Luath Press Ltd Playing for the Hoops: The George McCluskey Story
Book SynopsisHow did George McCluskey become one of Celtic F.C.’s most memorable football players? What binds the fans and players and creates this strong sense of belonging? And what does the Irish diaspora have to do with Celtic F.C.? George McCluskey was one of the key strikers for the Hoops in the ‘70s and ‘80s, a successful time in the club’s history. He did not only score for his team, but changed the entire game in favour of Celtic more than once. In this account of his life story told by his close friend Aidan Donaldson, George McCluskey is praised as the embodiment of the Celtic spirit. His individual history is intertwined with the history and mentality of the club. However, George McCluskey did not only influence Celtic F.C. but also other clubs he played for and the people he has met during his life. This book takes you on a journey through the development of the club from its very beginning, as well as exploring the evolution of football in general. How did we get from football legends like George McCluskey to football celebrities like David Beckham? What did professional football look like back then, what constitutes it nowadays? This timely book will appeal not only to Celtic supporters, but to anyone interested in the development of professional football. His exuberant celebration depicted on the cover of the book remains iconic in the eyes of Celtic supporters today. Luath Press Ltd Another Bloody Saturday: A Journey to the Heart
Book SynopsisThis is a book celebrating all that is great with the game of football, as seen through the eyes of clubs and fans rarely bothered by satellite television cameras and the riches of the elite game, a vibrant world of humour, warmth and friendship worth far more than all the wealth of the Premier League. Why do people head out on windswept Saturday afternoons and wet Wednesday evenings watch lower and non-league teams play when they could watch Premier League football from the comfort of their living rooms? Does an international match between two countries that technically don’t exist have any meaning? Why do some people go to so much trouble volunteering to support clubs which run on a shoestring budget and are lucky to get even a glimpse of the limelight? Over the course of a season, Mat Guy set out to explore the less glamorous side of the beautiful game, travelling the backwaters of football across the length and breadth of the country – and beyond. He watched Bangor as they were cheerfully thrashed by Reykjavik’s UMF Stjarnan, was absolutely won over by the women’s game, and found a new team to love in Accrington Stanley. From Glasgow to Northern Cyprus, Bhutan to the Faroe Islands, Mat discovered the same hope, sense of community, and love of the game that first led him to a life in the stands at Salisbury FC’s Victoria Park, where his own passion for football was formed.Trade ReviewThe amazing story is a must read for any walk of life not just football fans. You could say we have adopted each other in a short space of time, its a great portrait of Accrington Stanley Football club and hopefully when this publication hits the world our club can gain more support like Mat. - Nick Westwell, Chairman, Official Accrington Stanley Supporters ClubTable of ContentsContents Acknowledgements 7 Introduction 9 1 Bangor City v UMF Stjarnan 13 2 Swindon Town v Southampton 20 3 HB Tórshavn v Skála 28 4 Wales Women v England Women 47 5 Cowes Sports v Yate Town 54 6 Accrington Stanley v Tranmere Rovers 61 7 Northampton Town v Accrington Stanley 71 8 Aldershot Town v Bristol Rovers 77 9 Manchester City Ladies v Arsenal Ladies 83 10 Partick Thistle v St Johnstone 89 11 Tibet v North Cyprus 96 12 Wimbledon v Dagenham & Redbridge 121 13 England Women v Germany Women 128 14 Portsmouth v Accrington Stanley 134 15 Yeovil Town v Accrington Stanley 141 16 Lymington Town v Brockenhurst 146 17 Downton v Amesbury Town 152 18 Corinthian v Beckenham Town 158 19 Eastleigh v Torquay United 163 20 Plymouth Argyle v Bury 169 21 Sri Lanka v Bhutan 176 22 Accrington Stanley v York City 187 23 Lydd Town v Lewisham Borough 195 24 Accrington Stanley v Carlisle United 201 25 Dagenham & Redbridge v Accrington Stanley 208 26 The End of the Road 214

Book SynopsisFollowing his first book, Another Bloody Saturday: A Journey to the Heart and Soul of Football, Mat Guy continues his exploration of the ‘beautiful game’ in Minnows United; an ode to the unsung heroes of football matches taking place out of the limelight, all over the world. From little known teams within the UK, to teams representing countries that, to most of the world, don’t even exist, Mat Guy travels to remote parts of the globe to experience football not only on the fringes of the pitch, but on the fringes of the world. On his travels, he watches matches in Iceland, interviews members of the Tibetan Women’s Football team, explores the impact of football in war-torn Palestine and explores the unsung heroes in the football clubs present throughout the length of the UK. What he finds is countries transcending the game itself and instead building communities, lifelines and friendship with football at the centre.Trade Review.

