Book SynopsisThe Peanuts gang offer their wisdom on happiness in this beautifully produced gift book for all generations. For the beguiling Peanuts gang, happiness is many things - a warm blanket, a snowy day, a full supper dish, but most of all happiness is being one of the gang. The millions of faithful Charles Schulz fans and those who fondly remember our best-loved beagle and his friends will cherish this latest title in our Peanuts Guide to Life series.Trade ReviewIt's impossible to think of another popular art form that reaches across generations the way the daily comic strip does . . . at the pinnacle of that long tradition, there was Charles Schulz * * Seattle Times * *Charles Schulz was an American treasure - an artist, philosopher, and keen observer of human life -- BILL CLINTONThe world of Peanuts is a microcosm, a little human comedy for the innocent reader and for the sophisticated -- UMBERTO ECOI became obsessed by it. The obvious thing is the wit, and the irony, but there's also a sort of spiritual simplicity in Woodstock and Snoopy, silent clowns who have the deepest thoughts about the human conundrum. And the set-up of the boy who always underachieves and his dog who's brilliant at everything - it's hilarious. We all went to school with a Lucy, or a Linus, or a Pigpen -- JUDE LAW * * Daily Telegraph * *Charles Schulz was, plain and simple, a great artist and philosopher . . . • Julia Watson. Lo—TEK. Design by Radical

Taschen GmbH Julia Watson. Lo—TEK. Design by Radical

    7 in stock

Book SynopsisThree hundred years ago, intellectuals of the European Enlightenment constructed a mythology of technology. Influenced by a confluence of humanism, colonialism, and racism, this mythology ignored local wisdom and indigenous innovation, deeming it primitive. Today, we have slowly come to realize that the legacy of this mythology is haunting us. Designers understand the urgency of reducing humanity’s negative environmental impact, yet perpetuate the same mythology of technology that relies on exploiting nature. Responding to climate change by building hard infrastructures and favoring high-tech homogenous design, we are ignoring millennia-old knowledge of how to live in symbiosis with nature. Without implementing soft systems that use biodiversity as a building block, designs remain inherently unsustainable.Lo—TEK, derived from Traditional Ecological Knowledge, is a cumulative body of multigenerational knowledge, practices, and beliefs, countering the idea that indigenous innovation is primitive and exists isolated from technology. It is sophisticated and designed to sustainably work with complex ecosystems. With a foreword by anthropologist Wade Davis and four chapters spanning Mountains, Forests, Deserts, and Wetlands, this book explores thousands of years of human wisdom and ingenuity from 18 countries including Peru, the Philippines, Tanzania, Kenya, Iran, Iraq, India, and Indonesia. We rediscover an ancient mythology in a contemporary context, radicalizing the spirit of human nature. The tactile reading experience of Lo—TEK reflects the ingenuity of carefully selected projects with sophisticated design details: copper highlights the value of ancient knowledge, a cardboard hardcover echoes rawness, and the Swiss binding showcases an open spine and reveals the construction of the book, just as the book discloses hidden technological knowledge.Trade Review“If we can transform our relationship with the planet, we might actually get somewhere – and Lo—TEK provides 400 pages of inspiration.” * Vogue *“A beautiful work combining a little hard science and a lot of romanticism.” * The World of Interiors *“Can ancient fixes save our crisis-torn world?… [Lo—TEK. Design by Radical Indigenism] is the result of a decade of travelling to some of the most remote regions on the planet, interviewing anthropologists, scientists and tribe members. [Watson] carefully documented their indigenous innovations using the landscape architect’s language of plans, cross-sections and exploded isometric diagrams to explain clearly how they work.” * The Guardian *“Examples of centuries-old design that combat climate change.” * architecturaldigest.com *“Lo—TEK: Design by Radical Indigenism provides a blueprint for sustainable architecture in the 21st century.” * Harvard University Graduate School of Design *“We rediscover an ancient mythology in a contemporary context, radicalizing the spirit of human nature.” * independent.co.uk *“The result of more than 20 years of travelling to research the original smart settlements, through an architect’s lens.” * theguardian.com *

