Bloomsbury Publishing PLC The Politics of Aesthetics
Book SynopsisThe Politics of Aesthetics rethinks the relationship between art and politics, reclaiming "aesthetics" from the narrow confines it is often reduced to. Jacques Rancière reveals its intrinsic link to politics by analysing what they both have in common: the delimitation of the visible and the invisible, the audible and the inaudible, the thinkable and the unthinkable, the possible and the impossible. Presented as a set of inter-linked interviews, The Politics of Aesthetics provides the most comprehensive introduction to Rancière's work to date, ranging across the history of art and politics from the Greek polis to the aesthetic revolution of the modern age. Available now in the Bloomsbury Revelations series 10 years after its original publication, The Politics of Aesthetics includes an afterword by Slavoj Zizek, an interview for the English edition, a glossary of technical terms and an extensive bibliography.Trade Review"Jacques Rancière is one of the most important and original contemporary French philosophers. This book provides perhaps the best available introduction to his thought in English. Its main contents are two interviews with Rancière...they provide an extraordinarily concise and systematic summary by Rancière of the main themes of his recent work across its whole range. Rancière's project is promising. It is illuminating to see aesthetics as political and politics in aesthetic terms, as a form of the 'distribution of the sensible.'" -Culture Machine -- Culture Machine"[A]n excellent introduction to Jacques Rancière...Slavoj Žižek writes in his afterword: 'Rancière's thought is today more actual than ever: in our time of the disorientation of the left, his writings offer one of the few consistent conceptualizations of how we are to continue to exist.'" - London Review of Books, August 3, 2006 -- London Review of Books'Ranciere has insightful and novel things to say about the problems that beset our understanding of modernity as it applies to art.' * Modern Painters, March 2005 *'Locating the political significance of art has not only gone out of fashion, it has in recent years become a source of embarrassment. No one has argued against this repression with more precision, nuance, and undeniable force than Jacques Ranciere ... This book, with an emphatic "Afterword" by Zizek, provides a riveting and compelling outline of the central elements of Ranciere's politics of aesthetics and its relation to his demanding rethinking of the political.' -- J.M. Bernstein, New School for Social Research'A benchmark, this compact book shows why Ranciere is one of the most compelling thinkers and writers in France since Michel Foucault and Gilles Deleuze.' -- Tom Conley, Harvard University, USA'This is possibly the most important essay, despite its length, since Adorno's Aesthetic Theory.' -- Adrian Rifkin, Professor of Visual Culture, Middlesex University, UK'A tour de force! Through a revitalisation of the term 'aesthetics', Ranciere is able to raise novel questions concerning the nature of history, the sense of our modernity, the relationship between work and art and between science and art, and the peculiarity of aesthetic experience (showing, in essence, that it cannot be contained but informs all our forms of life and activities).' -- Keith Ansell Pearson, Professor of Philosophy, Warwick University, UK'The readership for Ranciere's work is highly interdisciplinary. Le Partage du sensible would be obligatory reading in graduate courses in Philosophy, Aesthetics, Political Science, French Studies, Literature, and Cultural Studies, where it would be read in the context of other major thinkers of politics and aesthetics such as Walter Benjamin, Jean-Paul Sartre, Roland Barthes, Jacques Derrida, Etienne Balibar, Michel Foucault, Paul Ricoeur, Jurgen Habermas, Jean-Francois Lyotard, and Slavoj Zizek.' -- Kristin Ross, Professor of Comparative Literature, New York University, USATable of ContentsTranslator's preface: The Reconfiguration of Meaning Translator's Introduction: Jacques Ranciere's Politics of Perception \ The Politics of Aesthetics \ Foreword \ The Distribution of the Sensible: Politics and Aesthetics Artistic Regimes and the Shortcomings of the Notion of Modernity \ Mechanical Arts and the Promotion of the Anonymous \ Is History a Form of Fiction? As well as beautiful designs, it has great guides for choosing your stones, selecting tools and materials, painting techniques, and creating your own designs. Perfect for beginners, but still plenty to offer those with experience. -- Elizabeth Staunton Acheson * Customer Review *This book it a work of art! I loved looking through the different designs. The colours and art work are truly fantastic. It made me very inspired to try it myself, which I did! It was lots of fun trying some of the suggested ideas and teqniques from the many wonderful ones shown and explained in the book. The author goes into great detail into the designs and teqniques she has used which make it easy to follow. I only had basic acrylic paints and brushes and I produced a few designs I didn't think I'd be capable of, I even had my children involved. My 11 year old daughter found it very interesting and took time to study the book to get some ideas of what she wanted to paint. Fantastic book for any craft lover to have on their book shelf to look through over and over again as I will do! -- Kelly Raven * Customer Review *This is a beautiful book. It went into much greater detail than I expected from a book about painting stones. The book starts with a detailed history and explanation of mandalas and then talks you through tools materials and patterns. Each design has clear easy to follow step by step instructions. Projects are ranked by skill level so this book would suit a complete beginner to someone more experienced. I am already gathering supplies to begin creating my own mandala stones. The book would make a lovey gift as would the finished stones. -- Sarah Gage * Customer Review *This is a beautiful book. Given that I live near a beach this is something I've often fancied trying but didn't know where to start and the finished products make lovely gifts or decoration for the garden. Mandala Stones book is an item I think would make a perfect gift for anyone looking to take up a new hobby or who is interested in arts and crafts, it's even great for children (although some of the designs would need some practice for younger children). I've no doubt I'll be spending many a summer with my son looking for the perfect stones to paint. -- Hazel Christopher * Customer Review *lovely inspirational book. with great designs. easy to understand instructions. patterns that could be adapted to be created out of other crafting material. love this book. -- Tina Youell * Customer Review *Very informative with a wide range of patterns and colours used. -- @iamjustme2017 * Customer Review *Autumn 2017, Issue 3 What a great book! It's full of colour and a nice fairly big format. Basically find your stone (larger than a pebble would be great), ask permission (check the local regulations and check with the stone!) then paint a simple but beautiful design on it and place it on display, or on your altar. You are given guidance on all the materials and tools required: the author then gives us 50 designs with plans on how to approach creating them. For example there's a Lightburst and Fibonacci Glow - they're not as intricate as buddist mandalas but they are all basically circular and very pleasing on the eye. * Cynus Review *

Search Press Ltd Colour Demystified: A Complete Guide to Mixing
Book SynopsisColour Demystified will banish the all-too-common confusion over the watercolour palette and give painters the confidence to experiment with colour mixing. This book demystifies colour, and helps artists understand how colour works in a highly visual way through the use of colour charts accompanied by examples, practical exercises, and analyses of watercolour paintings. Numerous artworks by a variety of contemporary artists are featured in the book, covering a broad range of subjects and palettes. Topics such as granulation, iridescence, staining strength, and transparent and opaque colours are explained clearly and simply, and there is practical guidance on colour relationships, using colour to create space, and how to be more creative with colour. Armed with a clearer understanding of colour and how it looks and behaves on paper, artists will be encouraged to be more bold and creative in their use of colour in their art. Trade ReviewNon-professional artistic color education starts and stops with the color wheel, primary and secondary hues, and complementary and analogous colors. Award-winning UK watercolorist Collins (Painting Flowers with Impact in Watercolour, 2005) changes the conversation by delving into all the different ways hues, shades, and tones can play together. She explores topics like palettes, interactions, and glazing in detail with the intention of inspiring new thinking and experimentation, and furthers her cause with several different gallery-type examples, 16 worksheets that showcase techniques (painting a freehand tulip, for example), and seven step-by-step projects—still life with tulips, carte postale birds, even just one leaf. To amplify the book’s title, she includes "demystifying” sidebars, observations, and recommendations that strengthen the artistic process, such as “the look of yellow differs in the center of green and red versus orange and green.” A book with an aesthetic sensibility that more than lives up to the title. Includes a glossary. -- Barbara Jacobs * Booklist *Although this books is written to give painters the confidence to experiment with colour mixing, it can demystify colour for anyone. If you'd like to understand how colour works in a highly visual way using colour charts and examples, practical exercises and analyses of watercolour paintings, this book is for you! * Machine Knitting Monthly *An appreciation of colour is so important to any artist, and we love the way that Julie Collins shares her enthusiasm and knowledge in Colour Demystified – A Complete Guide to Mixing and Using Watercolours. In her introduction, she explains how our surroundings and the weather conditions can affect our use of colour, for example, the beautiful light that attracts so many painters to St Ives in Cornwall. She also explains how inspiring it is to spend time looking at the works of other artists, examples of which are also included in this book. In her research, for this book, Julie visited paint manufacturers Winsor & Newton to understand more about the processes and equipment behind the creation of a tube of paint, and it is this attention to detail that shines through in this book. Every page contains detailed information that is so helpful in understanding the true