    Bloomsbury Publishing PLC Thinking through Graphic Design History

    7 in stock

    Book SynopsisGraphic design has a paradoxical relationship to history. While it claims to promote originality and innovation - ideas that emphasize the new and unique - design practice is deeply embedded in previous ideals. Too often, design students encounter the past in brief visual impressions which seduce them to imitate form rather than engage with historical contexts. Even though it has claimed to be objective and even comprehensive, graphic design history has focused largely on individual careers and Eurocentric achievements. Yet the past swells with untapped potential. Graphic design history can serve the field of today and tomorrow, but its narratives require updates. History, like design, is always changing and like design, history is driven by present-day questions. This book shows how students and practicing designers can enrich their work by thinking historically about design. With thoughtful analyses, stimulating creative prompts, inspiring case studies, and perspectives from desig

    Book SynopsisThe first monograph in over 70 years on the celebrated female protagonist of Dutch floral paintingWinner of Gold Medal in Art from the 2024 Foreword INDIES Book Awards.Winner of the ARLIS/NA 2024 George Wittenborn Memorial Book Award.At the end of the 17th century and beginning of the 18th, Rachel Ruysch was celebrated across Europe for her sumptuous floral still lifes, admired both for their artistry and for their accurate depictions of flowers, fruit and insects. Often placed on stone ledges and against dark backgrounds, her sumptuous bouquets seem to spill over with all manner of colorful flowers and plants, as bees and butterflies flit to and from their petals. Ruysch's star faded after the close of the Dutch Golden Age, but late 20th- and early 21st-century interest in women artists has returned her to the forefront of the art historical canon.Nature into Art introduces today's audiences to Ruysch's achievements while also exploring the pioneering role of women artists and scientists in the Dutch Republic in the 17th and 18th centuries. Brilliantly illustrated with detailed reproductions of Ruysch's intricate paintings, the essays touch upon Ruysch's career and her immediate legacy while also widening their scope to consider the role of botany in the early modern era and the storied tradition of botanical illustration. The catalog also includes an index of the various flora and fauna depicted within Ruysch's work, which feature both native and nonnative species.Rachel Ruysch (16641750) produced hundreds of the floral still lifes for which she is best known. She was an apprentice in the studio of Willem van Aelst and the daughter of famed scientist Frederick Ruysch, meaning she had access to a wider world of Dutch flower painters and botanists. From 1708 until 1716 she served as court painter to Johann Wilhelm, Elector Palatine.

    1 in stock

    Book SynopsisWhat is it to be a work of art? Part philosophical monograph and part memoiristic meditation, this book challenges the popular interpretation that art is an indefinable concept, instead bringing to light the properties that constitute universal meaning.Trade Review"Danto is an elegant and erudite writer, and his sentences go down smoothly."—Deborah Solomon, New York Times Book Review"Danto was and remains the high priest of pluralism, and arch-critic of the view that art has a distinctive essence."—A. C. Grayling, Financial Times". . . arguably the most inspired interpreter of the increasingly abstruse art world that emerged during the past half century. In What Art Is, Danto's freewheeling erudition and knack for unpacking complex subjects is on display."—Eric Been, Chicago Tribune (“Favorite Books of 2013”)"Danto’s writing is elegant and his insights acute."—Publishers Weekly"The conclusion [Danto] reaches . . . is elegant in its clearheaded take on an endlessly difficult question. . . . As a critical memoir . . . tracing the particulars of a gifted mind’s lasting focus, Danto’s latest is a useful addition to a long career."—Publishers Weekly"This accessible book is the culmination of the late Danto’s lifelong investigation into the concept of art. Through an inspired range of historical and contemporary examples, he explicates his institutional definition of artworks as ‘embodied meanings’ that can take on just about any shape or form. In this radical view, the properties that render something a work of art are invisible."—Constantine Sandis, THES"Elaborating important themes of Danto’s influential aesthetics, What Art Is develops them in fascinating new ways, offering luminous interpretations of past masters ranging from Michelangelo and Poussin to Duchamp and Warhol. Written in Danto’s engagingly personal voice, the book’s essays sparkle with wit, erudition, sensitivity, and a profound love of art whose power is captivatingly contagious."—Richard Shusterman, author of Thinking through the Body: Essays in Somaesthetics"This miraculously economical book summarizes many decades of reflection and provides an ideal entry into the philosophical system of the most important American-born writer who has discussed visual art."—David Carrier, author of Proust/Warhol: Analytical Philosophy of Art

The book is for designers, journalists, editors, writers and anyone concerned with presenting factual information in a clear and effective way.Data Design highlights the key qualities of good data visualisation: accuracy, simplicity, and clarity. In this spirit, Per Mollerup discusses information design with great clarity. The proposed data displays are as simple as possible, and every graphic element is there to convey meaning. Taschen GmbH The History of Graphic Design: 1890-1959: 1

