  • The Male Nude

    Taschen GmbH The Male Nude

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisWhile the female nude has long played a conspicuous role in western iconography, the male nude has not always enjoyed such attention, or acceptance. This ode to the male physique celebrates the evolving, at one time illicit, art form from anonymous 19th century erotica through to contemporary work from David Hockney and Duane Michaels. Through the classic, the playful, and the provocative, it explores the compositions, postures, and role-playing of this often under-explored genre. Esteemed masters such as Herbert List, George Platt Lynes or Robert Mapplethorpe are all there, alongside Baron Wilhelm von Gloeden, famed for his homoerotic images of nude youths in classical postures in Sicily. Further highlights include illustrations from Physique Pictorial, the leading organ of the mid-50s gay scene and a pioneer in gay publishing.Trade Review“The definitive anthology of the male nude, right up to the present day.” * The Mirror *

  • The Marvel Age of Comics 1961–1978. 40th Ed.

Taschen GmbH The Marvel Age of Comics 1961–1978. 40th Ed.

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisIt was an age of mighty heroes, misunderstood monsters, and complex villains. With the publication of Fantastic Four No. 1 in November 1961, comics giant Marvel inaugurated a transformative era in pop culture. Through the next two decades, the iconic Hulk, Spider-Man, Iron Man, and the X-Men leapt, darted, and towered through its pages. Captain America was resurrected from his 1940s deep-freeze and the Avengers became the World’s Greatest Super Heroes. Daredevil, Doctor Strange, and dozens more were added to the pantheon, each with their own rogues’ gallery of malevolent counterparts. Nearly 60 years later, these thrilling characters from the 1960s and ’70s are more popular than ever, fighting the good fight in comics, toy aisles, and blockbuster movies around the world. In The Marvel Age of Comics 1961–1978, legendary writer and editor Roy Thomas takes you to the heart of this seminal segment in comic history—an age of triumphant character and narrative innovation that reinvented the super hero genre. With more than 500 images and insider insights, the book traces the birth of champions who were both epic in their powers and grounded in a world that readers recognized as close to their own; relatable heroes with the same problems, struggles, and shortcomings as everyone else. By the ’70s, we see how the House of Ideas also elevated horror, sword and sorcery, and martial arts in its stable of titanic demigods, introducing iconic characters like Man-Thing, Conan, and Shang-Chi and proving that their brand of storytelling could succeed and flourish outside of the capes and tights. Behind it all, we get to know the extraordinary Marvel architects whose names are almost as familiar as the mortals (and immortals!) they brought to life—Stan “The Man” Lee, Jack “King” Kirby, and Steve Ditko, along with a roster of greats like John Romita, John Buscema, Marie Severin, Jim Steranko, and countless others. The result is a behind-the-scenes treasure trove and a jewel for any comic fan’s library, brimming with the innovation and energy of an invincible era for Marvel and its heroes alike. © 2020 MARVELTrade Review“A fantastic book… By far the greatest representation of the history of Marvel Comics!” * Joe Sinnott, comic book artist & Marvel inker *“Marvel is pop culture in its purest form.” * dpa *“A veritable Bible... chronicling Marvel’s incredible odyssey.” * Le Figaro *

  • Bruegel. The Complete Paintings. 40th Ed.

Taschen GmbH Bruegel. The Complete Paintings. 40th Ed.

    4 in stock

Book SynopsisThe life and times of Pieter Bruegel the Elder (c. 1526/30–1569) were marked by stark cultural conflict. He witnessed religious wars, the Duke of Alba’s brutal rule as governor of the Netherlands, and the palpable effects of the Inquisition. To this day, the Flemish artist remains shrouded in mystery. We know neither where nor exactly when he was born. But while early scholarship emphasized the vernacular character of his painting and graphic work, modern research has attached greater importance to its humanistic content. Starting out as a print designer for publisher Hieronymus Cock, Bruegel produced numerous print series that were distributed throughout Europe. These depicted vices and virtues alongside jolly peasant festivals and sweeping landscape panoramas. He then increasingly turned to painting, working for the cultural elite of Antwerp and Brussels. Rather than idealizing reality, he bravely confronted the issues of his day, addressing the horrors of religious warfare and taking a critical stand against the institution of the Church. To this end, Bruegel developed his own pictorial language of dissidence, lacing innocuous everyday scenes with subliminal statements in order to escape repercussions. This book is derived from our XXL monograph, which saw TASCHEN undertake a comprehensive photographic survey of the artist’s oeuvre. The result boasts exceptional details and reproductions, unveiling Bruegel’s larger-than-life universe with unprecedented clarity. This volume, in celebration of our 40th anniversary, presents all 40 paintings, accompanied by enlarged details and accessible, immersive texts.Trade Review“Packed with superlative reproductions.” * The Times *“One of the most imaginative, original and captivating artists in history.” * The Guardian *“Like Shakespeare, Bruegel can capture the theatre of life in scenes that are comic yet full of acute psychological portraits.” * The Guardian *