potential of using watercolours. As well as information about how to mix and use watercolours, there are step-by-step projects including Carte Postale Birds, Christmas Cactus, Still Life with Tulips, Trees and Birds, and wonderful examples of experimentation. Above all, this beautiful book is written by an experienced and talented artist with a passion for painting and Julie’s enthusiasm is infectious. It’s a delightful celebration of colour and a wonderful encouragement to get started creating your own paintings! Using colour charts alongside work by several contemporary artists, Julie shows how colour works and how you can used it to best advantage in your paintings. Topics covered include colour mixing, granulation, iridescence, staining, transparent and opaque colours, colour relationships and how to be more creative with colour. * Leisure Painter *This is a book which lives completely up to its title and explains not just what's happening on your palette, but on paper, in actual use. Written in language aimed at the practising artist rather than the chemist, Julie shows you what colour is, how different pigments work with each other and what all this means for finished results, for which she provides easy-to-follow demonstrations. This is an ambitious project that succeeds every step of the way. * SAA Catalogue *Understand and build the confidence to mix and use watercolours with Julie Collins's complete guide, Colour Demystified. Become more bold and creative with your use of colour in your art with the help of colour charts, examples, practical exercises and analyses of watercolour paintings. Topics such as granulation, iridescence, staining strength and transparent and opaque colours are explained clearly thanks to Julie's wealth of knowledge, and there is guidance on colour relationships, using colour to create space and how to be more creative when choosing shades – this is a must-have for any budding artist. * Crafts Beautiful *I am honestly surprised that nothing quite like this has appeared before. Yes, there have been books that deal with granulation, transparency, glazing and staining as well as guides to colour mixing, but they are either part of a larger work or hugely technical and more for the chemist than the artist. This is wonderfully straightforward and free from science. Julie examines and explains colours and palettes, what does what and how and when, but all from the point of view of obtaining a result, not as a technical exercise. Each variation is kept in a separate section, making navigation easy and there are examples and exercises that allow you to see exactly what to expect on paper. With just three brushes and three colours, a team of Search Press’s most successful authors demonstrate projects that show just how much you can do with an absolute minimum of equipment. With little to mess around with, the emphasis is on creativity and making the most of what you have. There’s no chance to over-complicate or get bogged down with an unwieldy palette or too many mixes. This bind-up is fantastically good value and covers landscapes, seascapes and flowers, with more concentrated subjects such as lakes, rivers, hills and mountains thrown in. Larger books such as this can be difficult to handle, but this falls and stays open nicely and is a pleasure to use. -- Henry Malt * Artbookreview.net *It sometimes seems as though too many art books start with a long list of items you “have” to buy which will empty the store, and your bank account! How refreshing it is them to encounter a book like this where all you need to buy are three brushes and three tubes of watercolor paint. Interested? I certainly was! This is a new compendium volume which includes material from six earlier books in Search Press’ Take Three Colours series. If you have all or some of these titles this is not new material. I am new to this particular series so was intrigued, and soon discovered what a great way to work it is especially for beginners. Subjects covered are various types of landscape, seascapes and floral studies. Because this is a compendium of six books by five different artists not every author uses the same three colors or brushes, but there is considerable overlap if you want to try them all. Each book contains four projects and a short introduction listing what you need (not much) and showing examples of mixed colors and various useful tips. Every project consists of staged photographs with captions explaining how to progress until the painting is complete. A little is added in each stage, making it all very doable for beginners and anybody like me who is a wee bit rusty and wants to limber up a long unused artistic muscle. The finished painting is shown in whole page format so you can see it in greater detail, and there is a handy glossary of terms at the back. I can wholeheartedly recommend this book. -- Rachel A Hyde * Amazon *Table of ContentsIntroduction 6 Landscapes 8 Sunset Island 10 Winter Day 16 Woodland Path 26 Valley Farm 32 Seascapes 40 Boats with Reflections 44 Sand Dune 50 Ravenglass 58 Lighthouse 64 Estuary 70 Flowers 78 Japanese Anemone 82 Poppies 86 Pansies 92 Rose 98 Mountains 106 Alpine Scene 110 Across the Meadow 116 Lake District 122 Frosty Night 128 Lakes and Rivers 136 Derwent Water 140 Swans on the Broads 144 Bridge over the Stream 150 Brograve Windmill 158 Snow Scenes 168 Snowy Hills 170 Snowy Road 174 Streamside Tree 180 Vermont Landscape 186 Glossary 192

