  • Seeking Sanctuary: Private Residences for True

Beta-Plus Seeking Sanctuary: Private Residences for True

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisAccording to New York based interior designer, life coach and meditation teacher Joshua Smith, “When your home is your sanctuary, there’s a big exhale when you walk through that front door. It nourishes your spirit, inspires your mind, and enhances your connection to yourself, your loved ones and the divine, however you might define that” (in Homes & Gardens, January 2023). For Shelby Deering, designer of the tranquil spaces of The Well (with locations in New York City, Washington, Miami, Costa Rica and Mexico), "Over the last few years, our homes have become more important than ever. Throughout the pandemic, we saw them function as offices, gyms, schools, restaurants — and, of course, our own little corners of the world where we were able to find relief from daily pressures and anxiety. Because of this shift, it’s no wonder that people have made efforts to refresh their living quarters to focus more on health, wellness and self-care. After all, when the environment around you feels like a calming refuge, those peaceful vibes can directly impact how you feel.” The 15 private residences presented in this beautiful book can all be called “sanctuaries” because they all seek to support and protect the well-being of their owners, families and guests. Everyone needs a happy place, a space to relax, unwind, and let the worries of everyday life melt away. Some may dream of white-sand beaches, while others may prefer cozy mountain chalets, or a meditative, decluttered wabi sabi interior in a cosmopolitan setting. Whether in Brazil, Sweden, Mexico, Crete, St. Barts, Spain or in Belgium - all over the world, people are searching for the ultimate comfort, safety and happiness in their own cocoon, their own protective environment.

  • More Rick Owens

Rizzoli International Publications More Rick Owens

    5 in stock

Book SynopsisRick Owens remains one of the most daring and influential fashion designers working today. This new book of photographs describes an exceptionally fertile and transformational period in his career, one that saw him experiment with new shapes, the application of new materials, and an unprecedented use of color.Lavishly documenting men’s and women’s collections and featuring Owens’s continuing collaboration with the photographer Danielle Levitt, this book is an unabashed love letter to one of the most devoted followings in contemporary fashion.Picking up where Rizzoli’s previous monograph on Owens’s work left off, looks from his critically lauded homage to the rock-and-roll designer Larry Legaspi set a frenzied visual pace that never lets up—right through the pandemic, when Owens memorably staged shows on the Lido di Venezia. Here, the continued evolution of nearly three decades of Owens’s “grunge-meets-glTrade Review"Documenting Rick Owen’s longtime collaboration with photographer Danielle Levitt, this latest book (which picks up where 2011’ Rick Owens left off) captures the rock-and-roll-meets-glam approach that the designer has been known for throughout his 30-year career." —THE ZOE REPORT "An oeuvre as revolutionary as Rick Owens’s could never be contained in just one book. That’s why we need More Rick Owens, the follow-up to the designer’s eponymous 2019 monograph. Through the precise lens of Danielle Levitt, Owens’s daring recent looks come into sharp focus. Alien headpieces and off-kilter silhouettes are tamed through impeccable tailoring and visionary detail. The typical goth-glam aesthetic of the anti-fashion designer is reinvigorated with splashes of color, while unexpected materials—think fish hides and goat hair—propel his work squarely into the realm of the avant-garde. Nearly three decades into his career, Owens continues to leave us begging for more." —V MAGAZINE"In a continuation of his first volume of photographs, the designer Rick Owens teams up with the photographer Danielle Levitt to delight in provocation. Prepare for louche poses and leather, daring silhouettes and spikes." —NY TIMES"A new Rizzoli tome — “More Rick Owens,” Owens’s second with the publisher — captured by his longtime collaborator, photographer Danielle Levitt, features some of his most audacious collections on those subjects, made between 2019 and 2023. It includes what Owens calls “our covid quartet”: four shows that Owens produced during the height of the pandemic." —THE WASHINGTON POST"More so than many comparable titles on other designers, the physical production of the volume beautifully reflects the essence of the Owens brand: the cover is raw cardboard with unfinished edges; the title is understated and small but gorgeously embossed, blending rich black ink with luminescent metallic in a clean, sans-serif, ultra-modern typeface. This blend of restrained, cool modernity with rugged utilitarianism is an overarching theme in Owens’s work, and echoing it in the actual materiality of the book was a wise move by Rizzoli. It makes it the too-cool volume to add to your coffee table stack, the book that will make you feel very Berlin or—dare we say—Scandi (an interesting complement given that Owens is, himself, from California)." —NY JOURNAL OF BOOKS

