Lexington Books Policy Metamorphosis in China A Case Study of
Book SynopsisThis book delineates the history of minban/private education in mainland China, particularly its current form. It studies the process of policy implementation in the domain of minban education, on the basis of which the Chinese central-local relationships and the contemporary model of state governance are analyzed.Trade ReviewDing's work is an unusual contribution to the literature about contemporary China. Using private education policies in Shanghai as a microcosm, and with a wealth of field data, she delineates a typical policy processes in China. The book explains some of the major puzzles about China held by those who are outside the system. In particular, she has uncovered the paradox between the apparent distortions during policy implementation on the one hand, and the general progress achieved by such policies on the other. Ding's work starts a new perspective of understanding China. -- Kai-ming Cheng, University of Hong KongThis closely researched study of private schooling should interest those interested not only in Chinese education but also in Chinese policy implementation. -- Daniel Levy, SUNY Distinguished Professor, University at AlbanyThe book is based on a well-designed qualitative study with 65 in-depth interviews in 2001 and 2004. Ding tries to figure out the logic of policy implementation in Shanghai as an “insider” while having a clear awareness of the dilemma of studying a policy issue in her own culture. She makes the best use of her identity as an insider, not only as a Chinese but as someone who knows some “inside” stories concerning the issue interviewed. * Frontiers of Education in China *Table of ContentsChapter 1: Introduction Chapter 2: A New Framework for Understanding Chapter 3: Minban Education I: The Nation Chapter 4: Minban Education II: Shanghai Chapter 5: Student Admission and Fee Charging Chapter 6: Converted Schools Chapter 7: The Model of Structural Fracturation

Lexington Books Chinas Quiet Rise Peace Through Integration
Book SynopsisChina's Quiet Rise examines the possibility of China's peaceful rise and policy implications for integrating China with the global community. The insightful analyses provided by the experts of China studies should be of great interest to scholars, students and policy makers.Trade ReviewThe analysis is sharp, the assessment is balanced, and the insights are profound. A must-read for anyone who wants to understand the nature, prospects, and implications of China's rise and its goal of the unification with Taiwan. -- He Li, Merrimack CollegeChina's Quiet Rise tackles the critical topic of China's ascendancy. It sheds light on China's impressive military modernization, intensifying participation in global, regional, and bilateral economic agreements, and expanding presence in regions of the world such as Latin America. Contrary to those who raise alarm about China's political, military, and ideational challenge, the book's contributors reveal that capabilities may not tell us the whole story, that China has been moderate in many of its dealings, and flexible in a multitude of trade negotiations. While countries such as India watch their giant neighbor warily, China has been sensitive to the need to assuage the fears of others through soft power and other means. On top of these contributions, the book delves quite deeply into the politico-economy of cross-Strait relations, giving its readers a rich appreciation of rising China's integration on a regional level and the possible pacifying effects of such integration. -- Jean-Marc F. Rowman & Littlefield Like Rolling Thunder The Air War in Vietnam
Book SynopsisUntil now there was no overview of the air war in Vietnam and the debate it has producedâa debate in which some historians argue that the U.S. could have won the war if it had employed more air power. Frankum fills this gap by deftly tying together the air campaigns over North Vietnam, South Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia.Trade ReviewFrankum provides a concise and insightful summary of the complex and contentious issues of the air war in Southeast Asia. If one has time for but one book on the air war, I strongly recommend that volume be Like Rolling Thunder. -- James R. Reckner, director, The Vietnam Center, Texas Tech UniversityA concise, comprehensive account of the air war in Southeast Asia, packed with data, that covers all theaters of the war. -- John Prados, National Security ArchiveA timely and judicious account, Like Rolling Thunder skillfully addresses both the successes and failures of one of the more controversial aspects of America's war in Southeast Asia. -- John Ernst, Morehead State University, author of Forging a Faithful AlliancePresents a concise history of the air war in Vietnam. * Forecast *Ronald B. Frankum, Jr., . . . offers a compelling, readable, and concise overview of a complex, intricate, and long air war, perhaps the dominant aspect of America's longest war. . . . Much of the earlier writing on air war, mine included, reflected passions attached to the controversies we lived. Frankum's writing—thankfully—is devoid of such emotion. Like Rolling Thunder offers a good overview of a complex story bolstered by statistics, informative maps, photographs of the primary weapon systems, and a useful glossary to make sense of the abundant acronyms. Rowman & Littlefield In the Footsteps of Marco Polo A Companion to the