WIT Press Heritage Architecture Studies
Book SynopsisStudies, repairs and maintenance of heritage architecture are becoming increasingly important in modern society. The rapid growth recently experienced in many regions of the world has added a particular urgency to the need to preserve our built cultural heritage. This requires the collaboration of different parties including not only architects, engineers and scientists but also artists, socio-economic professionals and all other stakeholders to ensure the effective integration of the rehabilitated buildings within the community. Comprising specially selected papers, this book addresses a series of topics related to the historical aspects and reuse of heritage architecture, as well as technical issues on the structural integrity of different types of buildings. Restoration processes require the appropriate characterisation of materials, the modes of construction and the structural behaviour of the building. Modern computer simulation can provide accurate results demonstrating the stress state of the building and possible failure mechanisms affecting its stability. Equally important are studies related to their dynamic and earthquake behaviour, aiming to provide an assessment of the seismic vulnerability of heritage buildings. Of particular interest is the need for Heritage Building rehabilitation to conform to energy consumption reduction goals framed within climate change initiatives. It is necessary to encourage actions to improve energy efficiency, harmonised with both appropriate amounts of investment and transnational commitments to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.Table of ContentsContents Initial studies of the deformations of Val d'Aran churches; Colonial city planning in Penang with a special reference to the government buildings; Urban heritage and conservation in the historic centre of Baghdad; A methodology for the conservation of small Anatolian cities planned between 1920 and 1960; Anti-seismic presidia in the historical building of L'Aquila: the role of the wooden elements; Analysis of building systems and technological characterization of medieval shipyard; Prevention, monitoring and conservation for a smart management of the cultural heritage; Preliminary study for retrofitting of a historical wooden structure using base isolation system; Knowing to preserve: the building cognition process for the conservation of St'Anne Charterhouse, Coventry - UK; Impact of traffic vibration on the temple of Minerva Medica, Rome: preliminary study within the CO.B.RA. Scala Arts & Heritage Publishers Ltd Dangerous Women
Book SynopsisThe Old and New Testaments are full of compelling female characters: good wives and bad, courageous heroines, and deceptive - sometimes deadly - femmes fatales. Dangerous Women presents works from the rich holdings of the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art that explore different artists' responses to the women of the Bible. Paintings by Pietro da Cortona, Francesco Cairo, and Fede Galizia and others stand as a reminder of how dangerous biblical women have continued to loom large in the modern imagination. These stories in this volume show how narratives of power are constructed, interpreted, and continue to evolve over the course of time. While some women saved their people, were paragons of virtue, or repented, others were purveyors of sin, harlots, and seductresses. Even if it was through their misbehaviour, all of these women - from Mary Magdalene, to Judith and Esther, to Salome and Potiphar's Wife - shaped biblical history.Table of ContentsContents: Acknowledgements; Why Are These Women Dangerous?; The Danger of Biblical Women; Plates

Vintage Publishing The Landscape
Book Synopsis'The veteran war photographer [Don McCullin] has turned his lens to more peaceful scenes... for his latest book, The Landscape. The images carry a dramatic feel and a preference for stormy skies that reveal an intimacy with conflict and destruction.' Guardian After a career spanning sixty years, Sir Don McCullin, once a witness to conflict across the globe, has become one of the great landscape photographers of our time. McCullin’s pastoral view is far from idyllic. Though the woods and stream close to his house in Somerset have offered some respite, he has not sought out the quiet corners of rural England. He is drawn, instead, to the drama of approaching storms. He has an acute sense of how the emptiness of his immediate landscape echoes a wider tone of disquiet.McCullin is based in the geographical centre of southern England. The presence of sacred mounds, hill forts, ancient roads and the nearby monuments of the prehistoric era have shaped his sense of nationhood. But down on the Somerset Levels, he has tramped through the flooded lowlands. The imagery of his home county, ravaged by storms, inevitably projects the associations of a battlefield, or, at least, the views of one intimate with scenes of war.He is not alone in his preference for darkened clouds over clear skies. McCullin’s West Country is not far removed from the East Anglia of Constable’s Dedham Vale two centuries earlier. His knowledge of his historical predecessors places him deep in a Romantic tradition. His experience as a traveller reinforces the sense of a man on the edge of civilisation under siege. Nowhere is this more apparent than in his repeated views of the glories of Palmyra and of the destruction of this