Abbeville Press Inc.,U.S. Passion by Design
Book Synopsis An attractive new hardcover edition of the classic biography of Tamara de Lempicka, whose paintings defined Art Deco and whose life epitomised the Jazz Age. As F. Scott Fitzgerald portrayed the mad glories of the 1920s on the printed page, Tamara de Lempicka (1898-1980) captured them on canvas. A seductive Garbo-esque beauty with an irresistible force of personality, this refugee of the Russian Revolution successively conquered Paris, Hollywood, and New York with coruscating portraits of the world''s rich and famous. Her Art Deco paintings earned for her a life more fabulously excessive than anything Fitzgerald dreamed of. Passion by Design, authored by Tamara de Lempicka''s own daughter, is an intimate look at a fascinating personality, and remains the best account of her life and work. This new edition is illustrated with vibrant colour reproductions of her finest paintings, as well as exclusive photographs from family albums. An additional chapter by Victoria de Lempicka, the artist''s granddaughter, explores the ever-evolving legacy of Tamara de Lempicka, from the record eight-figure price fetched by her painting La Tunique Rose in November 2019 to the new musical based on her life.

Sarabande Books, Incorporated Hotel Almighty
Book SynopsisVisually arresting and utterly one-of-a-kind, Sarah J. Sloat's Hotel Almighty is a book-length erasure of pages from Misery by Stephen King, a reimagining of the novel's themes of constraint and possibility in elliptical, enigmatic poems. Here, "joy would crawl over broken glass, if that was the way." Here, sleep is a "circle whose diameter might be small," a circle "pitifully small," a "wrecked and empty hypothetical circle." Paired with Sloat's stunning mixed-media collage, each poem is a miniature canvas, a brief associative profile of the psyche—its foibles, obsessions, and delights.Trade ReviewAIGA 50 Books 50 Covers of 2020 The New York Times Book Review, “New & Noteworthy Poetry, from the Ancient Greeks to Billy Collins” Library Journal, "Versifying / Collection Development: Poetry" Academy of American Poets, “2020 Featured Fall Books” "Kenyon Review’s 2020 Holiday Reading Recommendations" Electric Literature, "9 Graphic Poetry Collections that Reimagine Text and Image" Neon Pajamas, "Favorite Authors (and Their Books) That I Read in 2020" Hypoallergic, “Typographic Eye Candy”: 50 Standout Book Covers From 2020 “Absolutely marvelous.” —Mary Ruefle "This book of erasure poems uses Stephen King’s “Misery” as its source text, highlighting themes of captivity and imagination. Sloat reproduces the original pages she used, adorned with fanciful collages on the erased sections." —”New and Noteworthy Poetry, from the Ancient Greeks to Billy Collins,” The New York Times Book Review "Sarah J. Sloat’s debut poetry collection, Hotel Almighty, is a visual feast. This assemblage of erasure poems and full-color collages is a fantastical, Rubik’s Cube of a delight." —Kelly Fordon, New York Journal of Books "Sloat’s brilliant erasures. . . are visual delights that transcend confinement." —"Kenyon Review’s 2020 Holiday Reading Recommendations," Kenyon Review "Sarah J. Sloat’s Hotel Almighty (Sarabande, Sept.) goes all out with erasure and mixed-media collage to reimagine Stephen King’s Misery." —"Versifying / Collection Development: Poetry" by Barbara Hoffert, Library Journal "Hotel Almighty is a collection full of possibility and surprise. Of yes, misery and confinement, but also of playfulness and hope. It’s worth noting how unusual and thrilling it is to encounter a book of poems infused with so much color. The sophistication of the erasure pairs with the illustrative nature of collage to create a distinct mood, at times, like a subversive picture book for the Future Adult version of the kid drawing in the back of the room, who is too smart or dark or witty for the rest of the class." —"Misery Loves Company: A Conversation with Sarah J. Sloat" by J.M. Farkas, The Rumpus "More in the spirit of play than protest, S. Jane Sloat creates poetry from prose, reconstituting the words and world of Stephen King’s Misery. Sloat finds dreamy delight in King’s suspenseful tale: ‘In an act of imagination/late at night./He threw back his head and/a variety of strange and poisonous flowers grew.’ These lines feel like they speak to the creative process in general and to this book in particular. Each page is a poem revealed through erasure, strange word-flowers growing up from crayons, collage fragments, and loose threads that suggest a feminine hand." —Electric Literature, "9 Graphic Poetry Collections that Reimagine Text and Image" "Sarah J. Sloat's visual spectacles feel like unique and refreshing dreamscapes. Where a table or desk transforms into a craft bonanza of vivid lines, vintage clippings, yarn, scissors, wallpaper, string. Hotel Almighty offers all of those things. Bring me erasure. Bring me poetry. Bring me analog collage. Bring me Misery on every damn page." —"Favorite Authors (and Their Books) That I Read in 2020," Neon Pajamas "Hotel Almighty will make your brain spin until the last page, weaving colorful paper cut-outs, vibrant dots, and gold threads with word-jewels excavated from Misery, bewildering you with a new sense of what poetry is capable of." —Rhino "At a time when many contemporary poets experiment with and teach erasure as a poetic technique, Sloat's collection showcases the many potentials of the form. Sloat's visual compositions occur on three or four levels at once, as she aligns the forms of the source text, the verbal text, the collage, and the collection. I believe this multi-level resonance sets new parameters for poetry. With her flexibility with syntax and fluid subjects, Sloat forges new insights that call us to question the way we relate to what confines us, and to re-set the limits of a poem. I've loved reading and re-reading Hotel Almighty. I find something new each time I open the book, and I continue to learn from the box of many boxes Sloat presents here." —Diagram, online "[Misery] explores the mode and function of artistic creation as it relates to life itself, the ways confinement and suffering can become means to radical opening. Sloat’s Hotel Almighty internalizes all of this, both commenting and building on King’s explorations in both the form and lyricism of her erasures." —Dream Pop Journal, online "Sloat’s work here belongs within the offbeat orthodoxy of found poetry; the popular label 'blackout poetry' certainly applies to her method of scratching out, painting over or otherwise obscuring printed text, thereby bringing novel messages to the surface. And yet these terms, which live in negative language, don’t fully capture Sloat’s sublime, unsettling outcomes. She coaxes Technicolor poetry from preexisting pages; new verse isn’t merely found—as in stumbled upon—but unearthed." —The Curator "[A]n innovative, compelling work of visual lyric." —Women’s Voices for Change, online "Hotel Almighty is a profound work of reinvention — from King’s pop fiction to a hybrid work where houses grow wild with flowers, where one asks hell to “subside a little” (42), and where the reader enjoys every minute of the bizarre, vivid, delightful journey." —The Indianapolis Review "This is the technical and dramatic pinnacle of erasure poetry." —Naoko Fujimoto Poetry & Graphic Poetry “Sarah J. Sloat’s erasure-collages create intimate and intricate pairings that ricochet back and forth between text and image. In one, a picture of a giant hand tenderly touching a tiny telephone speaks to the page’s mournful question, ‘If I could be / A dim shape slumped over / and round / Would that be so bad?’ In another, the erased text (‘The sound of the wind filled the phone / squeezing into the line / like a nerve awake at night’) is translated into red stitches approaching, then encircling a tree. Hotel Almighty is a marvel.” —Matthea Harvey

Stanford University Press Showpiece City: How Architecture Made Dubai
Book SynopsisStaggering skylines and boastful architecture make Dubai famous—this book traces them back to a twentieth-century plan for survival. In 1959, experts agreed that if Dubai was to become something more than an unruly port, a plan was needed. Specifically, a town plan was prescribed to fortify the city from obscurity and disorder. With the proverbial handshake, Dubai's ruler hired British architect John Harris to design Dubai's strategy for capturing the world's attention—and then its investments. Showpiece City recounts the story of how Harris and other hired professionals planned Dubai's spectacular transformation through the 1970s. Drawing on exclusive interviews, private archives, dog-eared photographs, and previously overlooked government documents, Todd Reisz reveals the braggadocio and persistence that sold Dubai as a