  • The Structural Basis of Architecture

Taylor & Francis Ltd The Structural Basis of Architecture

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisThis is a book that shows how to see structures as being integral to architecture. It engages a subject that is both about understanding the mechanical aspects of structure as well as being able to relate this to the space, form, and conceptual design ideas that are inherent to the art of building.Analyzing the structural principles behind many of the best-known works of architecture from past and present alike, this book places the subject within a contemporary context. The subject matter is approached in a qualitative and discursive manner, illustrated by many photographs and structural behavior diagrams. Accessible mathematical equations and worked-out examples are also included so as to deepen a fundamental understanding of the topic. This new, color editionâs format has been thoroughly revised and its content updated and expanded throughout. It is perfect as either an introductory structures course text or as a designerâs sourcebook for inspiration, for here two esTrade Review"The profession of the master-builders split into the independent disciplines of architecture and structural engineering in the 19th century. In order to pursue a holistic approach, architects need an understanding of the structural basis of architecture. For this purpose, there is no better reading imaginable than this book. This is not only true for students, but also for practitioners who want to understand how buildings function structurally. Moreover, I would recommend this book to engineers, who seek to understand the reasoning and motivation of architects in order to find structural solutions for their intentions." - Manfred Grohmann, Founder and principal of Bollinger+Grohmann Ingenieure; Professor for Structural Design, Faculty of Architecture, University of Kassel"The Structural Basis of Architecture, 3rd edition, is a comprehensive account of the many trickeries architects employ to defeat "nature". Since structure is our ultimate tool, the more extended our understanding of it the better chances to make a seamless transition of loads, either live or dead, into the ground." - Mauricio Pezo & Sofia von Ellrichshausen, founding partners of Pezo von Ellrichshausen"What a delightful book! The Structural Basis of Architecture has been widely recognized as a classic that exposes how structures make Architecture. In this revisited third edition, new contemporary case studies, colored illustrations and an original chapter on structural systems sharpen and further reinforce any reader’s learning experience. Every student in architecture should study this book." - Sigrid Adriaenssens, Associate Professor, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Princeton UniversityReview of the 2nd edition"The Structural Basis of Architecture uses a myriad of historical and contemporary case studies to provide a concise and thorough explanation of the relationship between engineering and architecture. This book is an indispensable source for anyone interested in the logic of structures and their role not just in supporting but in imagining architecture." - Mohsen Mostafavi, Dean, and Alexander and Victoria Wiley Professor of Design, Harvard University Graduate School of DesignTable of ContentsPreface 1. Amberley Publishing Birmingham in 50 Buildings

    3 in stock

Although Birmingham’s history goes back beyond the Middle Ages, there are only a few fragments of medieval Birmingham left, some of which have been moved from their original site as the city expanded. The city expanded rapidly in the industrial age and although Birmingham has many properties from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, it was radically transformed by the bombing raids of the Second World War and the subsequent rejuvenation by city planners. Some 1960s and 1970s buildings like the Rotunda have become icons of the city, but in recent years much of the mid-twentieth-century building, often in concrete brutalist style, has in turn been replaced by new structures like Beetham Tower and Birmingham Library. As England’s second city, Birmingham was a major centre of manufacture, and many of the buildings still stand today. It was also the home of a significant art and architecture movement, the Arts and Crafts movement, which has left its mark on the architectural legacy of Birmingham. Birmingham in 50 Buildings explores the history of this fascinating West Midlands metropolis through a selection of its most interesting buildings and structures, showing the changes that have taken place over the years. It uncovers the earliest churches and dwellings in the city, unique pieces of industrial architecture, the amazing heritage of Victorian religious and municipal structures, art deco cinemas, modernist high-rise blocks and iconic shopping centres. This book will appeal to all those who live in Birmingham or have an interest in the city.