Book SynopsisThe iconic fashion designer offers unprecedented access into her career and personal history with this once-in-a-lifetime publishing event. The complete, official retrospective, designed by Irma Boom-one of the world's leading book designers-in close collaboration with Jil Sander herself, is packed with special features, that will make it a highly coveted collectors' item. For decades the name Jil Sander has evoked the philosophy of less is more-a minimalist aesthetic using highest quality materials and employing exquisite craftsmanship to the effect of poetic purity. Designed and produced as impeccably as her clothing, this beautiful book offers unprecedented access into Sander's remarkable history as a designer, and international businesswoman. Rich in archival material, and glimpses into the life of its famously publicity-shy subject, this book tells how Sander started in the 1960s and quickly established herself as a discriminating designer unfazed by trends. When the world finally caught up to her brand, in the late 80s and 90s, the Sander name became one of the most prestigious in all of fashion. Adhering to her core principles was the key to success with her own label. The book recapitulates her foray into the world of cosmetics and her later partnership with Uniqlo, where she created the special line +J. A further focus is given to her cooperation with leading architects on the architecture and interior design of her multinational flagship stores. Every aspect of Sander's career is interwoven in this fascinating story. The result is an elegant manifestation of the Jil Sander name-a story of integrity and grit, sumptuously packaged and timeless.

Book SynopsisAbbeville's classic edition ofThe Birds of Americais back in stock in a striking new package. The Baby Elephant Folio presents all 435 of John James Audubon's brilliant hand-coloured engravings in exquisite reproductions derived from the original plates of the rare Double Elephant Folio. Organised and annotated by Roger Tory Peterson and Virginia Marie Peterson, this volume is as informative as it is beautiful. Its fascinating introduction places Audubon in the context of the history of American ornithological art and also reproduces a wide sampling of the work of his notable predecessors and disciples, including Roger Tory Peterson's own rightfully famous paintings. While his depictions of consumer products and celebrities led him to become household famous, there is a red thread throughout his career, starting even in the late forties until his untimely death in 1987. In the eighties Warhol was continuously searching to visualize an ideal of beauty, male beauty, finding form and creating lasting images of what he desired. He visualized and therefore eternalized this continuous pursuit of ideal beauty. From the early line and blotted line drawings to his screen tests and moving image experiments in the sixties, the torso paintings in the seventies through his collaborations with Jean-Michel Basquiat, there is a continuous search to express an ideal of male beauty. Book Synopsis'Fascinating' Sunday Times'Deeply sourced and rich with anecdotes' The Times'Like a nonfiction version of The Devil Wears Prada' Elizabeth Day'Odell's extensive reporting dredges up a wealth of delightful details' New York TimesThis definitive biography of Anna Wintour chronicles the steep climb of an ambitious young woman who would, with singular and legendary focus, become the most powerful woman in media. As a child, Anna Wintour was a tomboy with no apparent interest in clothing but, seduced by the miniskirts and bob haircuts of swinging 1960s London, she grew into a fashion-obsessed teenager. Her father, the influential editor of the Evening Standard, loomed large in her life, and once he decided she should become editor in chief of Vogue, she never looked back.Impatient to start her career, she left high school and got a job at a fashionable boutique in London - an experience that would be the first of many defeats. Undeterred, she found work in the competitive world of magazines, eventually moving to New York. Before long, Anna's journey to Vogue became a battle to ascend, no matter who or what stood in her way. Once she was crowned editor in chief - in one of the stormiest transitions in fashion magazine history - she continued the fight to retain her enviable position, ultimately rising to dominate all of Condé Nast.Based on extensive interviews with Anna Wintour's closest friends and collaborators, including some of the biggest names in fashion, journalist Amy Odell has crafted the most revealing portrait of Wintour ever published. Weaving Anna's personal story into a larger narrative about the hierarchical dynamics of the fashion industry and the complex world of Condé Nast, Anna charts the relentless ambition of the woman who would become an icon.Trade ReviewLike a nonfiction version of The Devil Wears Prada -- Elizabeth DayAn impressively detailed portrait that reveals much about Wintour's management style and early career * Financial Times, Books of the Year *Fascinating * Sunday Times *Odell's book is deeply sourced and rich with anecdotes. Given that she's famously private and notoriously aloof, the participation of intimates in the book's reporting indicates a green light from Wintour herself. But Odell is unsparing, detailing Wintour's ambitious rise and ruthless power grabs, dotting the narrative with a healthy amount of gossip and color. * Bloomberg Businessweek *A dissection of one of fashion's most controversial figures and a window into the glossy pages of Vogue, Amy Odell's definitive Anna Wintour bio balances criticism with understanding and stories of true sadism: Imagine telling Oprah to lose 20 pounds for a cover * Rolling Stone *A fascinating portrait of the secretive queen of fashion. Book SynopsisThe photographs of these journeys form one of the most extensive records of any region taken in the 19th century. The range, depth and aesthetic quality of John Thomson’s photographic vision mark him out as one of the most important travel photographers. Thomson arrived in Siam in 1865 and with the help of the British Consul in Bangkok, he was able to gain an audience with King Mongkut who granted him permission to take some formal portraits of the King, his royal family and chief ministers, as well as recording important ceremonies and travelling to Ayutthaya, Petchaburi and the surrounding countryside. Staying in Bangkok for several months he photographed many aspects of the city, river scenes, its surrounding countryside and people, before journeying to Cambodia and the amazing Angkor Wat ruins. After an arduous and dangerous journey, Thomson became the first photographer to document Angkor Wat before returning to London. Between 1868-1872 Thomson turned his attention to China, making extensive trips to Guangdon, Fujian, Beijing and China’s north-east travelling down the Yangtze river and covering nearly 5,000 miles. In China, Thomson’s photographic skills reached their zenith and his portraits of women are particularly remarkable. His collection of over 600 glass negatives form a unique archive of images, which are today housed in the Wellcome Library, London.