Book SynopsisTrade ReviewDenis Belliveau and Francis O'Donnell followed Marco Polo's route through Afghanistan and twenty other countries, traveling 33,000 miles over two years, in jeeps, trains, and rickshaws, on horse and camel. They are certainly the first to retrace Polo's steps entirely by land and sea, all this without resorting to helicopters or airplanes. * Smithsonian Magazine *The stunning photographs in this elegant book should please even the most casual reader, while the authors’ unpretentious observations will satisfy those who want to know more about a still alien world. A travel/adventure book rather than a study of Marco Polo the man or a history of his travels, this volume deserves many readers. Warmly recommended. * Library Journal *Alongside Belliveau and O'Donnell's enthusiastic narrative are marvelous full-color photos that bring the travelogue to vivid life. * Publishers Weekly *We are given stunning proof of Marco Polo's essential veracity, for the geographic realities and enduring ethnographic facts overwhelm any doubt. . . . They reflect poignantly on the timeless nature of the many Asian cultures they encountered, so many of them threatened by endless conflict. . . . When what you experience exceeds what you can imagine, the physical and spiritual costs can be very high. Is it worth it? Get this book, go along for the wild ride, and see for yourself. * Bookpage *If you missed the PBS special, you can still join the authors on their two-year, 25,000-mile journey that retraced the route of young Polo, his father and his uncle. The text is illuminating, the photos are revealing. * Sacramento Bee *An extraordinary travel book. . . . This is a book well worth reading, filled as it is with adventurous stories and wonderful photographs taken by Belliveau. . . . The book is a touching record of the beauty and charity of the human spirit, a charity undeterred by want, hunger, war, and grief. * Foreword Reviews *[A] lush, stimulating, and often thrilling chronicle. . . . The text is well written and highly informative, and it conveys a sense of wonder and excitement, enhanced by hundreds of excellent photographs that reveal the past and present diversity and richness of the cultures. . . . This excellent work and companion to the public-television film is a valuable introduction to the life and times of one of the world's great adventurers. * Booklist *Stunningly evocative photography. . . . Chapters are framed with compelling and/or illuminating adventures along the way. . . . Historical/literary referencing is braided with camera-eye accounts of the Americans crossing borders illegally, getting caught in a firefight between warlords, speaking carefully with tribal chieftains and brawling with drunken Russian soldiers in the dining room of the Hotel Alootoo in Bishtek, Kyrgyzstan. All in all, a blend of fun, learning and thrills. * Macon Telegraph *Belliveau and O'Donnell undertook a mad quest to trace the route of the 13th-century Italian explorer step by step. . . . Belliveau's incredible photographs . . . are worth lingering over and revisiting. The text is . . . fascinating when the travelers describe the people they meet along the road. * Flagpole Magazine *An extraordinary initiative and travel experience. They set out to demonstrate that Marco Polo actually spent twenty-five years in Asia and reported first-hand about all the wonders he had seen, and I think that after Francis' and Denis' experience few people could still have doubts in this regard. -- Stefano Carboni, Metropolitan Museum of ArtIt was the best-documented journey of its time, inspiring the imaginations and ambitions of countless adventurers, including Christopher Columbus. Now we, too, can follow in the footsteps of Marco Polo, with guides as vividly exciting and engaging as Marco himself. With both their film and this book Denis and Francis have recreated what Joseph Campbell would have applauded as 'The Hero's Journey.' Come take it yourself—and you'll never turn back. -- Bill Moyers

Edinburgh University Press Turkish Myth and Muslim Symbol
