Notting Hill Editions Fashion: A Manifesto
Book SynopsisOn the one hand clothes can supposedly help you out with embodied life by concealing the bits you feel ashamed of and accentuating the bits you're proud of. However, fashion isn't really about clothes in any practical sense, but rather the endless replacement of clothes by other clothes, and especially the vilification of certain styles and the extreme elevation of others. Like gambling, fashion is a system that keeps us captivated by treating us badly, trapping us in a cycle of promises and dashed hopes by suggesting that new clothes will help us to like ourselves more. And while it's easy to dismiss fashion as elitist and wasteful, isn't it also fascinating, exciting and perhaps sometimes even radical - not to mention surprisingly egalitarian? Rather than insisting we give up on the pleasures that clothes have to offer, this brilliant new book by psychoanalyst and writer Anouchka Grose puts forward a post-fashion logic that rejects the parade of manufactured novelties in favour of more idiosyncratic forms of sartorial imitation. Taking us on a journey from the court of Louis XIV to TikTok's avant apocalypse, Fashion: A Manifesto scrutinises fashion from a number of angles: historically, psychologically, politically, environmentally, even linguistically, to open up questions about the ways in which it works both for and against us and looks forward to a future where our clothes treat us - not to mention the planet - a great deal more kindly.Trade Review“Grose’s wry tone makes her manifesto a joy, but this small book (enticingly produced, with pink cloth covers) has a serious intent. In light of fashion’s egregious role in the climate emergency, Grose wants to change our approach—to revise it—so that we may retain our abiding joy in clothes without further destroying the planet.” —Claire Messud, Harper’s Magazine

Unicorn Publishing Group Beyond East and West: Memoirs, Portraits and
Book SynopsisBernard Leach (1887-1979) was as renowned in Japan and the East as in Europe and America, both as an artist-craftsman and as a thinker. His interpretation of the traditions of the Orient in the making of pots - and in evolving a philosophy of life - was a lodestar for many potters in the West. Beyond East and West, first published in 1978, is more than an autobiography. Full of sharply- etched and amusing recollections, it contains much of Leach’s deeper thought and a great deal too about the practical application of his ideas. Its recurrent theme is the meeting of East and West at all levels - artistic, cultural, social, political.

Unicorn Publishing Group London the Metamorphosis
Book SynopsisAs London evolves into a Babylonian-style city of lofty towers, the artist Anna Keen has been inspired to paint this London Metamorphosis. While each new edifice heads to the heavens, the exposed entrails of these vast construction sites strangely resemble ruins. Her large canvases are enriched with details stemming from patient observation and on-the-spot sketches, and from voyages around the city made by helicopter, boat, road and on foot. Like the eighteenth-century artist J.M Gandy, who simultaneously painted London in ruins and in construction, Anna Keen takes us just beneath the surface of the metropolis, to where the emotional landscape lurks and to where the soul of London is heading. London-based art historian Edward Lucie-Smith has followed Anna Keen's painting since 1995 in Rome.

Omnibus Press King's Road: The Rise and Fall of the Hippest
Book SynopsisThe King's Road in Chelsea was at the epicentre of not one, but two worldwide cultural shifts. In the mid-sixties, it became a focal point and shop window for the new 'swinging' London, encompassing music, theatre, the visual arts, fashion and much more. It remained at the forefront of developing trends throughout the following decade until it became the breeding-ground for UK punk rock, helping inspire youthful rebellion the world over. In short, it was the place to be. In the time between the formation of the Rolling Stones and the demise of the Sex Pistols, the King's Road had the attention of the world. Just how this came to be is a classic rise-and-fall story of satisfaction and sedition, featuring some of the most famous people of the late twentieth century and many of the pivotal moments of the fifties, sixties and seventies. This revised and expanded edition of King's Road covers the cultural history of the King's Road, tracking many key figures who lived or spent time there, from Henry VIII to David Bowie, Margaret Thatcher to Vivienne Westwood, Karl Marx to The Beatles, and Mozart to Mary Quant.Trade Review'In Max Décharné's thoroughly researched and entertaining book, the ghosts of London’s past collide almost on every page.' Louder Than War; 'Razor-sharp history of London's coolest rock route. A towering feat... the threads linking the cultural hotspots and characters are so skilfully woven. Essential for swingers and squares alike.' 8* Classic Rock; 'As a trawl through the glitz and glamour of the King's Road, this is heard to beat. Décharné's research, which takes in everything from political weeklies to underground pop magazines, is impressive and unimpeachable, and he whisks the reader along in brisk and witty prose.' --Sunday Times; '[A] highly enjoyable book... Max Décharné uses the long spine of the road, and the ribs of the adjoining streets, as a skeleton which he fleshes out with the artistic, musical and sartorial developments flourishing in these few squares of the London A-Z.' --Independent; 'Exhilarating, informative, chatty and hip... Décharné 's frantic, fact-packed book superbly captures all the buzz and lunatic frivolity of a street that has consistently been at the cutting edge of all that is new in theatre, fashion and film'. --Daily Mail

Scribe Publications TwentyTwo Impressions
Book SynopsisA poetic new essay collection in which the symbols of the tarot brush up against life in a changing world. The Tarot de Marseille is a 16th-century set of playing cards, the deck on which the occult use of tarot was originally based. When Jessica Friedmann bought her first pack, the unfamiliar images sparked a deep immersion in the art, symbols, myths, and misrepresentations of Renaissance-era tarot. Over the years that followed, and as tarot became a part of her daily rhythm, Friedmann's life was touched by floods and by drought, by devastating fires and a pandemic, creating an environment in which the only constant was change. Twenty-Two Impressions: notes from the Major Arcana uses the Tarot de Marseille as a touchstone, blending historical research, art history, and critical insights with personal reflections. In these essays, Friedmann demonstrates how the cards of the Major Arcana can be used as a lens through which to examine the unexpectedness and subtle beauty of 21st-

