Book SynopsisIn the world of grand touring cars, Aston Martin occupies a special place. The English firm has always distinguished itself by its restraint, by the elegance of its creations, by the discretion of its style, by a reserve rarely observed in a universe that willingly abandons itself to exuberance. This book is devoted to DB models. David Brown relaunched the brand with emblematic cars, including some models that later became legendary, like the famous DB5 of James Bond. The history of Aston Martin over the past 70 years is organised around eight main designs. They are all strongly typed; directly associated with their creators, and with the nature of the successive owners of the company. Serge Bellu, a specialist in the history of the automobile, has produced a superbly illustrated book on the history of this typically British brand.Table of Contents6 Preface 8 The DB Label 11 Aston Martin Before David Brown (1913–1947) 17 DB2: The Origins of the Myth 43 DB4, 5, 6: The Italian Firm 67 DBS: A New Era 85 Virage: A Decisive Turning Point 97 DB7: A Change of Direction 111 DB9: A Period of Rationalisation 131 DB11: A Gentle Revolution 151 DB + Z: A Eulogy to Exclusivity 170 Aston Martin Statistics: Every Model from 1940 to 2021 176 Acknowledgements

Taunton Press Inc Kaffe Fassett's Quilts in an English Village
Book SynopsisWith his unerring eye, Kaffe has succeeded in finding the perfect location for his exquisite new collection of quilts, featuring both his scintillating new fabric designs and his classics, all in his unique colour palette. This time he has chosen the medieval English village of Lavenham in Suffolk, where the 19 quilts in this book are set off against the ancient half-timbered Tudor houses. They are displayed in all their glory in a sumptuous eye-catching quilt gallery. Included in this set of new designs are many very special ones by Kaffe, and several by his long-time friend and co-designer, Liza Prior Lucy. Kaffe's Starry Night, featured on the cover, fussy cuts some of his brilliant floral fabrics in deep rich colours to great effect, setting them off by surrounding stars in his Shot Cottons. Shards translates the traditional Broken Dishes design into deliciously soft and subtle blends of pastel fabrics, shown off to perfection against the pale plaster and weathered timbers of the Lavenham houses. In a quite different vein, the boldly contrasting background stripes in black and white fabric in Blooming Columns make a dramatic contrast to the huge fussy-cut flowers appliquéd onto it. This book - the 23rd in the series - includes a range of quilts for all skill levels, from beginners to advanced. Shaded Squares is one such lovely quilt for first timers, with its cleverly shaded squares each made up from two large triangles, one plain and one striped in Kaffe's Shot Cotton and Wide Stripe fabrics. Flat shots, a practical know-how section and glossary, back up the fully illustrated, step-by-step instructions for each quilt. AUTHOR: San Francisco-born artist Kaffe Fassett is a name every quilter knows. His work has been commissioned by the British monarchy, American fashion designers, and the Royal Shakespeare Company. Search Press Ltd Painting Skies in Pastel: Creating Dramatic
Book SynopsisThis book will teach beginners and beyond the confidence and skills to create convincing, stunning skyscapes, from rich, glowing sunsets to bright clouds on a fresh, blustery day. This practical and inspiring book distils award-winning artist Sandra Orme's insights and experience into a complete course in the fundamentals of working with pastels. She explores those aspects of colour that are key to painting skies: how to retain vibrancy; how to avoid muddy colours through the use of 'bridging' colours; and how many pastels to use for the best effect. Each of the stage-by-stage projects focuses upon a particular sky effect, and each main stage is shown both before and after blending for clarity. Her 'Sky clinic', which finishes the book, offers more specialist and technical help on some of the common problems readers might encounter. Containing the all-important specifics on how to hold the pastel to make various marks, along with close-up pictures showing how the surface should look before you start to blend at each stage, this book assumes no prior knowledge – and contains information and insights of value to even the most confident artist.Trade ReviewAimed at beginners and those with some experience, Sandra Orme's Painting Skies in Pastel is a practical and inspiring book that serves a complete course in working with pastels. Each of the stage-by-stage projects focuses upon a particular sky effect, with clear images describing every step of the journey. There's plenty of general practical advice on using pastels from an artist renowned for her dramatic skyscapes – from how to hold the pastel itself to make the marks you want, to which surface to use and how to blend and layer colours. Sandra's paintings throughout are sure to inspire you. * Leisure Painter, November 2023 *It's always good when specific compositional elements and what we might call the minor media come together. It betokens a maturity of art instruction as well as a willingness of publishers to take a risk. And this was one risk certainly worth taking. Rather than being a short chapter, here skies get a whole book to themselves with everything from placid to dramatic fully covered. After the usual introduction to materials, Sandra gets to the meat of the subject with six detailed demonstrations, starting with a blue sky fronted by fluffy white clouds which have real substance due to careful use of shading. From here, we move on to the more dramatic, with a cloudburst darkening the sky and obscuring part of the foreground. Further chapters cover wind, sunset and a sunrise. This is an impressively thought-thorough work that covers a good variety of situations and builds your skills progressively. -- Henry Malt * The Artist, Issue 139 *Table of ContentsIntroduction 6 What do you need? 8 Pastels and colour 26 Painting skies 34 Blue sky, white clouds 36 Cloudburst 48 Windy Weather 60 Vivid Sunset 72 Stormy Sunset 84 Delicate Sunrise 96 The pastel sky clinic 108 Index 128

