Rocky Nook How Do I Do That In Photoshop?
Book SynopsisThe simplest, easiest, and quickest ways to learn over 250 Photoshop tips, tricks, and techniques! Scott Kelby, the world s #1 best-selling photography technique books author, is back with a totally updated and revised new edition of his bestselling book How Do I Do That In Photoshop? The first edition of this bestselling book presented an entirely new concept in Photoshop books one that s designed from the ground up to get you straight to whatever it is you need to do in Photoshop right now, get your answer fast, and get you back to editing your images in Photoshop. Thanks to Adobe s incredibly popular Creative Cloud Photography plan, which includes Photoshop and Lightroom, photographers are extending the depth and power of Lightroom by jumping over to Photoshop to do all those things Lightroom just can t do (or Lightroom can do, but in Photoshop, it s faster and easier, or the results are just better). Because Photoshop has so much power and depth, sometimes the things you need are well kinda hidden or not really obvious. There will be a lot of times when you need to get something done in Photoshop, and you know Photoshop can do it (because Photoshop can do just about anything), but you have no idea where Adobe hid that feature, or what the secret handshake is to do that thing you need now so you can get back to working on your images. That s why this book was created: to quickly get you to the technique, the shortcut, the setting, or exactly the right thing you need to do right now. Here s how it works: When you need to know how to do a particular thing, you turn to the chapter where it would be found (Layers, Printing, Fixing Problems, Special Effects, etc.), find the thing you need to do (it s easy, each page covers just one single topic), and Scott tells you exactly how to do it just like he was sitting there beside you, using the same casual style as if he were telling a friend. That way, you get back to editing your images fast. This isn t a book of theory, full of confusing jargon and detailed multi-step concepts. This is a book on which button to click, which setting to use, and exactly how and when to use it, so you re never stuck in Photoshop again. This will be your go to book that sits within reach any time you re working in Photoshop, and you are going to love having this type of help right at your fingertips.

OR Books Museum of Degenerates
Book SynopsisAn explosive exhibition of art by a celebrated cartoonist chronicling America’s march toward right-wing authoritarianism.Museum of Degenerates invites you to a delirious display of art by one of contemporary America’s most original and incendiary political cartoonists. Eli Valley’s extraordinary work is a scathing indictment of the entire American polity, with a particular focus on the issues of Israel and Judaism at a time when these have moved to the center of public debate and action. In these pages, Valley tips a homburg to German expressionists such as George Grosz and Otto Dix who featured in “The Exhibition of Degenerate Art,” a 1937 Munich show that sought to ridicule the work of artists critical of Hitler’s fascist regime. In an aesthetic that is strikingly original, Valley also draws on early twentieth-century American Yiddish cartoons and the work of artists who created the helter-skelter exuberance of MAD comics in the 1950s. Valley’s own art, accompanied here by extensive descriptions of its genesis and context, is a howl of protest against the political, cultural and media elites driving America into an authoritarian abyss. Here is anger, pure and hot, expressed in exquisite detail and, often, disturbingly funny.

