  • To the Edge and Back: 1962 India-China War

Pentagon Press To the Edge and Back: 1962 India-China War

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThe saga of 1962 is one of failure at multiple levels. Starting from the failure of the Prime Minister and the government to formulate a coherent national security policy, to the failure of the diplomats to effectively engage and gauge the Chinese. It was a failure on the part of the senior military leadership to provide sound military advice to the political leadership. In fact, they are guilty of ignoring basic military precepts in order to meet political requirements. This book traces the historical background of the boundary dispute and the slow build-up of mistrust, suspicion and acrimony between India and China that started sometime after the `Hindi Chini Bhai Bhai` phase of relationships and resulted in the outbreak of war in October 1962. It documents the course of the battle, where the robust junior leadership and steadfastness of the Indian Jawan are the two factors that stand out as saving grace amidst the overall disaster. Everywhere small bodies of men fought isolated battles under desperate conditions and extreme shortages. In every instance, the junior leaders on the spot led from the forefront, often to their last breath. And the jawans followed their leaders unquestioningly, unhesitatingly and uncomplainingly. Never once were the `Naam, NamakaurNishaan` let down. This was a testimony to the strong espirit de corps forged by the regimental system of the army, which continues to stand the test of time even to date.1,383 soldiers had lost their lives, 1,696 were missing and 3,968 had been captured, of which 36 died in captivity.Written with the lay reader in mind, this book avoids military jargon and can be easily followed by readers without any prior knowledge of military matters . It is suitable for students, youth and others who are interested in learning more about the dispute and the war.

Leuven University Press History of Japanese Art after 1945: Institutions,

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisHistory of Japanese Art after 1945 is a compilation of essays that surveys the development of art in Japan since WWII. The original Japanese work, which has become essential reading for those with an interest in modern and contemporary Japanese art and is a foundational resource for students and researchers, spans a period of 150 years, from the 1850s to the 2010s. Each chapter is dedicated to a specific period and written by a specialist. The English edition first discusses the formation and evolution of Japanese contemporary art from 1945 to the late 1970s, subsequently deals with the rise of the fine art museum from the late 1970s to the 1990s, and concludes with an overview of contemporary Japanese art dating from the 1990s to the 2010s. These three parts are preceded by a new introduction that contextualizes both the original Japanese and the English editions and introduces the reader to the emergence of the concept of art (bijutsu) in modern Japan. This English-language edition provides valuable reading material that offers a deeper insight into contemporary Japanese art. Contributors: Kitazawa Noriaki (editor), Mori Hitoshi (editor), Sato Doushin (editor), Tom Kain (translation editor), Alice Kiwako Ashiwa (translator), Kenneth Masaki Shima (translator), Ariel Acosta (translator) and Sara Sumpter (translator) Translated from the original Japanese edition published with Tokyo Bijutsu, 2014 In cooperation with Art Platform Japan / The Agency for Cultural Affairs, Government of Japan Art Platform Japan is an initiative by the Agency for Cultural Affairs, Government of Japan, to maintain the sustainable development of the contemporary art scene in Japan.Trade Review'Anarchy of the Body' is cited in 'History of Japanese Art After 1945', particularly in the third section of the work where Kuresawa Takemi, professor at the Tokyo University of Technology, discusses the postmodern turn of contemporary Japanese art from 1990 to 2010: Kuresawa goes on to list a number of exhibitions and studies that give insight into the sometimes scattered influence of the 1960s on contemporary Japanese art in the 1990s and beyond. KuraDalaiJee’s work is considered here as a 'masterpiece' that deals, not only with the major figures of performance (such as Hi-Red Center), but also with artists and collectives of lesser fame. • Reproduction of Inequality and Social Exclusion: A Study of Dalits in a Caste Society, Nepal

Springer Verlag, Singapore Reproduction of Inequality and Social Exclusion: A Study of Dalits in a Caste Society, Nepal

