  • Subodh Gupta: Common Man

JRP Ringier Subodh Gupta: Common Man

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisSubodh Gupta (born 1964) agglomerates everyday Indian household objects such as cooking utensils into monumental entities such as mushroom clouds or skulls, often sabotaging the fiction of intrinsic value through witty inversion and conjunction. Among the fruits of his methods are sculptural works such as bronze mangos, Hindu-swastika ceiling fans and worn-out sandals placed alongside three-dimensional Mona Lisas. Gupta''s mostly found materials, which range in texture from aluminum, bronze and stainless steel to fiberglass and neon, identify themselves as Indian in origin, but are recomposed into sculptural meanings accessible to all nationalities (one implication of the title''s common man). This monograph is published on the occasion of Gupta''s first solo exhibition in London; alongside full-color reproductions, it includes an interview between Gupta and Hans Ulrich Obrist and an essay on the artist''s work by Martin Herbert.

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisThis is a book about four cities which were several times, and especially in connection with World War II, forcedly, put into completely new national contexts. This was affected by coercion from outside. The changes included genocide and forced displacement, but preserved built environment testifies past populations and national contexts. This book describes the urban environment in the four cities before World War II, and how the present population handles the memories of the past for future development. In connection with World War II and its aftermaths, many of the four cities residents of Chişinău, Černivci, Lviv and Wrocław were either killed or subject to forced migration beyond the new national borders. People settled in the city environment which still bore the traces of the earlier population and the earlier urban life that had been brutally put to an end. Due to the continued Russian military aggression on the territory of Ukraine, this study takes on a new relevance. · This title is part of the Histories of Ukrainian Architecture programme initiated by DOM publishers in response to Russia's attack on Ukraine's sovereignty on 24 February 2022.

  • Frank O. Gehry, Museo Guggenheim Bilbao (Opus 32)

Edition Axel Menges Frank O. Gehry, Museo Guggenheim Bilbao (Opus 32)

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThere is no doubt at all that Gehry's Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao is one of the most spectacular buildings of recent years. As the central element in Bilbao's comprehensive urban renewal programme the building raised high expectations from the outset. Its site between river, railway, bridge and new town makes it a symbol of the Basque metropolis that can be seen from a considerable distance. It is both the heart of the city and a test bed for the arts, representing both public presence and artistic change. The process by which it was created demonstrates the most recent advances in computer aided design and in material manufacture. For a long time design and building were broken down into a large number of individual components, Gehry's museum unifies this process and is thus able to create fluent links between architectural detail and urban impact. But the innovations do not stop at technology, they also extend to the way in which the interior spaces are shaped. These are extremely varied in form, as the museum is not so much designed to house a permanent exhibition of the collection, but to enable artists to create installations. In contrast with the usual neutral gallery spaces, Gehry offers a whole variety of stages for artistic presentation. His artist friends have risen to the challenge of his architecture and are experimenting very successfully with this new way of showing their work to the public.

Book SynopsisI believe art re-ritualizes the everyday to reveal something fresh about our lives. This revelation is a vitality and it is a power to change the world.Pope.LPope.L (b. Newark, US, 1955; d. Chicago, US, 2023) was one of the foremost creators of political conceptual art in the United States. Among his best-known works rank his Crawl performances, for which the artistvariously wearing business attire, a dandelion in hand, or a Superman costumegot on his hands and knees to crawl through New York's streets for miles. Challenging bystanders to look down and actually see him, he used his body to expose inequalities and power differentials in society. His oeuvre also spanned the media of painting, sculpture, installation art, and photography. Devising a practice with deep roots in philosophy and the theater, Pope.L from the 1970s onward produced seminal works exploring questions of language, gender, racism, and community. Hospital documents Pope.L's 2023 exhibition at the South London Gallery, which tragically turned out to be the last in his lifetime. With an essay by Legacy Russell, an introduction by Margot Heller, and an interview with the artist.