University of Arkansas Press Moving Boarders: Skateboarding and the Changing
Book SynopsisOnce considered a kind of delinquent activity, skateboarding is on track to join soccer, baseball, and basketball as an approved way for American children to pass the after-school hours. With family skateboarding in the San Francisco Bay Area as its focus, Moving Boarders explores this switch in stance, integrating first-person interviews and direct observations to provide a rich portrait of youth skateboarders, their parents, and the social and market forces that drive them toward the skate park. This excellent treatise on the contemporary youth sports scene examines how modern families embrace skateboarding and the role commerce plays in this unexpected new parent culture, and highlights how private corporations, community leaders, parks and recreation departments, and nonprofits like the Tony Hawk Foundation have united to energize skate parks—like soccer fields before them—as platforms for community engagement and the creation of social and economic capital.Trade ReviewFor decades, skateboarders have considered themselves outside of mainstream culture. The skateboard, for these folks, is an emblem of independence, liberty, and creative provocation. As a lifelong skateboarder, I found Moving Boarders to be an accurate reflection of skateboarding's cultural qualities. Turner Publishing Company Charles Addams: A Cartoonist's Life: A
Book SynopsisThe Addams Family is creepy and kooky, but wait till you see what their creator had in his apartment. In Charles Addams: A Cartoonist’s Life, meet the legendary cartoonist behind the altogether ooky Addams Family in this first biography, written with exclusive access to Charles Addams’s private archives. Take a front-row seat to the widespread rumors and storytelling genius behind one of America’s oddest and most iconic creators. Even as The Addams Family grew in fame, the life of Charles Addams remained shrouded in mystery. Did he really sleep in a coffin and drink martinis garnished with eyeballs? In reality, Addams himself was charismatic and spellbinding as the characters he created. Discover the real stories behind Addams’s most famous, and most private drawings, including the cartoon that offended the Nazis. From his dazzling love for sports cars and beautiful women—Jackie Kennedy and Joan Fontaine among them—to the darkest relationship of his life, this witty book reveals Addams’s life as never before. With rare family photographs, previously published cartoons, and private drawings seen here for the first time, Linda H. Davis provides a fascinating journey into the life of a beloved American icon.Trade Review"Linda Davis has dug deep in her fabulous biography of The New Yorker's most mysterious and spooky (and all-together ooky) artist. The book's a scream." —Michael Maslin "A person's charm is difficult for a writer to convey on the printed page, but Linda Davis has managed it. At the close, I found myself feeling terribly cheated that I hadn't had the pleasure of Charlie Addams's company." —Edward Sorel, The New York Observer "If you don't appreciate martinis with eyeballs in them, this is not the book for you. For the rest of us, here is an irresistible riot of a read, an exhilarating, expertly mixed cocktail of words and images. Charles Addams's life was crowded with women—famous women, smart women, witty women, garden-variety, drop-dead beautiful women—but in Linda Davis he has truly met his match." —Stacy Schiff, Pulitzer Prize–winning author of Véra "Chas Addams remains a commanding presence as one of the iconic artists who contributed to shaping that unique satirical art form—the New Yorker cartoon. He was also the only New Yorker artist who, because of his brilliant and unorthodox originality, was the object of widespread and thoroughly misplaced fascination about his mental stability. Linda Davis has delved into his work and the brain, hand, and raucous life that shaped it, offering a complex, entertaining and completely riveting portrait of a gentle, loving man, and his passionate and engaged embrace of life." —Ed Koren, author and political cartoonist for The New Yorker

Third Man Books Car Ma
Book SynopsisCAR MA is artist and musician Alison Mosshart’s first printed collection of paintings, photographs, short stories, and poetry. It is a book about cars, rock n’ roll, and love. It’s a book about America, performance, and life on the road. It’s a book about fender bender portraiture, story tellin' tire tracks, and the never- ending search for the spirit under the hood. Mosshart imagines the auto body shop like some other Coney Island. And America’s highways- the last great roller coasters. Shows us that the engine on fire is connected to the guitar feeding back since birth. And the sensation of walking on stage and facing an audience is like the laugh before the scream in a car without brakes. She ruminates that automobiles- with their doors and mirrors and windows, engines and wheels and radios- portray us. Mirror our need to be in or to exit, our inward reflections and outward visions, our lifetimes of tinkering with the mysterious heart. That which runs until it doesn’t. Throughout history the car has been a symbol of freedom and hopeful adventure. It stands to reason it is also a symbol of our subsequent spinning out… over things we never thought could happen during a song that fucking good with the volume up that fucking loud. If you’ve ever found yourself feeling holy, pulling out of the gas station with a full tank, like the last beautiful free soul on this planet- This book is for you. In fact it’s probably about you.Trade ReviewCAR MA is a love letter to the motorcar, a book about rock & roll and love.“Part road diary, part automobile love song, part personal history, Car Ma dives deep into the soul of the American drive.”

