elizabeth Gilbert, author of Eat, Pray, Love. From the New York Times best-selling author of The Middle Place comes a new memoir that examines the bond between mothers and daughters. Kelly Corrigan''s mother summarised the the division of labour in her family as: ''Your father''s the glitter, but I''m the glue.'' This meant nothing to Kelly, who left her childhood sure that her mum would be nothing more than background for the rest of Kelly''s life. After college, she took off see things and Become Interesting. In a matter of months her savings had dwindled and she needed a job. And because although it is far from Kelly's dream job, she is a good person and she wants to do nice things for the family. I loved the adage , Things happen when you leave the house, but by the end it seemed that you don't have to leave the house, as long as you've already left the country. Evan, I'm looking at you boy. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, finishing it in under 48 hours. It can be hard, sometimes, to care that much about someone else's life, their personal-to-them details that don't mean much to you, but the author got me so invested in this book I needed to know what happened to all the featured characters. The ending, in particular the epilogue itself, made me weep and I was sorry for the way some of it turned out, though not surprised. I too have traveled the world and made great friends along the way, but I'd be at a loss to tell you where they are and what they're doing now, Facebook updates aside. * The Book Bag *It's easy to see how Corrigan has become a best-selling author: she has an immensely likeable voice... while it's "heart-warming it's also perceptive. * Sunday Herald *