Let me go to bed when the sun comes up. I don''t want life to sharpen me.''Why make art? Faced with a capitalist system that has turned art into artwork and creative expression into cut-throat competition, why do so many artists try anyway? In this eye-opening journey through the bizarre world of contemporary art, criticism duo The White Pube tell the story of art like never before. Poor Artists follows aspiring artist Quest Talukdar through childhood obsessions, art school lessons and her professional debut. In surreal encounters with other artists, Quest learns profound truths about money and power, and must decide whether she cares more about success or staying true to herself.Blending imaginative storytelling with dialogue from anonymized interviews with real people in the art world who have all had to wrestle with the same decisions including a Turner Prize winner or two, a few ghosts, a Venice Biennale fraudster and a communist messiah Poor Artists is a powerful testimony to the emotional, existential and financial experience of artists today.

Helene Lesger Books Al Astar: Slipcase Set (Arabic Edition)

    20 in stock

Book SynopsisThe Mosque in Mecca, arranged around the central Ka’ba, is the holiest site in Islam. Mecca is the birthplace of the Prophet Mohammed. The Ka’ba was constructed on a site of a temple from a pre-Islamic period. The city of Mecca has grown over the centuries like its counterpart, Madinah, where the Prophet died in the seventh century. Mecca now accommodates as many as tens of thousands of pilgrims in a single day. The site is the point of pilgrimage to which pilgrims travel from across the world in the annual Hajj, a key point in Islamic spiritual life. The Ka’ba is a symbol of unity, a structure of the greatest geometrical simplicity containing a single door. It is, however, considered to be feminine in gender and is draped in a covering of black cloth known as Al Astar to protect its modesty. This cloth, woven with gold, is replaced every year with a special ceremony. On this one day, the Ka’ba is left exposed and unveiled. Adel Alquraishi, a Saudi photographer from Riyadh, had established his reputation with the authorities of the Great Mosque in Mecca with his work on the Guardians of the Mosque in Madinah, published in 2020 as The Guardians. In parallel with that great book, the authorities of the Great Mosque in Mecca have enabled Adel Alquraishi to photograph the Ka’ba, the epicentre of Islam, in its undraped state.

Book SynopsisTrade Review“In Women Holding Things, artist Kalman—an uncommon philosopher of the quietly magnificent in the mundane—celebrates all the things we hold. […] The tender, infinitely expressive paintings are captioned with spare words that lend each vignette an extra air of human fragility and resilience.” — Maria Popova, The Marginalian “The prospect of reading and looking at Kalman’s work gets my heart moving like a squirmy animal. This is not a hyperbole. The excitement, I think, is in how she is able to locate the elusive sweet spot of poignant and funny, along with the often-dark complexities behind these emotions. I feel like I will learn something new about people, myself.” — Literary Hub “When [Maira] Kalman looked at her archives, she noticed that she had a large collection of photographs of women holding things. […] The project that germinated […] “Women Holding Things,” gathers dozens of new images and some previously unpublished ones.” — New Yorker "Kalman’s images encompass both everyday pleasures and incomprehensible loss, always affirming art’s sustaining grace." — Roberta Smith, co-chief art critic of the New York Times “I love Maira Kalman. I love her painting, I love her perspective, I love her handwriting, and I love her books, which somehow contain all of those things and so much more. Maira is a gift to the world, and her gifts should also be your gifts. They will certainly be my gifts.” — Emma Straub, Bookstore Owner and Author “The mega-talented writer and artist Maira Kalman presents, in radiant color, Women Holding Things. Kalman’s brief texts are thoughtful, autobiographical, powerful. This life-affirming book shines a light on women’s lives and how we all hold our humanity.” — Sandee Brawarsky, Hadassah Magazine

  • Monet

    Taschen GmbH Monet

    20 in stock

Book SynopsisHailed the “Prince of the Impressionists”, Claude Monet (1840-1926) transformed expectations for the purpose of paint on canvas. Defying the precedent of centuries, Monet did not seek to render only reality, but the act of perception itself. Working “en plein air” with rapid, impetuous brush strokes, he interrogated the play of light on the hues, patterns, and contours and the way in which these visual impressions fall upon the eye. Monet's interest in this space “between the motif and the artist” encompassed too the ephemeral nature of each image we see. In his beloved water lily series, as well as in paintings of poplars, grain stacks, and the Rouen cathedral, he returned to the same motif in different seasons, different weather conditions, and at different times of the day, to explore the constant mutability of our visual environment. This book offers the essential introduction to an artist whose works simultaneously reflected upon the purpose of a picture and the passage of time, and in so doing transformed irrevocably the story of art.