ZE Books Intelligence for Dummies: Essays and Other
Book Synopsis"Enclosed in this beautiful package, please find: an agile mind, a perfect style, a canny and undeceivable heart, and a welcome, enduring presence in the reader's life." --Michael Chabon A portrait of a keen social observer at the center of the last 50 years of cultural life, captured through a vivid selection of O'Brien's own writings on music to fashion to downtown art and, just as importantly and unexpectedly, the political temperature of America. Glenn O'Brien collaborated with visual artists, writers, fashion houses, and musicians throughout his almost 50-year career. Intelligence for Dummies gathers Glenn O'Brien's essays, aphorisms and tweets, to create a portrait of the artist as cultural bellwether, complimented by artwork and photographs from his collaborators. A full color, hardcover edition, Intelligence for Dummies is a deeply personal apercu into Patti Smith and Jean Michel Basquiat's New York, and the culture of money that ensued. It also reveals O'Brien's incisive and prescient understanding of America's political culture, and of our current president.Trade Review"The smartly designed book features critical reviews, profiles, and essays alongside poems, freeform meditations, diatribes, tweets, and works of fiction. Intelligence for Dummies is not just a melange of O'Brien's greatest (and quirkiest) hits, however; the rounded selection pointedly reflects his virtuosity with form and the imaginative fluency he had within the medium of words." -Eugenie Dalland, Los Angeles Review of Books "The real keepers in this volume are precisely detailed and often moving evocations of his friends: Warhol, Basquiat, Nan Goldin, Richard Prince, James Nares. He conveys them in ways that are strangely difficult to quote, since they are contingent on chatter, circumstance, anecdote, and location, and evoke by accretion." -Luc Sante, New York Review of Books

Book SynopsisHow Evelyn Taocheng Wang’s nomadic life traversing cultures and continents has informed her explorations of identity This first comprehensive monograph on the work of China-born, Netherlands-based artist Evelyn Taocheng Wang (born 1981) unfolds along the path of her biography—beginning with her early studies in Chengdu, China, her arrival in 2008 in Berlin and Bleckede, Germany, from China, followed by a move to Frankfurt am Main to attend the Städel Academy as a guest student; time in Amsterdam at De Ateliers, Rotterdam; and, most recently, stays in Germany. The Song Cave The Sphinx and the Milky Way: Selections from the
Book SynopsisMystical and everyday reveries from the visionary American modernist In the early years of the 20th century, Charles Burchfield painted mystic and visionary landscapes, and with some of his contemporaries, including Edward Hopper, Georgia O’Keeffe and Grant Wood, can be seen to have built the foundations of a particularly North American sensibility that critic Dave Hickey said "continues to evoke an unrepentant, gnostic vision of this vast, rolling, abandoned continent—America without Europe—America without Americans—a massive, alluring kingdom." For nearly his entire life, Burchfield also kept a journal. Over 54 years, he filled nearly 10,000 pages. To call this journal epic would be an understatement. A masterpiece whose bulk has remained unread, it is a handwritten tome that combines elements of the American nature journal with a dash of 19th-century spiritual autobiography. It is a record of a man who spent much of his life looking at and considering the sky. In this comparatively small selection pulled from the original 62 volumes, we find Burchfield writing about sitting in the grass with his wife to nap and watch the sunset. He writes about the elation he feels at seeing the first flowers in the spring. He writes about the rain, wind and sun. There’s the resentment of having a job; the depression that sneaks in as he gets older; sometimes, too, he writes about the state of human progress; and occasionally, thoughts about God. It is the tender record of a life devoted to the essences of earthly beauty. Best known for his romantic, often fantastic depictions of nature, watercolorist Charles Burchfield (1893–1967) developed a unique style of watercolor painting that reflected distinctly American subjects and his profound respect for nature.

Carpenter Center for the Visual Arts Renée Green: Pacing
Book SynopsisLegacies of modernism reappraised and reconstructed in an epic project by Renée Green American artist Renée Green (born 1959) spent two years engaged with the Carpenter Center for the Visual Arts at Harvard University, during which she presented a series of interlinked public programs and exhibitions, culminated with her major exhibition Within Living Memory (2018). Green’s Carpenter project, Pacing, is a meditation spurred by inhabiting an architectural icon—Le Corbusier’s Carpenter Center—while exploring the historical and institutional legacies of modernism’s other forms, including cinema, visual art, poetry, music and literature. This handsome publication illuminates Green’s unfolding process, with a sequence of exhibitions that took place from 2015 and culminating in Pacing: Facing in Toronto; Tracing in Como, Italy; Placing in Berlin; Spacing in Lisbon; and Begin Again, Begin Again in Los Angeles. The result is a meditation on creative processes across histories and media, partially inspired by two architectural icons: Rudolf M. Schindler and Le Corbusier. Despite grand ambitions, Le Corbusier was only able to realize two buildings in the Americas, the Carpenter Center in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and Casa Curuchet, in La Plata, Argentina. In Pacing, dreams, projections and geographically distant buildings are put into dialogue through time, weaving a layered constellation of unexpected relations. Lavishly illustrated, Renée Green: Pacing features new texts by Gloria Sutton and Fred Moten, and brings together a series of previously unpublished conversations between the artist and Yvonne Rainer, Nora M. Alter and Mason Leaver-Yap. Additional contributions are provided by Nicholas Korody, William S. Smith and Carpenter Center director Dan Byers.