Luath Press Ltd Stand by your Reds: An uncompromising history of
Book SynopsisStand By Your Reds, written by award-winning sports journalist Bryan Cooney, takes readers to locations where few have ventured – notably, the sacrosanct dressing room and those secretive corridors of power. This engaging narrative, built from a chronology of forensic interviews, ranges from the fifties to the present and tells the stories of an idiosyncratic team and an inveterate fan. Although it never neglects the triumphs, it refuses to ignore the turbulences. Cooney features: The incendiary reign of Eddie Turnbull, manager, martinet; Stuart Kennedy – the first player to front up Furious Fergie; Why Jim Bett was unable to forgive the directors; Steve Paterson makes an extraordinary drinking debut; Leigh Griffiths – why he was the one who got away; The loneliest, most intimidating sacking of Milne’s life; and McInnes reveals what makes him really see red. Stand Free. Stand By Your Reds. Enjoy.Trade ReviewWaspish, insightful and in turns affectionate and critical of his club Bryan Cooney's Stand By Your Reds is an unashamedly biased, informed and boisterous account of one fan's decades-long marriage to the Dons. – Michael Grant, The Times 'I was attracted to this book because, not only does it chart the history of the Dons through the words of those who have been close to the action since the 1950s - eg: an enlightening meeting with Bobby Wishart - it is set alongside the remarkable and often chaotic career of a journalist who reached the very top in his chosen discipline. Bryan Cooney's incisive and penetrating questions to a wide range of former players, as well as to the club's current chairman Stewart Milne and manager Derek McInnes, are honest and the producers of revelatory answers. Cooney may be a fan, but he is not one to fall for the sanitised version of events nor the answers the PR men would rather went into print. For all that, there is a clear love from the author for a team he has followed since childhood and his clear expertise as an interviewer offers us an intriguing and entertaining read. This is an important addition to the best books on Scottish football.' – Frank Gilfeather, Sky Sports

Luath Press Ltd Home Game: The story of the Homeless World Cup
Book SynopsisAn estimated 100 million people worldwide are homeless. 1.6 billion live in sub-standard housing. But how can such a simple game like football tackle such a complex problem? Mel Young and Peter Barr tell the story of the million homeless people in 70 countries who have taken part in the Homeless World Cup since it was founded in 2003 and the positive impact it has on the players and everyone else involved, including spectators. From refugees to drug addicts, orphans and the poorest of the poor, to homeless people from the world's richest countries, we read about the moving human drama behind the event and find out how a ball can change the world. Home Game provides an insight into the birth of the Homeless World Cup and how it has become such a global phenomenon, by looking at more than just facts. It shows how the power of sport can help excluded people transform their own lives and how the event has transformed attitudes to homelessness.Trade ReviewWhen people have a bad deal in life and things haven't been going their way, one of the ways they can get self-esteem back is through sport. The Homeless World Cup does that, and it also puts on the agenda that homelessness is a global issue. We all love football and we all hate homelessness – it's a no brainer. – Irvine Welsh Novelist and Ambassador for the Homeless World Cup All over the world, we've got to end homelessness. Everyone should have a home. It's a right and not a privilege. People treat the homeless as if they're sub-human. In order to overcome this discrimination, we have to unite against homelessness as we did when we fought apartheid. – Archbishop Desmond Tutu, speaking at the Homeless World Cup in Cape Town (2006)

Temple University Press,U.S. Long Distance Love: A Passion for Football
Book SynopsisSince he was a young adult, Grant Farred has wandered the world. Born in South Africa, his own personal growth was fueled by dreams of English football, as a player, and then, when age and reality set in, as a fan. Coming to the United States at a still young age, Farred still loved football -- especially Liverpool -- and watched it from afar. Writing about his experience, Farred shares with the reader his experience growing up colored in South Africa, moving to England, and finally to the US, and how his passion for football kept company with his many moves. Along the way, he talks about the contradictions of football; how race and class politics mix on and off the pitch; how Farred's own ideas about what it means to be a colonial subject is both reinforced and liberated by the idea of football, and how players can serve as gods and mosnters. Trade Review"A fascinating exploration of a sporting obsession conducted across continents and political divides. Grant Farred's narrative shows how sport both transcends and embodies politics, how close you can get and how far away you will always remain from your sporting heroes. Just as American businessmen have started to buy into English soccer in order to profit from its global appeal, this book provides a powerful explanation of the breadth and depth of the passion that the game can evoke." Stefan Szymanski, Cass Business School, London "That Farred writes well about football is beyond debate. He brings a distinctive passion to the topic along with a wealth of analytic insights that will please readers versed in the rich lore of the sport and alert to its growing status as an exemplary vehicle of globalization." Andrew Ross, New York University "More than a love letter to his beloved Liverpool Football Club, this is a journey into the present, from Farred's early years as an outcast in apartheid South Africa through Videla's Argentina and Franco's Spain to the docklands of Liverpool. It is a journey as much spiritual as temporal by a long-distance fan who reads like a latter-day Bill Shankly, albeit with the style and sophistication of a scholar." Bill Murray, author of The World's game: A History of Soccer and The Old Firm: Sectarianism, sport and society in Scotland "Remarkable...In delightfully exuberant prose, Farred recounts a passion that, for him, borders on religion... Long Distance Love is a playful -- yet no less brilliant -- work of political theory; its contribution to political thought comes from making such hopeful statements without compromising the immoderate passions that sports fandom indulge." University of Tennessee Press Soccer Frontiers: The Global Game in the United
Book SynopsisThe early history of soccer in the United States has received relatively little scholarly attention. While the sport's failure to make cultural inroads has been the source of much reflection and retrospection, other pastimes such as baseball, basketball, and American football have been covered far more extensively. Soccer Frontiers helps to fill this gap and correct the widespread notion that soccer was unfamiliar in the United States before the late twentieth century.Editors Chris Bolsmann and George N. Kioussis's collection sheds light on America's little-known soccer history by focusing on the game's presence in major American cities between 1863 and 1913. As waves of immigrants arrived and American cities began to industrialize and become sizable cultural hubs, soccer, too, began to flourish. With essays focused on the years between the Civil War and World War I—a period which saw the creation of both the English Football Association and the US Soccer Federation—this volume also offers diverse regional representation, moving from New England to the South to the West Coast.Soccer Frontiers seeks to identify the distinctive yet understudied traits of American soccer, thereby contributing an important missing piece to the broader puzzle of American sport history.