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book is a detailed account of how hierarchy has been maintained historically by the Nepali state, affirming the uniqueness of a caste-based social order by bringing outsiders, especially ethnic groups and religious minorities, into the caste fold. Focusing on the contemporary state of Dalits, the community that was and is put at the bottom of a very hierarchical social order in Nepal, the author argues that the traditional caste-based social order is still prevalent in the “new” Nepal even after the recent socio-political and constitutional changes. Illustrated by scientifically employed and interpreted data mainly in the three sectors of education, politics and employment, the book postulates that people who were and are born into the “high caste” still have more access to the resources and opportunities available in society in comparison with those born into the “lower” caste. It further argues that although reservation policies are in place to address social exclusion, these could not bring expected outcomes mainly due to the lack of engagement, if not ignorance, of both dominant groups and the community in the margin. The absence of clarity among political actors on the positive discrimination and affirmative actions has contributed to backtracking the recently created space in line with “inclusive Nepal”. • Springer Verlag, Singapore The Evolution of China’s Anti-Poverty Strategies:

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisThis open access book presents the findings of the author’s 3 decades of studying China’s evolving anti-poverty strategies. It argues that much of the billions that nations spend yearly on economic aid is used inefficiently or to treat the symptoms but not the root causes of poverty. China, however, has evolved an effective sustainable alternative by providing the means for self-reliance to not only relieve economic poverty but also poverty of spirit. As a result, the success of China’s historic war on poverty has been due not only to top-down visionary leadership but also to the bottom-up initiatives of an empowered populace unswervingly united in ending poverty. From 1993 to 2019, the author drove over 200,000 km around China and interviewed hundreds of people from all walks of life as he explored the evolution of China’s anti-poverty strategies from simplistic aid and redistribution, which often engendered dependency and poverty of spirit. Over time, the philosophy shifted to empowerment by fostering self-reliance—or as Chinese put it, “blood production rather than blood transfusion.” The primary method of empowerment was to provide modern infrastructure, “Roads first, then riches,” so rural dwellers in remote Inner Mongolia or the Himalayan heights of Tibet had the same access to markets, jobs and internet for e-commerce as their urban counterparts. People who seized the opportunities and prospered first then used their newfound wealth and experience to help others. The stories in this book include a Tibetan entrepreneur whose family was impoverished in spite of 300 years of service to the Panchen Lama, or the farm girl with 4 years of education who now has several international schools, a biotechnology company and poverty alleviation projects across China, or the photographer who walked 40,000 km through deserts to chronicle the threat of desertification. Their tales underscore how diverse people across China helped make possible China’s success in alleviating absolute poverty and why Chinese are now confident in achieving a “moderately prosperous society.”Trade Review“It is highly recommended reading for social issues students interested in alternative anti-poverty strategies that have proven successful in the real world. … For those interested in the social issues of various nations and China in particular, The Evolution of China's Anti-Poverty Strategies provides a blueprint of entrepreneurial efforts that demonstrates how prosperity may be encouraged at all levels of society.” (California Bookwatch, Vol. 18 (4), April, 2023)Table of Contents- Chapter 1: Mogan Mountain’s Tang Hairong- Chapter 2: Liu Yunguang: An Entrepreneur With a Passion for Youth - Chapter 3: Jing Xuhua — A Loving Mother Triumphs at Home and in Business - Chapter 4: Ye Nan Brings a Bright Future to West China - Chapter 5: Yang Ying— From House Maid to Millionaire Philanthropist - Chapter 6: Gerile — Making Snacks to Put Her Daughter Through College - Chapter 7: Zhang Fang — Documenting Inner Mongolia’s Environmental Fight - Chapter 8: Zhao Xuan, A Retired Teacher From Xi’an - Chapter 9: Bu Wenjun: Inheriting Wei-family’s Brick-Carving Craftsmanship - Chapter 10: Zhang Jianlong — From Migrant Worker to Cattle King - Chapter 11: Xin Baotong— Helping the Helpless to Dream Again - Chapter 12: Wang Zenghao — Young Volunteer Working in Tibet - Chapter 13: Dawa Wangdui: A Tibetan Serf -turned Entrepreneur - Chapter 14: Xia Jiangping — Greening the Roof of the World! - Chapter 15: Wu Qiong (吴琼) — Educated to Serve Tibet - Chapter 16: How Self-made Man Xu Lidao Found He Needed Society - Chapter 17: Zhu Qingfu — Passionate About Photography - Chapter 18: Chen Qiaodi, The Yangshuo of Guangxi - Chapter 19: Lin Ruiqi, Huawei’s Senior Vice President Chapter 20: Lucy: The Youthful Heart of Huawei