profitable business plan. Architecture made that plan something to behold. Reisz highlights initial architectural achievements—including the city's first hospital, national bank, and skyscraper—designed as showpieces to proclaim Dubai's place on the world stage. Reisz explores the overlooked history of a skyline that did not simply rise from the sands. In the city's earliest modern architecture, he finds the foundations of an urban survival strategy of debt-wielding brinkmanship and constant pitch making. Dubai became a testing ground for the global city—and prefigured how urbanization now happens everywhere.Trade Review"Showpiece City is a meticulous reconstruction of the 'creation' of Dubai. With impeccable timing, Todd Reisz presents one of the key stories of the history of globalization—at the moment of its uncertain future."—Rem Koolhaas"Todd Reisz offers a gold mine of new material, giving both historical and contemporary explanation of the dynamics that have shaped Dubai. In its elegant prose, Showpiece City is a major contribution to the history of the region and of global cities in general."—Hashim Sarkis, MIT School of Architecture + Planning"Gripping and insightful, Showpiece City is a much-needed history of the making and remaking of Dubai. Todd Reisz masterfully depicts the complex struggles between local rulers, merchants, colonial administrators, and various consultants that undergirded planning logics. A must-read for anyone interested in architecture and urban planning."—Rosie Bsheer, Harvard University, author of Archive Wars: The Politics of History in Saudi Arabia"Dubai has long been catnip for Western journalists, vilified as a metastasizing ahistorical Gomorrah that operates according to the logic of the airport and the amusement park. Finally, Showpiece City offers up a vivid and unusually writerly account of the emirate that gives lie to the unimaginative one-liner. Todd Reisz sensitively takes us back in time, narrating the genesis of delirious Dubai as we know it through the stories of its hodgepodge residents, leaders and, crucially, the first generation of architects and town planners who gave shape to this endlessly interesting strip of land."—Negar Azimi, writer and Senior Editor, Bidoun magazine"With elegant and accessible prose and abundant illustrations, [Reisz] illuminates a complex tale of international business/politics, development, stories-of-place, and nation building."—M. C. Childs, CHOICE"With capering prose and taut storytelling, Reisz begins to rebuild Dubai around the winding Creek, highlighting the successes and failures that shaped the foundations of the city as we know it today."—Razmig Bedirian, The National"Showpiece City is an impressive achievement and contribution to the rapidly growing subfield of Middle East urban studies... This is a ground-breaking book that provides original insight into the minutia of Dubai in the 1950s to the 1970s while simultaneously contributing to larger debates on the urban history of power and space."—Deen Sharp, International Journal of Middle East Studies"[Showpiece City is a tour de force of archival research, and it helps dismantle the common stereotypical assumption that Dubai is a 'fake city,' a 'shallow city,' or that which was created overnight out of nothing. Reisz's meticulous usage of primary sources raises the bar for other architectural historians."—Pamela Karimi, American Historical ReviewTable of ContentsPrologue: Here's a Plan 1. Bustle 2. Lund Humphries Publishers Ltd Eufrasia Burlamacchi
Book SynopsisThe first monograph entirely devoted to the illuminated manuscripts of Sister Eufrasia Burlamacchi (1478-1548), this book demonstrates that her artistry should not be confined to painting or sculpture alone. Within the convent walls of San Domenico in Lucca where she lived and worked, Burlamacchi attained high levels of artistic proficiency through her knowledge of drawing and colour technique, composition, treatment of space and proportions. This book highlights that Sister Eufrasia was aware of the progress illumination underwent in contact with the artists we now include in the High Renaissance. She quickly established a style which she then passed on to younger sisters in faith to establish a convent workshop where mutual exchange was the norm. Here, for the first time, Eufrasia Burlamacchi is recognized and discussed as an influential and gifted artist in her own right.

