  • Taylor & Francis Ltd If Its Purple Someones Gonna Die

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisIf It's Purple, Someone's Gonna Die is a must-read book for all film students, film professionals, and others interested in filmmaking. This enlightening book guides filmmakers toward making the right color selections for their films, and helps movie buffs understand why they feel the way they do while watching movies that incorporate certain colors. Guided by her twenty-five years of research on the effects of color on behavior, Bellantoni has grouped more than 60 films under the spheres of influence of six major colors, each of which triggers very specific emotional states. For example, the author explains that films with a dominant red influence have themes and characters that are powerful, lusty, defiant, anxious, angry, or romantic and discusses specific films as examples. She explores each film, describing how, why, and where a color influences emotions, both in the characters on screen and in the audience. Each color section begins with an illustrated Home Page that includes examples, anecdotes, and tips for using or avoiding that particular color.Conversations with the author's colleagues - including award-winning production designers Henry Bumstead (Unforgiven) and Wynn Thomas (Malcolm X) and renowned cinematographers Roger Deakins (The Shawshank Redemption) and Edward Lachman (Far From Heaven) - reveal how color is often used to communicate what is not said. Bellantoni uses her research and experience to demonstrate how powerful color can be and to increase readers awareness of the colors around us and how they make us feel, act, and react. Learn how your choice of color can influence an audience's moods, attitudes, reactions, and interpretations of your movie's plot. See your favorite films in a new light as the author points out important uses of color, both instinctive and intentional. Learn how to make good color choices, in your film and in your world. Trade Review"Patti Bellantoni's If Its Purple, Someones Gonna Die has given us a highly entertaining exploration of the world of color and its impact on our emotions. Told through a careful analysis of motion pictures that have used color to enhance or define their characters or dramatic needs, we are given a lively and insightful view of our reactions to the film experience.Leading us gently but firmly through places we may have taken for granted, we find revelations that can be of real help to readers who use color to shape emotional responses to concepts, as well as physical environments. We can never again take theworld of color for granted." --Robert Boyle, four-time Oscar-nominated Production Designer (North by Northwest, The Birds, The Thomas Crown Affair, Fiddler on the Roof)"A wonderful idea and very impressive! Patti's book shows the importance of color in developing both character and story." --Henry Bumstead, two-time Oscar-winning Production Designer (To Kill a Mockingbird, The Sting, Unforgiven, Mystic River)"We see color--Patti Bellantoni feels color. She is passionate about how we (the audience) are affected by the use of color as an emotion in film. This book pulls me back into my favorite films and helps me look at them in a new way. The book is a first of its kind and a great asset for our students on the impact of cinematography and production design." --Judy Irola, ASC, Head of Cinematography,USC School of Cinema-Television"Bellantoni's evidence is confident and her examples are authoritative. Like Robert McKee's Story Seminars, hers is a breakthrough concept." --Sam L. Grogg, Ph.D, Dean, AFI Conservatory"There comes a point, as Bellantoni spins example after example, where it all suddenly clicks. The use of color in motion pictures is not just a happy coincidence, but a conscious artistic choice that wafts with concrete meaning through all of the film's language. Unconscious and primitive in many respects, conscious and sophisticated in many more, the use and choice of color in motion pictures depends on the filmmakers instinct and intellect, the pillars of all great art. No one can ever look at moving pictures the same way after steeping themselves in this excellent book of discovery."--Sam L. Grogg, Ph.D, Dean, AFI Conservatory"Color remains one of the filmmaker's greatest assets and opportunities. With the new arsenal of digital tools available, the range of options for color has grown dramatically in the last three years. For filmmakers, Patti Bellantoni's new book is a great resource for what is now possible."--Robert Hoffman, Vice President, Marketing, Technicolor Entertainment Services"Patti Bellantoni has opened our eyes to the power of color in our lives. Her book is an invaluable resource not only for film professionals but also for artists, writers, designers, psychologists, educators, healers, and all who seek a deeper understanding of visual experience." --Judith Searle, Author, The Literary Enneagram: Characters from the Inside Out"A fascinating exploration of how color affects our emotional perception of the world. Although Patti primarily discusses the impact of color in film, her book is an indispensable resource for all visual artists." --Ralph Funicello,Tony Award nominated Set Designer,Don Powell Chair in Set Design, San Diego State University"Patti does a wonderful job of dissecting color and its presence in film. She makes us aware of the visual path in our brain and how a film touches us. This is a critical concept as we contemplate the digital medium in film making!" --Beverly Wood Holt, Exec. VP Technical Services & Client Services, Deluxe Laboratories."This is a crossover book with a broad appeal and a longer life. It's not only about movies. It's about how people feel when they watch movies." Barnes & Noble manager, Los Angeles"In this book we are really watching movies through designer's eyes and what a refreshing examination it makes...Anyone with creative input into filmmaking will find this book a very useful guide in creating moods and emotions for an audience...This is the movie equivalent of having colour and its effect explained by Monet, it is that fresh and original...Anyone who works on a film set in any capacity will have their money's worth out of this movie colour guide for years to come." - www.ukfilmfinance.com "Patti Bellantoni's If It's Purple, Someones Gonna Die has given us a highly entertaining exploration of the world of color and its impact on our emotions. Book SynopsisThe life of Scottish watercolourist William Alister Macdonald (1861-1956) contained more mystery and intrigue than a novel by the authors he knew as friends. Mid-life in the early 1900s he painted widely across Britain, Europe and North Africa. Aged sixty, abandoning his wife and son in London, he settled in Tahiti, where he befriended authors Charles Nordhoff, James Norman Hall and Zane Grey. Critical acclaim of his work peaked in 1935 with the discovery of over 120 watercolours capturing London streets and lost panoramas from the Thames, its river life and trade at the turn of the last century, now part of the Wakefield Collection at London's Guildhall. Yet in Tahiti his reputation has endured with appreciation of his timeless, exquisite landscapes and studies of paradise. This first fully illustrated biography of Macdonald's life provides a long-overdue opportunity for his European and Polynesian work to be reappraised and his story told.