  • Idea Work: Lessons of the Extraordinary in

Cappelen Damm Akademisk Idea Work: Lessons of the Extraordinary in

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisWhat does it take to find oil in an area where many have tried, but failed? What does it take to design buildings that become prize-winning cultural landmarks? And what can the best architects, oil explorers, business lawyers, journalists, and business developers within banking and trading analysis have in common? Idea Work can provide the answers. This book builds on a four-year research project and describes what extraordinary idea work looks like in practice. The authors take you behind the scenes of some of Norway''s leading companies and show how surprisingly similarly they work when they are working creatively to develop and realise new ideas. The book gives us, for example, a glimpse of how Snøhetta designed the Opera and the 9/11 memorial, and how explorers at Statoil discovered the most oil of all oil companies in the world in 2011. Narratives are presented on how prepping, sketches, pin-ups, drama, wonder, and punk are important aspects of the extraordinary. Examples are supported by theory, placing this book at the forefront of international research. Idea Work will appeal to practitioners as well as students. It recounts engaging stories from actual production processes and combines new theoretical perspectives with practical advice. It will also be of interest to anyone working with development, particularly with developing new ideas. From a professional standpoint, this book is an uncommon contribution to describing and understanding creativity as something collective and grounded in everyday activity.

Kult Books The Perfect Crime Concerning the Murder of

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisGermany is a crime fiction country. If wanted, fictional murder and manslaughter can be witnessed many times a day throughout the main television networks. There are more than 238 crime series available on Germany's six largest broadcasting channels. Based on the overrepresentation of fictional murder on German television, The Perfect Crime investigates the effect of crime series on our perception and behaviour. The work examines the use of imaging techniques within police work and its epistemic implications, as well as the question of how fictional narratives change our perception of reality. The work combines several photographic techniques and approaches: Staiger and Uchtmann have made photographs on the film sets of German crime series, overstaging scenes, leading to an abstraction of what is depicted contrasted with supposedly authentic imagery of corpses and crime scenes. In the portrait series various actors, who played victims and perpetrators in German crime series have been altered by artificial intelligence to create new possible versions of them, linked to the creation of phantom images in real police work. Furthermore, locations that have served as a movie set for a fictional crime scenes are documented as 3D reconstructions via photogrammetric methods, referring to the potential emergence of so-called 'fear spaces.

Book SynopsisThe artistic traditions of four major Christian denominations are examined and outlined in detail in this groundbreaking volume that presents the first synthesis of the artistic contributions of those traditions. Diane Apostolos-Cappadona has curated a volume that presents four single-authored contributions in one place, broadening the study of Christian art beyond Roman Catholic, Orthodox and ''protestant'' traditions to consider these more recent Christian approaches in close and expert detail. Rachel Epp Buller examines art in the Mennonite tradition, Mormon art is considered by Heather Belnap, Quaker contributions by Rowena Loverance and Swedenborgian art by Diane Apostolos-Cappadona. Each writer presents elements of the theology of their chosen tradition through the prism of the artists and artistic works that they have selected. Alongside mainstream artistic figures such as William Blake less known figures come to the fore and the volume features color illustrations that support and underline the theological and artistic themes presented in each section of the book. Together these studies of artistic presentations in these four traditions will be a much need means of filling a gap in the study of Christian art.

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisAn overdue introduction to one of the Americas' most eminent nineteenth-century artists, the Mexican painter José María Velasco José María Velasco (18401912) is considered the greatest Mexican landscape painter of the nineteenth century. In portraying his native country during decades of enormous societal change, he depicted its magnificent scenery, storied past, and rapid industrialisation, most famously in his monumental representations of the Valley of Mexico, the area surrounding modern Mexico City. Velasco was a true polymath, and much more than a painter of the national landscape. He was also a practising botanist, naturalist, and geologist with highly developed interests in archaeology and cartography. His curiosity about the natural world profoundly shaped his work. This book, the first monograph on Velasco to be published outside Mexico, provides a fresh appraisal of his work. Essays by scholars from the United States, Britain, and Mexico focus on his life and career, his interest in contemporary science, and his legacy for artists today.