  • The Little Book of Tom. Blue Collar

Taschen GmbH The Little Book of Tom. Blue Collar

    3 in stock

Book SynopsisAs a boy, Tom’s first crush was a strapping young farmhand who worked the fields around his family home. Finland is a land of tough physical men, catching fish in the icy sea; cutting logs in the endless forests; threshing oats, rye, and barley on the farms. Tom, a more sensitive boy, admired these rough men and their distinctive clothing, designed for protection and utility. He later said, “When I was young, leather was worn by people who worked outside because it was warm. All the men who wore leather, they were the type of men which I adored.” When he began to draw he celebrated these early idols, improving their wardrobes with tight jeans, faded T-shirts, and thigh-high beak-toed Lappish boots. It was a young logger in this gear who appeared on the spring 1957 cover of Physique Pictorial, introducing Tom to the world. In the decades to follow Tom added truckers, repairmen, construction workers, circus roustabouts, and the American cowboy to his roster of working-class heroes. Though just sexual fantasies for him, his portrayal of blue-collar lovers helped working class gays accept their true selves. The Little Book of Tom: Blue Collar traces Tom’s fascination with working men in one compact and affordable package. A brawny lineup of multi-panel comics and single-panel drawings and paintings is set alongside archival and contextual material, including historic film stills and posters, personal photos of Tom, sketches, and Tom’s own reference photos.

  • Kay Nielsen. 1001 Nights

Taschen GmbH Kay Nielsen. 1001 Nights

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisIn the late 1910s, in a Europe ravaged by World War I, Danish illustrator Kay Nielsen put the finishing touches on his illustrations of A Thousand and One Nights. The results are considered masterpieces of early 20th-century illustration: bursting with sumptuous colors of deep blues, reds, and gold leaf, and evoking all the magic of this legendary collection of Indo-Persian and Arabic folktales, compiled between the 8th and 13th centuries. However, publishers retreated from Nielsen's project in the financially strapped postwar climate, and the publication never happened. A rising star, Nielsen moved on to other work. This world heritage classic's spectacular pen, ink, and watercolor images remained under lock and key for 40 years. Published just once in the 1970s, the illustrations were rescued from oblivion after Nielsen's death in 1957 and are now held by the UCLA Grunwald Center for the Graphic Arts at the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles, the Art Institute of Chicago, and in two private collections. This publication is a unique compilation of fine art prints and stunning illustrations reproduced directly from Nielsen's original watercolors—the only complete set of his extraordinary drawings to have survived. The book features descriptions of all of the images and three generously illustrated essays on the making of this series, the origin of Nielsen's unique imagery, and a history of the tales. In addition, it shows many unpublished or rarely seen artworks by Nielsen and intricate black-and-white drawings Nielsen created for the original publication.Trade Review“More than a century later this book is as timeless as the Scheherazade story itself.” * LUXX *

Hauser & Wirth Publishers Phyllida Barlow 50 years of drawing

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisInside Phyllida Barlow's abundant archive of drawings, from her days as an art student to her later works. Reproducing over 200 works on paper spanning 50 years, from 1963 to 2013, this publication presents a crucial part of British sculptor Phyllida Barlow's (19442023) oeuvre. Although Barlow destroyed many of her sculptures during her career, she amassed a prolific archive of drawings dating back to the 1960s, when she was a student at Chelsea College of Art in London. While these works on paper range in style, they demonstrate a consistency in color and form and in their exploration of ideas related to structures, architectural interiors and urban surroundings. In an interview with Hans Ulrich Obrist, Barlow provides insight into these drawings that were not preparations but, rather, daily exercises done before, during and after the creation of her sculptures. Originally published in 2014, this new edition includes an updated biography chronicling Barlow's final years.