Steven Heller, design historianOften credited with inventing the term graphic design, W.A. Dwiggins was a quintessential makerfabricating his own tools and experimenting with design in areas as wide-ranging as stamps, currency, books, kites, marionettes, theatrical sets and lighting. Despite this feat, a thorough study of this revolutionary figure has never been published widely in the tradeuntil now.At nearly 500 pages and with over 1,000 color illustrations, W.A. Dwiggins: A Life in Design offers an engaging overview of the designer's wide-ranging creative output and lasting impact on the graphic arts. Dwiggins (18801956) studied printing and typography under Frederic Goudy in Chicago. He designed four widely used Linotype faces: Caledonia, Eldorado, Electra and Metro. 1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book tells the story of the Lovell Health House in Los Angeles, designed and built by Richard Neutra from 1927 to 1929, from its inspiration through its construction to its impact. It was a demonstration house': widely documented and written about in leading architectural journals when it was built. These publications elevated the house to the status of an icon in the history of modernism and an essential work of the international modern movement, from Berlin to Tokyo and Paris to Milan, at the high point of its influence and fame. The Lovell Health House helped to launch the international career of one of the central figures of 20th-century architecture, pioneered the use of concrete and steel in the dwelling, radically advanced the ideals of hygienic, carefree, and open-air living, and explored new relationships between space, structure, the natural world, and physical and psychological well-being. The book is framed with an introduction by Edward Dimenberg and includes new texts by Crosby Doe, Thomas Hines and Nicholas Olsberg and historic texts by Willard D. Morgan and Richard Neutra. At the heart of the book are six narrated portfolios of visual and textual documentation on the background, design, making, circulation, reception and resonance of this seminal house. Including photography by Willard Morgan in which he documents every stage of construction to the building's completion, this published imagery was exceptionally rich, refined, varied, widespread, and influential.

