Canbury Press Who is John Blanke
Book SynopsisThe book of the groundbreaking art exhibition, displayed in the British Library, Met New York and Walker in Liverpool John Blanke is the first person of African descent in British history for whom we have both an image and a record. He was a Black trumpeter to the courts of Henry VII and Henry VIII. Yet, despite the wealth of Tudor archives, we have just two images of John Blanke in the Great Tournament Roll of Westminster and court records of him receiving wages and petitioning for a wage increase and gifts Inspired by this enigmatic figure, Michael Ohajuru invited over 100 artists and historians to imagine John Blanke’s world. Now these images and words - exhibited in the British Museum and the Met in New York, but never displayed on the internet - have been curated in a sumptuous, large art book. From its startling black and white pages leap out the diverse perspectives of the artists, who with contrasting styles, portray John Blanke variously, among many things, as a trumpeter, a saxophonist, a focused jazz musician, and a stylish trump card. By turns dazzling and intriguing, these different artistic renditions - along with rap music, poems and prose from historians - create a dazzling permanent embodiment of a noteworthy figure currently marginalised in British history.

Book SynopsisCedric Morris (1889–1982) and Arthur Lett-Haines (known as Lett) (1894–1978) were an extraordinary couple who were at the centre of the Modern British art scene and were hugely influential across the spheres of gardening and cookery as well as art. After studying in Paris in the 1920s, they moved to London, where they gave fabulous parties attended by the cream of creative London. Morris became a sought-after painter of flowers, birds and landscapes, while Lett was hailed as Britain’s first Surrealist. Together they founded the East Anglian School of Painting and Drawing at Benton End in Suffolk, attended by Lucian Freud and Maggi Hambling, where the atmosphere was described as “robust and coarse, exquisite and sensitive all at once, also faintly dangerous”. Lett ran the school and was a superb cook who swapped recipes with Elizabeth David. Cedric Morris became an award-winning plantsman and poppy and iris breeder. He was an acknowledged influence on many gardeners, including Beth Chatto. This biography, revised and updated in this paperback edition, is a fascinating portrait of a unique couple who were hugely influential across the spheres of gardening and cookery as well as art.Trade Review"A fascinating and very British story mixing minor aristocracy and delicious homosexual high jinks, grand country houses and Avant Garde intrigue. The author’s prose flows easily and free of pretension tickling one pink with his sprightly tone." -- Adrian Dannatt * The Art Newspaper *"This book will get me through winter - it's a lesson in how to live and garden with passion and no particular rules but lots of colour and flavour and the savour of food, drink, flowers and oil paint." -- Isabel Bannerman * Telegraph, Best Gardening Books *"The first in-depth picture of Morris's long life." * Telegraph *"A valuable introduction to his subjects’ lives and works, with particularly good chapters on the garden and the food at Benton End." -- Peter Parker * Spectator *"Provides a compelling window onto the British avant-garde and its relationship with similar movements elsewhere in Europe." -- Tim Richardson * Literary Review *"Enjoyably revealing." * Gardens Illustrated *"St Clair paints captivating and delightful portraits of the greatest flower painter of the 20th century and his partner, giving them their rightful place in British art." -- Philip Mould"A well-researched and fascinating read." * House & Garden *

Saraband / Contraband Dark Skies
Book SynopsisThe darkness of the night represents something unknowable even frightening to many. But when we really look up and into it, we can find celestial light shows, whole ecosystems, and, perhaps, a new perspective. The night sky offers something essential a connection to something bigger than ourselves that can, in turn, help us understand ourselves and each other better. Humans have recognised and tried to make sense of this feeling since ancient times. For so many from physicists and astronauts to astrologists and artists - the night sky has been a source of inspiration, wonder and exploration. But now our relationship to dark skies is changing as our access to them is depleted. Light pollution all over Earth can be seen from space, altering the landscape and outlining the coasts. And if we look from Earth into space, we can see artificial light there, too. In this short volume, Anna Levin looks at how we can learn from and nurture our relationship with the night sky even and especia