    1 in stock

    Book SynopsisA Visual History of Graphic Design - A comprehensive look at hundreds of landmark projects, industry leaders profiles, and illustrated timelines for each decade. History is a complex business. Fortunes boom and bust, empires wax and wane, and change—whether social, political, or technological—has its winners, its losers, its advocates, and its enemies. Through all the turbulent passage of time, graphic design—with its vivid, neat synthesis of image and idea—has distilled the spirit of each age. This book offers a comprehensive history of graphic design from the end of the 19th century to the remains of World War II. It traces the evolution of this creative field from its beginning as poster design to its further development into advertising, corporate identity, packaging, and editorial design. Organized chronologically, the volume features over 2,500 seminal designs from all over the world, 71 of which are profiled in detail besides 61 leaders in the field, including Alphonse Mucha (chocolate advertisements), Edward Johnston (London Underground logo and typeface), El Lissitzky (constructivist graphics), Herbert Matter (photomontage travel posters from Switzerland), Saul Bass (animated opening titles), and A. M. Cassandre (art deco posters). With his sweeping knowledge of the field, author Jens Müller curates the standout designs for each year alongside a running sequence of design milestones. Meanwhile, in his introductory essay, David Jury situates graphic design from its point of origin in early printing, engraving, and lithography to striking creative developments in the 19th century. Each consecutive decade is then prefaced by a succinct overview as well as a stunning visual timeline, offering a vivid display of the variety of graphic production in each decade as well as the global landscape which it at once described and defined. As we move on from and reflect upon the 20th century, this staggering collection represents the foundations of what would influence some of the fastest changing creative fields, and a long-overdue recognition of the enormous contribution graphic design has made to economics, politics, social causes, arts, media, and the way we see the world. A second volume in preparation will cover the period from 1960 to today.Trade Review“Jens Müller ambitiously traces not only the evolution of an industry, but also the arc of our aesthetics.” * TIME *“Chronicle, treasure of pictures, source of ideas—and above all, great fun.” * spiegel.de *“Graphic design history is a cultural, political, social, and technological history. Since it is impossible to understand one without the other, this book, which looks at the legacy and heritage of graphic design, is an essential portal to our appreciation of the world’s history.” * Steven Heller *

    Out of stock

    Book SynopsisA biography by Nicole Rudick told in Saint Phalle's own words, assembled from rare and unseen materials Known best for her exuberant, often large-scale sculptural works that celebrate the abundance and complexity of female desire, imagination and creativity, Niki de Saint Phalle viewed making art as a ritual, a performance—a process connecting life to art. This unconventional, illuminated biography, told in the first person in Saint Phalle's voice and her own hand, dilates large and small moments in Saint Phalle's life which she sometimes reveals with great candor, at other times carefully unwinding her secrets. Nicole Rudick, in a kind of collaboration with the artist, has assembled a gorgeous and detailed mosaic of Saint Phalle's visual and textual works from a trove of paintings, drawings, sketches and writings, many previously unpublished or long unavailable, that trace her mistakes and successes, her passions and her radical sense of joy. Saint Phalle's invocation—her "bringing to life"—writes Rudick, "is an apt summation of the overlap of Saint Phalle’s life and art: both a bringing into existence and a bringing to bear. These are visions from the frontiers of consciousness." Born in France, Niki de Saint Phalle (1930–2002) was raised in New York and began making art at age 23, pursuing a revelatory vision informed both by the monumental works of Antonin Gaudí and the Facteur Cheval, and by aspects of her own life. In addition to her Tirs (“shooting paintings”) and Nanas and her celebrated large-scale projects—including the Stravinsky Fountain at the Centre Pompidou, Golem in Jerusalem and the Tarot Garden in Tuscany—Saint Phalle produced writing and works on paper that delve into her own biography: childhood and her break with her family, marriage to Harry Mathews, motherhood, a long collaborative relationship with Jean Tinguely, numerous health crises and her late, productive years in Southern California. Saint Phalle has most recently been the subject of retrospectives at the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, in 2015, and at MoMA P.S.1, in 2021. Nicole Rudick is a critic and an editor. Her writing on art, literature and comics has been published in the New York Review of Books, the New York Times, the New Yorker, Artforum and elsewhere. She was managing editor of the Paris Review for nearly a decade. She is the editor, most recently, of a new edition of Gary Panter’s legendary comic Jimbo: Adventures in Paradise (New York Review Comics, 2021).Trade ReviewTracking Saint Phalle’s creative, personal, and professional odyssey from childhood to old age, with an emphasis on persistent themes of feminism, abuse, and illness, the book is just as much a testament to the willful production of artistic subjectivity as it is to the manifold powers of art as an instrument of therapy, education, and activism. -- Jackson Davidow * Los Angeles Review of Books *As readers, we inhabit her consciousness—we grow and process with her...This is the greatest strength of What Is Now Known: It offers an intimate emotional portrait—an experiential biography, you might say—of Saint Phalle. -- Jillian Steinhauer * The Nation *What Is Now Known also clarifies editing as a creative act rather than a definitive one. Saint Phalle wrote nothing for this book, and yet this book is written by her. Embracing that contradiction, Rudick enables the artist to speak for herself, as herself, once again. -- Jennifer Krasinski * Bookforum *The book follows her international journey weathering the highs and lows of being an artist, woman, friend, daughter, lover, and mother. The person who emerges is open, driven, and often remarkably perceptive about who she is and why. -- Lauren Moya Ford * Hyperallergic *