Book SynopsisThe celebrated art nouveau architect Antoni Gaudí was a contradictory figure: a deeply religious, politically right-wing man who nevertheless created revolutionary, lyrical buildings. This book explores Gaudí’s life, work and influences, from Catalan nationalism to the Industrial Revolution. Michael Eaude expertly guides readers through Gaudí’s dozen great works, including the Sagrada Família, which attracts millions of tourists to Barcelona each year. Gaudí’s life is also chronicled, from his provincial upbringing in Reus to his time in Barcelona, where he became a dandy whose only attempt at marriage was rejected. He later suffered a nervous breakdown, became obsessively religious, and fused Gothic, Baroque, and Orientalist architecture into his unique style.

Book SynopsisA walk through the remnants of a social democratic America, and an argument about its future. In the 1960s, a novel ideology about cities, and what was best for them, emerged in New York. Pushing against the state planning of the time, it held that cities were at their best when they were driven from the bottom-up and when organic, unplanned processes were allowed to run their course, in a spontaneous ballet of the street. Cities were at their worst, however, when the state stepped in, demolishing lively old neighbourhoods and erecting giant, sterile, empty projects. This book uses the method of this ideology - walking - to test how true it actually is about the capital of the twentieth century, New York City, with a brief interlude in the capital, Washington DC. The projects that are walked in this book range from cultural complexes in Manhattan to New Deal-era public housing developments in Brooklyn, Harlem and Queens, from the social experiment of Roosevelt Island to Communist h

  • Through a Designer's Eye: A Focus on Interiors

Monacelli Press Through a Designer's Eye: A Focus on Interiors

Book SynopsisA sumptuous presentation of impeccably designed classic interiors by Matthew Patrick Smyth. Matthew Patrick Smyth is renowned for elegant, sophisticated rooms that combine sumptuous fabrics, well-selected antiques, and contemporary comfort. In Through a Designer's Eye, he reveals his design process, emphasizing his commitment to exploring the world, through travel and in the imagination of the theater, and to recording scenes and vignettes in photographs. Through a Designer's Eye presents Smyth's recent work ranging from a traditional Park Avenue apartment and an edgy Tribeca loft in Manhattan to waterfront houses in Florida, New England, and Long Island that demonstrate his skills in responding to context and eliciting preferences of clients to create a unique environment for each. Nowhere is this better seen than in his own house in Salisbury, Connecticut, an unexpected 1970s prefabricated deck house now elegantly appointed with an eclectic mix of furniture, objects, and works of art he and his partner have collected over many years. Smyth's engaging, first-person narrative references formative experiences with theater and photography and focuses on five elements of interior design - appreciating of artisanal and handcrafted elements, understanding of history and context, evaluating light and seasonal change, weaving furnishings and art into a coherent mise-en-scene, creating an inviting atmosphere - that contribute to successful spaces. Illustrating the text are lush photographs of completed rooms, interspersed with Smyth's own vignettes and details, which add a unique visual layer to the presentation.Trade Review“Matthew Smyth is an inspired designer whose vision brings imagination and practicality into balance.” - Gloria Vanderbilt "Matthew’s work is as varied as his clients’ tastes, but the one thing that remains consistent is his brilliance at delivering authentic beauty and true comfort no matter where his talent lands." - Wendy Goodman “...be transported into some beautiful homes and learn ideas for your own home or apartment.” - Anderson Cooper “[A] must-have for any private library.” - Elle Decor “. . . the one thing I’ve found is consistent in his work is the sense of comfort and ease that he integrates into everything he touches. In his new book . . . Smyth not only brings the reader into many of the homes he has decorated but also features his own photographs taken on trips all over the world (if he ever quits his day job, a career as a photographer lies in wait).” - The Cut “Through a Designer’s Eye has a first-person narrative engagingly written by Smyth, who uses the text to present his observations about the value of handcrafted artisanal objects as well as his love of history, drama and architecture. . . . The book’s greatest strengths, however, are how it helps us understand the way Smyth’s eye evolves as each interior comes together, and how it makes us see the connections between photography and design.” —1stdibs Introspective “[One of] the best new design books to buy this fall. . . . A book that takes readers from initial inspiration to design process to finished work, all - as the title suggests - through the discerning eye of a talented creative.” - House Beautiful “Features beloved design projects along with some of his favorite Instagram shots.” - Flower Magazine “In this new book, [Smyth’s] engaging, first-person narrative focuses on the five elements of interior design that contribute to successful spaces.” - Society Texas “Featuring tours of his projects, including his own country home, Smyth offers a fresh view on decorating in harmony.” - Atlanta Homes & Lifestyle “[One of] the IT books on interior design that deserve to be in your home. . . will help you think differently about design, and providing inspiration for your next design project.” - CovetED “It’s lovely.” —Portobello Design “A fresh perspective on the design monograph that’s part interior design career chronicle, featuring his sophisticated history-inflected rooms; part text book with informative design-directives; and part photographic essay featuring his spellbinding lens work. . . . Book SynopsisBadenoch and Strathspey is a land of many contrasts, and in modern times a land of many uses. Not always has it been the playground of winter sports enthusiasts and a mecca for tourists - for centuries the mountains which protected the province of Moray to the north and the Highland glens to the west were an obstacle to travel and a haven for cattle thieves and reivers. In this fascinating book, illustrated with over 100 period photographs, Bruce B. Bishop explores the changing face of the area over millennia, from the Ice Age, Pictish and Celtic times through the coming of Christianity, the Jacobite rebellions, the more leisured Victorian age, and the twentieth century. Being a rural part of the country, Lost Badenoch and Strathspey covers not only lost buildings - churches, castles and other structures in the main settlements of Badenoch and Strathspey, Aberlour, Tomintoul, Grantown-on-Spey, Aviemore, Kingussie, Newtonmore and Dallwhinnie - but also lost ways of life and industry, from droving and fishing to milling, transportation.

