  • Bolihua: Chinese Reverse Glass Painting from the

Hirmer Verlag Bolihua: Chinese Reverse Glass Painting from the

Book SynopsisIn this publication the sinologist Rupprecht Mayer presents 143 Chinese reverse glass paintings from a private collection in southern Germany. Traditional motifs of happiness, scenes from plays and novels, landscapes, Chi na’s entrance into modernity, and the changing image of the Chinese woman define the central motifs. Production of reverse glass paintings began in Canton in the 18th century, of which only those that found their way to the West are known today. After th e end of exports in the middle of the 19th century this decorative art continued to enjoy popularity in China, but only very few of the many fragile paintings in Chinese households have survived the turmoil of wars and disruptions of the 19th and 20th cent uries. Reverse glass painting fell into oblivion in China, with no collections in museums and very few private collectors. This first study in the West presents the beauty of this traditional art in all of its facets.

Book Synopsis‘The World in Miniature’ was a popular series of illustrated, pocket-sized books. The series was originally produced by Rudolph Ackermann, a renowned London bookseller and publisher in the early nineteenth century. The series continued for several years from its launch in 1821 and was completed in 43 volumes. The series introduced a Western readership to the manners, character, customs, fashion, history, religion etc. of peoples from distant lands. This collection includes a facsimile reprint of seven volumes covering Asiatic and Pacific countries: Japan, China, the Philippines, Indonesia, Hawaii, the Micronesian/Polynesian islands, and New Zealand.Frederic Shoberl, the editor and author of the original series, compiled his volumes by collecting information from the latest contemporary travel writing. He intended to provide objective views of, and facts on, the cultures of the countries covered by the series. However, the (mis)representations in each book often reflected exotic Western dreams of ‘the East’. Indeed, the distorted images of ‘undeveloped’ societies in some of the colour plates are a rich source of visual information for those studying the history of Orientalism.Table of ContentsVolume 1 Japan: containing illustrations of the character, manners, customs, religion, dress, amusements, commerce, agriculture, etc. of the people of that empire (The world in miniature / edited by Frederic Shoberl) Printed for R. Book SynopsisJosiah Conder (1852–1920), also known as Kondoru-sensei, was hired by the Meiji Japanese government as the first professor of architecture for the Imperial College of Engineering (now Faculty of Engineering, University of Tokyo). After receiving the Soane Medallion Prize of the RIBA he arrived in Japan in 1877, spending the rest of his life there. Often called the ‘father of Japanese architecture’, he established the education of architecture in Japan and most of his graduates played essential roles in the development of modern Japan's architecture. He played a leading role in developing Tokyo as an urban city of Western style, and designed numerous public buildings, including the Rokumeikan, which became a symbol of Westernisation in the Meiji period, as well as Mitsubishi 1-gokan, Nicholai-do, Kyu-Iwasakitei, which are considered landmark buildings of Japanese architecture. This collection gathers together and reproduces in facsimile 65 of Josiah Conder’s most significant writings related to Japanese architecture, arts and culture. A folio volume of Paintings and Studies by Kawanabe Kyosai,is also included, reproduced in the original size with illustrations and full colour plates, as well as an album of Dr Conder’s photographs and illustrations. Dr Conder’s obituaries appeared in newspapers and journals and these too are included. Together, the material collated for this collection makes it an indispensable resource for any student or scholar of Japanese art and culture.Table of ContentsVolume 1: Architecture and Japanese Landscape Gardening1) RIBA Soane Medallion Prize in 18761. ‘Prize Designs at the Institute of Architects’ *, The Builder, 18 March 18762. ‘RIBA Soane Medallion Prize Drawings, 1876 – Design for a Country House, By J. Book SynopsisBeginning with the 12,000-year-old cave paintings of Bhimbetka, up to the Bah’ai House of Worship, a blinding masterpiece of 20th-century engineering and design, the wealth of creative genius, brilliant skill and endeavour of its people are evident in India’s man-made wonders. Between the soaring medieval temples of the South and dramatically perched Buddhist monasteries of the North; the uniquely ornamented stepwells of the West and the grand Victoria Memorial, a symbol of British supremacy in the East, lie massive forts, fairy-tale palaces, tombs of Sultans, ruined ancient cities, statuesque cathedrals, and of course, the resplendent Taj Mahal. Along with these are the wonders bestowed on India by nature. In a country blessed with astoundingly diverse ecology and terrain, these range from the mighty Himalayan peaks of Nanda Devi and Kanchenjunga to the elephant-inhabited lush tropical forests of Periyar, and from the pristine-white island beaches of Lakshadweep to the tiger-infested delta of two legendary rivers: the Ganga and the Brahmaputra. Showcased in this book, in a feast of lavish colour photographs and lucid text, are 100 fabulous destinations that evoke the wonder that is India.

