Rockpool Publishing Hieronymus Bosch Tarot
Book SynopsisThere are few artists whose work has sustained its power to shock, amaze, and delight audiences for over 500 years, but anyone who views 'The Garden of Earthly Delights' will surely experience all three of those emotions at once. Although Hieronymus Bosch has a reputation as a brilliant madman, in his time, he was regarded as a master of art. His unique dreamlike style led him to be crowned the first surrealist, in a period where the artistic consensus was one of realism. Renowned occultist and bestselling author, Travis McHenry, has painstakingly isolated scenes and characters from Bosch's most famous paintings to create singular images that convey mystical meaning, while capturing the philosophical spirit of traditional Tarot cards. The result is a deck that is beautiful, inspirational, and unlike anything you've ever seen before. Sometimes humorous, sometimes haunting, but always captivating, The Hieronymus Bosch Tarot sets a new benchmark for Tarot card decks currently available.

Tuttle Publishing Japan Style: Architecture + Interiors + Design
Book SynopsisJapanese homes speak to the soul and provide a contemplative environment from which to experience the world.Japan Style offers rare glimpses into twenty exquisite traditional homes in Japan. The lavish photographs in this volume demonstrate how Japanese design achieves a timeless tranquility using a few very simple, natural elements.Wood is the preferred building material since it is considered a "living" material; the country's Shinto and Zen Buddhist roots have inculcated a deep respect for nature. The houses in this book are a wonderful reminder that there are alternatives to "big is beautiful"—and that neither timelessness nor modernity has to be about using cold steel, glass and concrete. The wabi-sabi ideal, translated loosely by Frank Lloyd Wright as a "rusticity and simplicity that borders on loneliness," is considered the epitome of sophistication in Japanese interior design. The houses in this book invite us to rethink the wisdom of our hurried modern lifestyle and return to a simpler, slower life. The quintessential Japanese aesthetic can be seen in a 100-year-old minka farmhouse, an old merchant's machiya townhouse in Kyoto, a sprawling country Samurai villa, and in a modern seaside cottage. This book offers insights for architects and homeowners alike by providing inspiring and surprising alternatives, relevant to the design of homes anywhere in the world today.

Taschen GmbH Logo Modernism
Book SynopsisModernist aesthetics in architecture, art, and product design are familiar to many. In soaring glass structures or minimalist canvases, we recognize a time of vast technological advance which affirmed the power of human beings to reshape their environment and to break, radically, from the conventions or constraints of the past. Less well-known, but no less fascinating, is the distillation of modernism in graphic design. This unprecedented TASCHEN publication, authored by Jens Müller, brings together approximately 6,000 trademarks, focused on the period 1940–1980, to examine how modernist attitudes and imperatives gave birth to corporate identity. Ranging from media outfits to retail giants, airlines to art galleries, the sweeping survey is organized into three design-orientated chapters: Geometric, Effect, and Typographic. Each chapter is then sub-divided into form and style led sections such as alphabet, overlay, dots and squares. Alongside the comprehensive catalog, the book features an introduction from Jens Müller on the history of logos, and an essay by R. Roger Remington on modernism and graphic design. Eight designer profiles and eight instructive case studies are also included, with a detailed look at the life and work of such luminaries as Paul Rand, Yusaku Kamekura, and Anton Stankowski, and at such significant projects as Fiat, The Daiei Inc., and the Mexico Olympic Games of 1968. An unrivaled resource for graphic designers, advertisers, and branding specialists, Logo Modernism is equally fascinating to anyone interested in social, cultural, and corporate history, and in the sheer persuasive power of image and form.Trade Review“This fantastic collection of handsome logos testifies to the enduring power of clean, crisp, universally symbolic design language that is a far cry from the often trendy, cheesy, puffed-up corporate branding that exists today. National Galleries of Scotland Joan Eardley: A Sense of Place
Book SynopsisJoan Eardley (1921-1963) is one of Scotland's most admired artists. During a career that lasted barely fifteen years, she concentrated on two very distinct themes: children in the Townhead area of central Glasgow, and the fishing village of Catterline, just south of Aberdeen, with its leaden skies and wild sea. The contrast between this urban and rural subject matter is self-evident, but the two are not, at heart, so very different. Townhead and Catterline were home to tight-knit communities, living under extreme pressure: Townhead suffered from overcrowding and poverty, and Catterline from depopulation brought about by the declining fishing industry. Eardley was inspired by the humanity she found in both places. These two intertwining strands are the focus of this book, which looks in detail at Eardley's working processes. Her method can be traced from rough sketches and photographs through to pastel drawings and large oil paintings. Identifying many of Eardley's subjects and drawing on unpublished letters, archival records and interviews, the authors provide a new and remarkably detailed account of Eardley's life and art.Table of ContentsDirectors' Foreword Introduction TOWNHEAD Townhead and Children Children and the Street CATTERLINE Early Paintings of Catterline The South Row of Cottages Around No. 1 Catterline Beach and Sea Boats on the Shore and the Sea View of the Bay Chronology Maps of Townhead and Catterline Concise Bibliography Notes and References Credits