Book SynopsisSkateboarding is both a sport and a way of life. Creative, physical, graphic, urban and controversial, it is full of contradictions a billion-dollar global industry which still retains its vibrant, counter-cultural heart. Skateboarding and the City presents the only complete history of the sport, exploring the story of skate culture from the surf-beaches of 60s California to the latest developments in street-skating today. Written by a life-long skater who also happens to be an architectural historian, and packed through with full-colour images of skaters, boards, moves, graphics, and film-stills this passionate, readable and rigorously-researched book explores the history of skateboarding and reveals a vivid understanding of how skateboarders, through their actions, experience the city and its architecture in a unique way.Trade ReviewThe book is superbly researched, colorfully and beautifully illustrated, and thoroughly analyzes the topic. It has the physical appearance of an elegant coffee-table book combined with outstanding scholarship, effectively employing theory and empirical data, particularly the oral and written testimony of participants. * CHOICE *There's absolutely no way I can do the work justice here – the book is incredibly thought-provoking, especially from the perspective of actually being a skateboarder. • Aeropolis – Queering Air in Toxicpolluted Worlds

Columbia Books on Architecture and the City Aeropolis – Queering Air in Toxicpolluted Worlds

Book SynopsisHow do we get to know air? Aeropolis: Queering Air in Toxicpolluted Worlds offers a speculative and interdisciplinary framework to reorient common understandings of air and air pollution as matter “out there.” Aeropolis contests regimes of managing air which ultimately operate toward upholding dominant modes of world-making that are dependent on forms of exclusion and inequity. Instead, Aeropolis proposes that air is thought of as a city, to center its social, cultural, political, ecological entanglements. Drawing upon feminist technoscience and queer ecological frameworks, Aeropolis moves away from solutions toward a methodology of “designing-thinking-making” that redirects and connects our understandings of air—as designers, as citizens—with ongoing struggles for just futures. Moving through a series of design interventions, histories of air, and theoretical coordinates, Aeropolis thinks with air across its many forms—through smog and dust, bodies and breath, pollen and weeds, and from urban design to geopolitics, polluted environments to open data, parks to aerial infrastructures. It insists that we acknowledge the diversity of air and its relation to humans, non-humans, and environments, both physically and affectively. That we become sensible to air by following its unruliness—by living, breathing, seeing, holding, touching, queering airs. With contributions from María Puig de la Bellacasa and Timothy K. Choy.Trade ReviewThe airs of Aeropolis are full of political agonism and liberatory potential, and this book serves as a guide to navigating the world of the potently-affective and semi-visible. -- Jaffer Kolb * BOMB Magazine *