Prestel Miranda July
Book SynopsisFrom her early rarely seen Riot Grrrl-influenced fanzines and performances to a career that has produced seminal films, fiction, sculptures, public art, and even a smartphone app, Miranda July has proven adept at articulating the poignancy and humour of the human plight while also achieving enormous acclaim along the way. This chronological retrospective includes July’s performance and video projects, award- winning films, digital multimedia, and written pieces which make clear the multidimensionality of her work. The book includes photography, stills, and archival ephemera and is narrated by friends, collaborators, curators, assistants, and audience members including David Byrne, Spike Jonze, Lena Dunham, Carrie Brownstein, and Hans Ulrich Obrist, as well as July herself. This behind-the-scenes commentary reveals an intimate perspective on the process, struggles, and grit involved in forging one’s own path. What emerges is just how singular her voice is—from a movie narrated by an injured cat to a performance that builds an intentional community; from sculpture that engages the public to an interfaith charity shop in a London department store. July may be impossible to categorise, but the importance of her work and her status as an essential cultural icon with wide-ranging appeal is irrefutable.Trade Review"Titled simply Miranda July, Prestel’s excellent new “mid-career retrospective” of the artist highlights July’s enduring interest in the very darkest aspects of human existence." —Hyperallergic "If you're familiar with the award-winning author and filmmaker, this chronological survey of her idiosyncratic career will offer fascinating new insights into her cross-disciplinary work. And if you're not, well, get ready for a visually striking, celeb-filled (Carrie Brownstein! David Byrne! Spike Jonze!) introduction to one of the most interesting artists of our time." —Entertainment Weekly "It’s a fascinating, chronological hop-scotch across formative pieces and works, delving into her archive to shed light on her constantly evolving process and heartfelt themes of intimacy and connectivity, whatever the medium. The section on Love Diamond is a personal fave, and the story of her square-toed nurses shoes." —Dazed "...the trick of Miranda July is how successfully it translates the technique to the page, tracking the ping-bang-whiz of her kinetic thoughts." —Alta