Book SynopsisTurks ruled the Middle East for a millennium and eastern Europe for many centuries and it is an undoubted fact that they moulded the lands under their dominion. It is therefore something of a paradox that the history of Turkey and aspects of the identity and role of the Turks, both as Muslims and as an ethnic group, still remain little known in the west and undervalued in the Arabic and Persian-speaking worlds. This book contributes to historical scholarship on Turkey by focusing on its key foundational myth, the battle of Manzikert in 1071--the Turkish equivalent of the battle of Hastings. Manzikert destroyed the hold of Christian Byzantium on eastern Turkey and opened the whole country to the spread of Islam, a process completed with the fall of Constantinople and Trebizond some four centuries later.Translations and a close analysis of all the extant Muslim sources--both Arabic and Persian--which deal with the battle of Manzikert are provided in the book. It also looks at these writings as literary works and vehicles of religious ideology and analyses the ongoing confrontation between the Muslim Turks and Christian Europe and the importance of Manzikert in the formation of the modern state of Turkey since 1923.Trade Review'This original and thought-provoking book operates on several levels ... a captivating read that is a powerful reminder to Western scholars and students of the achievement of Turkish - rather than Arab or Persian - leaders in the history of the Muslim Near East.' -- Jonathan Phillips Times Literary Supplement 'This is a passionate book with an agenda to address the importance of the Turkish contribution to the medieval period ... as well as presenting a superb deconstruction of a historical event in the memory and ideology of centuries of writers.' -- Jonathan Phillips Times Literary Supplement 'This original and thought-provoking book operates on several levels ... a captivating read that is a powerful reminder to Western scholars and students of the achievement of Turkish - rather than Arab or Persian - leaders in the history of the Muslim Near East.' Edinburgh University Press The Road to Iraq
Book SynopsisAhmad presents a social history of the war's leading agents the neoconservatives and shows how this ideologically coherent group of determined political agents used the contingency of 9/11 to overwhelm a sceptical foreign policy establishment, military brass and intelligence apparatus, propelling the US into war.Trade Review'This forcefully argued and meticulously researched book turns out to be enormously relevant to the present moment - Let me reiterate the enormous significance and relevance of The Road to Iraq. It is a work of tremendous intellectual diligence and moral seriousness. We are all indebted to Ahmad for undertaking this major contribution to the debate on one of the central events of this century, whose aftershocks continue to unfold daily, to disastrous effect. With the neocons poised to make a comeback, this book serves as a cautionary tale of bracing urgency. It is a must-read guide to the history of the present.' - Danny Postel, Associate Director of the Center for Middle East Studies, University of Denver, in The Drouth. 'Ahmad, who teaches journalism in the UK and writes for a variety of American and European publications, traces the remarkable history of neoconservatism in minute detail. He demonstrates its consistent role as the voice of cold-war thinking, segueing smoothly from militant anti-Communism of the era of Scoop Jackson (the "Senator from Boeing") to the new opportunities afforded by Islamic fundamentalism since the 1990s.' - James B. Rule, Dissent. 'A superb analysis of how and why a small band of neoconservatives helped push the United States into a disastrous war. Far from being tough-minded patriots, Ahmad reveals them to be deceitful and manipulative self-promoters who remain influential in policy-making circles, despite the enormous cost of their past follies. His analysis is nuanced, his research comprehensive, and the story he tells is profoundly disturbing.' - Stephen Walt, John F. Taylor & Francis Ltd Interpretation and Jurisprudence in Medieval
Book SynopsisAt the time of his death in 1998, at the age of 47, Norman Calder had become the most widely-discussed scholar in his field. This was largely focused on his monograph, Studies in Early Muslim Jurisprudence (Oxford, 1993), which boldly challenged existing theories about the origins of Islamic Law. The present volume of twenty-one of his articles and book chapters represents the full richness and diversity of Calder''s oeuvre, from his initial doctoral research on Shii Islam to his later more philosophical writings on Sunni hermeneutics, in addition to his numerous studies on early Islamic history and jurisprudence. Calder''s pioneering research, which was based on a sensitive reading of medieval texts fully informed by contemporary critical theory, often challenged the established assumptions of the day. He is known in particular for urging a reassessment of widely-held prejudices which underestimated the degree of creativity in medieval Islamic scholarship. Taylor & Francis Ltd The Spiritual Expansion of Medieval Latin
