Book SynopsisThe Art of Japanese Architecture presents a complete overview of Japanese architecture in its historical and cultural context. The book begins with a discussion of early prehistoric dwellings and concludes with a description of works by important modern Japanese architects. Along the way it discusses the iconic buildings and architectural styles for which Japan is so justly famous—from elegant Shinden and Sukiya aristocratic villas like the Kinkakuji "Golden Pavilion" in Kyoto, to imposing Samurai castles like Himeji and Matsumoto, and tranquil Zen Buddhist gardens and tea houses to rural Minka thatched-roof farmhouses and Shinto shrines. Each period in the development of Japan's architecture is described in detail and the most important structures are shown and discussed—including dozens of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The aesthetic trends in each period are presented within the context of Japanese society at the time, providing a unique in-depth understanding of the way Japanese architectural styles and buildings have developed over time and the great variety that is visible today. The book is profusely illustrated with hundreds of hand-drawn 3D watercolor illustrations and color photos as well as prints, maps and diagrams. Sixth & Spring Books Basics of Drawing: The Ultimate Guide for

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisPopular artist Leonardo Pereznieto—whose instructional YouTube videos have earned him millions of views and a devoted fan base—teaches beginners the fundamentals of traditional drawing. In his first book “You Can Draw!” Leonardo Pereznieto helped artists recreate the realistic surfaces and textures that make his own work so popular. Now he’s going back to the very beginning to teach them the basics of drawing, covering first exercises, fundamental techniques, light and shading, composition, and perspective, and more. Loaded with information on materials, a glossary of essential terminology, and hundreds of illustrations, this illuminating guide includes such projects as a fall still life of fruit in a basket, with instructions on shape, shadow, and detail, as well as a cityscape, a landscape with depth of field, animals, train tracks, jewelry, and drawing with a message. Once you’ve mastered these basics, you can unleash your imagination on whatever subject you like!

  • The Beginner’s Guide to Drawing Portraits

Search Press Ltd The Beginner’s Guide to Drawing Portraits

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisDrawing the human face has a timeless and universal appeal, though it's often perceived as being difficult to achieve. Carole's book removes the mystery from portrait painting, and makes the subject accessible to even absolute beginners. She shows you in easy step-by-step stages how to use line, tone and form to capture a likeness and give it both personality and expression. Containing simple exercises along with longer step-by-step projects, this book leads you by the hand through the different elements of the face, allowing you to gradually build your skills before leading on to successfully describing your subject's likeness and character. Composition, clothing, props and more personal characteristics like age and hairstyles are all covered. The book also includes information on drawing from life.Trade ReviewThis is a complete re-working and a great deal of credit must go to Carole Massey who has done the heavy lifting here. She has not only added new material, but re-written and simplified to an amazing extent. Concentrating on the head and shoulders simplifies things immeasurably – you can forget about hands, feet, clothes and posture, for instance. It also allows her to concentrate on the form, features and expressions of the face, which is mainly what the book is about. This is not so much a course as an examination of the way portraits are built up. Although the way through it is progressive – you’re always building on and reinforcing what you learnt before, there aren’t the same number of examples, exercises and demonstrations. They’re there, and you’ll find them, but in a less structured way. It’s very subtle how the material you need is to hand just when you want it, rather than when you’ve come to expect it. There’s an excellent variety of gender, ethnicity, shape, form and age here. Carole is particularly good with babies and children and you could justify the relatively modest cover price for that alone. This is probably one of the best introductions to portrait drawing around and the fact that it uses recycled material is probably only of interest to reviewers like me. You won’t see the joins. -- Henry Malt * Artbookreview.net *Leisure Painter contributor, Carole Massey's eagerly anticipated guide to drawing portraits is aimed specifically at the beginner. Carole takes great pains to dispel the myth that portrait painting is only for experienced artists and makes it accessible to beginners through step-by-step examples. Simple exercises and longer projects show how to use line, tone and form to capture a likeness, using both monochrome and coloured pencils. There are also chapters on composition, clothing, props and more personal characteristics, such as hairstyles, resulting in portraits full of character and life. -- Leisure PainterMore people than ever have been finding joy in drawing and painting – it’s a fabulous way to unwind and relax. However, if you would like to improve your skills, then this is the perfect guide to take you through the stages. Step-by-step instructions remove the mystery to creating your very own masterpieces, with tips on how to capture personality and expression. * The People's Friend *I have always struggled with drawing noses and mouths when it comes to portrait drawing. This book is full of useful tips and advice on how to plan your portraits before going free hand. There is great advice on getting your proportions right which I have found extremely helpful. Once you’ve gained your grounding there are sections on shading and experimentation which is something I’m hoping to progress to. The book is not overly wordy like some others and it’s full of photos which really illustrate the points perfectly. I would thoroughly recommend this book to amateur artists like me. -- Emma Owen * Amazon *The last time Search Press rebadged a title in their Drawing Masterclass series as a beginner's guide, I raised an eyebrow so quizzically it would have made Roger Moore blush. They've done it again, but this time they - or rather Carole Massey, who has done the heavy lifting - have pulled off quite a conjuring trick. The rabbit has been pulled out of the hat, sawn in half, put back together again and released as a flock of doves, all without a step being missed. There's new material here as well as the original and the book is not so much a course as a gentle progression through faces, features, expressions and poses. Keeping it to the head and shoulders simplifies things no end. Carole is particularly good on babies and children, too. If you've been wanting to try portraiture, but have been looking for a starting point, you've found it. -- Henry Malt * The Artist *Excellent colour examples & easy to understand instructions to encourage a nervous beginner. -- James Holyland * Amazon Customer Review *Table of ContentsIntroduction 6 Materials 8 Your first portrait 26 Self portrait 28 Shape and structure 32 Features 38 Proportions 46 Capturing a likeness 68 Dimithra 72 Shading, tone and form 76 Character and expression 90 Moving on 96 Rosie 102 Drawing from life 106 Composition 114 Story 124 Maasai Warrior 132 Cora 136 Experimenting 140 Index 144

