    Book SynopsisFor ten years Calvin and Hobbes was one of the world's most beloved comic strips. And then, on the last day of 1995, the strip ended. Its mercurial and reclusive creator, Bill Watterson, not only finished the strip but withdrew entirely from public life. This title traces the life and career of the intensely private man behind Calvin and Hobbes.Trade Review"'Martell, who wears his fan heart on his sleeve, travels far and wide to gather pieces of Watterson lore. Book SynopsisThe teabowl has become an iconic form in contemporary ceramics. Having travelled from Japan, where it was an inherent part of chanoyu, or tea ceremony, it has evolved and adapted to become something very different in the West. Revered for its associations of its past and its connotations of sophistication and simplicity, the teabowl enjoys an elevated status. Here, Bonnie Kemske looks at the form as a whole, considering the history and ideas behind the original tea ceremony: how it moved into contemporary ceramics, and the way it is used today. She explores the wide range of teabowls, from traditional ones to those being made not for the tearoom but for the gallery, as well as introducing the international potters making them. The book also tackles some difficult questions, notably, how has the concept of the teabowl changed as it has been reinvented in contemporary ceramics? How does it sit in relation to its history? This book is wide in scope, thorough in Trade ReviewBonnie Kemske has crafted a compelling and deeply personal meditation on the power of the teabowl in Japan and in the world of ceramics today. This volume is beautifully illustrated and attentive to an array of historic and contemporary teabowls. * Morgan Pitelka, Professor of Asian Studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, USA, and author of Handmade Culture (2005) and Spectacular Accumulation (2015) *Table of ContentsList of Illustrations Acknowledgements Introduction: The Iconic Teabowl 1. • Becoming Palestine