Book SynopsisDuring the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries religious zeal nourished by the mendicantsâ sense of purpose motivated Dominican and Franciscan friars to venture far beyond Europeâs cultural frontiers to spread their Christian faith into the farthest reaches of Asia. Their incredible journeys were reminiscent of heroic missionary ventures in earlier eras and far more exotic than evangelization during the tenth through twelfth centuries, when the western church Christianized Eastern Europe and Scandinavia. This new mission effort was stimulated by a variety of factors and facilitated by the establishment of the Mongol Empire, and, as the fourteenth century dawned, missionaries entertained fervent but vain hopes of success within khanates in China, Central Asia, Persia and Kipchak. The reports these missionaries sent back to Europe have fascinated successive generations of historians who analyzed their travels and struggled to understand their motives and aspirations. It shows vividly that the Communist Party did not come to power riding on the tide of a great revolution that swept across China but it seized the mandate of Heaven as successive imperial dynasties had done in the past – by military conquest.’ * Steve Tsang, Professor of Chinese Studies and Director of the China Institute, SOAS University of London, UK [and author of A Modern History of Hong Kong] *China 1949 is a compelling achievement. First, Hutchings gives a clear, balanced account of the titanic forces that brought to power one of the most important political movements of the 20th century, the Chinese Communist Party. But then, he gives the book a deeply humane and moving heart with accounts of the emotions and dilemmas felt both by those who supported the revolution and those who opposed it. This is history on the grand scale but with a brilliant, observant eye for the complexities that underpin this pivotal event. * Rana Mitter, Director of the University China Centre, University of Oxford, UK, and author of China's Good War: How World War II is Shaping a New Nationalism *‘The Chinese have recently celebrated the 70th anniversary of a revolution which changed the course of world history. Graham Hutchings reveals the extent of the Communist triumph in that epoch-making year, and the countervailing humiliation of the Nationalists. The book is well researched, tells a fascinating story with pace and elegance, and illuminates what is happening in China, Taiwan and Hong Kong today.’ * Simon Scott Plummer, Feature Writer on East Asia for The Times, Diplomatic Correspondent and Chief Foreign Leader Writer for The Daily Telegraph, and frequent reviewer for Times Literary Supplement and The Tablet *An interesting aspect for today's readers is the book's contribution to understanding current issues surrounding China and its place in the world. * China2025.nl (Bloomsbury Translation) *The victory of Chinese Communist forces over those of China’s Nationalist Government in 1949 is one of the great climacterics of the twentieth century. Not only did it define China’s subsequent political trajectory, but it also shaped the futures of Taiwan and Hong Kong. China 1949 provides a vivid picture of the final act in the long-drawn-out struggle for power in China. Drawing on a wide range of private papers, archival and Chinese-language sources, Graham Hutchings has achieved the difficult feat of producing a scholarly history that is also a real page turner. He has an unerring ear for the arresting phrase, and writes with elegance and élan. His pacy narrative, viewed through multiple prisms of a varied cast of protagonists ranging from political and military leaders to ‘ordinary’ individuals, is peppered with piquant detail that brings the unfolding events of 1949 vividly to life. * Bob Ash, Emeritus Professor, SOAS, University of London, UK *Table of ContentsPreface Introduction 1. AltaMira Press,U.S. Appetites and Aspirations in Vietnam