Columbia Books on Architecture and the City Superpowers of Scale
Book SynopsisThe objects of architecture are not simply inert assemblies of material—they are complex entities that unfold their potential agencies (whether political, social, or environmental) in equally complex ways. Exploring these forms of architectural agency has in recent years been a central aspect of the work of Andrés Jaque and the Office for Political Innovation, who, in addition to their built works, pursue a research practice through the many other media of architectural production. Their projects are reactive, intervening on what already exists to demonstrate how design, politics, and criticality operate across different scales and at the intersection of multiple realities. Jaque’s performances, videos, and installations—and this book, which collects a range of recent research projects—bring new subjects into the fold of architecture, focusing on alternative actors, distributions of power and representation, and the sociocultural effects of architecture. These episodes address ideas like genetic manipulation, the necessary requeering of dequeered spaces of online interaction, and the selling of modern architectural comforts in order to subvert the field from within and to contest capitalism's flattening-out of public life.Rather than propose alternative-from-scratch futuristic or idealized realities, Jaque and the Office for Political Innovation claim that reality is produced at the intersection of things like porn, interior design, maintenance, and the territorial distribution of toxicity. Documenting a series of performances, research projects, installations, films, characters, and exhibitions, Superpowers of Scale demonstrates the breadth of architectural knowledge and its possible representations.

Gregory R Miller & Company Suh Seung-Won
Book SynopsisKey works from the 50-year career of the great Dansaekhwa abstractionist One of the early members of the Dansaekhwa art movement, Suh Seung-Won (born 1941) set the foundations for modernism in Korea. For over 50 years, Seung-Won's delicate monochrome paintings have explored the concept of "simultaneity," using geometric patterns to delineate his aesthetic understanding of time and space. This lavishly illustrated monograph collects selected works from throughout the artist's career, presented here alongside historical photographs from the artist's life and earliest exhibitions. Major new texts from critic Barry Schwabsky and art historian Sohl Lee track the development of Suh's revolutionary aesthetic since the 1960s and its parallels in the development of the artworld and Korean culture during that time. Suh Seung-Won is an essential look at one of the most vital artists of Korea's modernist movement and the subtly powerful monochrome abstractions that have defined his legacy.

Distributed Art Pub Adrienne Salinger Teenagers in Their Bedrooms
Book SynopsisThe new edition of Salinger's ever-relevant series of 1980s and '90s teenagers in their bedroomsBedrooms contain the past, the present and the future; they are sites of continual transformation. Popular culture and fashion continually change and recycle. While specific objects of decor change over time, teenagers'' bedrooms are still private sanctuaries: spaces for safely experimenting during a time in life when one is forming and expressing ever-evolving identities.Upon its release in 1995, Adrienne Salinger's book In My Room was an immediate success, selling nearly 24,000 copies in its first few years. The continued popularity of this work made in the '80s and '90s is curious. However, over the nearly 30 years since, and especially in the most recent decade of social media, the work''s appeal has grown tremendously. In some cases, the work evokes nostalgia, but not primarily so. Adrienne Salinger hears from current teenagers often; many send her pictures of their bedrooms today. Social media encourages users to endlessly rebrand their identities, creating idealized fantasies, striving for perfection. These photographs are not about perfection. They give voice to the contradictions of our identities.Hundreds of print and online articles, interviews and features on In My Room have been published and the work has been exhibited at museums all around the world. Long out of print and now considered a classic, with only a rare few available on the secondary market, the book returns in a new expanded edition as Teenagers in Their Bedrooms. With 26 additional photographs, this treasure is made available once more to new audiences.Adrienne Salinger has published three photobooks: In My Room (1995), Living Solo (1999) and Middle Aged Men (2007). She is Regents Professor Emerita at the University of New Mexico.

Karma Tabboo!: Cityscapes: 1992–2022
Book SynopsisThree decades of luminous cityscapes from downtown New York’s legendary painter-performer Multidisciplinary performer, designer and artist Tabboo! (born 1959) rose to prominence during the 1980s through New York City’s underground drag scene. When Tabboo! first moved to the city at age 23, he fell in love with the electrifying, scrappy downtown environment and began to paint cityscapes for the backdrops in his drag performances. Forty years later, the city has altered drastically but the artist’s ardor remains (he even lives in the same apartment in Alphabet City). The sweeping cityscapes gathered in this volume are reminiscent of Tabboo!’s early backdrops. Dramatic color fields render the city in moments of transition, from day into night and back again. Gleaming windows are sprinkled with glitter, scattering the sun’s brilliance as it sets. An indelible energy soaks these cityscapes, many of which depict the view from Tabboo!’s apartment window.