    Duke University Press Becoming Palestine

    15 in stock

    Book SynopsisIn Becoming Palestine, Gil Z. Hochberg examines how contemporary Palestinian artists, filmmakers, dancers, and activists use the archive in order to radically imagine Palestine''s future. She shows how artists such as Jumana Manna, Kamal Aljafari, Larissa Sansour, Farah Saleh, Basel Abbas, and Ruanne Abou-Rahme reimagine the archive, approaching it not through the desire to unearth hidden knowledge, but to sever the identification of the archive with the past. In their use of archaeology, musical traditions, and archival film and cinematic footage, these artists imagine a Palestinian future unbounded from colonial space and time. By urging readers to think about archives as a break from history rather than as history''s repository, Hochberg presents a fundamental reconceptualization of the archive''s liberatory potential.Trade Review“Becoming Palestine offers a treasure of insights, challenging the reader to keep up with the radically new temporalities and aesthetic forms in which archives are being called upon to carve out a new Palestine, to imagine what its political space might look and feel like. Here archives have become the active sites for conceptualizing alternative futures. Moving with deft nuance through projects realized in video art, dance, essay-film, and performance, Gil Z. Hochberg provides perceptive witness to artistic interventions with ‘phantasmal power’ to reclaim space for these political visions in the making.” -- Ann Laura Stoler, author of * Duress: Imperial Durabilities in Our Times *“Appearing at a time when interest in Palestinian imaginative culture is higher than it has ever been, Becoming Palestine is a highly original and illuminating study of recent Palestinian creative works unlike any that has been published thus far. It will attract scholars of Israel and Palestine, Palestinian culture, and modern Arab and Middle Eastern art and cinema, and I expect it to be widely read by curators and practitioners throughout the world who work on art that engages with archives and politics.” -- Nadia Yaqub, author of * Palestinian Cinema in the Days of Revolution *“Becoming Palestine is a most interesting contribution to studies about the Palestinian resistance against the settler colony, under which they have lived since 1948. Gil Z. Hochberg adds a radical analysis of the imaginative creations of young artists in the twenty-first century. It would be an eye-opener to students and scholars of dance and the performing arts, and Middle East, international politics, and cultural studies.” * Arab Studies Quarterly *“In this book, Hochberg makes a powerful contribution to the important and growing field of critical Palestine Studies that complicates and questions assumptions about a Palestine presented in mainstream politics as a depoliticized space devoid of the reality of occupation and settler colonialism.” -- Dina Matar * Middle East Journal *“The abiding contribution of Becoming Palestine is how it extends awareness of some particularly provocative and politically acute art. This book conducts careful, detailed labour throughout, explaining works that have existed almost exclusively within the time-limited confines of metropolitan art museums and art-film festivals.” -- Kay Dickinson * Screen *“The artists and creators who populate [Becoming Palestine] create new archives by remixing, citing, and manipulating older materials, to borrow just a few of the expansive set of verbs Hochberg uses to describe archival projects. . . . Becoming Palestine offers a bold path forward for discussions of future, hope, and political possibilities in both Palestinian Studies and broader anti-colonial resistance.” -- Katie Logan * Markaz Review *Table of ContentsPreface vii Acknowledgments xiii Introduction. Book Synopsis"Art as Social Action . . . is an essential guide to deepening social art practices and teaching them to students." —Laura Raicovich, president and executive director, Queens MuseumArt as Social Action is both a general introduction to and an illustrated, practical textbook for the field of social practice, an art medium that has been gaining popularity in the public sphere. With content arranged thematically around such topics as direct action, alternative organizing, urban imaginaries, anti-bias work, and collective learning, among others, Art as Social Action is a comprehensive manual for teachers about how to teach art as social practice.Along with a series of introductions by leading social practice artists in the field, valuable lesson plans offer examples of pedagogical projects for instructors at both college and high school levels with contributions written by prominent social practice artists, teachers, and thinkers, including: Mary Jane Jacob Maureen Connor Brian Rosa Pablo Helguera Jen de los Reyes Jeanne van Heeswick Jaishri Abichandani Loraine Leeson Ala Plastica Daniel Tucker Fiona Whelan Bo Zheng Dipti Desai Noah Fischer Lesson plans also reflect the ongoing pedagogical and art action work of Social Practice Queens (SPQ), a unique partnership between Queens College CUNY and the Queens Museum.Trade Review"Art as Social Action presents a sharp set of pedagogical tools for teaching and learning about art as a vehicle for social engagement. Having evolved from an innovative collaboration between Queens College and Queens Museum, the book's offerings are embedded in the workings of both community and artists, breaking down the very idea of what participation means in art and non-art contexts. Key questions of authorship, which audiences are served, how does engagement happen, and whose needs are met and how are addressed with forthright vigor. The volume importantly provides rigorous interrogation of the process as well as the outcomes; it is an essential guide to deepening social art practices and teaching them to students." —Laura Raicovich, president and executive director, Queens Museum, NYC "It's no small thing to educate at the intersection of art and social justice. It's a scope of inquiry that has tripped up art historians, artists, and college deans for multiple decades. This contribution is valuable to educators in its insight, pragmatism, and breadth." —Nato Thompson, artistic director of Creative Time, author of Culture as a Weapon: The Art of Influence in Everyday Life "As a curriculum resource, this book is most useful for artist-educators who are already doing and teaching socially engaged art. . . . Art as Social Action also provides a snapshot of the many ways in which socially engaged art practices overlap with social justice approaches to art education, particularly those that attend to power relationships between teachers, students, schools, and communities, and to the social structures that shape art education pedagogy." —Studies in Art Education: A Journal of Issues and Research “I find Art as Social Action to be a workhorse of a book that is filled with a vast array of social practice projects, teaching strategies, and resources. . . . [T]his book opens up a much-needed conversation about issues that arise when teaching something that is, for the most part, always under development, in conflict with traditional ways of making art, and requires some serious shifts in thinking about the potential for art/pedagogy in contemporary contexts.” —Lynn Sanders-Bustle, Art/Research International: A Transdisciplinary Journal "This book is a great resource that connects the dots between the pedagogy for socially engaged art and the most pressing pressure points for social change. In doing so, it reinforces the urgency of this art practice, and signals clearly that social practice prioritizes societal change over academicism." —Paul Ramirez Jonas, artist and professor, Hunter College CUNY "Art as Social Action is a powerful testament to the resliience of artists and educators in keeping critical thinking and creative expression central to how we define ourselves as a people in the era of late capitalism. Chloë Bass and Gregory Sholette bookend this anthology of methodologies with their key wisdom on how, where, and why art and education blur into the social realm. Now more than ever there is a need to recognize the plurality of voices, approaches, and directions that socially engaged art practice offers. This book shows that the many-headed beast of social art practice cannot be defined singularly or sold in duplication. Any practitioner working with communities or any educator looking for strategies for engagement would benefit from the wealth of information in these pages." —R. M. Sánchez-Camus, PhD, Social Art Network, UK "Art as Social Action is not your typical book about socially engaged art. . . . It is a collection of texts by teachers who, together with their art students, look for creative ways to enter in a discussion with society outside the classroom about topics as different as labour conditions, immigrant rights or mining on sacred Native American sites. Texts by teachers who want to make works with rather than about local communities. The car went on to have a busy post-works racing career, first with Ecurie Ecosse, then with privateer drivers Bill Smith and Geoffrey Allison. Among its small number of collector custodians in later years, the names Briggs Cunningham in America and Adrian Hamilton (son of Duncan) in the UK stand out. The development of the C-type is described, focusing on the three lightweights of 1953 with thinner-gauge aluminum bodies, pioneering disc brakes, and aircraft-style fuel tanks. Book SynopsisGeorge IV was arguably the most magnificent of British monarchs. By the time George ascended to the throne in 1820 after nine years as Prince Regent, he was already well-known for his extravagant lifestyle. Visual display played an important role in his public image, an image that he worked hard to control. Through the spectacular interiors of his houses and palaces, numerous flattering portraits, carefully choreographed state occasions, and his fashion choices, George IV attempted to shape public perception of his person as heir to the throne and as king. George was the collector and commissioner of many of the finest works of art in the Royal Collection. He also turned Buckingham House into a Palace, radically remodeled Windsor Castle inside and out, and built the Royal Pavilion at Brighton, an oriental-style pleasure palace by the sea. In London, his architectural vision extended to the design of Regent Street and Regent?s Park. Set against the backdrop of the French Revolution and Napoleonic Wars, and a period of unprecedented global exploration, this book considers the monarch?s public image, taste for the theatrical and exotic, admiration of French style, and all-consuming passion for collecting. George IV: Art & Spectacle is published to accompany a major exhibition at The Queen?s Gallery, Buckingham Palace, timed to coincide with the bicentenary of George IV?s accession to the throne. This volume offers a long-overdue reappraisal of one of the most important figures in the formation of the Royal Collection.