Book SynopsisI have had three great love affairs in my creative life: skateboarding, graffiti and industrial design. I started skateboarding when I was twelve, graffiti at sixteen, and industrial design at nineteen. I saw them as unrelated activities or disparate visual cultures, and I somewhat myopically felt that to be truly devoted to one, I had to set aside the others. Recently I have started to reconcile my past interests, seeing the connections between them, and how they have all informed my aesthetic values. Jonathan OlivaresJonathan Olivares was born in Boston in 1981 and graduated from Pratt Institute. In 2006 he established his practice, which is based in Los Angeles and works in the fields of industrial, spatial and communication design. His designs engage a legacy of form and technology, and ask to be used rather than observed. His clients include Vitra, Knoll Moros and Kvadrat. Olivares' work has been published internationally, granted several design awards including Italy's Compasso d'Oro and is included in the permanent design collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, the Los Angeles County Art Museum, The Victoria and Albert Museum, and the Vitra Design Museum.

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisBotanical gardens represent people's centuries-old fascination with exotic plants. Werner Pawlok has photographically explored special tropical greenhouses within Europe and shows us here his most beautiful pictures in his usual colourfully expressive manner - from the Palm House in the Botanical Garden in Copenhagen, to Kew Gardens in London, and the Great Palm House at Schönbrunn. The scent of the warm earth and the breath of the plants can almost be felt when looking at the large-format and colourful pictures. Fascinating interplays of colour allow the filigree architecture of famous master builders and the impressive plants to shine in a special light. Pawlok, self-taught and intuitive photographer, captures these magical places in a fascinating way. Each photo is a work of art in itself. Interesting texts about the cultural history of greenhouses, from the simple wooden construction to the efficient glass dome, accompany this extraordinary photo book. Let yourself be inspired by Pawlok's high-end photographs and embark on a nostalgic journey. As Pawlok himself puts it: "Being allowed to enter these wonderful glass palaces and explore their green-scented, tropical interiors with my camera felt like an expedition into the heart of the 19th century." Dutch photographer Jan Vermeer took on this incomparable project after being fascinated by the beauty of two fly agaric in his own garden. Equipped with his camera, he enthusiastically set off on a mushroom hunt and was rewarded with pictures in intoxicating colours and shapes of the most extraordinary and sometimes very rare specimens. He has now compiled the most beautiful shots in his photo book Wonderland. Vermeer took all the pictures for Wonderland in his home country, the Netherlands, so the book is not only an artistic work of microphotography, but also an important document and archive of nature and the forest in its present state. In short but informative texts, the author describes the wealth of forms of his plant photographic models, their usefulness in medicine, but also the dangers posed by fungi. He explains the symbiosis between fungi and trees and devotes special attention to slime moulds. In entertaining words, Vermeer explains to his readers the challenges he faced as a nature photographer in this ambitious project. Book SynopsisThe triennial companion to Picasso's work from the collections of his immediate familyThis book presents an innovative new reading of Picasso's long artistic career. Instead of dividing his art into discrete stylistic periods, authoritative texts and lavish illustrations demonstrate the unity of his work by showing Picasso's art as a dynamic whole united by his exploration of both his past art and invention of new artistic conceptions. As Picasso said, my art must not be considered as an evolution, but rather a constantly shifting exchange of retrospection and innovation.Selected from the collection of the Museo Picasso Málaga and the Fundación Almine y Bernard Ruiz-Picasso para el Arte (FABA), more than 150 paintings, sculptures, drawings and engravings explore the creative pathways of his art. Extensive photographs of the installation demonstrate the unity of his art through unexpected juxtapositions of works from different decades. More than 30 essays explore the meaning of major individual works. Five focus chapters address specialized facets of his practice, including his responses to African sculpture, World War II and the commission to create a huge mural for UNESCO headquarters in Paris.Pablo Picasso (18811973) was one of the most renowned and protean artists of the 20th century, creating everything from paintings to ceramics and set designs. He is known for his mercurial shifts in style, characterized by titled periods, as well as his propagation of new techniques including collage. There are several museums and collections worldwide dedicated entirely to his work.

Included are installation views from McGinness' exhibitions at Deitch Projects in New York, Kohn Gallery in Los Angeles, Quint Gallery in San Diego, La Casa Encendida in Madrid, Ron Mandos Gallery in Amsterdam, Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, and the Cranbrook Art Museum in Michigan.