Edition Reuss Naked Girls with Small Breasts
Book SynopsisIn the era dominated by very big breasts, the book you are holding is a miracle. It is the result of a long and tenacious work, made in an unquenched quest for beauty and mammal shapes. Dave Naz is a natural small breasts enthusiast. In history of art, it was not only the Spanish writer and poet Roman Gomez de la Serna who asked himself: why have some women such little breasts? Amazons breasts, for instance, always raised a lot of questions. In the Middle Ages, paintings of the Virgin Mary often showed the Madonna with a very small bulging breast, a symbol of her beauty. Until the 17th century or so, western painting glorified womens physique with breasts like Reinette apples, always highlighted by low-cuts. White, small and spherical breasts were considered as the criteria number one to seduce. These breasts, said to be perfect, were actually called tits in the courteous tongue, an allusion to their smallness. Yet, etymologically, the word breast does not necessarily indicate anything big. On the contrary, the term comes from old Saxon briost, meaning bud. These photographs celebrate with passion the amazing diversity of small breasts. There is no pair like another. Each woman has a unique and original one. Conclusion: Women with small breasts can be beautiful and very erotic.

British Museum Press Hew Locke
Book SynopsisA remarkable book a precious album or scrapbook of ideas, insights and specially chosen images of objects that have a multitude of stories to tell.' Art Africa magazine What have we here? presents us with the overlooked and excluded segments of British legacy, utilising the power of art to question what we already know, and what there is yet to learn.' Palatinate Together with his own artworks, contemporary artist Hew Locke uses the British Museum's collection as a springboard to explore themes of colonialism and cultural interactions. Hew Locke is interested in dissecting the messy and complex ways in which museums are implicated in histories of empire. This project has enabled me to engage with the museum's collections in a much deeper way than ever before, and in a way few artists have had the privilege of doing. I have always been interested in the way objects are interpreted through display in museums. What story has been distilled and is being told or implied about the past? How does it relate to the present? How can this telling be questioned, disrupted, or complicated?' The British Museum's history and collections are closely linked to those of the British Empire, which this book addresses alongside a consideration of today's often contentious and deeply felt debates around cultural heritage. Focusing on Britain's historic interactions with Africa, India and the Caribbean from around 1600 onwards, all of which had an impact on Guyana (where Locke grew up), Locke creates a personal exploration of the subject, weaving in his own works such as the Souvenir series and a new commission titled The Watchers. Using interventionist techniques to reframe the collection's historical objects, the artist hopes to leave readers with more questions than answers.

Prestel Snow: Peter Mathis
Book SynopsisRenowned for his gorgeous mountain scenes and spectacular photos of winter athletes, Peter Mathis has chosen black and white film to capture the essence of snow in this book. These stunning duotone images render a traditional Alpen landscape into painterly canvases that are in turns otherworldly, sensuous, haunting, and heavenly. Skiers’ tracks zig and zag through the powder and windswept waves of snow undulate like desert sand. Impeccably reproduced in large, full-bleed format, these images showcase an enormous palette, from the deepest black to the most immaculate white, and every imaginable tone in between. Mathis’ texts recall the instances of each shot, many of which require days of trekking through mountains with nearly fifty pounds of equipment strapped to his back. Reminiscent of the works of Ansel Adams and Edward Weston, Mathis’s photographs perfectly evoke the biting cold, blazing sun, deep shadows, and blinding lights that make the Alps a uniquely beautiful landscape and snow a powerful force of nature.