Book SynopsisIn Vietnam during the long nineteenth century from the Tây Son rebellion to the 1920s, individuals negotiated changing interpretations of their culinary choices by their families, neighbors, and governments. What people ate reflected not just who they were, but also who they wanted to be. Appetites and Aspirations in Vietnam starts with the spread of Vietnamese imperial control from south to north, marking the earliest efforts to create a common Vietnamese culture, as well as resistance to that cultural and culinary imperialism. Once the French conquered the country, new opportunities for culinary experimentation became possible, although such experiences were embraced more by the colonized than the colonizers. This book discusses how colonialism changed the taste of Vietnamese fish sauce and rice liquor and shows that state intervention made those products into tangible icons of a unified Vietnamese cuisine, under attack by the French. Vietnamese villagers began to see the power they Trade ReviewAppetites and Aspirations in Vietnam is food studies at its best, but it is also much more. Erica J. Peters demonstrates, with both intellectual elegance and a deeply rooted sense of food, how culinary choices are a marker of historical change. Using a diverse array of sources, she goes against the grain to explore everyday life in Vietnam in the long nineteenth century, affording a penetrating insight into what Vietnamese people wanted to be in a time of economic struggle and colonialism, and into how ordinary people experienced habitus and change, adaptation and contestation, even creativity. Appetites and Aspirations in Vietnam is a gourmet meal that leaves the reader satisfied…. The wide range of narratives of food Peters explores … sheds new light on disparities of gender, ethnicity, and wealth. Food may have been a tool of imperialism; it certainly became a tool of nationalism in modern Vietnam. Nobody would have expected the history of a ‘fusion cuisine’ would tell as much. -- Laurence Monnais, Université de MontréalA reviewer of the wide-ranging Appetites and Aspirations could evaluate this rich study along any number of axes: economic history, the history of imperial and colonial Vietnam, or the history of race and ethnicity, to name a few. Nonetheless, food is most emphatically Peters’s preferred ground and where she anchors her argument that French and Vietnamese used diet to shape radically divergent identities in colonial Indochina….It would be unfair to expect a study so ambitious to succeed equally well on so many fronts….Nonetheless, this fascinating and suggestive narrative of nineteenth-century imperial and colonial Vietnam will appeal to a wide range of general readers and specialists. * H-France Review *Table of ContentsIntroduction Prologue: Hunger and Revolution Chapter 1. Scarecrow Press Historical Dictionary of Vietnam
Book SynopsisVietnam became part of French Indochina in 1887 and did not regain its independence again until after the Vietnam War. However, despite a relatively peaceful two decades the country experienced little economic growth because of conservative leadership policies. In an effort to change this stagnation, Vietnamese authorities have committed to economic liberalization and enacted structural reforms needed to modernize the economy and to produce more competitive, export-driven industries. The third edition of this dictionary focuses on the recent changes and leadership of Vietnam while giving due attention to the earlier kingdoms, the period of French Indochina, the wars for liberation, the Vietnam War, and much more. Hundreds of cross-referenced A to Z dictionary entries are included on political, economic, social and cultural aspects as well as the major cities and geographic features. This book also contains a chronology and introduction that traces Vietnam''s history, as well as a biblTrade ReviewBesides updating entries, this new edition adds material on developments since the publication of the second edition, in 1998, as well as on premodern history and culture... * Booklist *Table of ContentsPart 1 Editor's Foreword Part 2 Preface Part 3 Reader's Notes Part 4 Acronyms and Abbreviations Part 5 Maps Part 6 Chronology Part 7 Introduction Part 8 THE DICTIONARY Part 9 Appendixes Chapter 10 A. Book SynopsisTrade Reviewa very useful reference guide and is recommended... * American Reference Books Annual, March 2008 *This is a superb, authoritative, and comprehensive guide and dictionary, indispensable for pivotal individuals, as well as for events, treaties, even debates in the extraordinary—and extraordinarily revealing—150 years of relations between Japan and the United States. -- Walter LaFeberThe compilers of this volume, John Van Sant, Peter Mauch, and Yoneyuki Sugita have drawn on a wide range of sources, listed in the useful sixteen-page bibliography, to produce this wealth of information on a variety of subject areas. . . . The main value of this publication is to be derived from the rich and comprehensive 243-page body of the dictionary. The entries are written in clear and succinct prose, many of which point the reader in the direction of other related head words that are presented in bold type. . . . [A] practical and welcome resource for those studying U.S.