Book SynopsisChinese wallpaper has been an important element of western interior decoration for three hundred years. As trade between Europe and China flourished in the seventeenth century, Europeans developed a strong taste for Chinese art and design. The stunningly beautiful wall coverings now known as `Chinese wallpaper’ were developed by Chinese painting workshops in response to western demand. In spite of their spectacular beauty, Chinese wallpapers have not been studied in any depth until relatively recently. This book provides an overview of some of the most significant Chinese wallpapers surviving in the British Isles. Sumptuously illustrated, it shows how these wallpapers became a staple ingredient of high-end interiors while always retaining a touch of the exotic.Trade ReviewOffers dizzying temptations. After even a cursory flick, it is impossible not to feel one’s curiosity piqued by surviving descriptions, for example, of the Countess of Castlemaine’s rooms at Wantead House, "finely adorned with China paper, the Figures of Men, Women, Birds, Flowers, the Liveliest I ever saw.” -- Matthew Dennison * The World of Interiors *You would be forgiven for turning to Chinese Wallpaper in Britain and Ireland for the pictures alone. Here are tantalising glimpses of private chambers, hung with geometric arrangements of Chinese prints in the mid-18th century. Luxuriate only in the images, though, and you stand to miss de Bruijn’s formidable detective work, charting the complex cross-pollination of influences between Western Europe and China. -- Hettie Judah * Art Quarterly *This is the first volume in a welcome cooperation between The National Trust and Philip Wilson Publishers which, it is planned, will lead to a wider exposure to the public of some of the valuable and unique furnishings and valuables within the properties held by the NT. As usual, Philip Wilson Publishers have excelled with their production of this book on the wallpapers within National Trust properties. Up until now, there was just a slim National Trust brochure on this neglected subject. Now we have a proper book in which the illustration is matched by the scholarship. -- Paul Harris * Chinese Art Blog *Chinese wallpaper has been an important element of western interior decoration for three hundred years. As trade between Europe and China flourished in the seventeenth century, Eurpeans developed a strong taste for Chinese art and design. The stunningly beautiful wall coverings now known as Chinese wallpaper were developed by Chinese painting workshops in response to western demand. Despite their spectacular beauty, Chinese wallpapers have not been studied by European scholars in any depth until relatively recently. Chinese Wallpaper in Britain and Ireland, by Emile de Bruijn, changes that. It provides an overview of some of the most significant surviving Chinese wallpapers in private and public ownership in the British Isles. Sumptuously illustrated, it shows how these wallpapers be-came a staple ingredient of high-end interiors. * Asian Books Blog *De Bruijn’s book is highly readable, with plenty of appropriately sized, full-page colour illustrations of these exquisite wallpapers, which serve to extend the appeal of the book beyond the academic and professional to a much wider readership. * Institute of Historic Building Conservation *Table of ContentsIntroduction: A Global Product 1. It highlights commonly overlooked details that can lead to disastorous results and shares useful tips to help you achieve the best from your kiln. It also profiles leading makers and illustrates how their use of kilns contributes to their unique and beautiful work. This book will be your handbook to successful and confident firing. -- Jessica Browne, Ceramic Review * Ceramic Review *This very prepossessing publication has to be one of the most important books to be published this year for anyone involved in or who wants to develop their interest in ceramics. It is also very timely in that it meets the new market for ceramic making and people wanting to start their own studio at whatever entry level. This book by Jo Davies starts from the premise of asking what is it you want to fire and with which effect. Not forgetting the type of clay used and where will the kiln live, that you are just about to buy. My advice is to stop immediately and buy this book and read it from cover to cover. It’s going to answer all the questions you need to know and save you a lot of money. -- Paul Bailey. • Painting Abstract Landscapes

