Birkhauser The Drama of Space: Spatial Sequences and
Book SynopsisThe experience of architectural spaces is formed by the way they are staged. The Drama of Space examines the composition and articulation of architectural spaces in terms of spatial dramaturgy, as a repertoire of means and strategies for shaping spatial experience. This fundamental approach to architectural design is presented in four parts: Archetypal principles of spatial composition are traced from the study of three assembly buildings of the early modern period in Venice. Theatre, film, music, and theory provide background knowledge on dramaturgy. Detailed analyses of 18 international case studies offer new perspectives on contemporary architecture. The book ends with a systematic presentation of the dramaturgy of space, its parameters and tools, in architectural design.

Birkhauser Encounters and Positions: Architecture in Japan
Book SynopsisNow as before, Japanese architecture is very popular in Europe and the western world. This publication provides an overview of its many design concepts and cross-references. Using design examples and interviews, the book presents thirteen current positions. The publication focuses on young architects who take up extremely independent positions within Japanese architecture, as well as on Pritzker Prize winners Toyo Ito and Fumihiko Maki. Six essays by European specialists on Japan provide supplementary insights into the aesthetics and space concepts of Japanese architecture, making cross-references to Japan’s architectural history, and explaining current lines of development. The book thus combines a self-reflective approach with an outsider’s analytical view.

Birkhauser Architecture Design Data: Practice Competency
Book SynopsisA systemic transformation is underway in architectural design, engineering and construction. The discipline and profession of architecture is being reshaped in a moment where information, insight and predictions generated during the design process move into construction no longer essentially via drawings. Other, more profound digital techniques yield fundamentally different workflows, responsibilities and business models for architects. This book offers a comprehensive framework, detailed analysis and critical assessment of the challenges and opportunities inherent in those changes. The author sets out to provide direction for a new era in architectural creation that can be understood and managed by a profession which must become better equipped to direct its future.

Birkhauser Inhabited Machines: Genealogy of an Architectural
Book SynopsisAround 1800, one of the most influential architectural concepts of the last 250 years emerged—that of built spaces as technical devices. Climate, morality, and comfort are the three main themes of this study, and each is vividly examined in separate chapters through synchronous comparison and with the help of examples. The emergence of corresponding metaphors, knowledge, and construction forms is traced over a period of about 70 years. The author focuses particularly on the operative dimension of architecture. Thus, the book provides a historical perspective on a key topic for the future of architecture. The book is aimed at readers interested in architecture, technology or the cultural history of building and living. The Exploring Architecture series makes architectural scholarship accessible, introduces the latest research methods, and covers a wide range of periods, regions, and topics.

Birkhauser The Painter Le Corbusier: Eileen Gray's Villa E
Book SynopsisIn 1929, Eileen Gray designed Villa E 1027 for herself and her youthful partner Jean Badovici, but only lived there for three years. Today, the elegant house in Roquebrune-Cap-Mar- tin in southern France is an icon of modernism. In 1937, Le Corbusier discovered the place and the “Maison en Bord de Mer”. Inspired by the genius of the place and the light on the Côte d'Azur, he created a total of eight large-format wall paintings there in 1938 and 1939 onwards, some of which complement the building congenially, while others set counterpoints. In 1952, he built his Cabanon nearby and decorated it with murals as well. The book by the well-known architectural historian Tim Benton documents Le Corbusier's artwork at this special place, explores its controversies, and places it in his overall oeuvre. The fascinating photographs by Manuel Bougot capture the special atmosphere of the villa Le Corbusier's painting is lesser known but was formative for his lifelong preoccupation with polychromy After extensive renovation work until 2021, E 1027, as well as the Cabanon, is open to the public again

Edition Axel Menges Hozon: Architectual and Urban Conservation in
Book SynopsisText in English, German and Japanese. The architecture of Japan, both historic and contemporary, has attracted architects from all over the world since the early 60s. In search of the 'Japaneseness' of place (ma), space and architecture several dissertations have been written, especially about the Japanese house and rituals, Conservation, however, was largely neglected. Only recently, with the listing of Japanese sites as Unesco World Heritage in 1994 and the Nara conference on authenticity in 1995, has the Japanese approach to conservation emerged as an intriguing issue. The practice of dismantling and reconstructing complex timber structures represents an essentially Japanese approach. Moreover, the refined documentation and structural research prior to any intervention are much admired by the international conservation community. The articles for this publication were prepared in the context of a Japanese-German co-operative programme in architectural and urban conservation in 1996-98. For the first time ever a Western publication attempts to portray the Japanese practice of repair -- hozon -- of historic structures. Detailed photographic documentations demonstrate the beauty of timber structures that are otherwise concealed by roofs and walls. It also becomes evident that an architectural object is not an entity that is defined once and for all, but an object that allows for change. Documentations of ongoing projects, with emphasis on the Fudo-do on the sacred mountain of Koyasan, explain and justify various kinds of interventions that are aimed at structural reinforcement and disaster prevention.