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisA reappraisal of the often-overlooked Chinese bronzes made from the twelfth through nineteenth centuries, demonstrating their profound impact on Chinese art and culture Bronze vessels were the ultimate emblems of power in ancient China. Beginning in the twelfth century, their rediscovery as evidence of an earlier golden age led to a revival of bronze casting. This publication is the first comprehensive study of these later Chinese bronzes in archaic styles, which were commissioned by emperors and officials from the twelfth through the nineteenth centuries to assert political legitimacy and alignment with traditional values. Renowned scholar Pengliang Lu redresses the misconception that these works were mere imitations of the ancient vessels they emulated, demonstrating that they were in fact creative reinterpretations of antique shapes and decorative motifs that transformed functional objects into symbols of erudition and taste. Featuring nearly two hundred objects, many never before publishedincluding ceremonial bells, incense burners, flower vases, ritual vessels, and writing utensilsLu explores their cultural and political significance from the Song dynasty through the Qing dynasty and shows their enormous influence on Chinese art and culture. Amber Books Ltd The Encyclopedia of the Roman Empire

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisRome may have fallen in the late fifth century CE, but more than 1,500 years later its mark on Europe and around the Mediterranean is still evident. It's not just in the roads, aqueducts and settlements, though, that Rome's immense legacy can be found. Or even in more recent buildings from the Renaissance to the present day that have been constructed in a neoclassical style. We need only look at modern law, which is based on principles developed during the Roman Empire. Or modern philosophy, which stands on the shoulders of work by Seneca and others. And although Latin may be a dead language, we still use it in scientific classification even for newly coined words. From Augustus's reign as the First Emperor of Rome to the Barbarian invasions beginning in the 5th century CE, The Encyclopedia of the Roman Empire is an outstanding celebration of the glory that was the Roman Empire. Ranging from military expansion to life within a Roman legion, from Pompeii to Jerusalem to Constantinople, from political assassinations to gladiatorial games, from the Roman Catacombs to Hadrian's Wall, and from the Jewish Revolt to early Christianity, the book expertly explores the political, cultural, social and religious history of the Roman Empire. This is the story of Marcus Agrippa, Caligula, Claudius, Hadrian, Livia and Hadrian and many others. Accessibly written and with a wealth of colour illustrations and photographs, The Encyclopedia of the Roman Empire is a fascinating reference work for any home.

Book SynopsisBrilliant and sophisticated fashion photographer, leading artist of Vogue magazine for six decades, Horst P. Horst has become a reference for entire generations in this photographic genre. This volume traces Horst’s main creative periods, from the beginning of his career to his latest creations, with a focus on some highlights of his production: the link with classical art which, nevertheless, doesn’t elude the influences of the avant-gardes, and surrealism in particular; the visual investigation of the human figure’s harmony and elegance, embellished by the perfect mastery of scene lighting; the fruitful and lasting collaboration with Vogue, a magazine for which the photographer has provided dozens of covers; the portraits of stars from the world of fashion and art, often set in their own homes, which once again reveal his indisputable compositional skills. Over 120 works, chosen from among his best known ones by the author himself, alongside a series of surprising previously unpublished works, testify to the talent and creative vision of one of the leading figures in 20th century photography. Text in English and Italian.