Search Press Ltd Pure Watercolour Painting: Classic Techniques for
Book SynopsisLearn how to use traditional watercolour techniques to produce beautiful, contemporary paintings that are full of light, colour and life. Packed with inspirational finished paintings and step-by-step projects, this engaging book teaches you how to use watercolours in their purest form, without the addition of any other media, to create art that has a radiancy and luminosity that cannot be achieved in any other way.Trade ReviewMarch 2018 Watercolour is a magical medium when used correctly, adding sparkle and life to your paintings. Here, Peter Cronin, takes you back to basics, learning the traditions of watercolour in its purest form, allowing the radiancy of the medium to shine through. Aimed at artists of all levels, Peter shares his 25 years at teaching experience with us, including step-by-step projects, inspirational paintings and forewords by watercolour experts, David Bellamy and David Curtis. * The Leisure Painter *What a pleasure this book is. The kind that makes you want to pick up your paints and create a painting. This book helps you to master traditional watercolour skills to create watercolours with atmosphere. This course in a book gives tips on painting both indoors and out, painting from photographs, sketching, washes and a lot more. There are 5 step-by-step projects to practise your skills. This 144 page book is longer than many on the subject. It is filled with wonderful examples of watercolour. Wonderful book. * www.Yarnsandfabrics.co.uk *February 2018 This beautiful celebration of the technical and creative capabilities of pure watercolour does the medium ample justice. Peter Cronin examines and demonstrates all the classic techniques - sketching, washes, wet-in-wet and drybrush - as well as the many ways of making mark. More importantly, he does this in a creative context, working towards a successful result rather than conducting exercises for their own sake. This is an inherently hands-on book; there is a strong sense of progression from techniques to outdoor work - something Peter is particularly keen on - and it would not be unreasonable to call this a masterclass, even though it remains thoroughly accessible at heart. Every page simply overflowers with useful information that is presented with admirable clarity. Peter is a master of his medium and it is a real privilege and pleasure to be able to work alongside him. * The Artist *As you might expect, Peter is a member of the Pure Watercolour Society and this is a hymn to the medium.. Forewords by David Curtis and David Bellamy should leave you in no doubt about how good it is. My first question on opening the book was: what is “pure” watercolour and how does it differ from any other kind? Peter helpfully enlightens us: “One may suspect that there is perhaps more to good painting than a huge toolkit, and it may be possible to take simple tools and use them well. This concept and approach to painting are at the heart of pure watercolour”. Put kindly, I take that to mean that simplicity is always best and that you should work with your imagination and media rather than your tools; they’re not what makes a painting, you do. In the wrong hands, this could come across as a fundamentalist rant, but Peter lets his brushes do the talking and the work here is simply extraordinary. If he wasn’t such a good explainer and demonstrator, you could easily be put off by his virtuosity. As it is, follow his advice carefully and you’ll stand a very good chance of finishing this book a much better painter then when you started. Watercolour is, as I think we all know, a very special medium. It’s one that does sometimes seem to have a mind of its own and is nowhere near as controllable as the opaque ones. The skill is to work with that and to learn ways of encouraging it to do what you want rather than trying to wrestle it into submission and merely working against it. Handle a wash sensitively, know when colours are going to bleed and blend and large sections will almost complete themselves. Peter explains much about the properties of watercolour and the techniques you’ll need. He also demonstrates extensively and these paintings will show you how to produce some really quite advanced work. It’s a bit of a tour de force. * Artbookreview.net *

Lars Muller Publishers The Formal Basis of Modern Architecture
Book SynopsisPeter Eisenman-world-famous for his Holocaust Memorial in Berlin (2005)-confronts historicism with theory and the analysis of form, whose distinguishing features he regards as the foundation of architectural composition. The architect illustrates his observations with numerous, extremely precise hand drawings. Eisenman wrote The Formal Basis of Modern Architecture, his dissertation, in 1963 at the University of Cambridge. The dissertation was first published as a facsimile edition by Lars Muller Publishers in 2006. The original content of the publication is now available again-the book is reprinted in a smaller format. "I knew what I wanted to write," Eisenman says of the dissertation. "An analytic work that related what I had learned to see, from Palladio to Terragni, from Raphael to Guido Reni, into some theoretical construct that would bear on modern architecture, but from the point of view of a certain autonomy of form." Hence the title of his research.

Getty Trust Publications Camille Claudel
Book SynopsisCamille Claudel (1864–1943) was among the most daring and visionary sculptors of the late nineteenth century. Although much attention has been paid to her tumultuous life—her affair with her mentor, Auguste Rodin; the premature end to her career; her thirty-year institutionalization in an asylum—her art remains little known outside of France. Memorably praised by critic Octave Mirbeau in 1895 as “a revolt of nature: a woman of genius,” Claudel was celebrated for her brilliance during a time when female woman sculptors were rare. Featuring more than two hundred photographs along with contributions from leading experts, this publication accompanies the first comprehensive survey of Claudel’s oeuvre in nearly forty years. With essays exploring the many facets of her life, work, and reception; a biography; commentary by American sculptor Kiki Smith; and a fascinating appendix of documents written by Claudel and her contemporaries, this volume reevaluates the artist’s work on its own merits and repositions her legacy within a more complex genealogy of modernism.Table of ContentsDirectors' Foreword - Timothy Potts and James Rondeau Acknowledgments/list of lenders Introduction Notes to the Reader An Interview with the artist Kiki Smith Camille Claudel: A Biographical Overview - Cécile Bertran Women Sculptors in Late Nineteenth-Century Paris: Artistic Education and Career - Clarisse Fava-Piz Patrons and Supporters of Camille Claudel - Anne-Lise Desmas Claudel's Critical Reception from Her Internment in 1913 until Now - Emerson Bowyer CataloguePortraits - Anne-Lise Desmas In Rodin's Studio - Clarisse Fava-Piz Sakuntala, 1886–1905 - Chloé Ariot The Waltz, 1889–1905 - Franck Joubin The Age of Maturity, 1890–1907 - Emerson Bowyer The Little Miss, 1892–98 - Chloé Pelletier Small Genre Statuary, 1895–1905 - Anne-Lise Desmas The Last Years, 1902–5 - Anne-Lise Desmas Checklist of the Exhibition Chronology

