Book SynopsisThe artist and author, Owen Grant Innes, began life in Nova Scotia, ''the most British of the Canadian provinces.'' As a young boy in the 1960s, Innes felt an enormous sense of not belonging and found that through history, culture, and Queen Elizabeth II, he was connected to a wider world and, in that, found a sense of belonging. This book is a product of the unique relationship between sovereign and subject, acting as a ''love letter'' to the Queen. Including 24 beautiful artworks dedicated to the Queen''s life, from her birth to coronation, to the recent passing of her husband, Prince Philip. Alongside each painting is a quotation from Her Majesty or a reflection from the author. This book is a wonderful ode to the monarch and a tribute to the impact of her long reign.

  • An Indigo Summer

University of Wales Press An Indigo Summer

    1 in stock

Book Synopsis‘There is a certain feeling – standing between rows of richly dyed blue cloth – that you are within an enclave of protection, that within this ocean you can feel calm; a separation from the outside world.’ One summer, a mother and daughter are reunited in the small village of Betws Gwerful Goch in North Wales following the death of a father and grandfather. Ellie returned from studying at university, while Jeanette had been studying the art of indigo dyeing in Japan. In this lyrical memoir, Ellie Evelyn Orrell transports readers to their hillside garden, reflecting on a summer spent learning to work with indigo, and witnessing the power of creativity in moments of mourning and recovery. In it, she weaves together stories of resettling in a once-familiar landscape; the healing powers of art; the historical, mythological and present day properties of indigo; and the presence of this indelible colour within the Welsh landscape. An Indigo Summer is an absorbing meditation on art, rural life and roots, grief, creativity and the artistic process.

Book SynopsisBruce Gilden first journeyed to Haiti in 1984 to document the famous Mardi Gras festivities in Port au Prince. Fascinated by the country, he returned many times and his landmark monograph Haiti, a culmination of these photographs made during this period was first published in 1996. Gilden has continued to return to Haiti, and this new expanded edition of his book includes 40 new images made up until 2010, completing Gilden’s vision of the country. Though only an hour’s flight from Miami and the US mainland, Haiti remains the least-developed country in the Western Hemisphere. Haiti was freed from French colonial control and slavery in the early 19th Century but this independent came at a cost of an ‘independence debt’ which was not paid off until 1947. In addition, chronic instability, dictatorships and natural disasters in recent decades have left it as the poorest nation in the Americas.

Sansom & Co Into the Light: The Art of Egon Altdorf

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisFrom sculpture to woodcuts, glass design to poetry, the work of German artist Egon Altdorf crossed boundaries. ‘Making culture behind the barbed wire’ was how Altdorf endured wartime captivity, inspiring a life dedicated to art that was innovative, spiritual and redemptive. Exhibiting in London alongside sculptors Barbara Hepworth, Lynn Chadwick and Reg Butler at the Unknown Political Prisoner exhibition (1953), he adopted an increasingly abstract approach, rooted in Biblical symbolism yet embracing different faiths, notably in designs for the outstanding interior of Wiesbaden’s new synagogue. Exploring Altdorf’s work in ten interdisciplinary chapters, this book illuminates the still-overlooked contribution of artists who reshaped postwar existence: the lost generation.Table of ContentsGraham Ward: Introduction 1 Judith LeGrove Egon Altdorf: The lines of life 2 Deborah Lewer The prodigal and the prophecy: Egon Altdorf’s woodcuts and German art debates, c.1948–52 3 Dorothea Schöne Change and (re)reflection in the sculptural work of Egon Altdorf after 1945 4 Judith LeGrove A vital Conversation: Egon Altdorf and British sculpture in the early post-war years 5 Julia Kelly Symbolism of the cosmos in Egon Altdorf’s post-war sculpture 6 Elaine Morley Egon Altdorf and the transformative power of art: the postwar literary context 7 Nicolette David Beyond language: the relationship between art and poetry in Egon Altdorf’s work 8 David Jasper The art of Egon Altdorf: symbolism and spirituality 9 Ulrich Knufinke Wiesbaden’s new synagogue (1966) and its design by Egon Altdorf 10 Judith LeGrove Into the light: Egon Altdorf’s memorials to the future Arie Hartog Epilogue