Watkins Media Limited Sick Houses
Book SynopsisExplores the architecture of haunted houses, uncanny domestic spaces, and how the horror genre subverts and corrupts the sanctity of home. The history of horror begins with a house. From Otranto to Amityville, the haunted house story endures because it perverts what is equally the most universal and the most personal of realms: the home. Our home is an extension of our self, a manifestation of our identity, and a repository of our memories. It is a micro-universe of our own creation that we control. It is also where we are the most vulnerable because we are supposed to be the most safe. Whether it is a decrepit Victorian mansion, a modernist luxury high-rise, a little cottage in the woods, or a starter house in the suburbs, Sick Houses explores how the horror genre in film, television, and literature uses architecture and the ideology of the home against us. It looks at the mythology of the American Dream and how the lure of homeownership becomes a trap. It celebrates the witch house, the power of the crone, and the fear of aging women who live alone. It explores how concrete utopias became ready-made mise en scene for urban terror. From the betrayal of sentient shape-shifting houses to shadow-self dollhouse doppelgangers, Sick Houses examines how the horror genre subverts and corrupts that which is the most sacrosanct.

Oscar Riera Ojeda Publishers Limited Strata: a desert dwelling
Book SynopsisSTRATA celebrates modernist design in multiple ways. Its vast use of glass blurs the inside with the outside. Its deep overhanging eaves intersecting with each other at various angles recalls the best work of Wright. Its expansive glass calls to mind Neutra’s work and his insistence on architectural transparency. The house’s imaginative interiors bespeak comfort and solace needed for days spent in the unforgiving Arizona sun. Its construction required extensive work on the site before the first slab was poured, a testament to the talent of the construction team. Whenever and wherever possible, native stone and wood were used to give the house a sense of authenticity. The sliding glass doors located at multiple points allow the owners to have delightful dinner parties just as the sun is setting and the dry air is cooling – neither indoors nor outdoors, but a vivid combination of the two.

Hatje Cantz Skin in the Game: Conversations on Risk and
Book SynopsisNo Going Back Skin in the Game follows on from the acclaimed fieldwork diary, The Metabolic Museum. In this new book written in a conversational style, Clémentine Deliss expands on how artists today understand the creativity to be found in historical research collections. Questions are raised on how to work with contentious collections, the law from the perspective of Indigenous artists, and the concept of the “prototype” that defines an artist’s career. Deliss speaks with leading women artists—Ruth Buchanan, Otobong Nkanga, Collier Schorr, Rosemarie Trockel, Joëlle Tuerlincx, and Andrea Zittel—, about their moment of “skin in the game,” when they knew there was no going back, and that art practice would become their Hades and paradise in one. What was the prototype that defined their practice and that like a revenant returns over the course of an artist’s lifetime?

Hirmer Verlag Wall of Death: Motodrom: The Oldest Travelling
Book SynopsisRiding on the edge. The daredevil life of the Wall of Death drivers in the motordrome. Donald Ganslmeier and his colleagues on the Wall of Death of the motordrome are amongst the last of their kind. Their art is threatened with extinction. The photographer Florian Holzherr has created a powerful memorial to the action-packed life around the boards that signify the world. His black-and-white photos of the daredevil motorcyclists and the accompanying texts show the myth of the Wall of Death in a fascinating new way. For several years the Munich photographer Florian Holzherr accompanied the steep-wall motorcyclists around Donald Ganslmeier with his analogue camera while setting up the Wall of Death and riding and then dismantling it again, and then in their lives on the road. The result is images which show the story of an artistry that is threatened with extinction. In impressive, unfiltered black-and-white pictorial language accompanied by powerful texts, the volume enables the reader to learn of the fascination and passion, and also of the risk, as it provides an insight into the lives of the artists beyond the show.

Taschen GmbH The Little Book of Tom. Cops & Robbers
Book SynopsisTom’s taste for police officers and felons—and for sexual tension between the two—developed late in his career. “I’ve never been to prison,” he told a class at the California Institute of the Arts in 1985, “but I hear it’s a closed world where there are different roles and people behave different from when they walk free. It fascinates me. It is another subject I come back to again and again.” By which he meant fantasized about again and again, since only those subjects that aroused him sexually made it into his art. The uniforms of the California Highway Patrol motorcyclists were his favorite: tan and tight, with high boots and soft black leather gauntlet gloves. He created his own uniform variants as well, a cross between military and civilian police gear, and invented suitably butch criminals for his cops to apprehend, though once apprehended the power struggle could go either way. Tom was determined to show top and bottom as equally masculine roles, and his cops were as likely to end up happily speared by criminal cock as delivering corrective coitus. Though criticized by some for what appeared to be a glorification of power, Tom was always quick to remind that the world he created was a fantasy world, where anything was possible, and everything was consensual—even in prison. The Little Book of Tom: Cops & Robbers explores Tom’s fascination with criminal justice through a mixture of multi-panel comics and single-panel drawings and paintings, all in a compact and affordable 192 pages. Historic film stills and posters, personal photos of Tom, sketches, and Tom’s own reference photos make this far more than another Tom’s Comics re-tread.