    Circa Press TAT*: Inspirational Graphic Ephemera

    4 in stock

    Book SynopsisTat* is a bit of a graphic designer's curse. Walk into any design studio and you will see tat pinned to the walls or placed with loving care on top of a computer screen. Even the purist will have a secret cache hidden away somewhere. Andy Altmann began collecting tat while he was on his Foundation course, getting ready for an interview at St Martins School of Art. He'd been asked to present a sketchbook, but worried that he couldn't draw very well, he decided to start a scrapbook: "I rummaged through the drawers at home and found some football cards from the late 1960s and early '70s (plenty of Georgie Best), an instruction leaflet from an old Hoover, Christmas cracker jokes, and so on. Then I started on the magazines, cutting out images of anything that interested me. And finally I took myself off to the college library, where I photocopied things from books before reaching for the scissors and glue." It was the beginning of a significant collecting habit. So what it is that makes a piece of graphic tat interesting? Is it the 'retro' thing - a fascination with a bygone age, the primitive printing techniques, the naivety of the design, or the use of colour? All of the above, of course, but it's not quite that simple. "Occasionally people offer me something they've found that they think I might like", says Andy. "But usually they're wrong - it doesn't excite me at all. The magic is missing." To a graphic designer, most the content of this book can safely be regarded as 'bad' design. But there is some magic in each and every piece that has made Andy either pick it up off the street, trail through online links, or enter some dodgy looking shop on the other side of the world just to snap it up. Here you'll find everything from sweet wrappers to flash cards, from soap powder boxes to speedway flyers, from wrestling programmes to bus tickets. More tat than you can shake a stick at. Taken together, it represents a lifetime of gleeful hunting and gathering. * tat (noun) - anything that looks cheap, is of low quality, or in bad condition; junk, rubbish, debris, detritus, crap, shiteTrade Review"As any graphic designer will know, creative inspiration is everywhere. From storefronts, books and interiors to packaging, fashion...even 'tat'...It's this 'tat' that designer Andy Altmann is now celebrating in his new book." -- Katy Cowan, Creativeboom;