National Galleries of Scotland Cut and Paste: 400 Years of Collage
Book SynopsisCollage is one of the most popular and pervasive of all art-forms, yet this is the first historical survey book ever published on the subject. Featuring over 200 works, ranging from the 1500s to the present day, it offers an entirely new approach. Hitherto, collage has been presented as a twentieth-century phenomenon, linked in particular to Pablo Picasso and Cubism in the years just before the First World War. In Cut and Paste: 400 Years of Collage, we trace its origins back to books and prints of the 1500s, through to the boom in popularity of scrapbooks and do-it-yourself collage during the Victorian period, and then through Cubism, Futurism, Dada and Surrealism. Collage became the technique of choice in the 1960s and 1970s for anti-establishment protest, and in the present day is used by millions of us through digital devices. The definition of collage employed here is a broad one, encompassing cut-and-pasted paper, photography, patchwork, film and digital technology and ranging from work by professionals to unknown makers, amateurs and children. Taschen GmbH Expressionism
Book SynopsisSharp angles, strange forms, lurid colors, and distorted perspectives are classic hallmarks of Expressionism, the twentieth century movement that prioritized emotion over objective reality. Though particularly present in Germany and Austria, the movement’s approach flourished internationally and is today hailed as one of the most influential shifts in art history. With leading groups Die Brücke (The Bridge) and Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider), and key players such as Wassily Kandinsky, Egon Schiele, and Emil Nolde, the Expressionists disowned Impressionism, which they regarded as “man lowered to the position of a gramophone record of the outer world”, to depict instead a raw and visceral experience of life as it was felt, rather than seen on the surface. Their paintings brim with emotive force, conveyed in particular through intense and non-naturalistic color palettes, loose brushwork, and thick textures. Covering the group’s stylistic tendencies, influences, and most important protagonists, this introductory book explores the Expressionist panorama of moods, ideas, and emotions and their abiding quest for deep authenticity.Trade Review“This comprehensive overview incorporates an impressive range of reproductions.” * The Independent *

Search Press Ltd Atmospheric Flowers in Watercolour: Painting with
Book Synopsis'This is an extraordinary book.' Review of Jean Haines' Atmospheric Watercolours in The Artist Magazine 'It simply dazzles on the page and makes you want to grab your brushes and get going straight away.' Review of Jean Haines' Atmospheric Watercolours in The Leisure Painter Jean Haines is arguably one of the world’s most accomplished and inspirational artists, and in this, her fifth book, she explores one of her most beloved subjects - flowers. Taking inspiration from her own beautiful garden in the English countryside where she lives, Jean takes you on an artistic journey that not only teaches you how to create gorgeous paintings, but also shares with you the joy to be gained from the simple act of painting flowers. In this beautiful book, Jean explains with passion and enthusiasm how to loosen up your painting style and include just enough detail in your paintings to portray the essence of flowers, bringing them to life on the paper and infusing them with vibrancy and energy. She shares unreservedly the materials and techniques she uses, provides a wealth of expert tips and advice, and guides you step-by-step through numerous studies and projects. Throughout the book there are many glorious examples of Jean’s paintings of a dazzling variety of flowers, providing an abundance of inspiration for artists of all abilities. Jean uses Daniel Smith materials in this book but other materials can be used to achieve similar results. Trade ReviewJean uses watercolour about as loosely as it's possible to do so and her paintings have an almost iridescent quality that celebrates colour, atmosphere and life. Her flowers shimmer in the light and seem almost to possess movement. There are demonstrations, but they are not at the heart of the project - this book is about learning to see and how to communicate beauty and vision. -- The SAA * The SAA Catalogue 19/20 *'Jean is very good at explaining her working methods, so the lessons and demonstrations are admirably clear.' 