Holo Books The Arbitration Press Chinese Footprints: Exploring Women's History in

Book SynopsisThe writing of history used to concentrate on narrative, analysis or theory. The historian stayed out of sight. This book is part of a more recent trend. Here, Susanna Hoe discusses her relationship to her material, the processes of research and writing, and her characters. She does so by exploring and sometimes comparing, the lives of Chinese and western women who have lived in China, Hong Kong and Macau, and links them not only to herself but also to contemporary women's issues, human rights and colonialism. "Chinese Footprints" is about the practice of history. The approach and style make it both accessible and teachable. The characters include 1930's civil and women rights campaigners Shi Liang, China's Minister of Justice 1949 to 1959, Agnes Smedley and Stella Benson, autobiographical writer Xiao Hong, revolutionary Soong Ching Ling, traveller Ella Maillart, philanthropist Clara Ho Tung, and Clara Elliot, who was part of the story of Hong Kong's cession to Britain in 1841.

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisThis book provides a comprehensive examination of the socio-cultural and political context of modern China in terms of its interaction with America and the West, focusing on the influence of the well-known Chinese writer and intellectual Lin Yutang (1895-1976). Offering a unique study of the life and works of Lin Yutang, it highlights his intellectual legacy in modern China and considers how his cross-cultural life and ideas embodied the modern Chinese cultural experience. It notably focuses on Lin’s reputation as an outspoken critic of the infringement of human rights during the rise of the Communist regime in China, but also on his rediscovery of Chinese cultural resources. At a time when China’s cultural contributions are increasingly relevant worldwide, this book contributes to ongoing critical reflections of Chinese modernity, particularly in terms of its intellectual legacies, but also to a renewed understanding of the cross-cultural interactions between China and America and a re-opening the dialogue and search for a new cultural understanding. 10 in stock

Book SynopsisAs Singapore is constantly reinventing itself, this book is a timely publication. After all, anything on contemporary Singapore that doesn't include the Marina Bay Sands' iconic towers, Gardens by the Bay and the new Business District extension is hopelessly out of date. Yet, this book is much more than a round-up of Singapore's new urban cityscapes. Rather, it traces the development of the city-state, showing how so much of the old has been retained and celebrated alongside the new. In addition to an assessment of the downtown core, chapters include an analysis of Singapore's eco credentials as it strives to become a truly green City within a Garden; how its varied population contributes to its success (and how the various peoples came to its shores); a sober reflection on World War II and Occupation, and reminders thereof; a showcase of all things stylishly Singaporean; and finally, a short look back in time with a selection of evocative black-and-white photographs to Singapore's early days as a colonial city.Beautifully photographed by Danish photographer, Jacob Termansen, with insightful texts by Kim Inglis, this is a must-have for anybody interested in the history and culture of Singapore.Table of Contents1) The Making of a Modern Nation2) The Garden City3) East Meets West4) War and Peace5) Singapore Style6) This was Singapore

A shadowy network known as the Ghadar or Mutiny Movement plotted an Indian uprising that spilled across Britain’s Eastern Empire. In 1915, the snug settlement of Singapore thus faced a mutiny by its garrison of British Indian Army soldiers or sepoys. Stoked by Indian rebels based in California, Sikh activists on a migrant voyage to Canada to contest its race laws, a German sea raider, and renegades preaching Muslim holy war, the 1915 Singapore sepoy mutiny fused several plots against imperial power in the region. This book reveals the hidden history of the mutiny and exposes the forces that converged on the small island en-route to the revolt against the British Empire in India. The story of the men and women behind the world-wide rebellion and the Singapore mutiny is brought to life in this thrilling non-fiction narrative that spotlights the legacy of the forgotten uprisings.

The Last Siamese is a delightful read." —Chris Baker, co-author with Pasuk Phongpaichit of A History of Thailand; "The author presents a set of essays about individuals across the political spectrum ... written to entertain as much as to instruct, as it should be with an expert raconteur like Teddy Spha Palasthira." —Grant Evants, Asian Review of Books; "The Last Siamese shows how personal character can shape history, through the defining events of a dozen charismatic lives. Teddy has a keen eye for the hidden details of history and has written a charming book." —Philip Cornwel-Smith, author of Very Thai: Everyday Popular Culture; "Teddy's latest book offers sketches of 12 different figures... Book SynopsisImagine a young man of the in the mid-19th century named Benjamin Cook, the nephew of Thomas Dunman, Superintendent of Police in Singapore. Cook went to Singapore aged 20 in 1854 and his series of 14 letters and accompanying drawings were addressed to his friend Harry Russell in London, telling of his experiences and persuading him to join him. The events and situations described in the letters are historically accurate, down to the dramatic events of the Chinese Riots and the Commission of Enquiry into the affairs of Rajah Sir James Brooke of Sarawak. John Bastin, the authority on early Singapore history, says: The letters are cleverly conceived and present an authentic view of life in Singapore in 1854-1855.