Book SynopsisThis open access book explores the past and present of Quanzhou (Zayton) and the rich diversity and tolerance that kindled Quanzhou’s innovativeness and helped it prosper both commercially and culturally—values that are today being embraced by China’s global trade partners. Quanzhou (Zayton), Marco Polo’s port of departure and Columbus’ goal in China, was not only the start of the Maritime Silk Road and the Middle Age’s greatest port but also centuries ahead of its time in its tolerance and diversity. The fabled “City of Light” had 7 mosques for its 40,000 Muslims, some of whom served in government, as well as 3 Franciscan cathedrals funded in part by the emperor, Jewish synagogues, and centers for Nestorian Christians, Hindus, Taoists, Manicheans, Jains, etc. As Franciscan Bishop Andrew of Perugia wrote in 1322, “Tis a fact that in this vast empire, there are people of every nation under heaven, and every sect, and all and sundry are allowed to live freely according to their creed.” In 2021, UNESCO designated “Quanzhou, Emporium of the World,” as a world heritage site, and the city is now the hub of the Belt and Road Initiative, the 21st Century Silk Road, which was inspired by ancient Quanzhou.Table of ContentsQuanzhou at a Glance.- The Story of Zaytun.- Exploring Quanzhou Maritime Museum.- Exploring the Ancient Maritime Silk Road in Today’s Quanzhou.- Quanzhou: Home of Miraculous Chinese Puppets!.

ISEAS A View from the Highlands: Archaeology and

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThe highland of the Minangkabau community in Indonesia was the core area of the realm of Sumatra’s last Buddhist king, Adityavarman (c. 1347–75). An increasing socio-political integration, mentioned in his inscriptions, is marked by ceremonial architecture, changes of land use, and the establishment of an administration. Surveys and excavations have yielded new archaeological evidence that changes in settlement and socio-cultural patterns have occurred. New technology—metallurgy and an irrigation system—has also emerged. From the fourteenth century a territorial consolidation and increasing socio-economic complexity are evidenced, which initiated international trade and an incipient urbanisation process in this highland region. This book analyses the rise of the settlement system in the heartland of the Minangkabau region in the highlands of West Sumatra. It explores the regional settlement pattern arising from Adityavarman’s highland interregnum, and provides the first attempt to place the archaeological remains and the landscape of Tanah Datar, a fertile plain in the highlands of West Sumatra, in a cultural historic synthesis. The core of this research consisted of excavations at Bukit Gombak and Bukit Kincir. Bukit Gombak was a central place in Adityavarman’s kingdom, and provides evidence of the organisation and material development of this political entity. Surveys in the Tanah Datar plain provided evidence of other settlements that could be examined in relation to each other and to sites from earlier and later periods, and used to sketch out the settlement history of Tanah Datar from prehistoric times to the precolonial period. The book consists of detailed studies of metal, ceramics and glass finds by laboratory-based specialists as well as careful descriptions of stone, clay and other finds.