    Oro Editions Labels of Empire: Textile Trademarks: Windows

    Book SynopsisAt one time Great Britain clothed the world. In the 1880s, when the British textile industry was at its height, 85 percent of the world’s population wore clothing made from fabric produced in the mills of Lancashire. From 1910 to 1913 alone, seven billion yards of cloth were folded, stamped, labeled, and baled. Most of this output was for export, and 30 percent of it went to India. British textile manufacturers selling into the competitive Indian market were dealing with a largely illiterate population. In order to differentiate their goods, they stamped their cloth with distinctive images—a crouching tiger or perhaps an elephant standing on top of a globe. When chromolithography came into widespread use in the late 1800s, illustrated paper labels (known in the trade as “shipper’s tickets”) made to appeal to the local people were added. Designed, printed, and registered in Manchester, these brightly colored images were pasted onto the pieces of cloth being sold, further helping to establish a company’s brand. Hindu gods, native animals, scenes from the great Indian epics—the Mahabharata and Ramayana—and views of everyday life were common subjects. In a sense a form of premium, they provided the consumer with an additional incentive to buy the goods of a particular firm. Labels of Empire begins with the late 19th-century heyday of British textile manufacturing and closes with Indian independence in 1947. By combining visual narrative, popular culture, and magical realism in a way never done before, this book offers an unprecedented look at the British textile industry in the time of the Raj—and its remarkably successful use of paper labels as trademarks.Table of ContentsPreface 6 Notes to the Reader 8 Introduction 10 CHAPTER 1 GODS and GODDESSES 60 KRISHNA 62 VISHNU 88 SHIVA 112 OTHER GODS and GODDESSES 126 CHAPTER 2 THE RAMAYANA 166 CHAPTER 3 THE MAHABHARATA 208 CHAPTER 4 INDIAN ROYALTY 230 CHAPTER 5 THE BRITISH RAJ 264 CHAPTER 6 EVERYDAY LIFE 308 CHAPTER 7 ENTERTAINMENT and CELEBRATIONS 338 CHAPTER 8 SPORTS and HUNTING 374 CHAPTER 9 FLORA and FAUNA 386 CHAPTER 10 BEAUTIES 416 CHAPTER 11 TRANSPORT 430 CHAPTER 12 ARCHITECTURE 448 CHAPTER 13 RAJA RAVI VARMA 468 CHAPTER 14 BANDS, BLANKS, and FOILS 482 CHAPTER 15 INDIAN COTTON MILLS 492 CHAPTER 16 SWARAJ and SWADESHI 508 Timeline 532 Glossary 534 Deities and Other Celestial Beings 536 Selected Bibliography 537 Company Index 538 Credits and Acknowledgments 542

The Trevi Fountain in Rome, Schloss Sanssouci Palace in Potsdam, the Brooklyn Bridge in New York… all deserted, in the middle of the day. The global Covid-19 lockdown of Spring and Summer 2020 that had millions of people confined to their homes made for remarkable photographs around the world. Cities of Silence shows striking images of more than 60 major cities in lockdown — eerie, yet beautiful snapshots of otherwise densely crowded spaces. Free of people and traffic, the pure aesthetics of each site shine in their original glory: the symmetry of a square or boulevard, the harmony of a façade, the unfettered beauty of an empty stretch of beach. A document of an extraordinary and challenging period, and a reminder of a slower-paced world, Cities of Silence also offers us the visual space, and perhaps, clarity, to imagine a better future. Book SynopsisThe Victorian Era represents the cradle of our modern society - a time when social change and new technology heralded an industrialised economy. By the time of Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee in 1897, claims were proudly made of the progress since her accession to the throne. Steam ships had replaced sail, the railway system had superseded the stage coach, and the motor car had just begun to replace the horse. Not only did mass production create a new wealth of household products, ceramics, toys and games, but the arrival of cheaper printing and colour lithography made possible a profusion of printed material. The music sheets, colourful scraps, advertisements, greetings cards and children's book illustrations that fill The Victorian Scrapbook - with such vigour - all give us an insight into the life and times of our forebears. Fortunately the thousand items gathered here have survived in remarkable condition, some by chance, others by having themselves been pasted down into contemp

