British Museum Press Hiroshige
Book SynopsisHiroshige was one of Japan's most talented, prolific and popular artists. Famed for his landscapes, he was also a great observer of nature with a visionary approach to colour and brushwork. His legacy continues to influence and inspire artists today. Over a career spanning four decades, the prolific Utagawa Hiroshige (17971858) produced thousands of landscape and nature prints, hundreds of paintings commissioned by the samurai elite, as well as many illustrated books. His work appealed to every stratum of society. While some of his landscape prints, such as Evening Snow Kanbara and Ohashi Evening Rain, are well-known examples of Japanese art, the full range of his output is less familiar. Hiroshige came from a samurai family, but he crossed social boundaries and devoted himself to depicting popular customs and the world around him. His work is distinguished by an air of gentle grace and decorum, perhaps arising partly from his steady temperament. His calm artistic vision sustained

Bloomsbury Publishing PLC Skateboarding and the City
Book SynopsisSkateboarding is both a sport and a way of life. Creative, physical, graphic, urban and controversial, it is full of contradictions a billion-dollar global industry which still retains its vibrant, counter-cultural heart. Skateboarding and the City presents the only complete history of the sport, exploring the story of skate culture from the surf-beaches of 60s California to the latest developments in street-skating today. Written by a life-long skater who also happens to be an architectural historian, and packed through with full-colour images of skaters, boards, moves, graphics, and film-stills this passionate, readable and rigorously-researched book explores the history of skateboarding and reveals a vivid understanding of how skateboarders, through their actions, experience the city and its architecture in a unique way.Trade ReviewThe book is superbly researched, colorfully and beautifully illustrated, and thoroughly analyzes the topic. It has the physical appearance of an elegant coffee-table book combined with outstanding scholarship, effectively employing theory and empirical data, particularly the oral and written testimony of participants. * CHOICE *There's absolutely no way I can do the work justice here – the book is incredibly thought-provoking, especially from the perspective of actually being a skateboarder. Book SynopsisDefinitely for adults only! The photographs in this volume were all taken without commercial interest or intent of any kind; without paying attention to taboos or respecting what is forbidden. They are real photos, entire stories that have no need for long words. And even though it could hardly be called a pillow book, you do risk having sleepless nights after having enjoyed it. I have tried to capture the frank and sweaty atmosphere surrounding teenagers, their charged awareness, as this is what I repeatedly found on my many travels. It was a personal quest that led me far away from my real work. We see young adults (all at least 18 years of age), who become professional models for a day. French and Czech women, Ukrainians, Hungarians and even American women initiate us into the intimacies of their youth, with not too much posing, but occasionally enhanced with accessories of their choice.

Search Press Ltd Plein Air Painting with Oils: A Practical &
Book SynopsisArtists who wish to explore the world of painting with oils en plein air will love the freshness and vibrancy of the work in this book – as well as the expert, down-to-earth advice of its author. Award-winning artist Haidee-Jo explores the appeal of working outside with oils and the enormous benefits it can bring in terms of personal well-being. She also shares her techniques to allow the reader to invest their oil artwork with light, motion and life. With dozens of Haidee-Jo's artworks to provide inspiration to the reader, and clear, step-by-step demonstrations throughout, this book provides both an expert guide to the challenges, opportunities and fun of painting outdoors; and provides an insight into the working methods of this dynamic artist.Trade ReviewA super, no nonsense guide, Haidee-Jo deals with all aspects of starting out with plein air painting. The book is beautifully and liberally illustrated. The whole process, from choosing the correct equipment and paints to finding inspiration and coping with every weather condition is covered with practical advice. Exercises and examples are used throughout, based on the artists own experience and work. She even discusses the main barrier that may prevent some people engaging in plein air painting, i.e. painting in public and there is a chapter dealing with options for works which for whatever reason haven’t made the grade. It is a comprehensive work filled with a wealth of knowledge and information and the artists’ obvious love and enthusiasm for her subject, a must for anyone wishing to take their first steps outside. -- Anne Chalkley * Amazon Customer Review *I’ve looked forward to the release of this book by my favourite plein air artist Haidee-Jo Summers and it certainly doesn’t disappoint. There is lots of inspiration for anyone wanting to give plein air painting a try. I know I have wanted to paint en plein air but being an amateur have not had the confidence. Haidee-Jo’s book certainly encourages me to give it a go. Her book provides lots of helpful and practical advice and tips on how to go about this, from what equipment you may need and how to transport this, colour palettes and colour mixing, how to compose a painting and how to simplify subjects, how to deal with changeable weather. There are demonstrations to show her painting process from quick sketches to doing tonal washes leading to final paintings. And she provides exercises for you to try to gain more confidence such as doing timed paintings against the clock in small panels to help you learn to paint faster, and painting from memory to develop your short term visual memory, all helpful for painting outside in order to get