RIBA Publishing The Urban Block: A Guide for Urban Designers,
Book SynopsisThe block is no more than the land and building area defined by streets. It is the nature of the interface between the two, which has a critical impact on the quality of the spaces between those buildings. The importance of the block to city life is well rehearsed, and in any case, we seldom find ourselves in the business of making cities from scratch. But we are in the business of making new houses, neighbourhoods and new local centres, and we need lots of them: 250,000 a year to be imprecise. Against the background of a burgeoning housing shortage in the UK, there are varied issues to be reconciled. The Urban Block charts the fall and rise of the perimeter block as the staple of urban form and structure from ancient times. It takes you through the process of understanding, defining, structuring and designing the block. Carefully selected urban and suburban case examples explain “do's and don'ts” of good block layout and will help you to produce better masterplans, while staying in touch with commercial realities. This is an essential guide for urban designers, masterplanners and architects that will allow you to produce quality streetscapes in a contemporary context.Table of Contents0. Book SynopsisMohammad Gharipour is professor at the School of Architecture and Planning at Morgan State University. The recipient of the Hamad Bin Khalifa Fellowship in Islamic Art and the Spiro Kostof Fellowship Award from the Society of Architectural Historians, Gharipour has published extensively on architectural history. He is the the author of Gardens of Renaissance Europe and the Islamic Empires, Synagogues of the Islamic World, and Historiography of Persian Architecture and is editor of 'Bazaar in the Islamic City' (2012) and the founding editor of the 'International Journal of Islamic Architecture'.Trade ReviewMohammad Gharipour's fine book focuses on Persian gardens and the permanent or temporary structures within them, during the period from the fifteenth through the eighteenth centuries, but includes a useful concise survey of references to gardens in earlier literature stretching back to ancient Sumer, the Bible and the Qur'an. A scholarly book, it includes extensive apparatus of glossary, notes and sources, and 100 illustrations, many in color, generally of high quality and beautiful to study. It relies heavily on textual sources, including histories and poetry and travelers' accounts especially, and also pictorial sources, especially manuscript illuminations. Its wide scope seeks to set the garden in its social and historical context as a place for meetings and display and pleasure, as well as sometimes places of production. It goes beyond earlier treatments of the theme, including even color visualizations of Haravi's proposal for a "paradise" garden in the fifteenth century, and has systematic investigations of many questions, especially in regard to structures, such as tents, or thrones in gardens, and also discusses what can be said about the types and arrangements of plants." -- Lawrence Nees, university of Delaware * CHOICE *Much has been written about Islamic gardens and Islamic architecture. Mohammad Gharipour usefully discusses the relationship between the two…the contents are clearly arranged. -- Caroline Stone * SAUDI ARAMCO WORLD (US) *Table of ContentsList of Illustrations Acknowledgements Chapter 1: Introduction Chapter 2: The Garden and Pavilion in Near Eastern Pre-Islamic Texts, the Qur'an and Persian Poetry Chapter 3: The Garden and Pavilion in Persian Art Chapter 4: The Garden and Pavilion through the Lens of Travelers and Historians Chapter 5: Conclusion Matrix Glossary of Terms Poets, Historians and Travellers Notes Bibliography Index

Book SynopsisA groundbreaking and essential survey of the art of Lynette Yiadom-Boakye, offering an in-depth discussion of the development of the artist and positioning her work within a wider history of portraiture. Lynette Yiadom-Boakye: Fly In League With The Night celebrates the work of one of the most significant and acclaimed figurative painters of her generation. Fact and fiction fuse in Yiadom-Boakye’s paintings: they appear to be portraits, yet the people she depicts are not real but invented. Created from a composite of found images and her own imagination, her characters seem to exist outside of a specific time or place: they feel at once familiar yet mysterious. This ambiguity resonates again in the enigmatic titles she gives to her artworks. The artist is also a writer of poetry and prose, and for her, the two forms of creativity complement each other: ‘The things I can’t paint, I write, and the things I can’t write, I paint.’ This perceptive and engaging publication provides a comprehensive account of Yiadom-Boakye’s practice over the past two decades. With contributions by the celebrated poet Elizabeth Alexander and curators Andrea Schlieker and Isabella Maidment, alongside new writing by Yiadom-Boakye, Fly In League With The Night reflects the dual aspects of the artist’s career as both a painter and a writer and offers an intimate insight into her creative process.