Princeton University Press Landscape as Urbanism

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisTrade Review"Shortlisted for the 2017 Urban Design Book Award, Urban Design Group""Before our cities were grids of asphalt, brick, and steel, they were islands, wetlands, and deserts. For centuries, urbanism relied on the engineer to reconstruct the natural environment around the built environment. But in our era of populist environmentalism, urbanism looks more than ever to the landscape architect. This book reflects on the transformation in which the landscape architect, by adapting human infrastructure to nature, is really the ultimate urbanist." * Metropolis *"In Landscape as Urbanism, one of the field's pioneers presents a powerful case for rethinking the city through landscape. Generously illustrated, [the book] examines works from around the world by designers ranging from Ludwig Hilberseimer, Andrea Branzi, and Frank Lloyd Wright to James Corner, Adriaan Geuze, and Michael Van Valkenburgh." * ArcSpace *"Rich in bold ideas."---Jared Green, The Dirt"For decades, New Urbanism was the only acceptable form of urban planning in the United States. In the past 15 years, however, several challengers have appeared on the scene, none bolder than the landscape urbanism movement. Spearheaded by Charles Waldheim, who chaired the Department of Landscape Architecture at Harvard's Graduate School of Design (GSD) from 2009 to 2015, the movement and its protagonists argue that landscape, more than buildings, has fundamentally changed the way cities urbanize in the 21st century. Waldheim's new book, Landscape as Urbanism . . . reflects on the origins of landscape urbanism and theorizes about its continued cultural relevance."---Samuel Medina, Metropolis"Talking about landscape urbanism is more like telling a story than theorizing a practice, and Waldheim tells this story well, with an authority arising from his key role in developing landscape urbanism. . . . As a history teacher faced with endless questions from students who love the idea of it but can't really work out what it is, I am grateful to Waldheim for his new book: Now I can give some readings that have some clarity, accompanied by great writing."---Julian Raxworthy, Landscape Architecture Magazine"Charles Waldheim, Irving professor of landscape architecture, advances a theoretical underpinning for breaching the barriers that have separated urbanism and landscape; the aim is a more coherent view of what cities can be." * Harvard Magazine *"[A] thorough and highly researched book."---David Sisam, Canadian Architect"A timely and fascinating book."---National Urban Design Awards 2017"Suffice to say, as one of the leading voices and purveyors of landscape urbanism, there is no better guide to the subject than Charles Waldheim. As such, Landscape as Urbanism: A General Theory stands in a league of its own, not only as a summary of Waldheim's work on the subject to-date, but also as a convincing and powerful argument for the relevance of landscape as a lens through which the contemporary city must be engaged."---Erick Villagomez, Spacing