Forma Edizioni Paris On the Road Architecture Guides
Book SynopsisThe Paris guide is focused on describing the complexity of this European metropolis through its 20th and 21st century architecture.Following Haussmann's transformations, Paris, the most densely constructed city in Europe, expanded thanks to a flexibility based on a matrix able to absorb and integrate the directional courses of the architecture of the period. However, the complexity of the urban transformations and the changes in the Parisian architectural panorama did not erase the solid identity of the city's urban image. This book guides the reader through decades of Parisian architectural history beginning with the great names of the Modernist movement, Loos, Le Corbusier and Oscar Niemeyer. The second half of the 20th century is famous for the cultural vitality of the city reflected in the innovative architecture of the Centre George Pompidou designed by Piano and Rogers. The Pompidou Centre is both the symbol and result of the 1968 student revolution. The 1980s and 90s were

Nieves Ordnung und Reinlichkeit
Book SynopsisPeter Fischli (1952) and David Weiss (19462012) began their 33-year collaboration in 1979. Resisting any specific style, medium, or material, their work explores the poetics of banality the sublimity of the objects and events constituting everyday life. Indebted to Dada, Surrealism, Pop Art, and Conceptual Art, their photographs, videos, slide projections, films, books, sculptures, and multimedia installations rely on keen observation and uncanny wit. Throughout the course of their partnership, Fischli and Weiss probed the idea of dualistic thinking. Perhaps because they were a team of two involved in constant dialogue and debate, they consistently interrogated Western culture's reliance on contraries. The artists embodied this approach in their alter egos, Rat and Bear, who, for all their differences (rats being ugly and ubiquitous while pandas are lovable and endangered), appear as equal partners in their various misadventures. The booklet Ordnungund Reinlichkeit (Order and Cleanliness, 1981)accompanied the Rat and Bear films and is crammed with charts and diagrams, each attempting to impose a crazed order on the world. The original booklet was a self produced booklet, comprising a set of 15 photocopies on sale following the first showing of The Least Resistance at a late-night screening in Zurich.

MIT Press Ltd EventCities 5
Book SynopsisAn essential resource on the work of Bernard Tschumi Architects, with a focus on how concept, context, and program intersect with intuition in singular and unexpected ways. Event-Cities 5 is the fifth and final volume in the MIT Press series documenting recent built and unbuilt projects by renowned architect Bernard Tschumi. This volume expands on the theoretical preoccupations that have shaped Tschumi's work in practice and pedagogy. In this volume, Tschumi embarks on what he calls a poetics that addresses both the rational elaboration of work and the irrational eruption of inexplicable elements in architectural projects. How do chance, intuition, and analogy, among other elements, intersect with the logical play of concept, context, and program to generate innovative and informed design?Highlights of this volume include circular building projects, works with suspended gardens and floating rectangular masses, superposed structures created via surrealist tactics, an immense educational research complex in France that hovers between building and urban design, a museum in China made from intersecting conic shapes, and a project for a cultural center in Italy that is structured as an investigation into courtyards and facades. The book features nearly 30 projects developed over the last fifteen years and highlights Tschumi's longstanding interest not only in producing conceptual clarity, but in questioning architecture itself.

Monacelli Press Material Transfers: Metaphor, Craft, and Place in
Book SynopsisA provocative examination of the connections between contemporary expression in architecture and traditional materials and forms. Architect, architectural historian, and preservationist Françoise Bollack presents eighteen projects that use traditional materials to build contemporary forms or use modern materials to build traditional forms, blurring the boundary between tradition and modernity in architecture. Bollack rejects the modernist taboo against imitation and precedent, tracing the history of adaptive and imitative design from the Renaissance to the Greek and Gothic revivals and to the nineteenth-century modular cast-iron facades that Philip Johnson considered "the basis for modern design." The book examines projects in the US, Europe, and Japan, encompassing a broad range of building types: residential, hospitality, commercial and retail, and cultural spaces. All share an intriguing, even radical, approach to reinterpreting traditional forms and materials. Humble thatch moves beyond the farmhouse roof to clad the walls of a Danish environmental center; a photographic image of a Parisian façade becomes a scrim on the façade of a new building; the ghost of an ancient Italian basilica is outlined in wire mesh. Among the featured architects are Kengo Kuma, architect of the Tokyo 2021 Olympic stadium; MVRDV, a highly regarded Dutch firm; Lacaton & Vassal and Chartier/Corbasson in France; Skene Catling de la Peña in the UK; Morris Adjmi in the USA; Max Dudler in Germany; Dortre Mandrup in Denmark; and Herzog & de Meuron in Switzerland.Trade Review“It’s a stunner that makes the case for reworking old forms in the modern vernacular. . . . Their buildings are beautiful – and they illustrate her thinking lucidly.” - Architects + Artisans “The French-trained Bollack has done considerable restoration work, but Material Transfers: Metaphor, Craft, and Place in Contemporary is an attempt to redefine the meaning of contextual design. Rather than engaging in a century-old battle between modern and traditional – the angst of replica versus invention, Bollack suggests we discard an ‘outdated moral opprobrium.’” - New England Diary
