Book SynopsisThis introductory textbook teaches the simple development of geospatial applications based on the principles and software tools of geospatial data science. It introduces a new generation of geospatial technologies that have emerged from the development of the Semantic Web and the linked data paradigm, and shows how data scientists can use them to build environmental applications easily. Geospatial data science is the science of collecting, organizing, analyzing, and visualizing geospatial data. Since around 2010, there has been extensive work in the area of geospatial data science using semantic technologies and linked data, from researchers in the areas of the Semantic Web, Geospatial Databases and Geoinformatics. The main results of this research have been the publication of the OGC standard GeoSPARQL and the implementation of a number of linked data tools supporting this standard. Up to now, there has been no textbook that enables someone to teach this material to undergraduate or graduate students. The material of the book is developed in a tutorial style and it is appropriate for an introductory course on the subject. This can be an advanced undergraduate course or a graduate course offered by Computer Science or GIS faculty. It is a hands-on approach and every chapter contains exercises that help students master the material. The book is accompanied by a Web site where solutions to some of the exercises are given together with supplementary material such as datasets and code. Most of the material in the book has been tried in the "Knowledge Technologies" course taught by the first author in the Department of Informatics and Telecommunications of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens since 2012.

Book SynopsisAlan Turing, pioneer of computing and WWII codebreaker, is one of the most important and influential thinkers of the twentieth century. In this volume for the first time his key writings are made available to a broad, non-specialist readership. They make fascinating reading both in their own right and for their historic significance: contemporary computational theory, cognitive science, artificial intelligence, and artificial life all spring from this ground-breaking work, which is also rich in philosophical and logical insight. An introduction by leading Turing expert Jack Copeland provides the background and guides the reader through the selection. About Alan TuringAlan Turing FRS OBE, (1912-1954) studied mathematics at King''s College, Cambridge. He was elected a Fellow of King''s in March 1935, at the age of only 22. In the same year he invented the abstract computing machines - now known simply as Turing machines - on which all subsequent stored-program digital computers are modelTrade ReviewThe editor not only presents the Turing seminal papers and ingenious contributions to fields he was far ahead his time, he also gives easy access for non-specialists by his comprehensive introductions and comments. * Volker Peckhaus, Zentralblatt MATH 1076 *Table of ContentsAlan Turing 1912-1954 ; Computable Numbers: A Guide ; 1. Book SynopsisTechniques for reasoning about actions an change in the physical world is one of the classical research topics in artificial intelligence. It is motivated by the needs of autonomous robots which must be able to anticipate their immediate future, to plan their future actions, and to figure out what went wrong in case of problems. It is also motivated by the needs of common-sense reasoning for example in the understanding of natural language texts, where processes and change over time is an ever-present phenomenon. The same set of problems arises in several other areas of computing such as in conceptual modelling for data bases, and in the rapidly growing area of intelligent control. The present research monograph presents and uses a novel methodology for reasoning about actions and change. Traditional research contributions have proposed new logic variants which were only supported by episodical examples. Book SynopsisThe field of artificial intelligence (AI) has grown dramatically in recent decades from niche expert systems to the current myriad of deep machine learning applications that include personal assistants, natural-language interfaces, and medical, financial, and traffic management systems. This boom in AI engineering masks the fact that all current AI systems are based on two fundamental ideas: mathematics (logic and statistics, from the 19th century), and a grossly simplified understanding of biology (mainly neurons, as understood in 1943). This book explores other fundamental ideas that have the potential to make AI more anthropomorphic. Most books on AI are technical and do not consider the humanities. Most books in the humanities treat technology in a similar manner. AI and Human Thought and Emotion, however is about AI, how academics, researchers, scientists, and practitioners came to think about AI the way they do, and how they can think about it afresh with a humanTable of Contents0. Book SynopsisThe Routledge Social Science Handbook of AI is a landmark volume providing students and teachers with a comprehensive and accessible guide to the major topics and trends of research in the social sciences of artificial intelligence (AI), as well as surveying how the digital revolution from supercomputers and social media to advanced automation and robotics is transforming society, culture, politics and economy. The Handbook provides representative coverage of the full range of social science engagements with the AI revolution, from employment and jobs to education and new digital skills to automated technologies of military warfare and the future of ethics. The reference work is introduced by editor Anthony Elliott, who addresses the question of relationship of  social sciences to artificial intelligence, and who surveys various convergences and divergences between contemporary social theory and the digital revolution. The Handbook is excepTrade Review"As expected from a handbook with the goal of summarizing current debates, questions are posed and controversies noted more often than answers are offered in this collection of 21 essays. However, surveying so many different angles on artificial intelligence (AI) allows some insight-inducing themes to emerge. AI and machine learning (ML) are everywhere, from a cellphone's virtual assistant to tech support chatbots, including in the machines that decipher handwritten addresses for the US Postal Service. Many AI systems are assisted by small armies of humans who fill in when the software fails. Such technology remains invisible to most people yet shapes their understandings of the world and themselves. People think and categorize, work, play, and govern themselves differently because of AI—they adopt algorithmic thinking, see new value in inferential reasoning because of big data, and treat anthropomorphic robots like persons. Sometimes these changes are obvious or can be articulated, but some seem to influence human experience and expectations of the world itself, as in the debatable but widespread idea that minds are computers, and computers are (so far fairly limited) minds. Many will use this book, though specialists are likely to be most interested. Summing Up: Highly recommended. Lower- and upper-division undergraduates. Graduate students and faculty. • Taylor & Francis Predictive Policing and Artificial Intelligence Routledge Frontiers of Criminal Justice

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThis edited text draws together the insights of numerous worldwide eminent academics to evaluate the condition of predictive policing and artificial intelligence (AI) as interlocked policy areas. Predictive and AI technologies are growing in prominence and at an unprecedented rate. Powerful digital crime mapping tools are being used to identify crime hotspots in real-time, as pattern-matching and search algorithms are sorting through huge police databases populated by growing volumes of data in an eff ort to identify people liable to experience (or commit) crime, places likely to host it, and variables associated with its solvability. Facial and vehicle recognition cameras are locating criminals as they move, while police services develop strategies informed by machine learning and other kinds of predictive analytics. Many of these innovations are features of modern policing in the UK, the US and Australia, among other jurisdictions.AI promises to reduce unnecessary labour, speed up various forms of police work, encourage police forces to more efficiently apportion their resources, and enable police officers to prevent crime and protect people from a variety of future harms. However, the promises of predictive and AI technologies and innovations do not always match reality. They often have significant weaknesses, come at a considerable cost and require challenging trade- off s to be made. Focusing on the UK, the US and Australia, this book explores themes of choice architecture, decision- making, human rights, accountability and the rule of law, as well as future uses of AI and predictive technologies in various policing contexts. The text contributes to ongoing debates on the benefits and biases of predictive algorithms, big data sets, machine learning systems, and broader policing strategies and challenges.Written in a clear and direct style, this book will appeal to students and scholars of policing, criminology, crime science, sociology, computer science, cognitive psychology and all those interested in the emergence of AI as a feature of contemporary policing.