  • The Secret Lives Of Buildings: From The Parthenon

Granta Books The Secret Lives Of Buildings: From The Parthenon

    3 in stock

Book SynopsisThe plans are drawn up, a site is chosen, foundations are dug: a building comes into being with the expectation that it will stay put and stay for ever. But a building is a capricious thing: it is inhabited and changed, and its existence is a tale of constant and curious transformation. In this radical reimagining of architectural history, Edward Hollis tells the stories of thirteen buildings, beginning with the 'once upon a time' when they first appeared, through the years of appropriation, ruin and renovation, and ending with a temporary 'ever after'. In spell-binding prose, Hollis follows his buildings through time and space to reveal the hidden histories of the Parthenon and the Alhambra, Gloucester Cathedral and Haghia Sofia, Sans Souci and Notre Dame de Paris, Malatesta's Tempio and Loreto, and explores landmarks of our own time, from Hulme's legendary crescents to the Berlin Wall and the fibre-glass theme parks of Las Vegas.Trade ReviewHollis is magical on the layers of myth and history in the classical world - this is an engaging, erudite and readable book -- Edwin Heathcote * Financial Times *[A] tremendous book ... Hollis recounts the stories of 13 structures with passion and panache ... His book [is] a rare thing: non-fiction you can reread * Scotland on Sunday *Accessible and ambitious ... Hollis has the gift of making these buildings seem real and alive * The Times *Hollis brings together an iconoclastic attitude and a lively writing style to create a kind of counter-history of architecture, one that starts where the original designers left off and narrates the subsequent biography of the wonderful and chimeric monsters that buildings are -- Kirk Savage * Washington Post *Scintillating ... Every so often, works on the building art capture the public imagination. Now Tracy Kidder and Witold Rybczynski are joined by Edward Hollis, whose new book ... [is] worthy of wide consideration -- Martin Fuller * New York Review of Books *An accessible and ambitious exploration of the nature and meanings of architecture ... Hollis has the gift of making these buildings seem real and alive without recourse to illustrations, but his aim lies beyond the physical fabric, in the contested values that architecture can embody. Moral preoccupations are never far away -- Simon Bradley * Sunday Times *A fantasia from the real and the imagined... An unusual sort of speculative history, almost a work of experimental fiction. The buildings, which are its nominal subjects, are only MacGuffins on which Hollis hangs a series of short stories on the themes of love, loss, and time. -- Ian Volner * Time Out New York *What a happy tingle of discovery to come across a book that differs sharply from all the others in its field ... Hollis thinks with such originality and writes with such flair that he is a pleasure to read -- Stanley Abercrombie * The American Scholar *A beautifully wrought book: a kind of illuminated manuscript with words taking the place of pictures ... Here are wondrous stories writ in stone, and Edward Hollis has written about them very well indeed. * Guardian *A new and entertaining view of the context in which historic structures have existed ... Recommended to readers interested in architecture, the ideas of space and place, and intellectually stimulating historical tales -- Valerie Nye * Library Journal *Hollis moves gracefully through both buildings and historical periods with an impressive command of detail and a sensitivity to the people involved ... A strong, satisfying exploration of the history, beauty, and wonder of Western architecture * Kirbus Reviews *Not confined to world-famous monuments, Hollis's attractive approach attends to vernacular structures as well ... He writes history electrically, informatively, and entertainingly * Booklist *Any architecture or history buff would be pleased to find The Secret Lives of Buildings under the tree ... Through the eyes of first-time author Edward Hollis, an architect who specializes in restoring historic buildings, readers will discover that iconic structures like the Parthenon, the Berlin Wall, and even the Vegas Strip have led more storied lives than we realize. Hollis shares them with a fairy-tale charm ... We at BookPage enjoyed this book so much that it made it onto our list of 2009's Top 10 Non-fiction Books * BookPage *An intriguing collection of essays ... Hollis takes his material seriously, and his bibliography and footnotes reflect his thorough research. His informal tone makes his essays more approachable for the novice ... This volume is ideal for general readers ... Recommended -- Laurel Bliss * Choice: Current Reviews for Academic Libraries *There is something Sebaldian about The Secret Lives of Buildings: a digressive pleasure in the sheer strangeness of architecture and the mortal intrigues by which it was wrought ... Hollis is particularly good on the history of architectural reconstruction -- Brian Dillon * Independent *An impressive debut ... Beautifully written and produced -- Alice Wyllie * Scotsman *Tremendous ... It's unusual for a nonfiction book to match a neat conceit with elegant execution, but Hollis has achieved it. The stories are actually stories, not mere scrolls of fact. It helps that he has a beautifully wry tone ... Hollis experiments with structure, chronology, leitmotifs, and repetitions, and makes his book a rare thing: nonfiction you can reread -- Stuart Kelly * Scotland on Sunday *A fascinating tale, a fairy-tale journey that shifts seamlessly between edification and revelation ... Quite unlike any other recent book on architecture, and a worthy nominee for the Guardian's First Book Award -- Mark Cousins * Building Design *Edward Hollis rewrites architectural history in this beautiful and unsettling study of how the masterpieces of Western architecture have changed over time. Temples become mosques; monuments become ruins; deserts become cities, and deserts again. After reading this book, no building will seem quite the same -- Christopher Woodward, author of IN RUINS: A JOURNEY THROUGH HISTORY, ART, AND LITERATURE
