Book SynopsisA treasure trove of visual delights: examples of the sketchbooks of sixty international illustrators offer new insights into their artistic practice. Intimate and often unseen, the sketchbook means something different to each illustrator. It might be a beautiful object, a work of art in its own right, where every line is painstakingly considered. It might be a pictorial playground, where mistakes can make art. The boundaries between sketchbooks, notebooks and visual journals are often blurred, lending to the creativity that fills their pages. It is likely that you will recognize many of the illustrators featured, including classic childhood favourites Beatrix Potter, Jean de Brunhoff, Edward Ardizzone and Tove Jansson, and established names such as Beatrice Alemagna, Oliver Jeffers and Shaun Tan. • Francesca Woodman: On Being an Angel

Verlag der Buchhandlung Walther Konig Francesca Woodman: On Being an Angel

Book SynopsisThe American photographer Francesca Woodman (1958–1981) created a body of fascinating photographic works in a few intense years before her premature death. Her oeuvre has been the object of numerous in-depth studies and major exhibitions in recent years, and her photographs have inspired artists all over the world. Woodman’s photographs explore gender, representation, sexuality and body. Her production includes several self-portraits, using herself and her friends as models. The figures are often placed behind furniture and other interior elements; occasionally, the images are blurred in such a way that their identity is hidden from the viewer. The intimate nature of the subject matter is enhanced by the small formats. Woodman worked in unusual settings such as derelict buildings, using mirrors and glass to evoke surrealist and occasionally claustrophobic moods. Moderna Museet will present some hundred photographs by Francesca Woodman, with a selection from the series and themes she explored. The exhibition is produced by Moderna Museet in association with Betty and George Woodman and the Estate of Francesca Woodman. Alongside this exhibition, Moderna Museet will present a compilation of photography from the same period from its collection, to show Francesca Woodman in context and expand the perspective on her oeuvre to the public.

Thames & Hudson Ltd The Artists Sketchbook

    7 in stock

Book SynopsisArtists have been using sketchbooks for centuries as integral tools in the creative process, especially during the preparatory stages leading to the creation of great works of art. Serving as portable companions, they accompany artists on their physical and mental journeys, offering intimate glimpses into their sources of inspiration. They are used to document daily life, national events, the landscape, and natural world with immediacy. Many artists have used sketchbooks to create meticulous botanical records, while others, such as the Pre-Raphaelites, planned their most important paintings within their pages.Selected from the Victoria and Albert Museum?s extensive collection, the featured sketchbooks range from historic to contemporary examples including works by Leonardo da Vinci, Angelica Kauffman, George Romney, John Constable, Beatrix Potter, E. H. Shepard, Paul Nash, Shahed Saleem, and Julie Verhoeven. Lesser-known artists, especially women, for whom sketchbooks provided a creative outlet, are also highlighted. Drawn from Britain, Europe, and beyond, the wide-ranging selection of sketches blurs the boundaries between art and journal. The Artist''s Sketchbook

Taschen GmbH Masterpieces of Fantasy Art. 40th Ed.

    3 in stock

Book SynopsisFantasy art, that colorful blend of myth, muscle and sexy maidens, took off in 1923 with the launch of Weird Tales magazine, was reinvigorated in the 1960s with The Lord of the Rings, Conan the Barbarian paperbacks with Frank Frazetta covers, and the late ’60s emergence of fantasy psychedelia. It went big in the ’70s with the role-playing game Dungeons & Dragons, the brilliant French magazine Métal Hurlant, and the first Star Wars film. The number of active artists peaked in that decade, but a new generation of fans discovered the genre through fantasy trading card games in the ’90s, leading to a massive interest in the art form today.Frank Frazetta’s oil paintings—when they infrequently come to market—have sold for more than $ 5 million in recent years. Fans line up at Comic-Cons to meet Boris Vallejo, Rodney Matthews, Greg Hildebrandt, Michael Whelan, and Philippe Druillet, and memorialize dead icons HR Giger, Jeffrey Catherine Jones, and Frazetta. This book features original paintings, contextualized by preparatory sketches, sculptures, calendars, magazines, and paperback books, for an immersive dive into this dynamic, fanciful genre. Insightful bios go beyond Wikipedia to give a more accurate and eye-opening look into the life of each artist. This collection will reign as the most exquisite and informative guide to this popular subject for years to come.Trade Review“A book at least as epic as its subject.” * La Liberté *“It was likely the first art you really enjoyed, discovered on a comic book, paperback, or record cover. The book is not meant to be a comprehensive overview, nor to provide a definitive statement on the Museum?s collection. On the contrary, it is designed to explore the complexity and variety of possibilities that exist within the collection, and to suggest new and imaginative ways of understanding the works of art that constitute it. Featuring 375 works, including a greater representation of works by women, artists of color and artists from around the world, this new edition is both a record of the Museum?s past and a statement in anticipation of an exciting future.

Book SynopsisBuilt to last, built to impress, built with style and grandeur ? it is all the more remarkable when the most ostentatious of buildings fall into disrepair and become ruins. From imperial residences and aristocratic estates to hotels and urban mansions, Abandoned Palaces tells the stories behind dilapidated structures from all around the world. From ancient Roman villas to the French colonial hill station in Cambodia that was one of the final refuges of the Khmer Rouge, the book charts the fascinating decline of what were once the homes and holiday resorts of the most wealthy. Ranging from crumbling hotels in the Catskill Mountains or in Mozambique to grand mansions in Taiwan, and from an unfinished Elizabethan summerhouse to a modern megalomaniac?s estate too expensive ever to be completed, the reasons for the abandonment of these buildings include politics, bankruptcy, personal tragedies, natural and man-made disasters, as well as changing tastes and fashions. With 150 outstanding colour photographs exploring more than 100 hauntingly beautiful locations, Abandoned Palaces is a brilliant and moving pictorial examination of worlds we have left behind. Over 150 superb colour photographs Expert text explains the stories behind 100 palaces, hotels, estates and mansions Wide selection of grand buildings from all around the world