ancient Syrian city. The Landscape is the last in a long series of books published by Jonathan Cape, which encompasses the entirety of McCullin’s working life.Trade ReviewWherever they are shot, McCullin’s landscapes – handsomely reproduced on these pages – share an inky dark magnificence, and an unsettling sense of menace. * RPS Journal *[The Landscape] comes as a timely reminder of the photographer’s darkness of touch… the large-scale pictures take the reader with McCullin on a landscape journey both at home and abroad. * Outdoor Photography *The veteran war photographer [Don McCullin] has turned his lens to more peaceful scenes... for his latest book, The Landscape. The images carry a dramatic feel and a preference for stormy skies that reveal an intimacy with conflict and destruction. * Guardian *Don McCullin's spot in the pantheon of great photographers was assured decades ago, yet he still produces images that stop a dead person in their tracks. This new collection mixes recent with past work, showing how no one has ever been able to accuse McCullin of wielding a frivolous camera. * Strong Words *McCullin… succeeds in making the art of composition seem effortless on page after page. -- Roger Cox * The Scotsman *

Vintage Publishing Shenzhen: A Travelogue From China
Book SynopsisGuy Delisle's work for a French animation studio requires him to oversee production at various Asian studios on the grim frontiers of free trade. His employer puts him up for months at a time in 'cold and soulless' hotel rooms where he suffers the usual deprivations of a man very far from home. After Pyongyang, his book about the strange society that is North Korea, Delisle turned his attention to Shenzhen, the cold, urban city in Southern China that is sealed off with electric fences and armed guards from the rest of the country. The result is another brilliant graphic novel - funny, scary, utterly original and illuminating.Trade ReviewLike last year's Pyongyang, about his similar stint in North Korea, Shenzhen is a casual, dryly witty series of observations... Delisle's got an animator's eye for quirks of motion, analyzing the arc of a public fountain's water and the way street vendors make popcorn in a pressure cooker. The best artwork in the book is his impressionistic, unnarrated pen-and-ink-wash drawings of Shenzhen's drab buildings and billboards, but Delisle's keen awareness of how and why he can't connect to the city makes for a rarity: a thoroughly engaging memoir of being bored to distraction. -- Douglas Wolk * New York Times Book Review *

Verso Books Outside the Outside
Book SynopsisMatt Hern argues that the changing relationship between the urban center and the suburban periphery forces us to rethink the entire identity of the city itself. Today, most of the Western world lives on the city outskirts. Yet these neighborhoods that once offered security and respite from the perceived dangers of the city center have been radically transformed in the last few decades to poor, working-class and racialized communities. Outside the Outside maps these changes and argues for a revival of the social life of the city as a whole.Hern shows how language that relegates parts of the urban to the outside and designates other parts as the 'center' echoes colonial forms of domination. This should come as no surprise in an era when communities are forced onto the periphery and beyond by gentrification. With on-the-ground reportage in, among other places, Vancouver, Portland, London, Ferguson and Rabat, Hern demonstrates how we need to challenge our misconceptio

ACC Art Books Eye-D: Portraits by Anna Gabriel
Book Synopsis"It is thought provoking when you look at people's eyes and the things they have seen and the places they have been...there's so much to consider when looking at Anna's work." — Today Australia “To photograph an eye is to see into another world, a deeper emotional world. These photographs are like small windows into houses that we pass every day but never look inside. In a time where people are looking at screens and experiencing less eye contact with each other, I am happy to put out this book that takes a deeper look into the eyes of these famous faces.” – Anna Gabriel. It is said that the eyes are a window to the soul. They are what we first look at when we meet a stranger, and one of the most expressive parts of the human body. The eye speaks an intricate language, one that cannot be heard, only felt. The size of the pupil can signify focus or arousal. We meet each other’s eyes to show attentive interest, yet often feel discomfort when stared at: an evolutionary trait designed to alert us to a predatory gaze. This book is a testament to the power of the human eye. It gathers together Anna Gabriel’s collection of photographs, showing the close-up eyes of numerous well-known rock and film stars, including David Byrne, Helena Christensen, Willem Dafoe, The Edge, Noel Gallagher, Annie Lennox, Susan Sarandon, Benjamin Zephaniah, Peter Gabriel and many more.Trade Review"It is thought-provoking when you look at people's eyes and the things they have seen and the places they have been...there's so much to consider when looking at Anna's work." - Today Australia"They say the eyes are the windows to the soul and with that in mind, Peter Gabriel’s daughter Anna has compiled this unusual take on the traditional celebrity portrait that hones in exclusively on her subject’s peepers." - Classic Pop magazine