    Book Synopsis'If you thought oil pastels were just something for children, prepare to think again.' The Artist '...look on in wonder as Tim shows you how you can use this neglected but simple medium to create real works of art...Just open this book at random and you'll be hooked.' Paint Magazine Learn to paint with oil pastels in this colourful, accessible book for newcomers to the medium. Tim Fisher demonstrates how to use the oil pastels on their own, or in conjunction with acrylic inks and paints, and watercolours, on a variety of surfaces, to create beautiful paintings that will maintain their vibrancy for years to come. The Beginner's Guide to Painting with Oil Pastels features six full step-by-step projects covering a variety of subjects including animal portraits, street scenes, boats and harbours, buildings and glorious landscapes. Tim introduces the reader to mark-making with oil pastels, explains the history of the medium, and how to protect and keep an oil pastel painting once it is complete. Trade ReviewIf you thought oil pastels were just something for your children, think again. As Tim makes clear in his introduction, they were invented 100 years ago as a means of combining the convenience of wax crayons with the quality of pigments suited to more serious art. They have, however struggled to escape the schoolroom connection and have been too frequently overlooked. This book is aimed at the beginner, so you'll need to balance this approach and detailed step-by-step demonstrations against the quality of work that Tim produces and adapt the way you use this, one of the very few books on this subject. Persistence will be rewarded and, with a minimal amount of equipment, you can discover a medium that, while perfect for outdoor sketching, is capable of the subtle effects more often associated with chalk pastels or even watercolour. * The Artist, February 2019 *If you think that oil pastels are just a pricier version of the wax crayon this book will show you how they have really come of age. From their invention in the early 20th century to the acid-free and non-yellowing type we use today they are surprisingly versatile, and mix well with other art media. I confess to having no idea of their origins so found the short history very interesting. This book will particularly appeal to anybody who possesses existing art skills (and materials) but wants to discover how to incorporate oil pastels in their work. It is a beginner’s guide to this and not a primer on how to draw and paint. Discover what brand the author buys and what else he suggests you can use. A surprising array of different materials and tools come into play, from a hairdryer to a scalpel, acrylic and watercolour paints, and inks, encaustic iron, hot glue gun and many more. Prepare a variety of surfaces and work through several exercises on mark making, sgraffito, stencilling, masking, using solvents, working with other types of paint and more. Each exercise will produce a painting, the best way of learning any art technique. After the basics there are several projects, which show in classic Search Press style (ie many captioned photographs for a foolproof learning experience) what to do. Paint flowers, a street scene in Venice, trees, a harbour, a dog and a country cottage. Learn too how to frame your work and look after it. It shows how art doesn’t have to be about just one medium, but mixing it up a bit can produce some excellent results and also how versatile modern materials can be. -- Rachel Hyde * myshelf.com *Oil pastels have a hard time of it in the art world. Often regarded as mere child’s toys, they were invented in Japan some 100 years ago (Tim includes a fascinating history) as a means of combining wax crayons with the better quality pigments demanded by the serious artist. As a medium, they have much to recommend them, being easy to carry and requiring little in the way of ancillary equipment. They don’t drop colour, have no drying time and the images they create are thoroughly robust. If nothing else, therefore, they’re worthy of consideration as a lightweight sketching medium. However, as Tim amply and ably demonstrates here, they’re capable of considerable subtlety and the results he produces could easily be taken for soft pastel or even watercolour. This is, as the title suggests, aimed at the beginner and includes a very straightforward introduction and a series of detailed demonstrations that make the medium’s capabilities clear. For the more experienced artist, this might be a little more than is required, but it may still prove helpful if you are trying something that is unfamiliar. If I were to tell you that this is easily the best book on oil pastels I’ve seen, you’d rightly point out that it’s probably the only one. This isn’t quite true – I’m pretty sure I remember another – but Tim hasn’t taken the easy route and has put a lot of trouble into producing a book it will be hard to better. -- artbookreview.net * Henry Malt *Well-known to Leisure Painter readers, Tim Fisher demonstrates how to use oil pastels in this Beginner's Guide to Painting with Oil Pastels. The book includes history of oil pastels as well as the materials and tools you will need. Six full step-by-step projects, covering a variety of subjects show readers how to create vibrant oil pastel paintings, and demonstrate how they can be used in conjunction with acrylic inks and paints, as well as watercolours. * Leisure Painter, January 2019 *Tim's use of line, colour and economy of shape, make it one of the best books on painting, period. * Paint magazine (November 2018) *In a series of full-colour demonstrations, Tim shows you how to work with subjects as diverse as landscapes, buildings, boats, dogs, trees and flowers. He will also show you how to achieve subtle effects with your oil pastels by using blenders and by combining them with other media such as acrylics and inks. -- The SAA * The SAA Catalogue 19/20 *Table of ContentsIntroduction The history of oil pastels Materials and tools oil pastels Additional materials and tools Surfaces Surface preparation Getting started Painting a red pepper Techniques Mark-making Special effects Using solvents Using oil pastels with other media Projects Flowers: Poppy Field Trees and foliage: Norfolk Lane Street scenes: Venice Buildings: Staithes Cottages harbour scene: ‘Le Fantasque’ Animal portraits: Freyja Care and framing of your artwork Index

I really like the layout, it’s been well thought out. The book begins with basic techniques so you are able to establish what equipment you will need and safety measures you’ll need to be aware of.