Springer Verlag, Singapore Friendship Across the Seas: The US Navy and the

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis Open Access book describes the history of the relationship between the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF), the heir to the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN), and the United States Navy (US Navy), with a focus on the individuals who helped build it. Former enemies who fought fiercely on the seas and in the air during the Pacific War, the two navies came to respect each other in action. Soon after the war, when the Cold War turned hot, they began to work together as allies, driven by their respective national interests. With the generous assistance of the US Navy, the JMSDF was established as its counterpart. Over the years, these two navies have gradually built strong ties. Individual officers and sailors on both sides overcame mixed feelings about their erstwhile foes to feel respect for and trust in each other. This was made possible by conducting countless joint exercises and operations at sea. US Navy leaders began to realize that this small maritime force, notwithstanding domestic political, constitutional, and legal limitations, does its job well, is reliable, and can be fully trusted. The JMSDF realized that, sharing common interests and values, there was no better navy in the Asia-Pacific region to ally with. Over seventy years of accumulated shared experiences have transformed this into perhaps the most successful navy-to-navy partnership in the world. The US-Japan maritime alliance today is anchored in this history. Numerous admirals, officers, and sailors of the two navies working together have greatly contributed to the stability and prosperity of the Asia-Pacific region for the past seven decades. This book is intended for readers interested in the history of US-Japan relations and for naval officers and sailors from the US and other countries. It is the author’s sincere desire that they read this book and appreciate the longstanding cooperation between the JMSDF and the US Navy.Table of ContentsChapter 1. James E. 1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book examines how the early twentieth-century Irish Renaissance (Irish Literary Revival) inspired the Chinese Renaissance (the May Fourth generation) of writers to make agentic choices and translingual exchanges. It sheds a new light on “May Fourth” and on the Irish Renaissance by establishing that the Irish Literary Revival (1900-1922) provided an alternative decolonizing model of resistance for the Chinese Renaissance to that provided by the western imperial center. The book also argues that Chinese May Fourth intellectuals translated Irish Revivalist plays by W. B. Yeats, Lady Gregory, Seán O’Casey and Synge and that Chinese peasants performed these plays throughout China during the 1920s and 1930s as a form of anti-imperial resistance. Yet this literary exchange was not simply going one way, since Yeats, Lady Gregory, Synge and O’Casey were also influenced by Chinese developments in literature and politics. Therefore this was a reciprocal encounter based on the circulation of Anti-colonial ideals and mutual transformation.Table of Contents1. Introduction.- 2. Book SynopsisThe protagonist of The Bottom Worker in East Asia: Composition and Transformation under Neoliberal Globalization is a bottom worker. Bottom workers are workers in the North and the South, who have suffered from the downward pressure of hierarchy under neoliberal globalization and have been re-stratified among themselves, from employed irregularly to self-employed and the working homeless. The existing division has become increasingly more fluid as the disparities in working conditions and wages are compressed downward. The book examines workers'' entrapment at the bottom, getting off the bottom, and intersecting each other by analyzing how they work, reside in, and build lifeworlds in cities and suburbs of four East Asian countries. In this way, it draws a dynamic picture of the contemporary working class.Contributors are: Tatsuto Asakawa, Ilju Kim, Jah-Hon Koo, Ashita Matsumiya, Yuko Matsusono, Shinji Sakamoto, Keishiro Tsutsumi, Keiko Yamaguchi, and Tsubasa Yuki.

Book SynopsisThe only extant treatise on statecraft from classical India, the Arthsastra is an invaluable resource for understanding ancient South Asian political thought; it also provides a comprehensive and unparalleled panoramic view of Indian society during the period between the Maurya (320-185 BCE) and Gupta (320-497 CE) empires. This volume offers modern English translations of key selections, organized thematically, from the Arthasastra. A general Introduction briefly traces the arc of ancient South Asian history, explains the classical Indian tradition of statecraft, and discusses the origins and importance of the Arthasastra. Thorough explanatory essays and notes set each excerpt in its intellectual, political, and cultural contexts.Trade Review"It's of great value to nonspecialists to have this classic work of political theory and political prudence available. This carefully edited and lucidly commented volume will be useful for both research and for courses on the comparative history of politics and civilizations." --Randolph C. Head, University of California, RiversideThe translations are the collaborative product of the two leading authorities today on the Arthasastra. . . . Their work is consistently, meticulously accurate throughout, yet written in the most straightforward and direct manner imaginable. The material prefatory to each translated section is, again, clear and accessible. . . . Complex matters are effectively distilled in plain language, and the key issues brought out. Superb on all counts. I have been awaiting such a volume for a long time. --Timothy Lubin, Washington and Lee UniversityMcClish and Olivelle's general Introduction to the Arthasastra is destined to become a classic in the field of South Asian studies; they have translated the text itself in an accessible style that students and general readers alike will comprehend and enjoy. --James Frey, University of Wisconsin, OshkoshTable of ContentsIntroduction; Authorship & Date: The Cāṇakya Legend, The Composer of the Arthaśāstra: the Historical Kauṭilya, Date & Location of the Arthaśāstra; Historical Context: The Indus Valley Period, The Vedic Period, The Classical Period; Arthaśāstra: Text & Tradition: The Concept of "artha", The Genre of Śāstra, The Tradition of Statecraft, Structure & Style of the Text; The World of the Arthaśāstra: Kingship & Royal Authority, Ruling a Kingdom, The King's Administration, The Layout of the Kingdom, Society, Religion & Ethics, Conquest & Success. 15 in stock