    Book SynopsisSt Mark’s Church in Björkhagen, one of Stockholm’s southern districts, is one of Sigurd Lewerentz’s (1885-1975) key designs. But unlike Lewerentz’s other famous church, St Peter’s in Klippan, no book has been published to date that constitutes a fitting tribute to this masterpiece of brick brutalism. This opulent new building monograph now fills this gap. Some 300 new colour photographs and especially drawn explanatory plans, alongside essays by distinguished authorities on Lewerentz’s architecture, turn this book into a visual feast. It demonstrates the exquisitely atmospheric St Mark’s Church both as a standalone object and in the context of its surrounding urban landscape. Moreover, it picks out many details, such as the floor coverings, furnishings, lamps, banisters, the altar, and other liturgical features. The essays explore aspects of materiality and topics such as the church’s special acoustics and atmosphere in an attempt to reveal the secret of Sigurd Lewerentz’s church designs.

A beautiful, richly illustrated volume... A valuable resource for students of art and art history as well as curious general readers... The artists included represent a wide chronological and geographic range [...] the list is impressive... [with many] dynamic and unexpected juxtapositions produced by the book's alphabetical organisation... The texts on each artist are astute and thoughtful. Formal analyses are intertwined with introductions to key art-historical, social and political themes. The offers a panoramic sweep... Its diverse line-up is organised alphabetically rather than chronologically so that lesser-known artists rub shoulders with established superstars.' – Jo Applin, Reader in the History of Art at the Courtauld Institute of Art, Times Literary Supplement'The book we have been waiting for... Women artists put firmly on the map... Every now and then a book comes out that can change lives. If a survey like this had appeared when I was a student at the Slade, the struggle to make headway as a female artist would have seemed less daunting. We'd have had role models and names with which to counter the assertion that there had never been any significant women artists. And the recent explosion of female talent celebrated in this book might have happened a generation earlier. Phaidon's latest offering is a revelation... This impressive survey spans 500 years... It's incredibly hard to distill a life's work into a few hundred words, but these 23 writers do an excellent job of summarising the salient points... The burgeoning numbers of women now making and exhibiting work is reflected in this selection. Most impressive is the quality and diversity of work... This inspiring book is not just a celebration of women's creativity, it is symptomatic of a sea change... Things they are a-changing - at last. And if anyone has the temerity ever again to claim there have been no great women artists, you will be able to use this timely tome to knock the idea on its head, once and for all.' – Sarah Kent, The Arts Desk

    1 in stock

    Book SynopsisTat* is a bit of a graphic designer's curse. Walk into any design studio and you will see tat pinned to the walls or placed with loving care on top of a computer screen. Even the purist will have a secret cache hidden away somewhere. Andy Altmann began collecting tat while he was on his Foundation course, getting ready for an interview at St Martins School of Art. He'd been asked to present a sketchbook, but worried that he couldn't draw very well, he decided to start a scrapbook: "I rummaged through the drawers at home and found some football cards from the late 1960s and early '70s (plenty of Georgie Best), an instruction leaflet from an old Hoover, Christmas cracker jokes, and so on. Then I started on the magazines, cutting out images of anything that interested me. And finally I took myself off to the college library, where I photocopied things from books before reaching for the scissors and glue." It was the beginning of a significant collecting habit. So what it is that makes a piece of graphic tat interesting? Is it the 'retro' thing - a fascination with a bygone age, the primitive printing techniques, the naivety of the design, or the use of colour? All of the above, of course, but it's not quite that simple. "Occasionally people offer me something they've found that they think I might like", says Andy. "But usually they're wrong - it doesn't excite me at all. The magic is missing." To a graphic designer, most the content of this book can safely be regarded as 'bad' design. But there is some magic in each and every piece that has made Andy either pick it up off the street, trail through online links, or enter some dodgy looking shop on the other side of the world just to snap it up. Here you'll find everything from sweet wrappers to flash cards, from soap powder boxes to speedway flyers, from wrestling programmes to bus tickets. More tat than you can shake a stick at. Taken together, it represents a lifetime of gleeful hunting and gathering. * tat (noun) - anything that looks cheap, is of low quality, or in bad condition; junk, rubbish, debris, detritus, crap, shiteTrade Review"As any graphic designer will know, creative inspiration is everywhere. From storefronts, books and interiors to packaging, fashion...even 'tat'...It's this 'tat' that designer Andy Altmann is now celebrating in his new book." -- Katy Cowan, Creativeboom;