'The essence of not just flower, but species is retained and you get the sense of a plant growing in the wild, dancing in the breeze and seen with the lack of distinction brought on by distance. When Jean is painting figures, it’s natural to say that she captures character and soul. While that’s not such an obvious factor with flowers, it’s hard not to make the comparison. This is what flowers are about more than what they are.' Read the full review here. -- Henry Malt * Artbookreview.net *Jean Haines just gets better and better. There have been hints for some time of what's here - subjects that appear as if out of a mist, painted with washes that are so wet they're practically tinctures. If the techniques look like magic, the results certainly are. Not everyone is going to want to paint like this. These are flowers as you've never seen them - indistinct semi-abstract shapes and colours that tell you nothing about structure, little about form and everything about appearance. Jean is a very spiritual painter (she's written about using painting as an aid to mindfulness) and this is a book about painting your emotional response to a popular subject she understands perfectly. If flowers have soul, Jeans has captured it. Although there are demonstrations here, they are short, because details of technique are not important. What matters is to understand your subject, and Jean does intimately. -- Henry Malt * The Artist, October 2018 *Already as a child, the artist loved flowers and studied their coloring, the variety of shapes and the seasonal changes. Through intense observation of nature and, of course, through exercises as often as possible, she was able to achieve masterful expressive power in the course of her career. Like any good instructional book, it begins by listing the materials she uses, such as paints, brushes, paper, and other useful things. Many tips about working with neat pigments and water help to understand why Jean Haine's watercolours are so vibrant and expressive. Numerous step-by-step instructions follow arranged according to colours and seasons. The extraordinary feature of this book is the lovingly worded accompanying text which reveals the painter's passion for nature that has grown over many decades. In many exercises, you will perfect the art of omission and abstraction, the harmonious use of colour and learn to add excitement to a picture. Summary: “Atmospheric Flowers” is at the same time a textbook and a relaxing reading book for all art lovers. Especially for the advanced painter, Jean Haines offers an inexhaustible source of inspiration, useful tips and painting instructions. After a thorough study of text and pictures, you will be able to improve and develop your own style. Novices can enjoy very personal text contributions and the variety of lively, expressive watercolours by Jean Haines. -- Nina Hartmann * www.kreativereview.blogspot.com *Jean Haines is an amazing painter. Her watercolours are about as far from representation you can get without venturing into abstraction, yet they capture the essence of her subjects perfectly. These are not flowers for the botanist - theres almost no detail and they appear as if out of the mist, shimmering, even moving in the light. Jean's interest is in colours and shapes and how these can be manipulated to reveal not just the appearance of her subjects but their spirit. These flowers are not specimens on a page but living entities that suprise and delight. It's impossible not to feel uplifted by them. To help you achieve this, Jean includes discussions about her subjects, as well as exercises that help you get to grips with her personal way of working. You'll kearn not just to paint, but to see, observe and understand. You may have gathered that I'm a fan. I love how Jean creates not just an image but a way of expressing your inner feelings and soul of your subject. * SAA Paint *Table of ContentsAuthor’s welcome Introduction Why paint flowers? Tate Publishing Performance in Contemporary Art
Book SynopsisStunningly beautiful, deeply puzzling, profoundly moving or intensely unsettling – performance art can evoke a wide variety of responses. In this important and richly illustrated book, Catherine Wood, one of the world’s leading curators and writers on the subject, provides the broadest and most up-to-date survey published in recent years. Wood proposes performance not as a genre of art separate from object-making but as an attitude that has infiltrated the entire terrain of contemporary art. From the musical-theatricals of Marvin-Gaye Chetwynd to the public encounters created by Tino Seghal and the social activism of Tania Bruguera, a hugely divergent set of practices has emerged in the past twenty to thirty years which embrace the worlds of sculpture and painting, spectacle and protest. Examining in turn individual, social and object-based approaches in the field, Wood first examines the influential performance art of the 1960s to 1980s: the body art of the Viennese actionists; the raw performances of Yoko Ono and Chris Burden; and the experiments of the Japanese Gutai group among others. She then explores how these sources have been revisited, reformed or rejected by contemporary artists in the twenty-first century. This impressive book encompasses international artists who fall outside the traditional European and North American focus, giving the reader the broadest and most up-to-date insight into the subject yet published.