The proliferation of violent imagery, particularly since the expansion of mass media during and after World War II, has led to artworks that marshal consciousness of traumatic events and their cultural processing. These developments in art run parallel with the emergence of trauma studies, which confront the repercussions of traumatic events: the Holocaust, global conflict, sexual violence, systemic racism and gender discrimination. Psychic Wounds brings together artists from the mid-20th century to the present who have addressed trauma in their work. The book also contains an anthology of critical writings on trauma by curators, art historians and theorists, among them Robert Storr, Griselda Pollock, Huey Copeland and Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev. Artists include: Gerhard Richter, Kazuo Shiraga, Louise Bourgeois, Kiki Smith, Glenn Ligon, Felix Gonzalez-Torres, Carrie Mae Weems, Cindy Sherman, Bruce Nauman and Anicka Yi.

Columbia Global Reports Beautiful, Gruesome, and True: Artists at Work in
Book SynopsisWhy have some of the most interesting artists of our time committed themselves to some of the most devastating conflicts on Earth? Why are some of the most interesting artists of our time committed to engaging with conflict and exploitation around the world? Beautiful, Gruesome, and True tells the stories of three of them: Amar Kanwar makes riveting films about the destruction of rural India in the drive to extract natural resources. Teresa Margolles creates haunting installations from the traces of crime scenes and drug-related violence in Mexico. The anonymous collective Abounaddara has produced more than four hundred short films chronicling the uprising and civil war in Syria. Drawing on years of research and extensive reporting, Kaelen Wilson-Goldie vividly recounts how a group of “political” artists found ways to produce remarkable works of art that demand deliberate and methodical ways of thinking—works that are contemplative, thoughtful, even redemptive. Named one of the best art books of the year by Holland Cotter of the New York Times “A gifted critic and a compelling journalist, Wilson-Goldie offers many important insights into the challenges these artists face in their confrontation with authority, repressive regimes, death, and violence. The story she tells could not be more timely.” —Glenn D. Lowry, David Rockefeller Director, Museum of Modern ArtTrade ReviewNamed one of the best art books of the year by Holland Cotter of the New York Times “Far from solving the world's problems with art, as Wilson-Goldie illustrates in her crystalline analysis of their practices, these artists have impacts in their worlds and ours, and that might just be enough to make a difference.” —Art Asia Pacific “Wilson-Goldie has chosen to write about artists working in places where governmental institutions have collapsed or capitulated to outside forces, allowing criminality and violence to flourish. In such circumstances, Wilson-Goldie argues, art may operate as a proxy for political discourse that has otherwise been suppressed.” —Art in America “Wilson-Goldie’s act of paying attention is a practical, sensitive, and proximate way of thinking about what is often represented from a distance. Her writing in this book is a kind of faith—in art, in the importance of the stories it tells, in how we meet through it, and recognize each other.” —art-agenda “Kaelen Wilson-Goldie writes with clarity and great knowledge about the artists Amar Kanwar, Teresa Margolles, and the Syrian collective Abounaddara. A gifted critic and a compelling journalist, she offers many important insights into their art, and the challenges they each face in their confrontation with authority, repressive regimes, death, and violence. The story she tells is one of persistence and dedication, contingency and tragedy, and the ability of art to transcend the horrors of murder, violence, war and repression. It could not be more timely.” —Glenn D. Lowry, David Rockefeller Director, Museum of Modern Art “Without cynicism or naïveté, Kaelen Wilson-Goldie finds and engages deeply with artists who maintain unflinching contact with the violence of the present. No one can know whether real social change will ever arrive, but without doubt the art of Kanwar, Margolles, and Abounaddara, as beautifully unfolded in this book, will stand as a passionate, imaginative, and scrupulous history of those who refused to turn away.” —Katy Siegel, Eugene V. and Clare E. Thaw Endowed Chair in Modern American Art, Stony Brook University; and Senior Curator, Baltimore Museum of Art “Kaelen Wilson-Goldie writes with depth, nuance, and empathy about three artists who have dedicated their lives to grappling with violence, conflict, and war. She shows that it’s both possible and essential to produce politically engaged art that truly matters, without fear or compromise. This book is an important contribution to contemporary debates over journalism, misinformation, and the nature of truth.” —Mohamad Bazzi, director, Hagop Kevorkian Center for Near Eastern Studies, New York University

