Aarhus University Press Transit Art, Mobility and Migration in the Age of
Book SynopsisIn todays globalised society, people are travelling more than ever. But they do so for different reasons, to different extents, and not least on radically different terms. Many go on holiday close to home or far away, commute regularly to and from work, and frequently visit family and friends in other countries. At the same time, migration is on the rise, and in recent years Europe has also experienced the arrival of the largest number of refugees in the history of the continent. Through contemporary art projects, Transit: Art, Mobility and Migration in the Age of Globalisation looks at the many different kinds of travellers whose paths cross daily in public transit zones. Who are they? Why are they travelling? Under what conditions do they travel? And what is their relationship to each other and to transit zones as sites of social and political negotiation? The research-based exhibition project Transit on which the publication is based, included art projects at stations and on the E line with an international exhibition at the museum, also includes an extensive educational activities, a website and collaboration with the Danish newspaper Information that includes debates and a publication. As a key element of the Transit project, furthermore KØS has in collaboration with Aalborg University Press published the research-based publication Transit: Art, Mobility and Migration in the Age of Globalisation. The publication includes a foreword by director of KØS Museum of Art in Public Spaces Ulrikke Neergaard and a research article based on the exhibition by postdoc and project curator Sabine Dahl Nielsen. The publication also includes an article based on mobilities theory by professor in sociology at Drexel University Mimi Sheller as well as an article based on migration politics written by architect Lorenzo Pezzani and filmmaker Charles Heller, both co-founders of Forensic Oceanography that is part of the collective research network Forensic Architecture, based at Goldsmiths, University of London. The artists Madame Nielsen og Pejk Malinovski each contributes with texts connected to their projects specifically produced to Transit. The publication also presents all of Transits art projects, debate events and educational activities and is richly illustrated with photographs from the exhibition at KØS Museum of Art in Public Spaces as well as documentation of the creation of projects in urban space and the participation and response of the public. Transit: Art, Mobility and Migration in the Age of Globalisation is aimed at art and cultural workers, for activists within the field of migration policy as well as for students, teachers and researchers in eg. art history, sociology, cultural geography and culture, curation, mobility and migration theory. The Transit research project and exhibition has only been made possible thanks to the generous support of Nordea-fonden. Transit is based on postdoc research project funded by the New Carlsberg Foundation. For more information on Transit visit the website www.itransit.dk

Aarhus University Press Circle of Form: Form and Contrast in Architecture
Book SynopsisCircle of Form offers an informative guide to the complex discipline of mastering form, contrast and composition in Architecture. The starting point for this book is our ability to see and think what is similar and what is different. Things can be more or less diverse, but oppositions, contrasts are a particular way to convey the difference. On reflection, opposites are one of the most used methods to quickly and immediately breakdown complex compositions into simple, well-defined but connected pieces. Artists have used this knowledge for centuries because simplicity supports a clear artistic language and oppositions emphasise expression and interaction, whether it is literature, music, painting, sculpture, product design or as in this book: Architecture. The Circle of Form continues this tradition, but with a systematic and modern perspective. The theoretical approach of this book continues the authors previous research into art theories, perception, cognitive theories and neuroscience related to visual experiences.

Aarhus University Press Designerly Loops
Book SynopsisEssential thinking and doing for design students. How do you do design for the first time? Design was originally taught as an apprenticeship, because there is no one solution for, how to approach a design challenge. It is situated. It depends on the expertise of those tackling it. It depends on their circumstances and loads of other factors. DESIGNERLY LOOPS is an apprenticeship notebook with roadmaps, worksheets, short explainer videos and reflections: The roadmaps will guide you in your design journey. It is kind of a map for navigating an unknown territory for the first time. We tried to lay this out to support you in moving forward; The worksheets will suggest relevant actions and support you in more doing; The short explainer videos will answer most of your practical and theoretical questions and also show concrete examples of different tools and techniques typically used in the design process. These videos are only produced in Danish (as a start); The reflections will help you reflect, to become reflective in your practice and move up the ladder of expertise. It will help you to do and think in a focused and reflective manner. The content in the book stands on the shoulders of design thinking and designerly research, as well as our own research on how to build a design expertise. We have written it because we found that there is missing a book that teaches design students to move forward, not only in their project, but in their enhancement of their skills within design.

Aarhus University Press The Gesamtkunstwerk in Design and Architecture:
Book SynopsisThe history of modern design and architecture has seen many attempts to embrace and merge different art forms, and to bring art into the framing of everyday life and the organisation of modern society, in a process understood as total design or total architecture. These attempts were historically based on the romanticist idea of merging all art forms into a uniting and transgressing work of art, mostly associated with – but certainly not limited to – Richard Wagner’s theoretical writings and musical dramas. This utopian dream of the Gesamtkunstwerk, or Total Work of Art, was intended both to bring unity to the people and to bring art into the everyday life of their homes, as well as into factories, cities and even modern media. As a result, the experiments ranged from music, poetry and drama to architecture, design, visual communication and city-planning. These ideas of merging art forms into more immersive and transgressive installations or design interventions to change everyday life are widespread today, but their complex and often problematic roots are mostly ignored. Design and architecture have delivered some of the broadest and most influential experiments with the Gesamtkunstwerk, from garden cities for workers and corporate identity design to the German AEG corporation.