the essential details down before your subject changes! Even though this is not a hardback book it has a sturdy glossy cover and the pages are of good quality with a plentiful number of good quality photos of Haidee-Jo’s beautiful paintings to drool over and envy! She truly is the expert and advocate for plein air painting, not just of landscapes but of the everyday subjects that a lot of people would overlook, as Haidee-Jo has the knack of finding the light and shadows that bring out their beauty and creating a stunning painting. I can’t recommend this book highly enough. -- Julie Geelan * Amazon Customer Review *I should first of all say that I am not an oil painter. I paint mostly in watercolour and sometimes in gouache or casein paint. However I just love this book. It is packed full with information and her beautiful paintings, and I cannot wait to ‘get out there’ after looking at this. It is really inspiring and packed with practical advice too. Well done Haidee-Jo, this is a winner for sure! * Customer Review *This book is full of very useful information. Beautifully illustrated to inspire the artist to get out and give plein air a go. I am an experienced painter but found lots of very useful advice within the pages. * Customer Review *Everything you need to know to help you start plein air painting. Suitable for all. Haidee-Jo offers practical advice given in her easy to read style. She has condensed her years of experience into this fabulous book and given us a chance to join her on this amazing adventure. Just brilliant! -- Charlotte Davies * Amazon Customer Review *As a regular plein air painter I found the finishing “Pearls of wisdom” very relatable and written with kind humour! This book appeals across the experience range, with essential information for beginners to reinforcement for the more experienced; a visual treat clearly written with examples and exercises. -- Steven James Dunster * Amazon Customer Review *Time spent in Haidee-Jo's company is always time well spent. She is adept at voicing her thought processes and showing how the creative endeavour develops in the face of changing circumstance, light and the way the work itself progresses. This is not, therefore, a straightforward book of instruction, but rather a tour round the process of painting outdoors and dealing with both the practical and theoretical considerations it raises. A quick flick through the pages reveals a wealth of visual material - just about every one of the 176 pages is packed with illustrations. These cover all of the subjects you'd expect as well as a variety of compositions, light and weather conditions. As well as demonstrations, there are plenty of discussions of aesthetics, colour, recession and ways to set up. This should delight any oil painter and is one of the most complete and absorbing books on the subject. -- Henry Malt * The Artist *Award-winning artist and editorial consultant to The Artist magazine, Haidee-Jo Summers describes herself as hooked on plein-air painting and here she shows us why. Haidee-Jo's work is fresh and full of vibrancy. With a deceptively easy sweep of her brush, she can bring her canvas to life and her work will energise you to have a go yourself. There's plenty of clear step-by-step demonstrations to work through with Haidee-Jo at your side offering paractical advice to overcome challenges that painting outdoors in the elements can throw at you. Above all, it is the sense of well-being that painting outside can bring to you that she is so keen to share and her love of plein-air painting will surely be contagious. * Leisure Painter *Time spent with Haidee-Jo is always time well spent and feels more like a relaxed conversation with an old friend than any kind of tutorial process. If you’ve watched any of her DVDs, you’ll know that she spends time discussing not just ways of applying paint, but of reacting to scenes and conditions, explaining the way the creative process works perhaps better than anyone else. A book is a very different beast, of course, and needs to be more prescriptive than discursive. The written word doesn’t um and ah, doesn’t wave its arms about to make a point eloquently and doesn’t get distracted by a sudden gust of wind. At least, it shouldn’t, though we can all think of books that wander infuriatingly off the topic. No, I won’t be mentioning any names. For all that, what we have here is an enjoyable ramble through the ways of oil painting. And that’s not a sentence I’ve ever written in forty years. Rambling is normally associated with watercolour; oils are a much more serious business. Aren’t they? You see, that’s the thing, Haidee-Jo is a painter who happens to work in oils, not a (serious voice) Painter In Oils. The medium is very much not the message, merely (is that the right word?) the messenger, a way of communicating form, colour, composition and emotion. There, I’ve said it, I’ve used the E word, because that’s really what this book is about. The subtitle (they’re always instructive) is “a practical and inspirational guide to painting outdoors”. What you’ll get here is advice about the practicalities of working the field – equipment, preparation, adaptation – as well as how to recognise a subject and construct a scene, whether it’s landscapes, trees, flowers, buildings, water or even people. There’s consideration of light, weather, seeing, interpreting, remembering (because scenes change before your very eyes) and, of course, getting the all-important paint on the also-important canvas. This is an enjoyable book that can’t but inspire you to get outside. You probably can’t take Haidee-Jo with you, so you’ll just have to imagine her. -- Henry Malt * Artbookreview.net *This is a fascinating and thorough guide to working outdoors that feels much more like an adventure with an old friend than a course of instruction. Chapters include working with changing light, allowing for weather and even working around people. On top of this, there's plenty of advice on practice, from colour and brushwork to composition, planning, both on the ground and on the canvas, and finishing off in the studio. * SAA Catalogue *Table of ContentsForeword 6, An introduction to painting outdoors 8, Choosing a subject 12, Getting outside: equipment and supplies 18, Painting outside: The bigger picture 32, Chasing the light: alla prima 44, Step-by-step Improving your visual memory 52, Slowing down: painting over multiple sessions 62, Colour and your palette 70, Step-by-step Fog and Ruby Chard 80, Design and impact: composing your artwork 84, Step-by-step Free Range Hens at Low Bradfield 96, Step-by-step Waterfall 106, Still life en plein air 108, Step-by-step Log Pile 114, Painting in daylight 118, Step-by-step Pink Cherry Blossom Against the Sky 124, Step-by-step Beyond the Gate 132, Working with the weather 140, Painting around people 152, Exploring further: working in the studio 170, Afterword 174, Index 176