Book SynopsisThis volume compiles the buildings and projects produced by Atelier Scheidegger Keller since 2009. The collection is not a traditional architectural monograph, but is instead comparable to the logbook of a ship’s voyage: it records all the particulars and actions on the journey. Models, diagrams, codes, texts, maps, plans, sketches, mock-ups, building and detail plans, engineering and workshop drawings, building-site images and photo series all document the process, as well as the spatial, typological and constructive research involved. The result is direct insight into the multifaceted working methods and conceptual world of Atelier Scheidegger Keller. The four constructed buildings include the highly-acclaimed House with two Columns in Wilen (2014) and the Rosengarten student accommodation in Zurich-Wipkingen (2020), with its raw materialisation and double-storey halls and loggias. Text contributions by: Christian Scheidegger, Jürg Keller With articles from various sources by: Tibor Joanelly, Christian Kerez, Mario Monotti, Christoph Ramisch, Christoph Wieser, Raphael Zuber et al. Text in English and German.

teNeues Publishing UK Ltd The 1990s Fashion Book

    5 in stock

Book SynopsisThe 1990s Fashion Book is a tribute to the unique fashion of that time. Flashy, colourful, casual and sexy, these were the attributes that applied back then. Top models, hip-hoppers or pop groups like Take That and the Spice Girls exemplified a fashion style that triggered a boom all over the world. It is fair to say that, in retrospect, hardly any other decade has had such a formative effect on modern times as the 1990s. It is considered a decade of revolution, in which almost everything that had existed before changed at breakneck speed. This is when ground-breaking technologies such as the internet or nationwide mobile telephony came into being, without which our lives today would be unimaginable. Modern pop culture and current fashion design originate to a large extent from the cradle of the '90s. Sub-trends of the time such as grunge, hip-hop, minimalism, casual chic and deconstructivism are, in retrospect, what continues to have an impact today. Text in English and German.