World Book Media The Awesome 3-D Art Coloring Guide: Learn 3-D
Book SynopsisDiscover special colouring tips and tricks to make flat illustrations appear as if they’re about to jump right off the page! Each drawing is accompanied by step-by-step instructions and techniques tailored to the specific image. You’ll also find finishing techniques for maximizing the impact of the illusion, such as how to cut out and display your artwork and which angles are best for photographing your work to capture the full effect. There are 20 fantastic pictures included for you to cut out and show off!Trade ReviewLearn how to make simple flat shapes spring to life with this colouring book with a difference. A few stokes of the pencil and a parrot takes flight, a flying carpet takes off, a secret passageway goes deep into the ground and a playful kitten breaks through the paper to wave a paw. As a keen colourist I have quite a few colouring books so it is good to find one that takes the basic idea and goes somewhere new with it. The book opens with an explanation of how to make a drawing look three dimensional by using the rules of perspective to create an optical illusion. Learn how to use colour to show shadows, work out where the light is coming from and finally cut out the right sections to enhance the effect. It sounds complicated but it is simpler than you think, and suitable for a beginner. All you need is a spectrum of coloured pencils, a good rubber and a few other basics that most homes will have like a pencil sharpener, scissors or craft knife and a ruler. No brand names are used and the picture just shows a tin with a basic set of 24 colours; great to know that you don’t need to splash out on the most expensive professional quality pencils. Each of the 20 projects has a page sized photograph of the completed image plus nine steps with photographs of the work being done. There is a key showing all the colours used (nothing unusual, just basic shades without metallics) and the first picture uses two colours to show where the shadows lie and where the light source is coming from. At the back are all the projects printed on one side of the smooth white card with a useful dotted line where you can cut it out. Would that all coloring books had these features! There are tips scattered throughout and a guide showing how to photograph your work with your cellphone, prior to posting it proudly online with a hashtag indicating the source. This book, together with a tin of pencils would make a lovely gift for somebody… if you can bear to part with it! I’d love to see more innovative coloring books like this, well done Zakka Workshop. -- Rachel A Hyde * myshelf.com *

Philip Wilson Publishers Ltd Jean-Henri Riesener: Cabinetmaker to Louis XVI
Book SynopsisThis first major monograph on cabinetmaker Jean-Henri Riesener traces his life and career, bringing new insights into his business practice, designs and construction techniques. Jean-Henri Riesener (1734–1806) was one of the greatest French cabinetmakers of all time. From humble beginnings as a German immigrant in Paris, he found fame through the delivery of a magnificent roll-top desk to Louis XV in 1769. He went on to become Marie-Antoinette’s favourite cabinetmaker, supplying the queen and the court of Louis XVI with sumptuous furniture of superb quality. Renowned for his exquisite marquetry and refined designs, his pieces were ornamented with spectacular gilt-bronze mounts made by some of the greatest metalworkers in Paris. In the nineteenth century, Riesener’s name became associated with the very best of Louis XVI-period French furniture. His pieces continue to be highly sought after and are found in major museums worldwide. Based on the extensive collections of Riesener furniture in the Wallace Collection, Waddesdon Manor and the Royal Collection, the authors examine the objects and their history, and highlight the changing tastes of the nineteenth-century collectors who acquired so many former French royal pieces. The new illustrations and visual glossary add another important resource for art historians, decorative arts enthusiasts and furniture lovers.Trade ReviewThe first serious Riesener monograph. -- Alexandre Pradère * The Art Newspaper *This authoritative tome is both an enjoyable read as well as a scholarly compilation of original research [...] it is extremely refreshing to be presented with such a clearly written and entirely unapologetic celebration of one of the creative geniuses of the French eighteenth century. Book SynopsisTrade Review"What the Emperor Built will make even those familiar with the city’s ancient buildings feel that while they may have looked, they perhaps did not entirely see." * South China Morning Post *"[A] detailed study of the architecture created during the early Ming dynasty reign of Yung Lo" * Choice *"[O]ne of her book’s greatest strengths lies in the clarity of both the argument and the handsomely reproduced illustrations presented in its pages...the story of magnificent buildings and the millions involved in their construction is sure to inspire lively discussions about the profound impact of Yongle’s architectural vision on global architectural history and global history as a whole." * Journal of the Society of Architectural Historians *"The book is remarkable for its successful integration of architectural with political and economic history, disciplines that are usually practiced separately... This is architectural history at its best, and sets a standard for future work in the field." * Journal of the American Oriental Society *"State architecture is a transformative art of power and persuasion.