Book Synopsis"Frey's concise and readable history of the Indian Rebellion is an excellent introduction to one of the most important wars of the nineteenth century. The rebellion lasted more than a year and pitted broad sections of north Indian society against the British East India Company. British victory consolidated colonial rule that would only be dislodged by twentieth-century nationalist movements. Frey provides a crystal-clear account of the causes, principal events, and consequences of the rebellion. Equally importantly, he deftly discusses why the rebellion remains controversial. Well-chosen documents add texture to the analysis. This is the best short history of the rebellion in print." —Ian Barrow, Middlebury CollegeTrade Review"Frey skillfully condenses and explains the complexities of the Indian sepoy mutiny of 1857 and the campaign to suppress it. This is a heroic achievement. The context provided is extremely helpful and the concluding analysis provides a bold attempt at synthesis. The documents are well selected, being quite different from previous collections. This book is highly detailed and informative, well written, and engaging to read. For undergraduates, postgraduates, and researchers it will be a boon having so much information within a single volume. It will be especially useful in courses addressing South Asian, British, World, or Imperial history." —Crispin Bates, University of Edinburgh

  • Pisces Moon: The Dark Arts of Empire

Trine Day Pisces Moon: The Dark Arts of Empire

Book SynopsisPisces Moon: The Dark Arts of Empire is a non-fiction book about what writer William Burroughs called, “ the backlash and bad karma of empire.” Set against the author’ s month-long trip to London, Vietnam and Thailand in early 1991, it tells how the American empire was created by rapacious businessmen backed by a murderous military establishment, media moguls who designed a relentless psychological warfare campaign that glorifies warriors who are programmed to kill on command, and clerics who contrived a religious justification for imperialism, the subordination of women, and the establishment of chattel slavery. Pisces Moon shows how these mythmakers, led by CIA drug traffickers after World War Two, destroyed much of Southeast Asia. It also tells how the myth of American greatest has come home to roost and is now manifest as the vainglorious, militant Christian nationalist movement that wishes to establish a right-wing dictatorship. Pisces Moon argues that the survival of American democracy, and the world, depends upon people being able to distinguish between material evidence and substantiated facts on the one hand, and conspiracy theories, religious beliefs, and supremacist myths