In this new edition, Blackwell's gorgeous plates bloom afresh, while two engaging essays?by Martha McDowell and Janet Stiles Tyson?vividly capture the life and times of this brave, talented woman. Almost three centuries on, this stunning volume does justice to Blackwell's great achievement in medical botany. ?Victoria Johnson, National Book Award and Pulitzer Prize finalist for American EdenA complete edition of the first herbal published by a woman artistwhich has a remarkable backstoryIn the 1730s, Elizabeth Blackwell (1699c. 1758) found herself penniless, with her ne'er-do-well husband confined to a London debtor's prison. A talented artist, she came up with a unique and ambitious moneymaking scheme: the publication of a new illustrated guide to medicinal plants, including many New World species not depicted in earlier books. Blackwell's Curious Herbal, published between 1737 and 1739, was hailed for its usefulness to doctors and apothecaries and met with considerable financial success. This magnificent volumethe first modern edition of Blackwell's herbalreproduces all 500 of her exquisite plates. Blackwell not only made the drawings, but prepared the copper plates and personally hand-coloured them. Her handwritten descriptions of the plants, which she creatively adapted (with permission) from Joseph Miller's Botanicum Officinale, retain considerable interest. This book features a previously unknown preface by Blackwell, in which she reveals her passion for art and nature, and her vision for the herbal. Two introductory texts contextualise Blackwell's achievement: the noted garden writer Marta McDowell explores the history of herbals as a genre, and the state of botanical knowledge in Blackwell's time; and the historian Janet Stiles Tyson relates the artist's rather extraordinary biography.A Curious Herbal will be essential for all lovers of botanical art, and for anyone interested in women's history and the history of science.Trade Review"That Elizabeth Blackwell’s A Curious Herbal has been reprinted in full, gives credit to its longevity as a text and set of illustrations that have stood the test of time and remain relevant and worthy of recognition to this day. Scheidegger und Spiess AG, Verlag Charlotte Perriand: Complete Works 1903-1940,
Book SynopsisCharlotte Perriand (1903-1999) is undoubtedly one of the most significant figures in 20th-century interior design. Vintage pieces of her furniture designs fetch millions in auctions. Together with Le Corbusier and Pierre Jeanneret she created a number of classics, such as the chaise-longue LC4. From the 1930s, she sought not only to change design but to initiate social change; her main goal as a designer, was to develop affordable, functional, and appealing furniture for the masses. Perriand's life and work has been widely acknowledged, but thus far there has never been a comprehensive monograph covering all aspects of her work. Charlotte Perriand: Complete Works Volume 1 is a valuable resource on this key figure of 20th-century interior design. Each of the three lavishly illustrated volumes is completed by annotations, index, and bibliography. The initial volume looks at the years of collaboration with Le Corbusier and her role as a precursor in the use of tubular steel in interior design. It also documents her work in photography and her special interest in pre-fabricated residential architecture.

The tightly packed poppies provide detail, while the elevated view displays the whole landscape. THE FINAL WORD. Columbia Books on Architecture and the City Aeropolis – Queering Air in Toxicpolluted Worlds
Book SynopsisHow do we get to know air? Aeropolis: Queering Air in Toxicpolluted Worlds offers a speculative and interdisciplinary framework to reorient common understandings of air and air pollution as matter “out there.” Aeropolis contests regimes of managing air which ultimately operate toward upholding dominant modes of world-making that are dependent on forms of exclusion and inequity. Instead, Aeropolis proposes that air is thought of as a city, to center its social, cultural, political, ecological entanglements. Drawing upon feminist technoscience and queer ecological frameworks, Aeropolis moves away from solutions toward a methodology of “designing-thinking-making” that redirects and connects our understandings of air—as designers, as citizens—with ongoing struggles for just futures. Moving through a series of design interventions, histories of air, and theoretical coordinates, Aeropolis thinks with air across its many forms—through smog and dust, bodies and breath, pollen and weeds, and from urban design to geopolitics, polluted environments to open data, parks to aerial infrastructures. It insists that we acknowledge the diversity of air and its relation to humans, non-humans, and environments, both physically and affectively. That we become sensible to air by following its unruliness—by living, breathing, seeing, holding, touching, queering airs. With contributions from María Puig de la Bellacasa and Timothy K. Choy.Trade ReviewThe airs of Aeropolis are full of political agonism and liberatory potential, and this book serves as a guide to navigating the world of the potently-affective and semi-visible. -- Jaffer Kolb * BOMB Magazine *