Book SynopsisIn the spring of 2023, Fondation Louis Vuitton will be holding Basquiat x Warhol... Painting 4 hands, the most important exhibition ever devoted to the collaborative work of these two artists. The exhibition will feature more than 100 jointly signed paintings, in addition to individual works by Basquiat and Warhol, and works by other major artists (Keith Haring, Jenny Holzer, Kenny Scharf, etc.) in order to recreate the New York downtown art scene of the 1980s. From 1984 to 1985, Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960–1988) and Andy Warhol (1928–1987) jointly produced about 160 paintings, some of the largest in their respective careers. A genuine artistic dialogue of style and form had developed between them that dealt equally well with crucial issues such as the integration of the African-American community into the narrative of North America, a continent where Warhol was a major manufacturer of icons.

Monacelli Press Beginning Drawing Atelier: An Instructional
Book SynopsisWritten by a well-known artist and best-selling art-instruction author with almost rock-star popularity in the contemporary world of representational art, Beginning Drawing Atelier, with its unique workbook/sketchbook approach, and high-quality paper, offers a comprehensive and contemporary twist on traditional Atelier art instruction practices. Atelier education is centered on the belief that working in a studio, not sitting in the lecture hall, is the best place to learn about art. Every artist needs to learn basic drawing skills. In this elegant and inspiring workbook, master contemporary artist and best selling author Juliette Aristides breaks down the drawing process into small, manageable lessons; presents them progressively; introduces time-tested principles and techniques in the Atelier tradition that are easily accessible; and shares the language and context necessary to understand the artistic process and create superior, well-crafted drawings. What makes this approach unique is the fact that it includes blank pages for copying and practicing within each lesson, facilitating traditional Atelier methods. Ateliers have produced the greatest artists of all time--and now that educational model is experiencing a renaissance. These studios, in a return to classical art training, are based on the nineteenth-century model of teaching artists by pairing them with a master artist over a period of years. Students begin by copying masterworks, then gradually progress to painting as their skills develop. Beginning Drawing Atelier is like having an atelier in a book - and the master is Juliette Aristides, a classically trained artist. On every page, Aristides uses the works of Old Masters and today's most respected realist artists to demonstrate and teach the principles of realist drawing and painting, taking students step by step through the learning curve yet allowing them to work at their own pace. Unique and inspiring, the approach in this new book offers serious art courses for serious art students.Trade Review"Delightfully elegant and rational, Beginning Drawing Atelier carries you through the rigors of learning how to draw, like a master, ever so gently. All five books by Juliette Aristides are treasures, but this is perhaps the most engaging and impactful in fostering visual literacy. It is a book to experience. By its last page, you will be left with a poetic sense of the world." - Milène J. Fernández, writer and contributor to theeepochtimes.com “I have met many thousands of artists over the last fifty years of painting and thirty-five years of making paint. Very rarely do I meet someone who is as good at writing as she is at her visual art. Juliette Aristides is one such person–both a terrific writer and great artist.” - Robert Gamblin, founder of Gamblin Artist Colors “There are few who know about classical painting like Juliette Aristides. The book is the next best thing to studying with her in person.” - B. Eric Rhoads, publisher of Fine Art Connoisseur and PleinAir magazines "Juliette Aristides, a leader in the revival of classical realism, outlines ways anyone can learn to draw - and why it's imperative for today's society.” - John Burger, writer and reporter.