  • Beryl Cook Tom of Finland Boijmans Van Beuningen

Paul Holberton Publishing Ltd Beryl Cook Tom of Finland Boijmans Van Beuningen

Book SynopsisThis bold catalogue brings together the work of two cultural icons for the very firsttime: Beryl Cook (19262008) and Tom of Finland (19201991). It was inspired by the2024 exhibition Beryl Cook / Tom of Finland at Studio Voltaire in London. Beryl Cook was a painter renowned for her exuberant style and descriptions of everydaylife. Her work captures the social milieu of the areas she lived in and visited, notablyPlymouth. Her most enduring images are of larger-than-life women carousing innightclubs, eating in cafés or enjoying ribald hen parties, rendered in graphic andcolourful forms. Cook's work came to prominence in the mid-1970s and she quicklybecame known as one of Britain's best-loved artists, highly recognised for her distinctiveworks, which are both celebratory and provocative. Tom of Finland's pioneering depictions of homosexual machismo in his images ofbikers, soldiers, cowboys, sailors and labourers broadly represent queer, leather andmuscle communities. A master draughtsman, he used his works to give form to animaginative universe that, in turn, helped fuel real-world liberation movements and hadsignificant influence on a wide range of cultural figures including the Village People,Freddie Mercury, Jean Paul Gaultier and Robert Mapplethorpe. Beryl Cook / Tom of Finland puts their work into conversation for the first time. Thepairing is perhaps unexpected, yet immediate and compelling relationships betweentheir practices are evident. Fundamentally, both artists employed a sustained andcoherent way of hyper-realising the body in images that celebrate pleasure and denyshame. Together, their works reveal interconnected ideas surrounding sexuality, gender, taste and class. Artist and writer Huw Lemmey has contributed an incisive new essay exploringthe queer contexts inherent to Tom of Finland's work, but that also finds latentresonance in Cook's paintings of gay bars and shapely women. He further considersthe commercial forms of distribution that made their complex bodies of works highlyaccessible. Spanning five decades of paintings, drawings and archival materials, this companioncatalogue contributes to new readings of the artists' practices and their enduring impacton popular culture.

Book SynopsisTrade ReviewBlades infectious and detailed story telling, captured by Chris Pape (Freedom) is really engaging and gives the book an added bit of depth that most graff books fail to deliver. It's what sets this book apart from most others out there and makes the story telling easily jump from one topic to the next. You want to know where some of the ideas for his concepts come from? Its in here. You want to know his fighting style when he was a young dude in high school? Its in here. The book, as you would expect, is crammed full of old train flicks. The well known classics are in here but there is a whole load more of rare flicks from Blade and members of the legendary The Crazy 5. Throughout the book Blade drops some history, giving the reader a lesson in the development of graff and those who were key in developing the scene. The accompanying photos add some context showing the development of graffiti from the early 70s beginning of single hits through to whole car burners. 101 stories later and the book comes to an end with a story of the TC5 get together in a bar and what they are all up to now. A book worth getting your hands on? Definitely. - scottishgraffiti.blogspot.co.uk Oct 2014

Warburg's seminal study of the "serpent ritual" of the Hopi people, which grew out of a trip to the American Southwest undertaken by Warburg in 1895–1896.Trade ReviewThe text casually titled Images from the Region of the Pueblo Indians of North America was originally a lecture intended to prove that its author was sane. Aby Warburg delivered his talk on April 21, 1923, before an audience of inmates, doctors and guests at the Bellevue sanatorium in Kreuzlingen, Switzerland. His lecture is fascinating. In it, Warburg recounts his youthful journey to the American West as the story of civilization told in reverse. * New Republic *Table of ContentsPrefatory NoteList of IllustrationsAby M.