Book Synopsis"Belgian solutions is first of all a title, that became a way of speaking: 'Look, a Belgian solution.' It all started with me stopping to take pictures of situations that I later began publishing on Facebook under this title. After some time people were sending me more and more photos, not only from Belgium of course, but from all over the globe, pictures that in very different and individual ways always kept saying: 'Look, a Belgian solution.' or simply: 'Look, a solution.'" - David Helbich. Not every solution is an answer to a problem. The Brussels-based artist David Helbich started collecting 'Belgian Solutions' in 2006. Once he started to share his photos online on Facebook in 2008 (the Belgian Solutions page has over 23,000 fans), the project gathered speed, with contributions by Belgian Solutions spotters all over the world. Luster is publishing the third, updated and improved edition of the original publication.

  • Architectural Principles in the Age of Fraud

Oro Editions Architectural Principles in the Age of Fraud

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisPhilosophy exercises a massive influence on contemporary architectural culture and the understanding of the built environment. Discussions of architects and architectural academics are heavily loaded with theoretical ideas, concepts and views imported from the works of philosophers. At the same time this architectural employment of philosophy rarely goes beyond the tendency to mine philosophical works for ideas, words and phrases and use them, often without much understanding, in order to promote architectural agendas and embellish theoretical claims made by architects and academics. The book presents the history of this phenomenon for the past 100 years. It describes and analyses numerous, often funny, entertaining as well as embarrassing, examples of false intellectual pretence and pompous but incompetent philosophical posturing by prominent architects and architectural academics of the era and their efforts to bamboozle readers, colleagues and the general public. The book presents a powerful criticism of modernist views on architecture and argues that the rise of obfuscation and philosophical posturing among architects and architectural academics is a defensive strategy intended to draw attention away from the failure of Modernism in architecture.

  • Planning Landscape: Dimensions, Elements,

    Birkhauser Planning Landscape: Dimensions, Elements,

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisWhen developing a design concept in a realizable plan, landscape architects oscillate between two different levels of criteria: the tangible design task in context with the planning typology of the park, playground, outdoor swimming pool, or sports facilities, and the individual elements such as steps, ramps, pathways, fenced-in enclosures, outdoor furniture, and so on. Planning Landscape is a well-conceived tool for the planner, which focuses on the two main aspects of “elements” and “typologies”. The planner can flexibly shift between these two according to the specific criterion. The publication presents all information relevant to the planning in a detailed, clear, and cohesive manner. These two main chapters are flanked by an introductory chapter explaining the basics and determining factors of designing in open spaces at the front of the book, andan appendix at the end of the book where general dimensions and units, directives and norms are all clearly compiled.

  • Masterpieces of Fantasy Art

Taschen GmbH Masterpieces of Fantasy Art

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisFantasy art, that colorful blend of myth, muscle and sexy maidens, took off in 1923 with the launch of Weird Tales magazine, was reinvigorated in the 1960s with The Lord of the Rings, Conan the Barbarian paperbacks with Frank Frazetta covers, and the late ’60s emergence of fantasy psychedelia. It went big in the ’70s with the role-playing game Dungeons & Dragons, the brilliant French magazine Métal Hurlant, and the first Star Wars film. The number of active artists peaked in that decade, but a new generation of fans discovered the genre through fantasy trading card games in the ’90s, leading to a massive interest in the art form today. Frank Frazetta’s oil paintings—when they infrequently come to market—have sold for more than $ 5 million in recent years. Fans line up at Comic-Cons to meet Boris Vallejo, Rodney Matthews, Greg Hildebrandt, Michael Whelan, and Philippe Druillet, and memorialize dead icons HR Giger, Jeffrey Catherine Jones, and Frazetta. Imagine how eagerly they’ll welcome TASCHEN’s History of Fantasy Art, including all the artists listed above and more. This monster-sized tome features original paintings, contextualized by preparatory sketches, sculptures, calendars, magazines, and paperback books for an immersive dive into this dynamic, fanciful genre. Insightful bios go beyond Wikipedia to give a more accurate and eye-opening look into the life of each artist. Complete with tipped-in chapter openers, this collection will reign as the most exquisite and informative guide to this popular subject for years to come.Trade Review“A book at least as epic as its subject.” * La Liberté *“Fantasy Art is America’s least understood fine-art form.” * artnet.com *“Calling this ‘a book’ is an absurd understatement. This is an overwhelmingly lavish and gorgeous tome, a giant of a volume, a beautifully presented canonical codex of imaginative realist art.” * mutualart.com *“It was likely the first art you really enjoyed, discovered on a comic book, paperback, or record cover. You could almost feel the blood vessels expanding in your brain... absorbing the rich colors, the alien landscape, the idealized human figures.” * Dian Hanson *