Prestel Art Deco
Book SynopsisThe Art Deco style is so recognisable and widespread that its original impact on the culture in which it emerged has been all but lost in the clutter of imitation. This book draws our attention back to the birth of Art Deco—a period between two devastating world wars when industrialisation was flourishing, interest in archaeology was peaking and movements such as Cubism, Constructivism, Futurism and Modernism were turning the art world on its head. Brilliantly designed to reflect the style it celebrates, Art Deco is filled with hundreds of examples of painting, architecture, interiors, jewelry, crafts, furniture and fashion. Author Norbert Wolf traces the chronology of the Art Deco style by looking at the politics and culture of Europe in the 1920s and early 30s and the artistic movements that paralleled its popularity. He follows Art Deco’s influence in Europe and its spread to the Americas and Asia. Most importantly, this wide-ranging volume looks beyond the era of Art Deco’s origination to the present day. Pointing to the numerous revivals and contemporary echoes in painting and even literature, this beautiful volume demonstrates the style’s lasting importance.

Taschen GmbH Koolhaas. Elements of Architecture
Book SynopsisElements of Architecture focuses on the fragments of the rich and complex architectural collage. Window, façade, balcony, corridor, fireplace, stair, escalator, elevator and toilet: the book seeks to excavate the micro-narratives of building detail. The result is no single history, but rather the web of origins, contaminations, similarities, and differences in architectural evolution, including the influence of technological advances, climatic adaptation, political calculation, economic contexts, regulatory requirements, and new digital opportunities. It’s a guide that is long overdue—in Koolhaas’s own words, “Never was a book more relevant—at a moment where architecture as we know it is changing beyond recognition.” Derived, updated, and expanded from Koolhaas’s exhaustive and much-lauded exhibition at the 2014 Venice Architecture Biennale, this is an essential toolkit to understanding the fundamentals that comprise structure around the globe. Designed by Irma Boom and based on research from the Harvard Graduate School of Design, the 2,600-page monograph contains essays from Rem Koolhaas, Stephan Trueby, James Westcott and Stephan Petermann; interviews with Werner Sobek and Tony Fadell (of Nest); and an exclusive photo essay by Wolfgang Tillmans. In addition to comprehensively updated texts and new images, this edition is designed and produced to visually (and physically) embody the immense scope of its subject matter: Custom split-spine binding: our printer modified their industrial binding machine to allow for the flexible, eight-centimeter thick spine Contains a new introductory chapter with forewords, table of contents, and an index, located in the middle of the book (where it naturally opens due to its unique spine) Printed on 50g Opakal paper, allowing for the ideal level of opacity needed to realize Boom’s palimpsest-like design Translucent overlays and personal annotations by Koolhaas and Boom are woven in each chapter to create an alternative, faster route through the book Printed at the originally intended 100% size for full readability Trade Review“A brilliant and stimulating exploration of the stories behind the most mundane and ubiquitous elements of architecture.” * Financial Times *“Rem Koolhaas explains it all in Elements of Architecture. With examples ranging from the Sydney Opera House to St. Peter’s Basilica, this beautiful book also works as a history of architecture.” * The New York Times *“…when it comes to learning about the differences in architectural evolution, this is the book.” * forbes.com *“A mammoth undertaking: smashing open the last 100 years of architecture and ripping out its innards for forensic analysis.” * The Guardian *“…exhaustive and exhausting, mad and maddening.” * Metropolis Magazine *“A fascinating compendium of cultural references, iconic design, and everyday history that work together to turn architectural theory on its head.” * Architectural Digest *