Verso Books The Panthay Rebellion: Islam, Ethnicity and the

Book SynopsisThe Panthay Rebellion of 1856-1873 held the armies of the Qing dynasty at bay for nearly two decades. This account by David Atwill offers a remarkable panorama of the cosmopolitan frontier society from which the rebellion sprang. The rebel leader, Du Wenxiu, took the name of Sultan Suleiman, established a Muslim court at the ancient city of Dali and sought to unite the population against Manchu rule, with considerable success at a time when the Qing faced threats in all parts of the empire. Atwill offers the first detailed account of Du's seventeen-year rule and upturns a historiography that filters the Panthay Rebellion through the political and military lenses of the Chinese centre. The insurrection was not rooted solely in Hui hatred of the Han Chinese, he argues, nor was it primarily Islamic in orientation. Atwill draws out the multitudinous complexities of Yunnan Province, China's most ethnically diverse region and a crossroads for Tibetan, Chinese and Southeast Asian culture. The Panthay Rebellion was the last of a series of mid-century Chinese revolts to be suppressed. Its downfall marked the beginning of a renewed offensive by the imperial government to control its border regions and influence the cultures of those who lived there.Trade ReviewValuable reading for persons interested in the economic and political history of minorities in China . and in particular the history of Muslims in China' -- Eva Goldschmidt * H-Net *A thought-provoking, sophisticated study * Journal of Asian Studies *Compelling, I would strongly recommend it -- Beth E. Book SynopsisIn eighteenth-century China, a remarkable intellectual transformation took place, centered on the ascendance of philology. In China’s Philological Turn, Ori Sela foregrounds the polymath Qian Daxin to reconstruct the history of eighteenth-century Chinese learning and its long-lasting consequences.Trade ReviewOri Sela clearly and persuasively argues for the importance of the philological turn in the late eighteenth century, explaining fully the larger moral and intellectual justification for the turn and its significance for the whole course of Chinese intellectual history. This book also treats an extremely important figure in the history of Chinese scholarship, Qian Daxin. Sela makes clear both the remarkable range and depth of Qian’s philological scholarship and the crucial moral and ethical importance that Qian saw in what has often been dismissed as dry pedantry. -- Cynthia Brokaw, Brown UniversityIn China’s Philological Turn, Sela explicates the superlative classical scholarship championed by the literatus Qian Daxin (1728–1804). Among the leading classicists in Qing China, Qian and his students and colleagues were forgotten after the Opium War. Overlapping the prisms of society, ideas, and science, Sela reexamines China’s eighteenth-century philological revolution and convincingly shows that modern historians have generally overlooked the ‘philological turn’ from the eighteenth to the nineteenth century. -- Benjamin A. Elman, Princeton UniversityIn this rich and lucidly argued account of the mid-Qing revolution in Chinese intellectual thought and identity, presented on its own terms and within the contexts of social history and the history of science, Ori Sela definitively lays to rest outdated understandings of China's relation to the modern world. It is a timely reminder of the contemporary resonance of historical understanding. -- Joanna Waley-Cohen, Julius Silver Professor of History, New York University and Provost, NYU ShanghaiA well-researched work and offers a new standard for the comprehensive study of high-Qing polymaths. For yearsto come, it will be an important reference for conceiving the relationship between Han learning and Song learning, philology and science, social network and scholarly pathway. * East Asian Science, Technology, and Medicine *Table of ContentsPreface and AcknowledgmentsIntroduction: The Way and Its CrossroadsPart I. Book SynopsisIn 2019, the United States' trade war with China expanded to blacklist the Chinese tech titan Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd. The resulting attention showed the information and communications technology (ICT) firm entwined with China's political-economic transformation. But the question remained: why does Huawei matter? Yun Wen uses the Huawei story as a microcosm to understand China's evolving digital economy and the global rise of the nation's corporate power. Rejecting the idea of the transnational corporation as a static institution, she explains Huawei's formation and restructuring as a historical process replete with contradictions and complex consequences. She places Huawei within the international political economic framework to capture the dynamics of power structure and social relations underlying corporate China's globalization. As she explores the contradictions of Huawei's development, she also shows the ICT firm's complicated interactions with other political-economic forcesTrade Review"Recommended." --Choice "With The Huawei Model, Yun Wen has written a superb book on the complex relationship between Huawei and China as well as the implications of their simultaneous rises, albeit in different roles, with regard to the information and communications technology (ICT) industry and geopolitics." --Chinese Journal of Communication "Yun Wen's book The Huawei Model provides a detailed and useful account of the evolution and global expansion of Huawei Technologies." --China QuarterlyTable of ContentsList of Illustrations Abbreviations Acknowledgments Introduction {Introductions and conclusions don’t typically have chapter numbers} Chapter 1.