The Crowood Press Ltd Painting Abstract Landscapes

Book SynopsisAbstract landscape painting expresses emotion while still capturing the essence of a landscape. This compelling book explores this suggestive style first developed by Turner. Using the hauntingly-beautiful paintings of Gareth Edwards, it explores the technical, historical and psychological dimensions of abstract landscape painting to help you develop your own skilful and intensely personal approach. Through this new book you can learn about how to begin an abstract landscape painting, using chance application; understand how to ‘manage accidents’ to create innovative pieces of work; discover the importance of effective composition and how this navigates the viewer’s journey; determine the importance of the ‘invisible’ elements of painting: the unspoken value of the viewer and the influence of ‘looking’. It also reveals how to utilize a convergence of linear and atmospheric perspective to help your viewer traverse the picture plane and helps you understand the importance of light, space, colour, and tone in generating evocative paintings. Finally, it encourages you to be more demanding of your surface, using textural techniques and glazing to achieve professional production values. It is a unique and exciting book into this under-documented genre.Trade ReviewAs well as the personal connection you also get the best of two worlds – top-quality writing as well as painting. This really is a stupendous book. -- Henry Malt * artbookreview *At last – at long last, you might say – along comes a serious book about abstract painting that goes further than what you might previously have dismissed as the painting-by-numbers school of instruction. This is a unique book that does its readers as well as its subject full justice. -- Henry Malt - The Artist reviewer * The Artist *

Book SynopsisIn the dusk hours of a November evening in 2020, James Crombie set out for the shore of Lough Ennell, Co. Westmeath with no goal except to find a brief reprieve from the chaos of modern life. One of Ireland?s most lauded sports photographers, Crombie had spent months each year travelling the globe, snapping glimpses of sporting glory amid roaring crowds. Once the pandemic arrived however, he found himself suspended in an unfamiliar moment of stillness, where his focus could roam beyond the pitch. When a close friend came to him in a moment of grief, the pair made for the lake. What Crombie found on the shore that evening - an undulating murmuration of starlings, dancing above the surface of the water - would change his life forever.Desperate to capture the beauty of the murmurations, and to better understand this phenomenon and the surroundings of the lake itself, Crombie began a four-year journey, travelling to lake shore for over 100 days per year. In his efforts to capture the formations of the magical birds, Crombie managed to chart the stunning natural cycles of the lake and the surrounding countryside. An incredible combination of narrative and photography, this is a book about one man?s quest to capture the beauty of an Irish natural phenomenon, and about how our local environments harbour a wealth of beauty and complexity, if only we?re able to look closely enough. The book also features an introduction by pioneering ornithologist Seán Ronayne.

Book Synopsis'Painfully honest on what it means to be a woman who puts art first, no matter what' Olivia LaingI'm not a portrait painter. If I'm anything, I have always been an autobiographer. In Self-Portrait, Celia Paul reveals a life truly lived through art. She moves effortlessly through time, in words and images, from her arrival at the Slade School of Fine Art at sixteen, through a profound and intense affair with the older and better-known artist Lucian Freud, to the practices of her present-day studio. This intimate memoir is, at its heart, about a young woman navigating the path to artistic freedom, with all the sacrifices and complications that entails.'Powerful' Zadie Smith'Engrossing' Vogue'Captivating... Mesmerising' New York Times**Shortlisted for the Slightly Foxed Best First Biography Prize **Trade ReviewCaptivating... Mesmerizing... Paul's powers of observation are keen and often ruthless. -- Jennifer Szalai * New York Times *A poetic, sometimes painfully honest memoir. -- Tim Adams * Observer *I loved the painter Celia Paul’s memoir Self-Portrait. It’s fascinating for its account of her long-term lover Lucian Freud (he emerges as the ultimate man-baby, by turns charismatic, needy and breathtakingly selfish), but it’s also painfully honest on what it means to be a woman who puts art first, no matter what. -- Olivia Laing * New Statesman *The publication of this, her first book, is of great significance... Having recently returned to writing again, she has found a new confidence, in words, in herself and in her painting... No longer wanting to remain simply a part of Freud’s story, she wanted to make him part of her story, a narrative about her life as a painter. ... Paul’s memoir therefore seems fresh, and comes as a surprise. -- Frances Spalding * Guardian, *Book of the Week* *A story of obsession and manipulation that sends our feelings on a rollercoaster... [Self-Portrait] turns into a sort of myth about the misuse of fame and the male ego, about the struggles faced by creative women, about the body in all its guises. Like a myth, it unfolds with confusions and contradictions, a terrible inevitability and many, many discomfiting truths. -- Jan Dalley * Financial Times *