  • Adam Bruce Thomson

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisAdam Bruce Thomson (1885-1976) was one of the most quietly impactful artists of his generation. Born in Edinburgh, he was among the earliest intake of students to train at the newly established Edinburgh College of Art. He went on to have a long-running teaching career at the College, supporting and encouraging successive cohorts. In his own practice, Thomson worked across a range of media, producing etchings, drawings, watercolours and oil paintings. A committed member of several artist-led societies, he exhibited widely and was well-respected by his peers. To date, however, his contribution to twentieth-century Scottish art remains largely unexplored. _Adam Bruce Thomson: The Quiet Path_ celebrates the achievements of this talented yet modest figure. It provides an in-depth account of his life and career, charting his creative development and examining his role as a teacher, mentor and friend to other artists. The book is fully illustrated, and draws from previously unseen archival material. It accompanies a major exhibition at Edinburgh's City Art Centre in 2024.

Sansom & Co Bill Coldstream Remembered

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisBill Coldstream Remembered: Portraits of a Painter is a collection of essays and shorter reminiscent pieces reflecting on the life and legacy of William Coldstream (1908-1987) by a wide range of those who knew and learned from him, whether by direct contact or through his work. Coldstream, known as Bill to his friends, and The Prof to generations of students at The Slade where he was Professor of Fine Art from 1949-1975, was a founder member of the Euston Road School, a mover and shaker at the GPO Film Unit, where he worked closely with Britten and Auden in the 1930s, and later a major figure in the London art world as it went through controversial changes from the 1960s onwards. In this collection he is remembered as much for his hilarity, humanity, and gift for friendship as for the lasting mark he made on the cultural landscape of a world in flux. In a delightfully diverse selection of studies and characteristic snapshots Bill emerges as a complex figure, a man of warmth and wit, a painter of obsessive rigour, a raconteur, and a champion of the underdog. Contributors include former students, fellow painters, and historians of modern British Art.

  • The Sea is Spread and Cleaved and Furled

Prototype Publishing Ltd. The Sea is Spread and Cleaved and Furled

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThe sea is spread and cleaved and furled is an interdisciplinary book and film-work by poet and visual artist Ahren Warner. It is a sequence of lyric poems, a narrative, voice-over and compendium of notes-to-the-self. Written and filmed across thirteen countries, from the Greek Islands to South East Asia to the Black Sea, the Balkans and the Baltic, it is at once a travelogue and an exploration of stagnating memory, of mental fracturing and its corollary: the exuberant performance of the self. It is both a love poem, an intermedia obsession with *cats*, and the personal and philosophical exploration of alienation, moving from Andrew Marvell to Cardi B, from Foucault and Back to the Future to the inane and repetitive close reading of Drake. The sea is spread and cleaved and furled is a poem and a film about the veneer of dialogue, narcissism and pleasure, about contemporary economies of capital, human movement and desire, and the resistance of the sensible or affective world to language itself.

Book SynopsisIn Kama Sutra A–Z Malika Favre blends typography, illustration, design and erotica in this exquisitely produced limited edition. The 'Kama Sutra A-Z' was initially developed by Malika Favre in 2013 as an art project and exhibition. Seven years later, she decided to gather this body of work into a limited edition book co-published with Counter-Print. The 26 letters are displayed as individual art pieces and accompanied by erotic excerpts, carefully curated by the artist, with a strong emphasis on female poets. The result is an eclectic and timeless collection of writings, from ancient times to today, including contributions from renowned poets such as Sandra Cisneros, Yusef Komunyakaa, Stephanie Burt, Warsan Shire, Kyle Dargan and Michael Faudet amongst many more… The dialogue created by this approach emphasises the timeless relevance of Erotica and is meant as a celebration of joy, pleasure and sensuality. Book SynopsisIn Soviet Seasons Kotov’s photographs reveal unfamiliar aspects of the post-Soviet terrain. From snow-blanketed Siberia in winter, to the mountains of the Caucasus in summer, these images show how a once powerful, utopian landscape has been affected by the weight of nature itself. This uniquely broad perspective could only be achieved by a photographer such as Kotov. Singularly dedicated to exploring every corner of his country, Kotov often hitch-hikes across vast distances. On these journeys he chronicles not only the architectural achievements of the Soviet empire, but also its overlooked or simply undocumented constructions. Arseniy Kotov: ‘In this book I reveal the beauty and diversity of this vast region, showing both cities and nature at different times of the year. I have travelled widely across Russia and its neighbouring countries, where I captured the landscape of post-Soviet cities and witnessed the seasonal changes.’Table of ContentsWinter – Siberia • Spring – Central Russia • Summer – Caucasus • Autumn – Ukraine