-Japanese relations and an important reference work that should definitely be held by institutions with programs in Asian and American studies. * H-Net: Humanities and Social Science Reviews Online, August 2009 *The Japanese started arriving in America as castaway sailors in the 1840s. By 1853 President Millard Fillmore responded with a commodore, escorted by the biggest battleships in the world, to negotiate trade relationships in Japan. Thus began the complex relationship that developed between the US and Japan, partially based upon "gentlemen's agreements" that excluded the Japanese from the US, and partly based on the threat or reality of war. Working from an initial chronology, these entries describe the people and events that eventually became one of the world's more amicable relationships. Here Junichiro Koizumi expresses his opinion of the US with a denunciation of terrorism at 9/11 followed by a visit to North Korea; here liberal Mike Mansfield impresses conservative Ronald Reagan so much the new president asks Mansfield to retain his post as ambassador to Japan; here we find why Japan's military is even now limited to defense. * Reference and Research Book News, May 2007 *Table of ContentsPart 1 Editor's Foreword Part 2 Acknowledgments Part 3 Reader's Note Part 4 Acronyms and Abbreviations Part 5 Chronology Part 6 Map Part 7 Images Part 8 Introduction Part 9 THE DICTIONARY Part 10 Appendix A United States Presidents and Secretaries of State, 1789-2005 Part 11 Appendix B Japanese Prime Ministers Part 12 Bibliography Part 13 About the Authors

Scarecrow Press Historical Dictionary of Tibet Historical Dictionaries of Asia Oceania and the Middle East
Trade ReviewAlthough most of us are familiar with Tibet as a nation at odds with its powerful neighbor and as the home of the Dali Lama, much of the land’s rich history and diverse culture remains hidden atop the soaring heights of the Himalayan plateau. In this comprehensive dictionary, Powers (Australian National University, Canberra ) and Templeman (Monash University, Melbourne) have given scholars of Tibetan culture and history a rich compendium for future research. The work begins with a listing of terms covered, followed by a highly useful chronology detailing the main events of Tibetan history from the life of the Buddha to the present day. A judicious 49-page introduction presents users with a lucid overview of Tibetan religious and political history as well as a synopsis of its rich, dynamic culture and spectacular geography. The A–Z arranged entries canvass a broad diversity of subjects, including geopolitical relationships, major political leaders, episodes from an expansionist past, and religious figures as well as thematic entries such as Banking and finance, Human rights, Mongolian Buddhism, and Trade. Examples of other entries include Chakrata Project, Foreign relations, Islam, and Tibetan uprising of 2008. The volume concludes with a substantial categorized bibliography for further research into such themes as Tibetan art, history, and literature. The chief obstacle to the volume’s utility lies with the Tibetan language, which, as the authors point out, presents “unusual problems.” The authors have chosen the transliteration system developed by Turrell Wylie, a system they argue “makes it difficult for beginners to pronounce terms properly” because of its equation of Sanskrit letters with the Tibetan letters they resemble. Although this hurdle is easily overcome by subject specialists, it presents a problem for those new to the subject. Nevertheless, with its diversity of topics and clear writing, the volume is essential. * Booklist *Powers (History of Propaganda) and Templeman (New Views of Tibetan Culture) open this premier guide to Tibetan culture and history with a reader’s note, indicating the book’s unifying transliteration standard—the Wylie system—and presenting a glossary of phonetic spellings and Wylie equivalents. Preceded by a chronology, a 49-page introduction that is interspersed with subheadings then offers a substantial overview of Tibetan history, culture, and political tensions. Straightforward entries run several paragraphs and cover the historical figures, locations, dynasties, and events contributing to Tibet’s development. VERDICT While some subject foreknowledge is required to navigate this work, it is the most thorough resource on Tibet now available. * Library Journal *Powers (Australian National Univ.) and Templeman (Monash Univ., Australia) offer a comprehensive dictionary that includes an informative introduction to the history of Tibet's land, people, religion, and politics, and a useful explanation of regional Tibetan language and the Wylie transliteration system. Also featured is an extensive chronology that begins