ZE Books The War Is Here: Newark 1967
Book SynopsisWith a foreword by the Honorable Ras J. Baraka, 40th Mayor of Newark, NJ, The War Is Here is Life magazine photographer Bud Lee's dramatic, empathetic, and still shocking record of the Newark uprising of 1967-a pivotal moment in a summer of protest and rage across the country, whose reverberations we still feel today. July 1967. After the arrest, beating, and imprisonment of cab driver John Smith by local police, the city of Newark-already a tinderbox-became a hotbed of protest and retaliation. Over five long days, 26 people were killed by police gunfire and hundreds more were injured, thousands arrested, and millions of dollars in property damage caused. The scars on the city remained for decades. Bud Lee, a 26-year-old novice photographer for Life magazine, was called upon to cover the civic uprising in Newark as it broke out. Lee and Life reporter Dale Wittner arrived to find a majority Black population-already struggling under a corrupt local government and a vicious, authoritarian police force-trying to persevere in extraordinary circumstances: stores burned and looted; a city under siege by trigger-happy city and state police; and the young, inexperienced, and exhausted National Guardsmen sent to patrol it day and night. The War Is Here documents the several days Bud Lee spent in Newark. These photographs capture life in a city transformed into an urban war zone. Lee witnessed first-hand two policemen shoot a man named Billy Furr in the back. Lee's dramatic images of this cold-blooded murder ran in Life. The same bullets also hit and wounded a 12-year-old boy named Joey Bass Jr., who had been playing at a nearby intersection. Lee's stark, emotional image of Bass, lying bleeding and contorted in pain on dirty concrete, ran on the July 28, 1967 cover of Life, sparking a national conversation on race and police violence and becoming the defining image of the "long, hot summer" of '67-a summer of fire and fury, protest and rage across the country. Over half a century later, Bud Lee's raw, desolate, and empathetic photographs of the people of Newark, at a turning point in the city's history, continue to resonate: a testament to their resilience and fortitude.Trade Review"The Summer of 1967 lives in the DNA of our city-the traumatic pain, the savage injustices, the violence and destruction. Also, what was born from that summer was a Newark with a better understanding of its own indelible core. The stirring images within The War is Here bring Newark's summer of 1967 back to life in vivid detail, reminding us that the past is with us." -New Jersey Senator Cory Booker "Bud Lee captures the 1967 Newark riots.... Lee's pictures opened up a nationwide debate about police violence. A new book, The War Is Here: Newark 1967, collects those images, many of them unpublished, and reinhabits not only the fear and the violence-but also ... the defiance of that bloody week in Newark history." -Tim Adams, The Observer "The War Is Here represents one of the most comprehensive collections of photos about the 1967 Newark Rebellion and Billy Furr that I have ever seen. It tells a story of police violence, community response, and the destructive narrative that was like a weight upon the city of Newark for many years. I can appreciate it both as a memorial to the photographer, who I never met, and as a story about what we once endured." -Junius Williams, Official Newark Historian, author of Unfinished Agenda: Urban Politics in the Era of Black Power "Bud Lee was a graphic storyteller who made informative, often gripping, pictures of despair and anger. He watched and documented Billy Furr being fatally shot in the back and the critical wounding of twelve-year-old Joey Bass, Jr. His photographs of death and destruction were given the cover and a six-page feature in Life. Six pages and a cover were effective then, but now we have The War Is Here, an in-depth record by a gifted and empathetic photographer, 'lest we forget.'" -Anne Wilkes Tucker, Gus and Lyndall Wortham Curator of Photography Emerita at the Museum of Fine Arts Houston. "Powerful." -Dave Simpson, The Guardian "We live in a time when journalists, including photojournalists, have lost the public trust. Bud Lee was a reporter. He wasn't seeking to impress you with his singular vision. He was in Newark to look, listen, and report on the complex, tragic events unfolding in front of him. And he did his job, but it's the way that Bud Lee addressed the tragedy that sets him apart. We see that in The War Is Here." -Eugene Richards, photojournalist (formerly with Magnum Photos, now VII Photo Agency), author of Cocaine True, Cocaine Blue, The Fat Baby, and War Is Personal