Book SynopsisThe first publication of artist and architect Frederick Kiesler?s epoch-spanning history of human architecture, largely unknown but still relevant.Magic Architecture was the architect Frederick Kiesler?s most ambitious book project, an epoch-spanning history of human housing from prehistory to the atomic era?and yet it was never published, as Kiesler moved on to other exhibitions and projects. Kiesler?s comparative exploration of the quasi-?magical? effects of atomic technology and contemporary telekinetic military systems and the alternative epistemology of ?magic? practices associated with cave drawings and protohistoric subterranean settlements reflects his profoundly interdisciplinary perspective on the evolution of art, architecture, and design. This edition preserves Kiesler?s conception of the book as a neo-Vitruvian Renaissance treatise divided into ten parts or books that narrate an alternative history and theory of architecture. Also included are sixty composite illustrations, cut and pasted from books and popular science journals, with elaborate captions. The editors have reassembled the book?s text and illustrations from archival material, supplementing them with notes that document the evolution of the work. Introductory essays provide a chronology of Kiesler?s research and an interpretation of key themes. Appendixes offer additional textual and visual material gathered by Kiesler for the project.

    10 in stock

Book SynopsisOne of Japan''s leading architects examines notions of Japan-ness as exemplified by key events in Japanese architectural history from the seventh to the twentieth century; essays on buildings and their cultural context.Japanese architect Arata Isozaki sees buildings not as dead objects but as events that encompass the social and historical context—not to be defined forever by their everlasting materiality but as texts to be interpreted and reread continually. In Japan-ness in Architecture, he identifies what is essentially Japanese in architecture from the seventh to the twentieth century. In the opening essay, Isozaki analyzes the struggles of modern Japanese architects, including himself, to create something uniquely Japanese out of modernity. He then circles back in history to find what he calls Japan-ness in the seventh-century Ise shrine, reconstruction of the twelfth-century Todai-ji Temple, and the seventeenth-century Katsura Imperial Villa. He finds the periodic ritual relocation of Ise''s precincts a counter to the West''s concept of architectural permanence, and the repetition of the ritual an alternative to modernity''s anxious quest for origins. He traces the constructive power of the Todai-ji Temple to the vision of the director of its reconstruction, the monk Chogen, whose imaginative power he sees as corresponding to the revolutionary turmoil of the times. The Katsura Imperial Villa, with its chimerical spaces, achieved its own Japan-ness as it reinvented the traditional shoin style. And yet, writes Isozaki, what others consider to be the Japanese aesthetic is often the opposite of that essential Japan-ness born in moments of historic self-definition; the purified stylization—what Isozaki calls Japanesquization—lacks the energy of cultural transformation and reflects an island retrenchment in response to the pressure of other cultures.Combining historical survey, critical analysis, theoretical reflection, and autobiographical account, these essays, written over a period of twenty years, demonstrate Isozaki''s standing as one of the world''s leading architects and preeminent architectural thinkers.

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisPolemics and reflections on how to bridge the gap between what architecture actually is and what architects want it to be.Architecture depends?on what? On people, time, politics, ethics, mess: the real world. Architecture, Jeremy Till argues with conviction in this engaging, sometimes pugnacious book, cannot help itself; it is dependent for its very existence on things outside itself. Despite the claims of autonomy, purity, and control that architects like to make about their practice, architecture is buffeted by uncertainty and contingency. Circumstances invariably intervene to upset the architect''s best-laid plans?at every stage in the process, from design through construction to occupancy. Architects, however, tend to deny this, fearing contingency and preferring to pursue perfection. With Architecture Depends, architect and critic Jeremy Till offers a proposal for rescuing architects from themselves: a way to bridge the gap between what architecture actually is and what architects want it to be. Mixing anecdote, design, social theory, and personal experience, Till''s writing is always accessible, moving freely between high and low registers, much like his suggestions for architecture itself.

    5 in stock

Book SynopsisLearning from Las Vegas created a healthy controversy on its appearance in 1972, calling for architects to be more receptive to the tastes and values of common people and less immodest in their erections of heroic, self-aggrandizing monuments. This revision includes the full texts of Part I of the original, on the Las Vegas strip, and Part II, Ugly and Ordinary Architecture, or the Decorated Shed, a generalization from the findings of the first part on symbolism in architecture and the iconography of urban sprawl. (The final part of the first edition, on the architectural work of the firm Venturi and Rauch, is not included in the revision.) The new paperback edition has a smaller format, fewer pictures, and a considerably lower price than the original. There are an added preface by Scott Brown and a bibliography of writings by the members of Venturi and Rauch and about the firm's work.