at 27,000 BCE with the early Neolithic period and settlements in Chu bzang, and extends to April 2011, when bLo bzang seng ge was elected second bKa' blon khri pa. Readers also will find a helpful glossary of common phonetic spellings and Wylie transliteration equivalents; a listing of acronyms and abbreviations used throughout the book; and a thorough bibliography that is categorized by numerous subjects, including language and literature, the Mongol empire, and Tibetan borderlands. Black-and-white maps are at the beginning of the book, with black-and-white photographs scattered throughout. More than 1,000 brief alphabetical entries discuss the key events, people, social issues, foreign relations, and policies that make this vast country distinct. This will be a valuable resource for a variety of audiences interested in Tibet or in Asian studies or history. Summing Up: Highly recommended. * CHOICE *Recommended for academic and large public libraries, and those institutions serving populations with ties to that area. * American Reference Books Annual *

Taylor & Francis Ltd Private Fortunes and Company Profits in the India
Book SynopsisThis collection of essays, two of which appear in print for the first time, documents the late Holden Furberâs discovery that private ventures, most manifestly deployed in the âcountry tradeâ between Asian ports, played a major role in the European expansion in India before the age of empire. Furber vividly describes how individual entrepreneurs used their positions with East India Companies to build personal fortunes, and how these private endeavours, for which the English East India Company gave more latitude, ultimately worked to the benefit of British power in India. One of the continuing strengths of his work remains its use of archival sources, not only British, but also other archival records, in particular those of The Netherlands and Scandinavia. The essays also highlight important connections, between chartered and âclandestineâ trade, and piracy; of multinational private investments in the increasingly dominant East India Company; and between the trade of the Indian Ocean and Pacific worlds.Trade Review'This commemorative collection of papers is justified by present interest as well as intrinsic value...Furber shows us how history can be, indeed should be, an art as well as a science, even amid the toil of opening up a new field of study.' The Scottish Historical Review 'Although the last of Holden Furber’s major writings appeared in the mid-1970s, his work has not only been very influential in the past but is still widely consulted. A collection of his essays, with the additional bonus of two pieces never previously published, is therefore most welcome.' The International History Review, Vol. XX, No. 2 'As ever, Variorum has provided a great service to scholars and students by publishing the collected works of a leading historian, in this case Holden Furber (1903”93) who, over the course of a lengthy career, established himself as an authority on European trade and imperialism in Asia during the eighteenth century. Our debt to Variorum and the editor is increased considerably on this occasion, because this collection of 14 articles and papers produced by Furber between 1935 and 1976 is drawn from a wide range of often inaccessible publications and includes two items published here for the first time. We are presented with a body of work which, in its totality, represents a major contribution to analysis of the dynamic forces behind, and the form taken by, the European presence in the East.' Journal of Imperial and Commonwealth History, Vol. 26, No. 3 '... an important book. Full of sympathetic insights, written with enjoyment and scrupulous scholarship, it contains the mature reflections of a master, of his sources and of this craft.' The Mariner's MirrorTable of ContentsContents: An abortive attempt at Anglo-Spanish cooperation in the Far East in 1793; The beginnings of American trade with India 1784-1812; The united company of merchants of England trading to the East Indies 1783-96; Madras in 1787; The overland route to India in the 17th and 18th centuries; The East India Company’s financial records; In the footsteps of a German Nabob: William Bolts in the Swedish archives; Bombay presidency in the mid-18th century; Glimpses of life and trade on the Hugli 1720-1770; Madras Presidency in the mid-18th century; The growth of British power in India 1708-1748; The India trade in the Pacific through two centuries 1600-1800; Major Forbes Ross MacDonald and the Arab world: Britain, India and the Middle East 1791-1798; The history of East India companies: general problems; Index.

Book SynopsisDavid Urch vividly evokes the birth of modern day Bangladesh.Bangladesh became an independent state in 1971.