Edward Elgar Publishing Ltd Handbook on the Economics of Professional
Book SynopsisIn this comprehensive Handbook, John Goddard and Peter Sloane present a collection of analytical contributions by internationally regarded scholars in the field, which extensively examine the many economic challenges facing the world's most popular team sport. The Handbook is naturally divided into four parts: the product market, the labour market, country studies of individual leagues and policy issues. The authors explore why so many football clubs face financial difficulties despite the fact that attendances have risen in many countries, and television and commercial income has increased dramatically. They explain that the labour market is central to understanding these issues, due to trends such as increased bargaining power for the leading players, the acceleration of migration, and the internationalization of the market for footballing talent at the top level. There is, however, diversity across countries as shown in the six cases of England, France, Italy, The Netherlands, the USA and Japan. Finally, the authors consider the policy issues, including the betting market, refereeing and corruption. This Handbook will appeal to sports economists, as well as those working in football governing bodies and individual clubs, sports journalists, and students of business.Contributors: W. Liverpool University Press Football and Nation Building in Colombia
Book SynopsisAn Open Access edition of this book is available on the Liverpool University Press website and the OAPEN library as part of the Opening the Future project with COPIM.This book explores the pivotal role that football played as part of Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos’ national unity project centred on the peace process with the FARC. Football has huge political and social capital in Latin America, and has often been rhetorically deployed by governments for various ends; rarely, however, has football’s power and potential been used in such a deliberate, strategic and active way towards a national peace process and targeted such enduring divisions that have historically impeded a sense of a united nation and national identity. Football in Colombia is understood popularly as one of the few things capable of uniting the country, a belief that Santos seized upon as the national team had a successful campaign in the 2014 World Cup. This first book on Colombian football in English explores previous iterations of football nationalism in the country, including the El Dorado and ‘Narcofootball’ eras, before analysing Santos’ three-pronged strategy empowering professional and amateur football, including the use of political speeches and Twitter, legislation and public policy, and Sport for Development and Peace campaigns, with a particular focus on football in the FARC demobilisation and reincorporation camps following the historic peace agreement.Table of ContentsGlossaryTable and illustrations indexIntroductionChapter 1: Football and nation in Latin AmericaChapter 2: ‘Football is the only thing that unites us’: A history of football nationalism in ColombiaChapter 3: ‘#VamosColombia’: The footballization of Colombia and nation-building by Santos through speeches and tweetsChapter 4: ‘The route for action’: Football-specific legislation and public policyChapter 5: Football for peace: football-based government SDP campaigns towards nation buildingConclusion: #OneCountryOnAPitch?AcknowledgementsReferencesNewspapers and WebsitesFilms and VideosPersonal Interviews

Edward Elgar Publishing Ltd The Economics of Association Football
Book SynopsisThe football industry has long been the subject of theoretical and empirical analysis by economists. A study of the economics of football throws up a range of intriguing questions - from what determines the level of attendance at football matches to how efficient football managers are in producing team performance, given the playing resources available. This important collection considers these and other questions - such as: What drives the transfer value of players? How has the changing structure of football's labour market affected sporting and financial outcomes? How effective have football leagues been in maintaining competitive balance? Do football clubs seek to maximise profits? How predictable are football matches? Is the football betting market efficient? This authoritative two volume collection pulls together the work of leading sports economists over the last five decades to answer these and other questions using consumer theory, labour economics, industrial organisation and a range of other theoretical insights combined with econometric analysis. These innovative volumes bring together a careful synthesis of applied economics that will be of interest to all those concerned with analysing the real world.Trade Review‘The Economics of Association Football has a well-deserved spot on my bookshelf. In a technically competent and eminently readable style, with many new insights, Professor Gerrard provides the essential converge (demand, supply, labor, league structure, industrial performance) and much more. We get the first comprehensive treatment of betting market efficiency determined by actual match outcomes. And we are all better off from his impressive comparison of open leagues (promotion and relegation) and closed leagues (North American style). In the vernacular "a master on the sports business pitch scores a clear goal".' -- Rodney D.
